Mrs. Athlyne Woodard West (wife of Hugh West) age 96 gave me the above names. E.B
and Virgil Woodard were her brothers. She said her sister Kate Kemp would have
been in the picture but she had to stay home that day to help their mother wash.

Billy Joe Powell was told that it was called Vanderbilt School. After a bit more research this
is probably Hoggtown School. Picture taken somewhere around 1912-16. Hoggtown School was also
called "The School on the Bluff" by many in the community.

Today we would say it was located between the Defeated Creek Park entrance and Cornwell's Chapel
Church.Mrs. Mary Petty Massey, former Defeated School teacher, and daughter of Floyd Petty said
that Vanderbilt School was in the West Point community. She also said that Mr. Tom Stanford was
a highly sought after teacher in his day and was considered a professor. Some students after
finishing the 8th grade were able to take a test in Murfreesboro to get their teaching
certificate. You could also get two years of high school at the Hoggtown School.

Students who wanted to get their high school diploma boarded with families in Carthage.
