William Carter Jr.
William
Carter Jr. was born July 9, 1760 in Halifax County, North Carolina. He was the first of eight children in the
family of William and Deanitia Carter Sr.
He married Martha A. _____ on January 11, 1787. Martha Carter was born January 6, 1764. Some say she was also a Carter, and cousin
of William Jr.
William Carter Jr. served in the Revolutionary War as a private soldier in the Halifax County militia. At age forty-two, he moved to adjacent Warren County, North Carolina. Two years later, in 1804, William and his family migrated to Smith County, Tennessee.

William
Carter’s residence (probably near Red Boiling Springs) was in the area annexed
to Macon County, Tennessee in 1842. He
died there on February 21, 1847. His
wife, Martha, preceded him in death on May 22, 1845. Both are buried in the Carter Cemetery in Macon County.

Carter Jr. and his wife were parents of seven children, as follows:

George M. Carter, b.
October 22, 1787, and d. November 16, 1860.
Buried in the Carter Cemetery in Macon County. He married Nancy Carter (a cousin) ca. 1797.

Beverly B. Carter, b.
June 1789. He married Mary Black.
3.
William S. Carter, b.
November 22, 1791 and died ca. 1860. He
married Nancy Rickman, daughter of Marcus and Mary Harper Rickman of Sumner
County, Tennessee, on July 22, 1822.
Nancy Rickman was b. May 2, 1797 and d. March 2, 1898.
4.
Prior S. Carter, b.
September 1793.
5.
Midda F. Carter, b.
September 1796.
6.
Martha Carter, b.
January 29, 1798.
7.
Joseph L. Carter, b.
April 28, 1805, and d. March 23, 1870.
Buried in the Carter Cemetery in Macon County.
