down by his son James. He built his home in it's place. It's the roof and chimney to the left. The house
is still standing. This is James Shoulders in 1943 salting his sheep as he did every Sunday morning.
Peter Shoulders was born in Smith Co. in 1857. He was one of the children of Lincoln and Mary 'Polly'
Gregory Shoulders. Mary 'Polly' was the daughter of Thomas 'Big Tom' and Betty Gregory. Lincoln was
the son of Malachi and Christine Austin Shoulders. Peter married Mary Jane 'Susie' Moss daughter of
Lee and Elizabeth Adcock Moss.
They had 4 Sons and 2 Daughters. The Following links will take you to the Families of each son,
at this time I have no pictures of Ollie Shoulders who married Lum West they had one son Kirk
West and Ellen Shoulders who married Willie Coons.
Peter and Polly Shoulders spent much of their life in the Hackett Hollow. Here this poor hard
working family of ten raised tobacco, corn, sheep and cattle. The old Shoulders home place sets
empty now. Descendants of this family are scattered up and down the Hollow. James and Altie are
buried across the road in the Shoulders family cemetery.
