William Layton Kemp, JR.
William Layton Kemp Jr. the son of Asa and Mary Ann Williams Kemp, b. June 02, 1842.
Named in honor of his father's brother William Layton Kemp Sr. In those days it was
common place for fathers to name their sons after their brothers
Jr. and Sr. only noted which was the younger and the older.

He married the mother of all his children, in 1871, Mary Ann Hackett.
They had 13 children: Claude, Maude, Asa & Eddie (twins), Eva,
Bee Bee, Otis, Hettie, Sallie, Kate, Pearl, Ollie and Willie.

Maude L. Kemp married Dock C. Russell, who died in 1928 then to Thomas S. Joines

William Layton Kemp Jr. served as Sergeant and then a Captain in the CSA.

He died at his home in Kempville to which he gave his name, on July 18, 1914 and was buried
with Masonic Rites in the Kemp family cemetery behind his brother's home, John Morgan
Kemp, on Salt Lick Road in Kempville. Mary Ann, his second wife is buried beside him.

Mary Ann Hackett Kemp
Mary Ann Hackett Kemp, wife of William Layton Kemp Jr.., daughter of William "Buck" Temple
Hackett and Mahala Jane Vance and loving mother to thirteen children. Molly was born March 07,
1857 and died September 15, 1908 at her home in Kempville, Tennessee, named for her husband.
Her father was born January 25, 1820 in Buckingham County, Virginia, and died July 09, 1889
in Defeated Creek community, Smith Co., Tn.. He married Mahala Jane Vance January 04, 1844
in Smith County, daughter of John Vance and unknown. She was born January 09, 1826 and died
Dec. 18, 1907 in Smith County, Tennessee.

Claude Ezra and Daisy Belle Gaines Kemp
Claude Ezra Kemp, the son of William Layton and Mary Ann Hackett Kemp Jr., was born 6-22-1872 and
died 2-08-1923. His wife was Daisy Belle Gaines, daughter of Edward C. Gaines of Gainesboro, Tenn.,
and [Millie] Nancy Condra. Daisy Belle Gaines Kemp was born 6-27-1878 and died 9-26-1908. Their
children were: Vera Estelle Kemp who married Charlie Ferrell and Mary Belle Kemp who married James
Arthur Nesbitt and two children that died as infants. After Daisy's death he married Cora Sullivan
Johnson 1-29-1909, they divorced, no issue; he married 3rd. Ann Ladd 7-27-1911, they divorced,
no issue; his fourth wife was Minnie Hargis Jenkins. They had three children:
Mollie Gray Lucille Kemp, Ollie Mai Jewel Kemp and William Logan Kemp.

Daisy Belle Gaines Kemp was the sister of Callie Gaines McCall. William Grant and Callie Gaines
McCall's family picture can be seen on this site.

Mary Belle Kemp and James Arthur Nesbitt
Mary Belle Kemp was the daughter of Claude Ezra Kemp and Daisy Belle Gaines. She was
born 9-13-1902 and died 4-21-1995. She married James Arthur [Shorty] Nesbitt. He was
born 3-17-1899 and died 11-22-1991. Parents of Robbie Nesbitt Frye and Mabel Nesbitt
Morris. They rest together in the Crestview Memorial Gardens in Gallatin, Tennessee.

William Kemp's second wife, Mary Ann Hackett, died September 15, 1908. He married
Annie Mae Russell July 15, 1909. They remained married until his death in 1914.
