SAMPSON DIXON KEMP'S GRAVE
Sampson was the son of Jinks & Lucretia Hickerson Kemp, & grandson of Murphy Kemp
(b. March 21, 1770 in N.C.), He was born August 25, 1837 and died on the breast works at
the Battle of Franklin November 30, 1864. He was a first sergeant. He enlisted in Missouri
where his brother Ellis B. Kemp had removed to from Smith County. Ellis B. Kemp was
shot & killed by a bushwhacker during the Civil War in Saco, Madison Co. Mo.. Sampson's
niece Ollie Lee Kemp Russell (Mrs. Jefferson L. Russell) claimed him as her Confederate
ancestor when she joined the Capt. Henry W. Hart Chapter of the UDC in Smith County,
December 01, 1927.Sampson was not married.
Pictured is his grave no. 29, section 8 Missouri, located at the McGavock Confederate
Cemetery on the Carnton Plantation grounds in Franklin, Tennessee. The Carnton Mansion
is pictured in the background. June 01, 1997 ceremonies were held to honor these fallen
soldiers and my family placed a wreath and Smith Co. soil on his grave.
His stone is marked with the number 29 and initials SDK.
