William H. Hale and Martha Ann E. Clark
The above picture is that of William H. Hale and his first wife, Martha Ann E. Clark Hale. Martha was
the daughter of Thomas Anderson Clark and Eliza Ann Scurlock Clark, and sister to Jonathan Bell Clark.
Martha was born abt. 1839 in the Bluff Creek community and was raised on Dyers Branch. She married
Bill Hale, December 15, 1867 and they made their home on Dyers's Branch living on or near her father's
farm. This couple had no children. Martha passed away sometime after 1880 and is buried in the Clark
Cemetery on Dyer's Branch Road.

William H. Hale, born January 15, 1838, was the child of Elijah W. Hale and Frances Haley Hale. Bill
would go on to marry twice more but would have no children. He married Patience E. Carter, eldest
daughter of Lovell Carter and Sarah Ann Stallings Carter on Sept 14, 1890 in Smith Co. She passed
away before 1906. He next married Sarah Elizabeth Violett Dawson, daughter of Chapman Romel
Violett and Jane Harriet Hazzard Violett, on August 15, 1906. He passed away December 28, 1909
and was buried in the Violett cemetery on Lost Creek Rd. Out from the Rock City community.
