The "Rest Of The Picture"
This is the picture of the postcard cutoff photo submitted by Sue Gregory.
The first young man on the left is George Massey, son of Captain Buie (C. B.) and Effie Hanes Massey. C. B.
Massey was a well-known Baptist minister who resided at Pleasant Shade for many years. George contracted
T.B. a short time after this picture was made and died. He was not married. The Gregory and Russell brothers
were friends and lived near each other in the Sycamore Valley Community on Big Peyton's Creek near Pleasant
Shade. They were distant cousins as "Little Bill" Gregory was a great-great grandfather of the Russell boys. Just
how Eddie Gregory is related to the Gregory brothers is unknown. This picture was made of these young men in
anticipation of their having to fight in WWI. In fact, Fred Russell was already scheduled to report for training but
the war ended just before his time to leave.

Fred Edward Russell was born in 1896 and was a schoolteacher at the time the picture was made. He taught at
a number of schools in the area including Kittrell's near Pleasant Shade and Cato in nearby Trousdale County.
Much of his teaching career was in the Trousdale County School System in Hartsville, Tn. He was married to
Virginia Porter and he died in 1978. They were the parents of a number of children.

John Stanton Gregory was born in 1900 and died in 1967. He was married to Beulah Mary (maiden name Gregory)
and was the father of two children. Stanton lived most of his life near his birthplace on Big Peyton's Creek Road.

Joseph Herod (Joe) Russell was born in 1900 and died in 1980. He was married to Bessie Irene Piper, daughter
of Howard Eugene and Lassie Towns Piper. They were the parents of six children. Joe was a farmer and lived
nearly all his life in the Russell Hollow off Big Peyton's Creek Road near Pleasant Shade. He was also a long
time bus driver for the Smith County School System in the 1950's and 60's.

James Elston Gregory was born in 1898 and died in 1965. He was first married to Alma Smith, daughter of
Floyd and Lula Patterson Smith. There were no children from this marriage. Later, Elston was married to
Pearl Hackett. They had children and lived in Hartsville, Tn. where he was an auto mechanic.

Sue Gregory provided information on the Gregory boys.

John Stanton Gregory
This picture of Stanton Gregory was made in about 1920. He put fourth an unusual gaze which
stayed with him about all his life. It was almost like he could look through a person. He was the
father of Nancy Frances who is married to Barry Dickerson and also a son who died as an infant.
