Civil War Letter
This letter written during the Civil War on 10 November 1861. It looks like it was written by or to
John M. YOUNG or E.L. HOLLAND. However, from reading the last line, it may have been written
by a woman. The hardest places to read are where the letter has been folded for many years.

Sampson City Nov. 10 1861

Dear Brother, i once more seat my self
to rite you a few lines to let you no
we are all well at this time hoping when
this few lines reachers you they will find
you all well. I have nothing strange to
rite more than hard times and I fear worse
a coming. The yankeys is going (back) towards
Nashville like pigeons. they say they are going
to station at Franklin. John ses he thinks
you had better get your salt away as soon
as possible for fear the yankeys gets it.
if (Dandrige) comes up send me some (advice)
by him

Brother, I want you to
let me no when (Chane) is to be sold.
If I am well enough I want to go down there
then. John, let me no if you please.
If you don't let me no when it is I want
you to buy her and swap her to Jake. If
if you please she (has no husband)
to leave. Jake don't want to leave his wife.
I will give Jake for her if I can get the chance.

Give my best respects to Dock
and Martha. Tell them I think they might
right to me some times. John rite to me
and send it by with note if you want.
(come to see us) think you might be (home)
nothing mor but remane your loving sister
until death.
