Pvt. Joseph Sylvester Cato
Joseph Sylvester Cato-Lived in Smith County and enlisted July 21, 1861, at Camp of Instruction #941. He
was added to muster roll of Company H, Murry 's 4th Tennessee Cavalry under the company command of
Capt. Q. C. Sanders. Later the company would be combined with the 8th Tennessee Cavalry under the
command of Col. Baxter Smith. Under this new command the company became Co. C under the command
of Capt. Francis Cunningham, who would resign his commission. The company then would come under the
command for the rest of war under Capt. George C. Moore. Joe Cato was wounded at Fayetteville, North
Carolina in 1865. At that time his right arm was amputated.
