Carthage Courier Newspaper-Pleasant Shade Column Apr 29,1915. "Pleas Gregory, a highly respected and
well to do colored citizen, aged about 55 years, died Sunday at Nashville where he had been carried by
Dr. Beasley for an operation. His death was caused by an absess on the lung. The deceased had accumulated
considerable property and was respected by the white people as a man of sterling worth and honesty.
He was a member of the Baptist Church at Good Hope. Burial took place Tuesday at the home of the deceased."
Note: According to the Smith County marriage records:
Pleas Gregory married Laura Payne 2 Sep 1880. Her tombstone markings are probably on
the opposite side of her husband's tombstone which has fallen and too heavy to move.
