Extract of a letter from Virginia dated June 15

"The death of Mr. Long, one of the Scouts belonging to Captain Lewis's company stationed on Clinch is highly honorable. - The chief of the Indian party, who since has been discovered to be a Cherokee, fired at him and wounded him mortally, so that he fell. The Indian advanced to take his scalp, but he had stregth enough to poise his rifle and fire which laid the barbarian dead. Mr. Long expired a short time afterwards."
