Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a member of Finger Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Smith; her parents, R. Hatton and Euda Naylor Williams; one sister, Loranie Smith; and one brother, Ward Williams. She is survived by two sons, Leon Smith of Bethel Springs and Rayford Smith of Sacramento, CA; three sisters, Lueela Joyner of Adamsville, Beulah Young of Jackson, and Leoda Planeta of Orlando, FL; one brother, Warren Williams of Finger; along with five grandchildren, and five gr-grandchildren. C. DICKS of Guys, 85, died Sept. 17, 2001 at VA Medical Center in Memphis of cancer. Mr. Dicks was a carpenter, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Gravel Hill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Coln Dicks and his father, John William Dicks. He is survived by three daughters, Jeanette Barnes of Guys, Shirley A. Jarnigan and Linda Jo Griggs, both of Selmer; two sons, Jimmy Carroll Dicks of Rienzi, MS and Butch Dicks of Selmer; along with 11 grandchildren, 24 gr-grandchidren, and three gr-gr-grandchildren. CHARLES EWELL THORNTON, 73, of Walnut, MS, died Mon., Sept. 24, 2001 at Magnolia Regional Hospital. He was a member of Tiplersville Church of Christ, A Korean War Veteran, and a retiree of American Builtrite. His parents were the late C.C. "Tip" and Vergie Marybelle Shannon Thornton. Services were held Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. at Tiplersville Church of Christ with Shackelford Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Bro. Jerry Owens was the officiating minister. Burial was at Tiplersville Cemetery. COTTON WAFFIRD of Luka, MS, died Sept. 28, 2001 of injuries sustained in a care accident in Luka, MS Mr. Waffird was a member of the Luka Church of Christ and was a member of the Corinth IBEW Local #852. Mrs. McKenzie was a homemaker, a member of Stantonville Untied Methodist Church, and a member of the Adamsville Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis McKenzie and her parents, Ed and Mattie Jordan McCullough. Mrs. Shelton was a homemaker and a member of Chewalla Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 56 years. She taught school for approximately 6 years during World War II. Mrs. Shelton was preceded in death by her parents, John Oliver and Jessie Mullens Petty; two infant daughters; one brother, Mullens Petty. She is survived by her husband, Willie A. Shelton; three daughters, Vicki Shelton and husband, Steve Ressor of Jackson, Mary Fry and Husband Dennis of Memphis, and Martha Gray and husband Brent of Stantonville; one son, Avon Shelton and wife Belinda of Ramer; one brother Doyle Petty of Ramer; and five grandchildren, Scott Shelton, Ross Shelton, Will Shelton, Zach Fry and Isabella Gray. Mr. Truett was a retired Volkswagen mechanic. He was preceded in death by one son, John Robert Truett, Jr.; his parents Jack and Ann James Truett; and one brother, Mark Truett. He is survived by his wife, Lou Plunk Truett; one son Jason Truett of Finger; three sisters, Sandra White of Olive Branch, MS, Angie Leek of Memphis, and Kathi Martin of Finger; two brothers, Timothy Truett of Cleveland and Chris Truett of Hot Springs, AR. Mrs. Staton was born in McNairy County. She farmed as a young woman and later was employed with Salant and Salant as a seamstress and also worked in several other garment factories. She was a member of the World Wide Church of God. Miss Staton served the public most of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vroner and Lula Plunk Staton. She is survived by one sister, Loren Malone of Bethel Springs; two nieces, Brenda Malone and Jenny Komich; and two nephews, Raymond Malone and Staton Joran. HELTON of Bethel Springs, 54, died Mon., Oct. 1, 2001 at at his sister’s residence in Selmer of cancer. Mr. Helton was an employee of Redmon Asphalt Company. He is survived by his wife, Ann Hutcherson Helton; three daughter, Sharon Cruse and Shelia Parmely, both of Pocahontas, and Susan Knopf of Eastview; two sisters, Nancy Gray of Corinth, MS and Donna Edwards of Selmer; and six grandchildren, Brittany, Tyler, Kyle, John Lance, Justin Lane, and Abigail. She was preceded in death by her husband, Olahe F. Wagoner and her parents, Tommy and Josie Humphries Sanders. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Clayton and her parents, Dewey and Dell Hockaday Clark. Oct. 3, 2001 at West Tennessee Skilled Nursing Center of multi system failure. Mrs. Rowland was a homemaker and a member of Fourth Street Church of Christ in Selmer. She was born in Tishmingo County, Mississippi and grew up in Hardeman County. She was the daughter of the late William Preston and Martha Sue Campbell Parsons. She attended schools in Hardeman County. In 1941 she was married to Jessie Rowland and they made their home in the Woodville Community of Chester County, where they farmed. She had been in poor health for the past 10 years with rheumatored arthritis. She was preceded in death by one son, James David Rowland. She is survived by her husband, Jessie Howard Rowland of Hornsby; one daughter, Bonnie Faye Hatch of Henderson; one brother, Buddy Parsons of Lexington; five grandchildren and nine gr-grandchildren. Services were held Sat. Oct. 6 at 11 a.m. at Casey Funeral Home Chapel in Henderson with Bro. Randy Mead officiating. Mrs. Ellis was a homemaker and a Pentecostal. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Ellis; and her parents, Lee and Della Tubbs. She is survived by three sons, Bob Ellis of Bethel Springs, Bill Ellis of Watertown, WI, and Jerry Odell Ellis of Clarksville; three sister Ludie Brooks of Tuscumbia, AL, Nellie Greenhaw, and Alice Vandiverford both of Corinth, MS; along with fifteen grandchildren and several gr-grandchildren. Burial followed at Beauty Hill Cemetery in Bethel Springs. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LISA ROSS PARKER of Adamsville, 33, died Tues., Oct. 9, 2001 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville of acute myeloid leukemia and complications from a bone marrow transplant. Mrs. Parker was in insurance sales and was a service representative for First Guaranty Companies of Dallas, TX. She was a member of the Adamsville First United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Todd Parker of Adamsville; her parents, Tommy and Janice Ross of Adamsville; one sister, Janet Ross of Nashville; and her maternal grandmother, Lois Rhea of Savannah. Funeral services for Mrs. Parker were held on Fri., Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. at Adamsville First United Methodist Church with Steven Callicoatt officiating. Burial followed at Adamsville City Cemetery. PHILLIP EDWIN MEEK, 54, of Sevierville, passed away Fri., Oct. 12, 2001 at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee. Phillip was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, Sevierville where he served the church as a deacon, Chairman of Deacons, member of the Finance Committee, Church pianist, Sunday School teacher and choir member. Phillip was a 1965 graduate of Adamsville High School. He attended the University of Tennessee in Martin, and in 1971 earned his degree in agriculture education at UT-Knoxville. He served in the Alabama National Guard from 1966-1972. His community leadership began with the Sevier County Jaycees, eventually serving as a District Director, Vice-President and the President of the Tennessee Jaycees. Phillip served the United States Jaycees as a National Vice-President in 1980-1986. He was also selected to JCI Senator and served as President in 1985-1986. He was also selected as a member of the Volunteer Corp with the Tennessee Jaycees. Phillip was involved with the Sevier County Junior Miss Program since 1972. He has served as local chairman and master of ceremonies for the local program. He was President of the Sevier County High School Band Boosters for two years and served as chairman of the Drums Across America Program. Phillip was a Scout Leader for Troop 110 in Sevierville for many years. Phillip taught at Sevier County High School from 1971-1979. Until the present, he was going business with his partners as Styles Roofing in Sevierville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Lee and Flavie Irene Meek of Milledgeville; Father-in-law, Cecil Roy Judkins of Columbia; and infant daughter, Jennifer Leigh Meek of Sevierville. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carol Meek; one son, Phillip Edwin Meek, II; one daughter, Amanda Carole “Mandi” Meek; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Marion Judkins Merritt and B.J. Merritt of Mascotte, FL; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard “Jud” Judkins and wife Jan of Groveland, FL: three nephews, Richard, Ben, and Sam Judkins; his special aunt, Bonnie Phillips of Savannah; several cousins and numerous friends. ROBERT WALLACE AYERS of Ramer, 76, died Fri., Oct. 12, 2001 at Jackson General Hospital in Jackson. Mr. Ayers was born in Rolla, MO April 24, 1925, the son of Walter and Blanche Wallace Ayers. Mr. Ayers was a farmer and a member of Antioch Church of Christ. He served in World War II as a torpedo man on a submarine in the Navy. He served as a McNairy County Commissioner for many years and served as a chairman on the McNairy County Sol Conservation Board. He was united in marriage Oct. 30, 1948 to Shirley Clayton Ayers who survives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Blanche Ayers, one sister, Alma Ayers, and one granddaughter, Tracy Siler. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Clayton Ayers of Ramer; three daughter, Wanda Crider and husband Donnie of Atwood, Sherry Deaton and husband Randall of Adamsville, and Donna Siler and husband Nelson of Bethel Springs; four sons Bobby Ayers and wife Kathy and Dan Ayers and wife Lisa, all of Ramer, Bill Ayers and wife MaryAnne of Collierville, and Ron Ayers and wife Kim of Martin; two sisters, Louise Yarbrough and Helen Curtis, both of Ramer; two brothers, Bill Ayers of Jackson and George Ayers of Ramer; sixteen grandchildren; and two gr-grandchildren. Mrs. Bingham was disabled and a Baptist. Mrs. Bingham was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus Colbert and Willie Margaret Carroll Hollaway. She is survived by one daughter, Tina Wicker of Adamsville; two sons, Billy Hollaway of Counce and Steve Bingham of Morris Chapel; one sister, Barbara Cook of Paris; along with three nephews and six grandchildren. He was also a member of Milledgeville United Methodist Church, American Legion, Masonic Lodge #380 in Bath Springs, a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and a recipient of a Purple Heart.
