Kenneth Smartt, who was killed in France in August 1944, were held here yesterday afternoon, after his body was returned from overseas under the War Department re-burial program. Smartt, retired farmer and prominent church leader, died at his home at Hickory Creek Sunday evening at 6 o'clock. He had been in ill health for about 12 months. She had been ill since stricken 7 months ago when she was removed to her home. Funeral rites were held at the residence Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock with Allen Phy, minister of the Central Church of Christ, officiating. Burial was in the family plot in Mt. View cemetery. Miss Drake, daughter of William B. Drake and Tabitha Dillon Drake, was born in Van Buren county and moved here with her family at an early age. She became associated with Miss Ella McNeilly in the operation of a millinery shop here in 1922 and later went into business with her sister, Miss Nettie Drake, and Mrs. George Oldham. The Drake sisters purchased the business in 1927 and have operated it since. The deceased was a member of the Church of Christ since early childhood. Surviving are three brothers, Frank and Eugene Drake of McMinnville, and U. Y Drake, Somerset, Ky., and two sisters, Miss Nettie Drake, McMinnville, and Mrs. O.C. Tidwell, Glenwood Springs, Colo. May 5 William Lee Davis, 70, native of McMinnville, died May 5, at the family home, 1416 E. Gilbert, Muncie, Ind. Funeral services were held the following day in Muncie with burial in Elm Ridge cemetery. The eldest son of John and Jane Davis, the deceased was born and reared in McMinnville. he had lived in Indiana for 26 years and was employed by Warner Gear Corp. for 21 years. Mr. Davis was a member of the Chris Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Octa J. Davis; four sons, Glen Morgan, Max and Charles Davis, and two daughters, Mrs. Leo Northcutt and Mrs. Ruby Reynolds. Also two brothers, Charles and Thomas Davis, and one sister, Mrs. Callie Barrett. *** Love, Shelby Southern Standard May 27, 1949 First District Farmer Fatally Injured In Runaway Monday A first district farmer died early Tuesday morning of injuries received the previous day when a team of mules, hitched to a hay wagon, ran away at his home in the Arcadia community, one and a half miles south of the Beersheba road. Shelby Love, 66-year-old farmer, died in a local hospital Tuesday morning at 4 o'clock from serious chest injuries suffered in the accident, which occurred about 3:45 o'clock Monday afternoon. The accident occurred as Mr. Love and Cody Medley, neighbor farmer, were unloading hay in the barn at the Love home. Form reports it is apparent that the runaway team and wagon passed over Mr. Love's body inflicting the injuries. The deceased man's son, Robert S. Love, said that his father had been subject to heart trouble, and it is apparent that he suffered an attack, falling into the team and causing the runaway. Mr. Medley was at the rear of the barn when the accident occurred and did not witness the tragedy. Mr. Love was a native of DeKalb county, having moved here in April 1947 from the area of the Center Hill reservoir. He had previously purchased the Frank Winton farm at Arcadia and had resided there since that time. The deceased was a son of Franklin Love and Parelee Trusty Love and was born March 19, 1883. He was married to Miss Ara Givens in August 1916, and she survives. Mr. Love was a member of the Masonic Lodge. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Robert Shelby Love of McMinnville; two brothers, Dr. L. S. Love of Nashville, and J.R. Love, Smithville. Also one sister, Miss Sallie Love, McMinnville. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Smithville Methodist Church. Rev. H.Thorton Fowler, pastor of the First Methodist Chruch, Cookeville, officiated and burial was in the Whorton Springs Cemetery. High's were in charge of arrangements. *** Jarrell, Charles W. Southern Standard May 27, 1949 Chas. W. Jarrell Dies In Hospital Charles W. Jarrell, grandfather of Daniel W. (Boone) Jarrell, well known McMinnville industrial worker and baseball player, died at Good Samaritan Hospital, Woodbury, Sunday morning at 10 o'clock. He had been in ill health for 3 years and had been confined to the hospital for several days. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Shady Grove cemetery. John W. High officiated. Burial was at a Shady Grove. Mr. Jarrell, native of Coffee county, was born July 6, 1870. His parents were James Jarrell and Catherine Ayuers Jarrell and he was married to Miss Betty Watson, who survives. The deceased, 78 years of age, was a retired farmer and a member of the Church of Christ. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Bryon Keel, Mt. Leo; Mrs. J. H. Bishop, Milton, Texas, and Mrs. Ella Trawick of McMinnville; four brothers, W. H. , J. H., and R.T. Jarrell, Morrison, and F. M. Jarrell, Manchester. Also two sisters, Mrs. Olie Finger, Manchester, and Mrs. Ada Albright, Oak Ridge. High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ***
