From the research I have gathered, it seems William Childress/Childers, father of John,
brought his family to Old Pendleton District SC before the Revolution. I do not know if he did
die in the Revolution. I have not pursued this, but plan to do so in the near future. I have
not done any research in this area. The fact has not been proven by documented records that
William is the father of the listed children, except some old letters in the Taylor family
that list Wm as the father of Rebecca who married James Taylor. However, he is the logical
choice, based on non- documented evidence. The file on William is subject to change as I find
updated information. The children listed for William are documented by evidence.

Rebecca Childress is mentioned as the aunt of the John Childress children in a Cherokee
application document. So she would be the sister of John, Abraham, and Douglas.
I do think Rebekah is the second wife of James Taylor. He probably married her after he had
migrated to SC from Rutherford Co NC.

Notes for James S. Taylor:
James S. Taylor was (more than likely) the ggg grandfather of my mother Gladys Beatrice Smith.
Before the Revolution, a James Taylor resided in Rutherford Co NC. He received a land grant
and moved to SC . James' son William N. Taylor was born in SC in 1794. He migrated to Lumpkin
Co Georgia in the early 1800's. His daughter Harriet Elizabeth Taylor married Thomas Harrison
Smith. Their first born son William Joseph was the grandfather of my mother. However, I have
not firmly established that this James is the son of Robert (1715) He could have been the son

of William, son of Robert who migrated to Buncombe near his brother John.

Possibly, Rebekah Childress was the second wife of James Taylor. I do not know who he married
prior to the Rev War. He was living in Rutherford Co NC once old Tryon at the time. Brothers:
Jeremiah, Arthur, Caleb, Joshua and old Robert, father were also in the Revolution.

(Dower renounced Rebekah Taylor to William Smith Oct 11, 1797.) Rebekah Taylor was the
daughter of William Childress of Old Pendleton Co SC.according to some family information from
another family researcher.

James is listed in the Federal census for Spartanburg in the years: 1800,and 1810 Spartanburg
Co SC.
Rebekah and son David are in the 1820 census for Spartanburg Co living as neighbors. His son
William (b. 1794) moved to Ga in the 1820's.

Old Tryon Co NC Deeds: James Taylor, 300 acres on both sides of Glenhorn's Creek that joins
James Adair's land Warrant 1109 Jan 19, 1773.

July 1774 Court session James Taylor and Merry McGuire were ordered by the court to serve as
constables in Tryon County. Source: Tryon Co NC Minutes of Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions
1769-1779. This James Taylor was one of the few Taylors living near old Robert, 3 others:
Arthur, Joshua and Caleb. All firmly established as sons of old Robert.

A James Taylor is mentioned many times in Old Tryon Co NC records in the 1778's. He is also
mentioned in many records for Rutherford Co before 1790. Others mentioned in Rutherford old
Robert Taylor and sons: Caleb, Joshua, John . William, and Arthur.

In April of 1778, James Taylor was appointed guardian of the children of the late George Watts
upon the death of Benjamin Harden, former guardian. Children listed were: Rachael, Leah,
Jacob, and F? Minors of George Watts. Balance of the estate of the minor children was 229

I have two James Taylors listed in the Rev War for NC. I do not know which James Taylor is the
correct one.

James NC .Sergeant Apr 20, 1784 received 535 acres ( I do knt know if this is the same James
Taylor)

A Martha Taylor b/ 1785 in SC is living with Parker in 1850 Newton Co. I have not found where
she might fit in this picture. I have not definitely established Parker is a family member.
This was sent by another member of the James Taylor family. She could well be an unmarried
sister to Parker. Possibly Martha is an older sister of Parker.

the following: family bibles, library materials, on line data bases, especially census
records, family trees,courthouse records, State and local government files. I have tried to be
as accurate as possible, but mistakes can be made. I found this many times in census records.

I have conflicting names for the husband of Nancy Duncan Childers Childress in affidavits: one
being Abraham, another John. In the one affidavit listing Abraham, another name is crossed out
and Abraham written in.I think this person was prompted to do so. I am leaning more toward
John, as he is definitely listed in the early census for old Pendleton Co SC which backs up
the affidavit of John M. Taylor who states John was the father of his wife. He was very
adament about this. He also states John's wife was Nancy Duncan, Cherokee, sister of John
Duncan. John Duncan was definitely Cherokee and received land on High Tower River in Ga before
the removal. Also, affidavits state he had two brothers Abraham or Abram and Douglas.I have
found Douglas and all his family. which supports this statement.

It seems apparent by all records I have found that : John Childers was one half Cherokee, His
mother was full and his father was white. According to records, they lived among the Cherokee
and the children of John and Nancy Duncan Childress Childers spoke the language. The Childress
name was changed to Childers when the family moved to Georgia before the removal. Family
tradition states they changed their name so that no one would know they were Eastern Cherokee.

Before 1790, John was living in Old Pendleton Co SC . He was listed in old Pendleton until
1810. According to his grandson Ira Childers,(b 1824 McMinn Co Tn he died before the removal.
He was listed in the 1820 census for Greenville Co SC. He was not listed on the 1830 census
for McMinn Co TN with Nancy. She is living next door to their older son William C.. According
to the Cherokee application, his family kept the secret of the Childress heritage as a
Cherokee because they did not want anyone to know about this. Apparently they were afraid or
ashamed of the fact. (Affidavit: Cherokee application for John H. Hubbard,grandson) John died
several years before Nancy Duncan Childers who was born in 1774.

Son, Samuel Childress stated in his prison record, he, Samuel, was born in Laurens Co in 1811,
but moved on to Greenville Co. SC as a child. In 1820, they are living in Greenville Co SC.
This apparently was where they met the Taylor family as my ggggrandparents William Taylor Jr.
and Anna Childers were married in Greenville Co SC before moving to Lumpkin Co Ga prior to
1830. Samuel lists his brothers and sisters but he does not mention his father. Probably
because he had already died. (see listing of siblings under Samuel Childress)

In 1830, Nancy was living next door to her older son William Childers,father of Ira, near Lem
Childress/Childers' Mill in McMinn Co TN. Living next door to William were Thomas and Mary
Childress/Childers Goff. Mary was a daughter of John and Nancy. (They were listed as
Childress, which was very common for the name to switch back and forth from Childers to
Childress.)

Between 1830-1833, Nancy ChildersChildress, wife to John had moved to Lumpkin Co. She was
listed on the 1834 Lumpkin Co census with 3 children who would be Martha, and Nancy and one of
the others. I am sure she got her children out before the removal because she was almost full
Cherokee herself. (Cherokee application for great grandson) The Goff family moved to Lumpkin
Co Ga, also. She had now changed her name to Childers.

In 1840, Nancy was still living in Lumpkin Co/ Captain John's District, near all the Taylor
Family members that her children married into. Near her is Robert Childers and one female same
age range. This is more than likely a relative of her husband.Nancy continued in the Lumpkin
Co census through 1850.
In 1860, she was listed with her daughter Nancy Childers Hubbard in Forsyth Co. Ga. She dies
soon after.

According to a document in the Cherokee application package of John H. Hubbard grandson of
John, the affidavit of Ira Childers, son of William C. Childers, states: his grandfather had
two brothers living in Bradley Co Tennessee during the time of the removal of the Cherokees.
They were Lem and Gid Childers.They were all part Cherokees. These were more than likely the
nephews of John and sons of Abraham and part Cherokee. They would have been too young to be
the brothers of John. However, they were on Eastern Cherokee Rolls. Lemuel was sent to Indian
Territory Arkansas and was listed on the census there.

Another affidavit by John M. Taylor, first cousin to John Hubbard, states John
Childers/Childress wife was Nancy Duncan. She was the mother of his mother Martha
Childers/Childress. (The Duncans were almost full Cherokee)

An entry in the early records for Cherokees in TN states Lemuel Childers Childress was white
and married Nancy Vann/ Cherokee. So the Cherokee Nation must have been stronger on the Duncan
and Vann sides, unless John, Abraham, and Douglas had different mothers. Lemuel Childers
probably did not claim Cherokee heritage through his father.

In another Affidavit by John M. Taylor, he states clearly his g grandfather was John
Childers/Childress. He states he does not know if his grandfather John was recognized as
Cherokee but all his children were. He states his mother Martha Childress Taylor told him she
and her people were raised among the Indian tribe and could speak the language.

They were raised in Pendleton Co, according to him, which conflicts with the prison record of
Samuel Childress/Childers who stated he was born in Laurens but grew up in Greeneville Co SC.
(He is definitely a brother, because he named all his brothers and sisters and who they
married. The information he gave was correct. However, they could have moved a few times. They
did reside in Old Pendleton from 1790 until before 1820. Old Pendleton was at one time a part
of Laurens. Rebecca, daughter of John and Nancy Childress Childers married William Burns. They
are listed in the 1840 census for Pickens Co Sc which was at one time,old Pendleton, also.

John Taylor states after his grandfather John Childers/Childress died in Anderson Co SC (Once
old Pendleton) and his Grandmother moved to Georgia, but she is on the 1830 census for McMinn
Co next door to her son William and daughter Mary, and husband Thomas Goff. She moved to
Georgia before 1840. He states he never saw his Uncle Abraham nor Douglas. He states Douglas
Childers had a daughter Annie who married her first cousin William, brother to his mother.
Douglas also lived in Pickens Co SC once old Pendleton before migrating to Georgia.

Robert Childers living next door to Nancy in the 1840 census for Lumpkin Co is possibly a
first cousin to John. He is in the same age range.

Cherokee info:
William Ira Childers was born in McMinn Co Tn in 1824 and remembers the removal well ; how
Lem, his son Levi, Gid and his son Henry were removed from their lands and taken off with all
the other Cherokees. This was between 1835-1838. I have not found Gideon. Possibly he was one
of those who did not reach Cherokee lands and is buried somewhere between Tennessee and
Arkansas.

Lemuel Childers/Childress is on the removal list for Tennessee, according to the Cherokee
application. Lem Childers is also on the 1835 Henderson Roll of Eastern Cherokees. Grandson,
Levi and his descendants are in Indian Territory, Oklahoma. I think I saw them in Sequoyah Co.
Their descendants are on the Cherokee Rolls.
Ira Childers states all his Childers relatives were of Cherokee descent, but his mother was
white. His grandfather had already died before the removal.

His nephew, John Hubbard, son of Nancy Childress Hubbard, stated to the Guion- Miller board
that none of the family talked about his grandfather because he was a Cherokee and they did
not want anyone in Ga to know it and they did not want to claim kin to the Cherokees.

In a will dated March 23, 1825 in Greenville Co SC, Richard Childers Sr. has his executors:
sons John and Robert. His heirs are : Wife Martha, sons: Robert, John, Abraham, daughters:
Fanny, Nancy, Sarah, Hannah, Patsy Melindy, Betsy and Lucy. I do not know if this is the same
Abraham and John but the family is probably related.

John Childress between the age of 20-30 is living next door to Samuel, son of John, in the
1830 census for McMinn Co Tn. I definitely think he is a son of Nancy and Abraham, too. He
must have died or stayed in Tennessee. He has one son under the age of 5. His wife is between
20-30.

I have not, to date, been able to pinpoint the parents of John, Abraham, and Douglas Childers.
If John was in fact, full Cherokee, as the application states, they would have gone by their
Cherokee name. I think he was probably half Cherokee.
Several of the children of Isaiah and Nancy Childers/Childress Hubbard filed on the Guion-
Miller Roll. I only ordered that of John.

Notes for Nancy "Patsy" Duncan:

I found Nancy Childers in several census records and in the Cherokee application for John
Hubbard, her grandson.

According to the Cherokee application of John H Hubbard , Nancy Childers moved to Lumpkin Co
Ga from TN long after John Childer's death. She is listed on the Lumpkin Co Census for 1834.
He re-filed and said John Taylor said his father was John Childers, not Abraham, but Ira

Childers, grandson and son of William C. Childers who lived in TN said his grandfather was
Abe and grandmother was "Patsy", Nancy. However another name has been crossed through and the
word Abe is written over it which leads me to believe this document was altered and the father
is John Childers.

An extensive letter by John Taylor states Nancy was the sister of John Duncan who was also of
the Eastern Cherokee line. He also firmly states his grandfather was John Childress/Childers
and his brothers were Abraham and Douglas. I have found Douglas in census records.

In 1820, He is listed in Gwinnett Co Ga Age 24-45, 3 males under 10, 1 female to age 10, 1
female 26-45.

In 1840 he is listed in Coosa Co Ala age 50-60 wife age 40-50, 1 F (under 5) 2 f (5-10_ 1 f
(10-15)

In 1850, he is living in Clairborne Co La. Wife Ama b. SC age 54. He is age 62. Missouri age
17 is listed as born in Ga. Melilda? age 12 was born in Ga so they were in Ga in 1838.

Living next door son, Abram, age 37 b SC. Also living next door is William , b 1810 SC so they
were living in SC in 1810. I could not find a Douglas Childers/Childress in 1810 SC, so
Douglas was probably his middle name.

In 1860, Ama has died and he is living with son William in La Grange Layfayette Co, Arkansas,
age 77.

Vann 1812 in Tn, daughter of John Vann and Mary Terrapin. She was born Abt. 1790 in NC, and
died Bef. 1850 in TN.

Notes for Lemuel Childers Childress:
Lem Childers is listed in Indian Territory Arkansas (alone) living near his son Levi and
daughter Eliza McNair. He is listed on several Cherokee Rolls. The information furnished by
nephew, Ira Childers is correct. He was sent on the trail along with son Levi. For many years
he owned a Mill in McMinn or Bradley Co Tn. Some records reference him as white. However, he
did go on the trail, possibly to be with his wife.

He is listed as a member of the Childers family from Old Pendleton in Eastern Cherokee
affidavits of the John Childers family. John would be his uncle.
When my gggg uncle Samuel Childers Childress went to prison in Tn, his address was given as:
he was living near Lem Childer's Mill. Lem would have been his first cousin.
I have a good bit of information on Lemuel that I have not recorded in this data base.

census for Dawson Co, Caroline is 29, Martha is 20, Rebecca is 19, and Perry is 3. In the 1850
census: Caroline is 19, Rebecca is 9, Sally is 7. There are three sons: John 22, William 17,
and Samuel 14. All the children were born in Tennessee, so they must have come to Ga around
1839.

William lived near Lem Childress Mill in MCMinn Co TN before and during the time of the
removal. He was listed living next door to his mother Nancy Childress/Childers in the 1830
census for McMinn Co Tn. Next door to him was Thomas Goff and his wife Mary. Mary was the
sister of William. According to the Cherokee application affivadit of his son Ira Childers,
Lem Childress was his great uncle and the brother of his grandfather \John, who died around
1830 in McMinn CO TN. Another brother, Gideon was sent on the trail from Bradley/McMinn Co,
too. Gideon and Lemuel were really too young to be a brother to John so I thinkthey were
nephews to John and son of Abraham. I think Isaac Childress plays a role in this family
senario. He moved to Alabama before the removal. However I have not found him in any record
for Cherokee applications. Henry Childress also lived in Alabama and was listed in Cherokee
applications as son of Gideon. This might be a major clue.

Civil War service record and disability discharge: (copy in my files)
William was a private in the 38th Ga Volunters, Captain T.W. Bomar's Company S. He was
enlisted at Cropsville, Dawson Co Ga by Lieutenant Taylor on Dec 20, 1861 to serve three
years. He was born in Laurens District SC . At enlistment, he was age 64, 5 ft 10 in tall,
dark complexion, dark hair and black eyes. (This was an indicatior of his Cherokee heritage)
He was listed as a farmer. He was discharged on a disibility at Camp Wilson,Springfield Ga.
August 9, 1862. His commanding captain was J.C. Hendrix. He had an injured shoulder and he was
generally in poor health due to his age. His disability was approved by W.W. Wilson and W.S.
Lawton, surgeons. He received one month and nine day's pay with a total of $15.60.

First enlisted at Cropsville/Dawson Co Ga. Later was enlisted at Savannah by Captain

B.F. Bromar in 1862. He was last paid by Lieut. L.C. Hendrix on the 31st day of
December 1863. He was discharged in Virginia and received his back pay plus
travelling money to his place of enrollment: Gainesville, Ga. He owed the
Confederate states $31 for his clothing. He received a total of $138.60 for travel
expenses and back pay. He had to travel 897 miles back home to Ga with a severely
injured and totally useless arm.
He is listed as age 26, born in Bradley Co Tn , a farmer, having fair complexion,
black eyes, dark hair, height 5'6". He could not write but made his mark on the
document.

Samuel Childress was received in the Penitentiary 4 December 1834. He was 23 years of age 5'7"
high and weighed 166 lbs. Heavy built. brown hair blue eyes and sandy beard, Has a small scar
above the left eye, another on the instep of the left foot and another near the big toe on the
same foot, Chiefly follows farming. Born in Laurens Co SC and brought up in Greenville Co in
the same state. His mother, six sisters, and one brother reside in Lumpkin Co Ga. Four of the
sisters married as follows: to William Taylor, James P. Neal. Thomas Burns, and Thomas Goff.
Also a brother (William C) residing near Lem Childress' mill in the Cherokee purchase of Tenn.
He has a wife and three children living with her father William Gray on Ball Play Creek,
Monroe Co Tn. He was found guilty of forgery at the circuit court of Monroe Co Tn and
sentenced to three years confinement in the Jail and Penitentiary House of the State of
Tennessee, Died 22 Nov 1835 of Chronic Direah (sic) Ledger 45 page 23.
I have found one of the children, John C. Childers, and his family, who migrated to Murray Co
Ga when his mother Ruth Gray Childers Ball moved to this area with her new husband Nelson Ball
from TN.

According to the Cherokee application for John H. Hubbard Nancy was the daughter of Abraham
and Katie Childers. He later changed it to Abraham and Patsy, then John Childers on the advice
of his uncle John M. Taylor, he states his grandfather was John Childers. All evidence points
this to be a fact.

He states Lemuel Childers in TN was on roll at the time of the treaty and was a full blooded
Cherokee. He states Lemuel Childers was the first cousin of his mother Nancy.

Lemuel J. Childers is on the Dawes List # 2662. John C Childers is 2663, Charlie A, Childers

According to the affivadit of Ira Childers, grandson of Abraham and Nancy Childers, he lived
near his grandparents for years in McMinn Co.Tennessee as a young boy and remembers the family
well. He states his Grandmother Nancy had a brother Riley Wilkerson, which would be a half-
brother.

Nancy Wilkerson Childers brought the children to Lumpkin Co Ga. before the removal. By this
time John had died. Unfortunately, his brother's sons: Lem and Gideon and their sons were
sent to Indian Territory. Gideon and son Levi are later found on the 1850 census for Arkansas,
Indian Territory. At this time Oklahoma was not a state.

Samuel E Taylor served in the Civil War as a 2nd and 1st lieutenant in the Georgia 38th
Infantry Company N from Dawson Co Ga. This Unit was also called "Wright's Legion" and was also
known as Company L. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant Oct 13, 1861. He was elected 1st Lieutenant
April 19. 1862. He was listed as sick in camp on September 21, 1863. He resigned in October
of 1863. This unit surrendered at Appomattox in 1865. This company fought with Northern Va
commanded by General Robert E. Lee.

Thomas Harrison Smith came from South Carolina first Cherokee then Lumpkin Co Ga in 1846
according to his CSA pension application. He was a farmer and land owner by trade, but,
according to older family members, he liked to explore the gold fields in other regions of the
country. He supposedly named his children from places he traveled, gold- rich areas or
legendary gold finds. He enjoyed his trips as a gold miner.

He was prosperous by the standards set in North Georgia in the 1850's-1870's. He was educated,
could read and write extremey well, based on documents he signed. While in his early 20's he
was able to purchase large parcels of land and build or purchase a large home for his family.
(I have photo). He is in all the census records for Georgia from 1850-1910 as a farmer, so if
he travelled West, I feel it was a one-time trip in the late 1850's. I was told by an older
relative who is the only living grandchild of Thomas Harrison Smith, that he travelled West
through the Panama Canal and went up the coast on a boat to California. I did some checking
and that was indeed one of the routes that was taken. I think he went with his parents who got
back to Ga before 1860. That is probably why they were not listed on any census for 1850, They
were probably still travelling home.

Thomas Harrison Smith enlisted in The Cherokee Legion Company D Infantry , July 13, 1863 at
Shiloa, Ga. He served in the CSA nitre works during his service as a private. This infantry
was also known as the Cherokee Repellers. They saw no major action in the war. Company D was
known as "The Cherokee Repellers."( Film # M226 roll 56) Also listed with him was Moses Smith/

Updated info: According to his pension application, he was sent to Col. Findley's Regiment
Company A, Oct. 1864. This was a part of General Barrett's Mounted Militia. He mentions C.
Wooford, Capt James L. Heard, and Joshua A. Dooley as being the leaders in his regiment. He
surrendered at Atlanta, Ga. He was met by one of the leaders of his company and this was
verified in an affidavit. His regiment surrendered at Folkston, Ga. On his Civil War pension
application he states he arrived in Georgia from SC in 1846

He was in his 80's, very frail, sick and almost blind when the application for a pension was
applied for. He was turned down initially, because he did not remember the facts correctly,but
his original record must have been found, and his application was backed up by letters of
leaders in the same regiment, helping him to receive a pension until his death. By this time,
he had had to sell all his large land holdings to George A. Ledbetter, husband of his
daughter Margaret and A.W. Roberts. ( I have documented records)

. I have been told recently he was the son of William and Sarah Smith /Samford District Dawson
Co Ga. listed in the 1860 census. I have a photo of them from a family member, and the
resemblance is striking. This person stated that they received a photo of the family who is
mentioned as Thomas and Harriet and the chilkdren on the front porch of their home was
actually William and Sarah and the grandchildren. This would make sense as Thomas and Harriet
would not be as old as the couple in the poicture.I have a picture of Thomas sitting in a
chair behind the same house, tyhe children in the previous photo are older but Thomas looks
younger. So, the family photo has to be Thomas' parents. They look like an older version of
the old picture I have of his parents in earlier days.
Also, another family member has quite recently arisen: Nancy Smith, according to the
researcher, was the sister of Thomas. She married James J. Elliott in Lumpkin Co right after
Thomas married Harriet. In 1850, they were living in Lumpkin County Keiths District.
She was living next door to Miles Hampton Smith in 1860 Forsyth County/ He named a daughter
Nancy. Hampton is a given name in the Thomas Harrison Smith family.By 1870, theNancy and most
of her family had moved to Yell County Arkansas/ In 1880, the census gives her as born in SC
and parents born in SC, the same as Thomas/

Moses Smith, holds a piece of the Smith puzzle, I think:possibly he was a brotheror uncle to
Thomas/ He was born in SC in 1811. He was living in Pickens Co SC in 1840 and 1850. By 1860,
he was living in Conns Creek, Cherokee Co Ga. By 1865, he had moved next door to Thomas
Harrison Smith and his family. By 1880, he was the tax receiver for Dawson Co, which was at
one time Lumpkin Co. They all lived at Yellow Creek District/ DawsonCo. as neighbors until
they died of old age.The 1880 census ststes they were both born in Sc and their parents were
born in SC. In the 1910 census for Dawson Co/ Yellow Creek, Texas Smith Bailley and son
Clifford are listed as living with daughters of Moses, who had died by this time. Texas Smith
Bailley was listed as aunt and Clifford as cousin. Also listed as head of household is niece
Jane Hardin.

Before 1870, Moses moved next door to my Thomas in Yellow Creek District, Dawson Co. They
lived as neighbors until both died of old age. In 1910, Thomas' daughter Texie and her son
Clifton are listed as living in the Moses Smith household with the surviving daughter. Texie
is listed as "aunt" and Clifton a "cousin". If Thomas and Moses were brothers, Texie would be
the cousin of Ann Smith. She was alos listed in the 1910 census for Conns Creek Cherokee
County Ga with son in law Paul Gilstrap whose wife had just died.
According to one on line tree Moses was the son of Moses Sr. of Pickens Co and they have a
Thomas Smith listed as a brother, with no other information. I have tried to contact the
person who was responsible for this information but my e-mail was returned. Moses married Mary
Boyd, an older widow in Pickens.
Several trees give Moses and William as sons of old John Bucker Revolutionary War patriot who
died in Pickens Co SC at almost 100.Possibly this is correct but I cannot find any
documentation to support this as a fact.
Another piece to consider: Living in Conns Creek in 1850 was James Smith (b 1793 SC),
blacksmith, and wife Elizabeth and their daughter or daughter- in- law Elizabeth, with a young
son William L., age 6.
By 1860, Elizabeth had died and James was living alone, next door to Moses Smith!!! He was age
67. I think he might be a brother to William Smith, who was a father of Thomas.
I think the following places these people as related : from Cherokee Co Ga, James, Thomas
Harrison, and Moses all joined the Cherokee Legion Company D at Shiloa on July 13, 1863. I
have copies of their assignments and ranks.
Another possibility that I found was Amaziah Smith(b SC 1827) who was living in Cherokee Co/Conns District in 1860. His mother, Margaret, age 62, from SC, was living with him. Thomas Harrison named his first born: Margaret. He also named his second son Amaziah or
Emaziah.(spelled both ways). If I could find the husband of Margaret, I might find the missing
piece to this perplexing puzzle. Amaziah is a very unusual name and Thomas named his second son Amaziah. I do not think this is a coincidence. According to the births of the children andthe state of birth, he came to Cherokee Co Ga between 1845-49. Possibly, Amaziah was a first cousin. Another connection that might fit are the following: Joseph W., Miles Hampton, and Samuel all
lived in Forsyth Co in 1850 and according to the children, they too arrived from SC to Ga
around 1846. My Thomas second son Amaziah (b 1854) named his son Hampton. An older Hampton
also moved on to old Milton from Forsyth Co. So did my great Grandfather William Joseph (b
1852). He was a farmer there for about 20 years.

Her family has the Smith bible Thomas Harrison Smith is holding in the old picture. This same
bible records the marriage of William Joseph Smith and Mary Gilstrap/ It lists all their
children.

Thomas Harrison Smith's first born son William Joseph Smith (b 1852) married Mary Lizabeth
(Elizabeth) Gilstrap, daughter of Charles Asberry and Martha Jane Willson Gilstrap, in
Cherokee Co Sept, 1874, at Ophir District near the Forsyth County Line. They were my great
grandparents.
In summation, more than likely Thomas Harrison Smith was the grandson of John Buckner Smith of
Pickens Co SC. Too many facts point to this.

He lived with his son Fonsy in Lamar Co for several years before his death. He would
visit my grandpa Oscar Smith on the back of a wagon sitting in his special chair. He
had arthritis so they would just lift him chair and all off the wagon and onto the
ground under the big oak trees, where he would sit until ready to leave.

William Joseph had three wives, but only two had children: Sarah Elizabeth Roach abd
Mary Elizabeth Gilstrap.
Four babies died: Lynton, Elmer, Lewis, and Ola.

I grew up around Aunt Lula Smith McGaha all my life and her family has the large
oval picture of Mary Gilstrap Smith. They are older than me and know the story of
the Gilstrap family well. She was their grandmother. She was my great grandmother.

Mary's mother Martha Jane Willson Gilstrap died tragically in a drowning accident in
the river in Cherokee Co in the 1860's leaving Mary to be raised by her Uncle
William Maxvile and Aunt Frances Gilstrap who were living in Cherokee Co Ga then.
She is listed in their household in the 1870 census for Cherokee Co Ga.
One person said Martha Jane Willson Gilstrap fell off the ferry run by Bright Nelson
Gilstrap, her brother in law. I do not know this as fact, only that she drowned in
the river.

One family member said Mary Gilstrap Smith died in Pickens Co Ga; another said old
Milton Co. The family was moving from one county to another at this time. In 1900
census, she was living in Jasper District Pickens Co. She died right after son Fonsy
was born. In 1910 William, widow, with the children was living in old Milton Co.

According to the old Smith Family Bible, she is buried in Gordon Co Ga. I have not

His headstone shows his name as Amaziah but the 1860 census gives Emmerziah, other
census as simply Emmer or Emma. However, his marriage record states Emazias J. We
will probably never know his true name.

In 1860 I found a listing for Eber Smith b 1823 SC.in Dawson Co. He came to Ga
based on children's ages in about 1845. Amaziah named his son Barney Eber. Could
this older Eber in Dawson and Amaziah b 1825 SC living in Cherokee be brothers and
brothers to Thomas Harrison? These names are unusual.

him to the nearest hospital in Monroe County. He died shortly after.
His nephew Clifton Bailley, son of Texas Smith Bailley, sister and his sister
Eldorado are living with him in the 1920 and 1930 censuses. He never married.

Hubbard states Mrs John Childers, Ne: Nancy Duncan was half Cherokee and did affiliate with
the Cherokee Tribe. She was the sister of John Duncan. Nov 16, 1908.

John M. Taylor wrote an affidavit for Thomas Harrison Smith, his brother-in law, to receive
Civil War pension funds. In his affidavit he states he, himself, was a Lieutenant in Col.
William Barrett's Battn.Mounted Militia of Dawson County before the surrender.

According to the Cherokee application of John H. Hubbard grandson of Abraham, affidavit of
Ira Childers, son of William C. Childers, states: his grandfather Abraham had two brothers
living in Bradley Tennessee during the time of the removal of the Cherokees. They were Lem and
Gid Childers.They were all Cherokees. He was born in McMen (sic) Co Tn in 1824 and and
remembers the incident well , how Lem, his son Levi, Gid and his son Henry were removed from
their lands and taken off with all the other Cherokees. This was between 1835-1838. He states
all his Childers relatives were of Cherokee descent and were recognized as such,but his mother
was white. Affidavit was given on April 1908, when Ira was 83. Ira goes on to state he was the
son of William Childers, brother to Nancy Hubbard.
He also names the children of his grandparents Abe and Patsy Childers: Nancy Hubbard, Annie
Taylor, the wife of William Taylor, Patsy Taylor, the wife of John Taylor, William Childers,
Jack Childers, Sam Childers, and Abe Childers.
However, John Hubbard states Lem Childers was a first cousin to Nancy Childers Hubbard his
mother. He has so many inconsistencies in his application it is difficult to sort out.

Notes for John Henry Hubbard:
I have a very extensive Cherokee application on John Hubbard. He filed under his mother Nancy
Childers Hubbard whose father Abraham Childers according to the application was a full
Cherokee. Abraham died in McMinn Co TN before the removal. His brothers : Lem and Gid and
their families were sent on the trail. He also applied through the Hubbard Family. He gives
the names of his grandfather as Johnnie Hubbard. he lists the wife and all the children of
this Hubbard family.
John H. Hubbard was denied funds because he could not make up his mind who his ancestors were.
The most extensive and accurate account was from an affidavit of the grandson of John or Abe
and Nancy Wilkerson Childers (see William Ira Childers fact sheet) In 1908, when he applied
for Cherokee funs, he was living in Flowery Branch, Hall Co Ga. He and all his children were
rejected because he could not prove who his Cherokee Ancestors were. He kept changing his mind
about names.

The major portion of the file of Isaiah Hubbard is from the Cherokee application of John Henry
Hubbard.
