CHAPTER VI, RALPH SHELTON(5)
Ralph Shelton(5) was born in Middlesex County, Virginia in 1709 and was baptized there on October 23, that year. Early in his life his father purchased land along the line between Middlesex and Essex Counties and remained on the land until his death in 1789. Ralph(5) married Mary Daniel in Middlesex County on June 10, 1731. In 1740, he is on record in Essex County, having in May that year presented a certificate for payment to the Essex Court for taking up a runaway slave, Cheshire, belonging to Mrs. Winifred Webb of Richmond. Shortly thereafter, after starting his family, Ralph Shelton(5), and his brother Crispin, turned toward Amelia County, nearly a hundred miles to the southwest, the county having been created in 1734 from Brunswick and Prince George Counties. Amelia at first also included the areas now in Prince Edward and Nottaway Counties. On September 20, 1745 Ralph Shelton(5) received a royal grant of 4OO acres in Amelia County on the lower side of Snails Creek and North of Great Nottaway River. It appears likely that his mother, Mary Clark, his brother Crispin, and his four youngest brothers, John, Benjamin, James and Daniel went with Ralph(5) to Amelia County. That year John was 23, Benjamin was 21, James was 19 and Daniel was l6.
In 1746 Ralph Shelton(5) and his brother Benjamin signed deeds as witnesses when their brother Crispin sold off part of his 620 acres holdings in Amelia County -- a parcel of 155 acres to Henry Beuford of Amelia County and one of 203 acres to James Beuford of Orange County, Virginia. The Beufords were likely Shelton kin, since it is noted that both Henry and James were witnesses to the will of Ralph's father, Ralph Shelton(4) possibly brothers-in-law of Crispin Shelton who was brother of Ralph(5).
On June 10, 1749 Ralph Shelton(5) had a second land grant — 400 acres in Lunenburg County on the lower side of Ledbetter’s Creek, on October 23, 1751 Ralph Shelton of the Parrish of Nottaway, Amelia County, bought 286 acres more on the lower side of Snales Creek from Samuel Jordon, Snales Creek being a small stream scarcely five miles long in the southeast corner of Prince Edward County, emptying into the Great Nottaway where Prince Edward, Nottaway and Lunenburg Counties meet. This places the 686-acre homestead of Ralph Shelton(5) in the extreme southwest corner of present Nottaway County and his land on Ledbetter Creek about 10 miles distant to the south and west.
On May 10, 1750 the mother of Ralph Shelton{5), Mary Clark, identifying herself as of the "Parish of Nottaway in the County of Amelia" wrote her will. She named, besides her son Ralph Shelton: Grandson Reuben Shelton, sons Crispin, John, Benjamin and James; her daughter, Elizabeth Davis; all with token remembrances. But to her son, Daniel, she gave all the rest of her estate, naming her youngest, now approaching 21, the Executor of the Estate. Included among the behests to Daniel was a Negro wench named Janey.
The Sheltons continued to live on in Amelia County for another 13 years. When some of the Lunenburg lands were processioned in 1760 for sale for taxes Ralph's land was listed, but it was not sold "want of attendance". His residence was still the Amelia land not far away, but even then he may have been venturing farther west.

249.
On February 22, 1763 he sold his Amelia land — 686 acres on the lower aide of Snales Creek — to Richard Burks. John Shelton, likely Ralph's brother, witnessed the deed. Shortly thereafter, Ralph 5) was sued and then he and Richard Burks for debt by Lidell Bacon and Richard Clough, executors of Samuel Jordon. Evidently Ralph's mortgage had not been paid off. Judgment was awarded by the Amelia Court for 52 pounds 7 shillings with interest at five per cent from November 1, 1756.
On July 1, 1763 Ralph Shelton(5) purchased a tract of 400 acres both sides south Fork of Mayo River in Halifax County, Virginia. This land was purchased from one Darby Callahan who lived in Orange County, North Carolina. The property was in the part of Halifax County that in 1791 became Patrick County near the present site of the county seat — Stuart, Virginia. This was 125 miles west of his holdings in Amelia County. Ralph Shelton(5) and at least part of his large family moved to this property in 1763. Before this became Patrick County it was progressively Halifax, Pittsylvania and Henry Counties (see page 8). Pittsylvania County was formed in June 1767. The first tax lists of the new county included the following Sheltons:
Ralph Shelton, Sr. (5)
Eliphaz Shelton
James Shelton
Crispin Shelton
Shenor Shelton (likely Spencer): Negroes Tom, Lucy and Primus
Gabriel Shelton, Abraham Payne, Negroes Zachary and Violet
Lewis Shelton, Negro Pat
Abraham Shelton, Edgecomb J. Williams
William Shelton
The first four named are Ralph(5) and three of his 10 sons. The next five are Ralph's brother Crispin and four of Crispin's eight sons. Although William is not certainly identifiable, he is possibly the son of the James Shelton who in turn was son of one Ralph and Mary pollard Shelton who were said to have resided "on the far side of the Dismal Swamp".
By 1776 the western part of Pittsylvania County had become so well settled that its citizens felt the need of a new county. That year they petitioned for same, the petition reading: "It is extremely inconvenient for us to attend upon any business, civil or military, it being a fact that in Pittsylvania County some 75 and 80 miles from the upper end of the county to the court house and others 45 or 50 miles from the lower end, and many large water courses in the way, and we are frequently called together to the courthouse on account of the unhappy dispute between Great Britain and the colonies (being ready and willing to do all in our power in defense of our just rights and liberties with many grievous burthens too tedious to mention)." So the petitioners numbering several hundred asked for a division on a line due south from Black Water on Staunton River. The result was the creation of Henry County, named for the already famous war Governor, Patrick Henry. Among those who petitioned to bring about the division of the county were these Sheltons:
Ralph Shelton James Shelton Gabriel Shelton
Eliphaz Shelton William Shelton John Shelton
250.
James Shelton Gregory Durham Beverly Shelton
Roger Shelton Daniel Shelton son-in-law of James
James and William Shelton above were sons of one Ralph and Mary Pollard Shelton, and Gregory Durham was a son-in-law.
The tax lists of the year 1779 for Henry County showed Ralph and James Shelton and their sons living on South and North Forks of Mayo River respectively. They were assessed as follows:
Ralph Shelton (5) 23 pounds 1 shil 7 pence
Palatiah Shelton 21 " 10 " 5 "
Eliphaz Shelton 53 " 15 " 11 "
John Shelton 6 " 5
James Shelton 3 " 13 " 8 "

In the early days of Virginia every settler was perforce a soldier, The Indians watched the ever-advancing tide of White settlers and resisted sporadically. The citizenry of each county was organized into militia. Ralph Shelton (5) was in the active military service in Amelia County in 1758. During the Revolution most of the Pittsylvania Shelton’s (Henry Countians) were in active official or military service. James Shelton and his brother Eliphaz were militia Captains in Henry County. John's son Roderick and James' sons James and George were in the Continental Army, Roderick reportedly having served directly under George Washington, James and George having been cavalrymen.
The will of Ralph Shelton (5) was written April 3, 1787. It was rerecorded in Will Book 1, page 171, March 3, 1789. He signed himself as Ralph Shelton (Sr.), recorded in Henry County, Virginia: in the name of God Amen the twenty-third day of April one Thousand Seven Hundred Eighty-Seven I Ralph Shelton, Sr. of Henry County, Virginia, being of perfect mind and memory and recalling that all men are appointed once to die do make and constitute and ordain that this my last will and testament in manner and form following. (Viz) First and principally I recommend my soul Into the hands of Almighty God who gave it to me, and as touching that worldly estate it has pleased him to bestow on me I 'dispose of them as follows: I give and devise to my son John Shelton five pounds sterling current money of Virginia. The intent of ray willing my son John Shelton five pounds sterling is to cut him off from his kinship. And also my will and desire is that my last four children, namely Aesop Shelton, Abigail Shelton, Mary Shelton and Liberty Shelton shall be raised off my estate and the remainder part of my estate, land and movables, to be equally divided between Ralph Shelton, Palatiah Shelton, Eliphaz Shelton, James Shelton, Ezekiah Shelton, Jeremiah Shelton, Azariah Shelton, Roger Shelton, Aesop Shelton, Abigail Shelton, Mary Shelton, Liberty Shelton, Kathern Shelton, Sarah Robertson, Elizabeth Arnold, Rina McGehe, Susannah Jones, they are their heirs. I also appoint my sons Ralph Shelton and Eliphaz Shelton Executors of

this my last will and testament set by hand and affixed my seal the day and year above written. Signed, sealed, published, pronounced and declared to be my last will and testament.
Ralph Shelton, Sr.
John Fletcher, Henry Holt, John Branham
The will was proved on March 30, 1789 at the same place, and the following was written: At a court held in Henry County on the 30th Day of March, 1789 the within last will and testament of Ralph Shelton, deceased was exhibited in court by Eliphaz Shelton, one of the Executors therein named who took oath as Executor. The same was proved by the oaths of the witnesses thereto to be the last will and testament of the said Ralph Shelton deceased and the said Eliphaz Shelton with Stephen Lyon and John Parr, Jr., his sureties, entered into bond and acknowledged the same and was ordered to be recorded by the court, the said Eliphaz Shelton having obtained a probate thereof in due form and agreeable to law. Teste John Cox CHC
It is noted that Ralph Shelton, Sr. had previously deeded to his son James 400 acres of land both sides South Fork Mayo River on March 13, 1784. Then on April 25, 1791 James sold land both sides Mayo River.
The following Shelton’s paid taxes in Henry County, Virginia but were not listed in the census of 1790. They were listed by Fother-gill and Naugee in 1782 and 1787:
Eliphaz Shelton Ralph Shelton, Sr. Roger Shelton
James Shelton Roger Shelton Samuel Shelton
Palatiah Shelton Ralph Shelton, Jr. William Shelton
Ralph and Mary Pollard Shelton, who lived "other side of Dismal Swamp", gave each of their sons Samuel and William above, and also their son-in-law, Gregory Durham, a farm. They lived on Horsepasture and Ironmonger Creeks.
It will be noted that the above list, except for the last two, Samuel and William, are included in the will of Ralph Shelton above. Records of Henry County show that Eliphaz took the oath of allegiance to the colonies and that Jeremiah furnished supplies to the county militia during the war in 1777 James was appointed Captain, serving until 1780, and in March, 1779 Eliphaz was also appointed Captain in the Henry County militia. The history of Patrick County is tied in with that of the Shelton family, that of Eliphaz Shelton particularly.
In March, 1781 Eliphaz marched with his men under Colonel Abraham Penn to the assistance of General Nathaniel Green who was defending Guilford Courthouse down in North Carolina, in the listing on the following pages of those with Colonel Penn and his Adjutant, Major George Waller, many prominent names do not appear, the reason being that they had served their terms of enlistment and had been honorably discharged or were in the Northern Army or in the Artillery as were Roderick's cousins, James and George Shelton.
In August 1780 there was a drive to enlist young men to oppose them at Kings Mountain on the North Carolina-South Carolina border. Roderick Shelton (7) went to a place in nearby East Tennessee near Elizabethton known as Valley Forge
252
and re-enlisted for the campaign and joined up with General Green at King’s Mountain. Roderick was also likely among those who successfully defended against the British at Guilford Court House.
Henry County was formed in 1777 while the Revolutionary War was going on, and many Joined other commands before the first and only body of troops left the county as a unit to Join the warring army under General Green.
Of those who had been in service prior to the departure of this body of troops in March 1781, the following names of some from the county had been collected:
Major Thomas Cooper John Salmons Lewis Franklin
William Deshaze James Shelton Mewsum Pace
George Dyer George King Charles Philpott
Peter France Daniel Burchel John Price
Colonel John Fontaine Thomas Fleuman William Shackleford
James Johnson William Hopper Benjamin Stratton
Dr. Benjamin Jones Moses Spencer Axton Whitecotton

After the Revolution and the Independence won, Captain Eliphaz Shelton on February 28, 1784 received from Benjamin Harrison, then Governor of Virginia, a grant of 590 acres on both sides of Mayo River in Henry County. He applied for a grant selecting two adjoining tracts of 400 acres and 190 acres bordering his father's land astride the South Fork of Mayo River. The official survey of this grant of land was made by John Dicker son, Henry County Surveyor, as of November 25, 1782, duly recorded in Henry County Survey Book No. 1, page 197, on file in clerk's office in Henry County Court House, Martinsville, Virginia. His land was bounded on the south by the 400-acre tract owned by his brother, Captain James Shelton, At a point close by Captain Eliphaz Shelton's western boundary the waters from Bull Mountain Fork joined the South Mayo River as it flowed out of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
With the formation of Patrick County in 1791, a site was needed for the county seat. The first court was held in a tobacco warehouse near Mayo Forge in the eastern part of the county. Later the place for holding court was moved to the home of Edward Tatum on Peters Creek. But the permanent site of the county seat was chosen by the
255
Justices to be the heart of the 590-acre tract of Eliphaz Shelton near the south Fork of Mayo River. Records in the office of Circuit Court Clerk of Patrick County show that Eliphaz Shelton donated 18 acres for the site of the county seat. This was by deed dated October 10, 1791 recorded in Deed Book 1, page 17. Four men — William Banks, Samuel Clark, Charles Poster and William Carter — or any 3 of them, were appointed to lay off the land. A courthouse was built and the land was laid out and named Taylorsville, this for one George Taylor. The town was later called Stuart for J. E. B. Stuart, Confederate General, and was incorporated as such in 1884. That year the Danville and New River Railroad ran its line into the town.
Eliphaz Shelton owned and operated a gristmill on Campbell Branch, which flows through the town, one Samuel Staples as early as 1791 operated a blacksmith shop on land in the county seat donated by Eliphaz Shelton. A meetinghouse in the vicinity is mentioned in a deed from one James Beuford to Eliphaz made in 1793. So the Sheltons particularly Ralph sr., Eliphaz and James, were very instrumental in forming Patrick County. Their adjoining tracks of land in the Taylorsville area were so situated with relation to each other that if a line was drawn from a point on the western boundary of Eliphaz‘s land eastward through the town of Taylorsville, crossing the adjoining tracts of Ralph Shelton, Sr. and James Shelton to the latter’s eastern edge, such a line would be two and one-fourth miles long.
A 1794 record shows that Eliphaz witnessed in Patrick County the wedding of John Chandler and Elizabeth Bennett on December 10, 1794. Another witness was Thomas Boiling, Sr.
Eliphaz Shelton died in August 1826 at his residence near the Patrick County courthouse, is buried on land formerly owned by Ralph Shelton (5), which is in the present town of Stuart, as is Ralph, the old cemetery being on land now owned by the Carter family.
Ralph Shelton (5) was married twice, possibly three times. By first wife, Mary Daniel, whom he wed on June 10, 1731, he is thought to have had the following 14 children:
John Shelton Ezekiah Shelton Sarah Shelton Robertson
Ralph Shelton Jeremiah Shelton Elizabeth Shelton Arnold
Palatiah Shelton Azariah Shelton Rina Shelton McGehee, (Rosa?)
Eliphaz Shelton Roger Shelton Susannah Shelton Jones
James Shelton Kathern Shelton Rutherford
John Shelton(6), son of Ralph(5)and Mary Daniel Shelton, was born in Essex County, Virginia in about 1732. He was likely the eldest of the children of Ralph (5) and Mary. He was named first in the will but was tersely cut off from family and the estate for reasons unknown to this scribe. This is the John Shelton who is said to be the progenitor of Roderick (7) who was the father of James(8) with whose line and whose history this book is primarily concerned. The history of John(6) is found in Chapter V, pages 242 through 248.
Ralph Shelton, son of Ralph(5) and Mary Daniel Shelton, was born in Essex County, Virginia in about 1739. Mormon church records show Ralph Shelton, son of Ralph and Mary Shelton, christened on October 17, 1739 at Christ Church, Middlesex County, Virginia. He owned land in Henry County, which he sold in 1788. He bought land in Grainger County, Tennessee in 1796. Reportedly he moved to Knox County,
256
Tennessee prior to l8ll. A descendant of this Ralph Shelton -- son or grandson — was one Crispin Eli Shelton, born in Virginia in 1788, who died in Rhea County, Tennessee in 1833. Crispin Eli Shelton wed Sarah Williams, born February 22, 1791 and died on February 28, 1863. They had 5 children:
Azariah Shelton, son of Crispin Eli and Sarah Williams Shelton, was born in 1812, reportedly in Grainger County, Tennessee.
Martha Shelton, daughter of Crispin Eli and Sarah Williams Shelton, was born September 26, 1813. She wed Anderson Jones in about 1831. She died July 11, 1841.
Henry Shelton, son of Crispin Eli and Sarah William Shelton, was born in 1816 or thereabouts.
Mirah Shelton, daughter of Crispin Eli and Sarah Williams Shelton, was born about 1819.
Crispin Eli Shelton, Jr., son of Crispin Eli and Sarah Williams Shelton, was born April 8, 1822, in Rhea County, Tennessee. He died August 14, 1898 having wed Nancy Walker on September 3, 1846. Who died September 11,1892. They moved to Hamilton County, Tennessee in 1849 where they lived at Robbins Roost. They reportedly had 10 children. The record of the children of Crispin Eli Shelton, Jr. and Nancy Walker Shelton is rather complete. Crispin Eli, Jr. was likely the youngest of Crispin Eli Sr.'s children. Their 10 children:
Matilda Shelton, daughter of Crispin Eli Jr. and Nancy Walker Shelton, was born November 10, 1847. She wed Samuel Daily Julian on October 9, 1867. He died April 17, l88l. They had 4 children:
John Julian, son of Samuel Daily and Matilda Shelton Julian, was born about 1868.
Emma Julian, daughter of Samuel Daily and Matilda Shelton Julian was born about 1870. She wed W. 0. Haggard of Cleveland, Tennessee, and had 6 children: Ruth Haggard, who wed Winifred Dorsey, lived in Miami; Edwina Haggard, who wed Herbert Gilman, Zena Haggard, who wed Nathan Kelly; Willie Mae Haggard; W. 0. Haggard, Jr., who wed Louise Hudson; and Lester Haggard.
Ella Julian, twin to Emma, daughter of Samuel Daily and Matilda Shelton Julian, was born about 1870. She wed Dr. D. A. Sullivan of Calhoun, Tennessee and had 6 children: D. A. Sullivan Jr., Edith, Dorothy, Mary Ella, Wendell, and Dr. S. J. Sullivan.
Lula Julian, daughter of Samuel Daily and Matilda Shelton Julian, was born about 1872. She wed David Snyder. Had no children.
Azariah Shelton, son of Crispin Eli, Jr. and Nancy Walker Shelton, was born in Hamilton County, Tennessee on January 24, 1850. He wed Harriet Carper on August 27, 1868. He died

Jesse Ida Shelton, daughter of Azariah and Harriet Carper Shelton, was born about l872. She wed J. E. Ramsey of Birmingham on October 10, 1893. They had: Fred L. Ramsey; Mary Lois Ramsey who wed H. E. Wright; and Ida Mildred Ramsey who wed Harvey Martin.
Alto Foster Shelton, daughter of Azariah and Harriet carper Shelton, was born about l874. She wed Tilman F. Chamlee. They had: Grace Chamlee, who wed Albert Owen Kreigsman of Eustis, Florida and The Reverend Tilman Chamlee. Alta Foster died October 10, 1930.
Cora Angeline Shelton daughter of Azariah and Harriet Carper Shelton, was born about l876, she wed first George Worsham. They had Harry Worsham who wed Lucille Brown. Cora then wed John Collins, and they lived in Atlanta. They had John W. (Jack) Collins; Elizabeth Collins, who wed Earl Grubbs; Tilman Collins; and Nancy Collins, who wed Nesbett Spence,
John Carper Shelton, son of Azariah and Harriet Carper Shelton, was born about 1877 in Chattanooga. He became Assistant postmaster, wed Bertha Calvert. They moved to Florida and he became a banker and businessman in St. Petersburg. They had son Calvert P. Shelton. John C. died at age 64. He had 3 sisters: Mrs. E, M. Shelton of Chattanooga; Mrs. J. E. Ramsey of Birmingham; and Mrs. John W. Collins of Atlanta.
William Shelton, son of Crispin Eli, Jr. and Nancy Walker Shelton, was born May 25, 1852. He wed Amanda Moore on December 2, 1874. He was a well-known citizen of Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee, having been member of county court for 8 years, deputy Register for 4 years, appraiser for Cogwell and Smith, and was a teacher in county schools for several years. He died January 22, 1919 at age 66, is buried in Silverdale, a suburb of Chattanooga. Sarah Little, daughter of N. A. and Jennie Shelton Little, was born about 1892.
Paul Little, son of N. A. and Jennie Shelton Little, was born about 1894.
For possible other descendants of Ralph Shelton, son of Ralph (5), reference is made to a letter from Andrew B. Van Hooser of October 2, 1982. He states that he descended from one Cuthbert Shelton, born about 1770 probably in Henry County, Virginia, who died in Muhlenburg, Kentucky in about 1834.
260
Cuthbert was married before 1788 in Henry County to Sarah Leak Terry, daughter of James and Eliza Leak Terry. Van Hooser wrote that James Terry died in 1788 and that his wife Eliza and son-in-law Cuthbert Shelton were the executors of his estate, that Ralph Shelton was a witness. He wrote that James Terry had bought land from this Ralph Shelton and that Ralph had sold other holdings to the widow Eliz in 1788 and moved to Knox County, Tennessee by way of Grainger County, Tennessee, having sold land here to Cuthbert Shelton in July, 1798. Van Hooser suggests the likelihood of this Cuthbert being the son of Ralph, the Ralph Shelton born in Virginia about 1735 who died about 1798. He wrote further that Hall Shelton, born in Grainger County, Tennessee in about 1789 was the son of Cuthbert. Hall Shelton married Elizabeth Mabry on June 15, 1811 in Knox County, Tennessee. He died on August 31,1860 in Nashville, Washington County, Illinois. The Cuthbert Shelton in the 1850 census of Bradley County, Tennessee, shows his wife Margaret at age 35 and 8 children from age 15 down to 1 month. (See page 128.) Mr. Van Hooser gives the date of this Cuthbert's birth as March 1, 1813, and that of his death as about 1880. He married Margaret Bessie Messimer, born August 10, 18l5, on August 31,l834, she having died October 21, 1883. They reportedly had a total of 13 children. Mr. Van Hooser was not certain of the name of Cuthbert's father. Cuthbert’s granddaughter, one Laura Claudine, has a family Bible, which lists the names of the 13 children.
Palatiah Shelton, son of Ralph (5) and Mary Daniel Shelton, was born in Essex County, Virginia about 1733. He deeded land to Samuel Crawley and Richard White in Pittsylvania County on November 29, 1770, and he is shown later in Jefferson County, Tennessee. On January 24,1795 he deeded 245 acres of land there to one John Lee. Other Shelton’s in Jefferson County are shown pages 325 & 380 of this book, Palatiah is said to have been on record in Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1795, Grainger County in 1796 and Knox County in 1823. He reportedly married twice, first, Mary; second, Ann. There is no record at hand of descendants or Palatiah. He is listed in early tax records of Henry County, Virginia.
Eliphaz Shelton, son of Ralph (5) and Mary Daniel Shelton, was born in Essex County, Virginia about 1734. His record and history coincide with the early days of Patrick County. His life in the military and as a private citizen is covered earlier in this chapter, pages 250 to 256. Evidently he was a favored son of Ralph (5), having been named an Executor of his will. He is listed as taxpayer in early records of Henry County. There is no record at hand of a marriage or descendants except for one notation, in a record in Patrick County on January l9, 1809 of the marriage of Olive Shelton to Samuel Nolen, Eliphaz was listed as father and Frederick was shown as a witness. Eliphaz is on record also as witnessing the marriage of John Chandler to Elizabeth Bennett on December 10, 1794, another witness being Thomas Boiling, Sr.; and on April 12, 1796 Eliphaz Shelton witnessed the marriage of Isaac Going to Nancy Lizby, with her mother, Mary Lizby, and one Henry Lizby and a William Moore also as witnesses.
James Shelton, son of Ralph (5) and Mary Daniel Shelton, was born in Essex County, Virginia in 1734. He and his family moved with his father's family to Halifax County in southwest Virginia in 1763, the area that in 1767 became Pittsylvania
261
County, in 1777 became Henry County and in 1791 became Patrick County, 1777, the year the county was formed, James Shelton was appointed Captain in the Henry County Militia. He served until 1780, at which time he resigned his commission. His son George and nephew James served in the Revolution, both of whom were cavalrymen. James (1734) owned 400 acres of land, which laid both sides South Fork, Mayo River, this land having been deeded to him by his father, Ralph Shelton (5), on March 13, 1784. The record shows that James sold this land on April 25, 1791. Traditionally, the head of the James Shelton family of Buncombe County, North Carolina had 13 sons. Mrs. Catherine Shelton Moser, born 1854, stated in 1940: “James Shelton, brother of Ralph who married Mary Crispin was married to Jincie (last name unknown), may have been my ancestor. He was born Middlesex County, Virginia in 1726. (Note: The Ralph Shelton who married Mary Crispin was Ralph (4), born 1685, father of this James and Ralph(5), the latter who married Mary Daniel), James and Jincie had sons; Thomas, James, Joseph, Mark, Anderson, Frederick, Jarrett or Garrett, Porter, George, William and David, the 13th not remembered, something like Rawleigh. David was founder of the 'Shelton Laurel Branch' of the family in the North Carolina Mountains...."
This writer believes that Mrs. Moser has her data confused. My research shows that the James Shelton she names as being born in 1726 was a son of Ralph (4) born l685, and Mary Crispin Shelton, an uncle of the James born 1734. The James Shelton born 1726, in his will dated May 14, 1784, named wife Philiaplnea and 5 children — Nathan, James, Molly, Nancy and Sally. Mormon church records show this Nancy and Sally as being in the will of James Shelton 14, 1784, likely two of the daughters above. There is evidence that this James had wed previously, that wife supposedly named Jane (or Jincie). I have no certain record of children by her, it appears to me that the 13 sons of James Shelton listed by Mrs. Moser above included sons of the James born 1734, some of his brother John (6) born about 1732 and other cousins somewhat removed, of those named by Mrs. Moser, two were unquestionably sons of the James born 1734. He had married Susannah Shelton in about 1751.
David Shelton, son of James and Susannah Shelton, was born in Virginia about 1752. This is likely the David Shelton who came to Laurel Valley in Buncombe County, North Carolina with Roderick (7), the one who on December 10, 1801 granted to Roderick 100 acres on the left hand fork of Bald Mountain Creek, the deed being the so called "Cain River Deed".
George Shelton, son of James and Susannah Shelton, was born in Virginia in about 1756. He was a cavalryman in the Revolution.
Other likely sons of the James born 1734 and Susannah Shelton were Joseph, Mark and Anderson Shelton,
262.
Among the children of John (6) and Susanna Hoard Shelton included in Mrs. Moser's listing were likely these three;
James Shelton, son of John (6) and Susan Hoard Shelton, was born about
1754.
William Shelton, son of John (6) and Susan Hoard Shelton, was born about 1757.
Thomas Shelton, son of John (6) and Susan Hoard Shelton, was born in Amelia County, Virginia about 1755.
Frederick Shelton in Mrs. Moser's listing was born about 1765, was the son of Abraham, grandson of Crispin.
Raleigh Shelton in Mrs. Moser's listing was born about 1803. He was a son of James and Nancy Clark Shelton.
Joseph Shelton, in Mrs. Moser's listing, is not certainly identified. He is likely the son of James and Susannah Shelton, born about 1758. There was a Colonel Joseph Shelton, born 1758, who lived in Louisa County, Virginia, which is near Amelia County where James and Susannah resided prior to moving to Halifax County. This Colonel Joseph, however, is said to have been "son of David of Old Town". This Joseph Shelton or possibly a son thereof also named Joseph, reportedly wed Minerva Scruggs. Their daughter, Catherine Scruggs Shelton, married William Moser (Messier), she being the Catherine Shelton Moser above, born 1854, which named the 13 whom she alleged were the son’s of James (born 1726) and Jincie.
This Joseph Shelton is said to have had a son John Shelton of Scott County, Tennessee, who wed Catherine Moser, and a daughter Catherine Shelton who wed William Moser — brother and sister married sister and brother. John is said to have moved to northern Alabama where in his later years while in ill health, his son David stayed with him for 6 years until the father's death, David then returning to Scott County, Tennessee. There are other instances to indicate Shelton-Moser connection, in 1878 a Mrs. Betty Johnson Moser, born about 1857, and Mr. Moser, the latter a schoolmaster, friends of my father, Sam Shelton, boarded in the home of Sam's father, James Shelton (8), in McMinn County, Tennessee. The James Shelton domicile down on the Hiawassee River was apparently a "way station" between the Alabama Sheltons and the upper East Tennesseeans. A further note in this regard is that one Eli Shelton wed Mabaley Moser in Claiborne County, Tennessee in 1847.
Mark Shelton in Mrs. Moser's listing was likely a son of John and Elizabeth Shelton. He was shown in the census of Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1785. In a deed dated November 16, 1779 Mark and his wife conveyed land to one William Hardy. Mark was said to have been a planter His will of June 21, 1802 in Pittsylvania County listed 10 children:
Richard Shelton, son of Mark, was born about 1760.
Henry Shelton, son of Mark, was born about 1761.
Spencer Shelton, son of Mark, was born about 1763.
263
John Shelton, son of Mark, was born about 1764.
George Shelton, son of Mark, was born about 1766.
William Shelton, son of Mark, was born about 1768.
Charles Shelton, son of Mark, was born about 1772.
Nancy Davidson, daughter of Mark Shelton, was born about 1762.
Rachael David, daughter of Mark Shelton, was born about 1765.
Franky Wright, daughter of Mark Shelton, was born about 1770.
Anderson Shelton, possibly a son of James and Susannah Shelton, was born about 1765. He is not surely identified in the records at hand. The name is found frequently among the Ralph Shelton progeny. Among them is a son of Roderick's son William, born 1829. Another is a son of Azariah’ s son Ralph, born about 1834. Also a son of George Shelton' s son Solomon Shelton was named William Anderson Shelton. There are more Andrew Sheltons, though. There are at least five listed in this book born between 18l6 and 1828, all except one of whom had Jackson as a middle name, the other being Andrew Hooper Shelton, son of James(8)and Sarah Hooper Shelton, the others presumably named for the noted warrior statesman.
Frederick Shelton, born about 1775, was the son of Crispin's son Abraham. There are many records that name Frederick in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He wed Polly, born in 1795.
On July 10, 1789 Frederick Shelton was mentioned in the will of his father, Abraham Shelton.
On May 3, 1791 Frederick Shelton witnessed with James Johnson in the wedding of William Shelton to Elizabeth Chaney Johnson Shelton.
On January l6, 1792 Frederick Shelton witnessed the wedding of William Nelson to Elizabeth Taylor.
On March 3, 1782 Frederick Shelton was grantor to justices of Pittsylvania County.
On November 19, 1792 Frederick Shelton witnessed with John Waller the wedding of Richard Keats to Elizabeth Waller.
On December 17,1792 Frederick Shelton witnessed with John Shelton the wedding of, Griggery Shelton to Elizabeth Beuford.
On February 18, 1793 Frederick Shelton was grantor to James George.
On August 19, 1793 Frederick Shelton and Crispin Shelton, Jr. were grantors to J. Ambler.
On October l6, 1795 Frederick Shelton wed Polly Shelton, witnessed by Armistead Shelton, marriage performed by Thomas Payne.
On June 18, 1798 Frederick Shelton was grantor to Joseph E. Haley.
On December 17, 1792 Frederick Shelton witnessed with John Shelton the wedding of Abraham Shelton to Lettice Shelton.
On August 20, 1798 Frederick Shelton and wife Polly granted re-linquishment of dower,
On April 20, 1789 Frederick was grantor of land to Harmon Cook.
264
On February 20, 1804. Frederick Shelton was mentioned in the will of his mother, Chloe Robertson Shelton.
On October 20, 1811 Frederick Shelton witnessed the marriage of George Fulcher to Elizabeth Robertson.
On October l6, 1820 Frederick Shelton's will was proved. He named first wife Polley, second his three children: Robertson, Patsy Lewis and Chloe Robertson Shelton, third other kindred: Steven and Letty Shelton, Martin M., Christopher, Meacon, Tunstall, Thompson, Wickham D., Wesley and Jane Shelton.
On February 6, 1809 Frederick Shelton married Winney Jones in Patrick County, Virginia, witnessed by Robert Sharp, he evidently having divorced Polley, she also having remarried, she to William Hall on February 1, 1810, also in Patrick County, witnessed by William N. Sharp and Hudson Hall, married by Peter Franz. Yet she is named in Frederick's will proved Oct. l6, l820.
The following were Frederick's legatees:
Polley Shelton, his wife, dau of Daniel & Letitia, b. abt. 1775. Robertson Shelton, son of Frederick and Polley, was born about
1794.
Patsy Lewis Shelton, daughter of Frederick and Polley, was born about 1796.
Chloe Robertson Shelton, supposedly a daughter of Frederick and Polley, was born about 1798.
Stephen Shelton, son of Armistead and Susannah born about 1775.
Letty Shelton (Mrs. Stephen, daughter of Gabriel), was born
about 1778.
Martin M. Shelton, son of Stephen and Letty, was born about 1799. Christopher Shelton, son of Stephen and Letty, was born about 1801. Meacon Shelton, son of Stephen and Letty, was born about l803. Tunstall Shelton, son of Stephen and Letty, was born about 1805. Thompson Shelton, son of Stephen and Letty, was born about 1807. Wickham D. Shelton, son of Stephen and Letty, was born about 1809.
Wesley Shelton, son of Stephen and Letty, was born about 1811.
Jane Shelton, daughter of Stephen and Lettice Shelton was born
about 1812.
Porter Shelton is presumed to be the son of Patsie Shelton. He was born about 1770 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. His mother, Patsie, was born about 1752 in Middlesex County, Virginia, the daughter of Josiah, born about 1733, and Elizabeth Shelton. They had 8 or 9 other children. (Chapter VII on Thomas Shelton.) Elizabeth's last name was possibly Porter. Josiah's father was Thomas Shelton, born Middlesex County, Virginia in 1707, and his wife, Mary Probert Shelton. Thomas was the son of Ralph (4) and Mary Crispin Shelton. Josiah Shelton went to Lunenburg County, left a will in Halifax County in 1797, the area, which earlier had been a portion of Lunenburg County; Porter had a brother William born about 1765. There was a William Porter in Pittsylvania who
265.
presumably was their uncle. There is a deed record in Henry County, Virginia in which Porter Shelton is named. It was noted that his mother Patsie and his brother William were both charged with dividing the mother's land. Grover Shelton noted further that there was a record in Rutherford County, North Carolina nearby.
No Jarrett (or Garrett) Shelton appears in the records at hand except with the descendants of John(6). Thomas Shelton, son of John (6), had a grandson named Jarrett, he being the son of Thomas son James, born l8l5, and Nancy Clark Shelton.
George Shelton, son of James and Susannah Shelton, was born in Virginia about 1756. He lived at Biltmore in Buncombe County, North Carolina and owned a farm there. He had earlier lived for a time in Rutherford County, North Carolina, he being shown there with a family in the census of 1790. At Biltmore his farm was on the Swannanoa River. He and his cousin James Shelton were cavalrymen in the Revolutionary war in Dixon's company of North Carolina troops from May l78l to May 1782. George wed _ and had the following 6 children:
Solomon Shelton, born March 31, 1790. William Shelton, born about l791
Isaac Shelton, born about 1793.
Stephen Shelton, born about 1794
Elijah Shelton, born about 1796.
Melina Shelton, born about 1798.
Solomon Shelton, son of George, born in 1790, volunteered for service in the war of 1812 and was on his way to New Orleans but did not arrive until after the great battle there. He married Christina McGuin in about 1815. The couple had 10 children;
Mary P. Shelton, daughter of Solomon and Christina Shelton, was born August 2, l8l6. She married a Barham.
Sarah Shelton, daughter of Solomon and Christina Mc Shelton, was born September 1, l8l8, she wed a Wilmeth.
William Anderson Shelton, son of Solomon and Christina McGuin Shelton, was born October 20, 1820. He wed a Walker.
Cynthis Tevina Shelton, daughter of Solomon and Christina McGuin Shelton, was born May 26, 1823. She wed a McCuller.
James Alexander McGuin Shelton, son of Solomon and Christina McGuin Shelton, was born November 6, l825. He wed a Miss Kirk.
Falby Maria Shelton, daughter of Solomon and Christina McGuin Shelton, was born January 3, 1828. She wed a Wilmeth.
John Shelton, son of Solomon and Christina McGuin Shelton, was born October 15, 1830. He married a Miss Brantley.
Christina McGuin Shelton, daughter of Solomon and Christina McGuin Shelton, was born November 2, 1832. She married a Churchill.
266.
Michael E. Shelton, son of Solomon and Christina McGuin Shelton, was born on September 7, 1835. He married Sarah Ann Schull.
Daniel C. Shelton, son of Solomon and Christina McGuin Shelton, was born in 1837. He married a Miss Aston.
At hand are the children of Michael E. and Sarah Ann Schull Shelton:
Lucy Shelton, born about l856, wed John Deming.
Mary Shelton, born about l859, died single.
James Alexander Shelton, born about 1863, wed Lula Cox.
Nora Ellenton Shelton, born about 1866, wed twice,
first to a Davis, then to a Moriarty. Thomas Albert Shelton, born about 1870, died single.
Peter Schull Shelton, born about1874, wed Birdie Hurley.
Nicie Ann Shelton, born April 11, 1878, married Taylor
Emory Smith.
Melissa Adelaide Shelton, born about i860, died single
in November 1945.
William Taylor Shelton, born about 1883, wed Cleopatra Deming.
George Shelton, son of James and Susannah Shelton, appeared in Records of Buncombe County, North Carolina in 1798 and 1803 in deeds of land. (See pp 5 and 6 this book.)
David Shelton, son of James and Susannah Shelton, was born in Virginia about 1755, was named in deed records in Buncombe County, North Carolina in 1801, one of his deeds naming his cousin Roderick Shelton (7) as his assignee. (See page 5.) A Pittsylvania County, Virginia record shows the wedding on May 30, 1775 of David Shelton to Elizabeth Shields, witnesses to the ceremony being John Shelton, father of the bride and one Moses Vincent. This John Shelton was likely John, Jr., born about 1746, grandson of Ralph(4). Another Pittsylvania County record, one of January l5, 1791 shows David and Elizabeth as grantors of land in a deed to Henry Shackleford. It may have been about this time that David moved to Buncombe County, North Carolina. The census of l800 for Buncombe County does hot list a David Shelton, but the census was likely not completed until about 1802, and it is supposed that David died or left the country about the latter part of 1801 after deeding property to Roderick (7). There is an Elizabeth Shelton listed in the census of 1800 as the head of a family in Buncombe County, and it is likely that she is David's widow. This census, found page 7 of this book, lists the following in her household: Males, 1 16-26; females, 1 16-26, 1 45 up.
David Shelton, born about 1735 son of James and Susannah, wife Elizabeth are said to have settled on Laurel. He signed Roderick's Cain River deed and went on to Laurel. Roderick sold the Cain River land to William Moore. David had a son William Shelton born about 1776. He is said also to have had a son Roderick, born 1798. This Roderick married Rachael Moore, born l804, in Washington County, Tennessee, on August 6, 1820. Rachael was born in South Carolina, the daughter of William Moore above.
267.
William Moore was born in New Jersey In 1767, moved to South Carolina and raised a family there before moving to Buncombe County, North Carolina. His wife evidently died before 1840. Roderick and Rachael lived at Spilcorn, North Carolina for most of their lives. They were on Clear Branch of Flag pond, Tennessee in i860. They had 9 children:
David Shelton, son of Roderick Shelton, was born about 1815. He died in the Shelton Massacre in 1863. He married Verlin Nancy Hensley, born l8l6, in about 1833, daughter of Halen and Mary Howard Hensley. They were the grandparents of the Reverend Melvin Shelton, born about 1910, who lived in upper East Tennessee. David and Verlin Hensley Shelton had 12 children:
Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of David and Verlin Hensley Shelton, was born in 1834. She married Jacob Shelton, son of Liphus Shelton.
Samuel Shelton, son of David and Verlin Hensley Shelton, was born in 1836 in North Carolina.
Essau Shelton, son of David and Verlin Hensley Shelton, was born in 1837. He married Sarah Jane Shelton, daughter of Armstrong’s son and daughter-in-law, Rod and Eliza Chandley Shelton, sister to Cling.
Nancy (Necy) Shelton, daughter of David and Verlin Hensley Shelton, was born in 1840. She married twice, first to Halen Moore, then to Liphus Shelton, son of David's son William.
William H. Shelton, son of David and Verlin Hensley Shelton, was born in 1846. He married Margaret Phillips, born 1844, had son Melvin Shelton, who was a minister.
Caroline Shelton, daughter of David and Verlin Hensley Shelton, was born in North Carolina in 1848.
Martha Shelton, daughter of David and Verlin Hensley Shelton, was born in l850, twin of Mary Shelton.
Mary Shelton, daughter of David and Verlin Hensley Shelton, was born in 1850, twin of Martha Shelton.
Armstrong Shelton, son of David and Verlin Hensley Shelton, was born in 1852 in Tennessee.
George W. Shelton, son of David and Verlin Hensley Shelton, was born in l853 in Tennessee.
Selva Shelton, daughter of David and Verlin Hensley Shelton, was born March 1, 1854.
Andrew Jackson Shelton, son of David and Verlin Hensley Shelton, was born in 1855 in Tennessee.
Nancy Shelton, daughter of Roderick and Rachael Moore Shelton, was born in 1820,
268.
was married twice. He first husband was Drury Norton, born l815, reportedly a spy for the Rebel forces in the Civil War. She had 6 children by him. Her second husband was Son Franklin, born 1833 by which she had no children, she apparently having wed him late in life. Her sons sympathized with the South in the war and though not enlisted lent support to the Confederate cause, firing on Union troops as the opportunity was afforded. A Colonel Kirk with a detachment of Union soldiers decided to make an example of the Norton family. This adventure of war and a sequel to it are related in detail on page l6l of this book. Nancy Shelton Norton Franklin, who wed Drury Norton in about 1841 and had 6 children, and after he died in about 1862 wed Son Franklin, was in 1880 at 60, living with her mother, Rachael Moore Shelton. Her children:
Robert Balus Norton, son of Drue and Nancy Shelton Norton, was born near Shelton Laurel, North Carolina in l843. He was killed on September 27, 1864 by the Union raiders.
James Norton, son of Drue and Nancy Shelton Norton, was born near Shelton Laurel, North Carolina in 1845. He too was killed by Kirk's raiders on September 27 1864.
Josiah Norton, son of Drue and Nancy Shelton Norton, was born in l849, near Shelton Laurel, North Carolina. He was killed at age 15 on September 27, 1864, by Colonel Kirk's raiders.
George W. Norton, son of Drue and Nancy Shelton Norton, was born in 1847 near Shelton Laurel, North Carolina. He was away from home on September 27, 1864 and consequently was the only son of Drue and Nancy Shelton Norton that was not slain in the raid by the Union forces. He married Nancy Shelton, daughter of Martin, Jr. and Mary (Polly) Franklin Shelton.
Delaney Norton, daughter of Drue and Nancy Shelton Norton, was born in 1849 near Shelton Laurel, North Carolina. She died on December 24, 1933, having wed Mitchell Franklin, born 1848, on May 10, 1869, son of G. W. (Rock) Franklin.
Elizabeth Catherine Norton, daughter of Drue and Nancy Shelton Norton, was born about l85l near Shelton Laurel, North Carolina. She wed Jimerson Hensley.
James Shelton, son of Roderick and Rachael Moore Shelton, was born in 1822. He was married three times, first to Agnes Gosnell, second to Mary Lewis and third to Polly Willis. There is a record on a James Shelton in the census of 1850 in Polk County, Tennessee, a widower born 1822 as the head of a family of 5 consisting of besides himself three children and an elderly woman Mary Rush, age 89. The census shows that he and all three children were born in Tennessee, Mary in Virginia. The three children were:
Denfred Shelton, son of James born 1845.
Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of James, born 1846.
Sarah Shelton, daughter of James, born 1848.
269.
The above children are possibly those of James Shelton, son of Roderick and Rachael. However, a chart prepared by Grover Shelton indicates that James had children other than these. The preceding paragraphs name the “sons" whom Catherine Moser listed as those of James Shelton, born 1726 and his wife Jincie. Of the 13 she named five are likely sons of James, born 1734, and his wife Susannah — David, b.abt. 1752; George, born about 1756; Joseph, born about 1758; Mark, born about 1761; and Anderson, born about 1765.
Records in Patrick County, Virginia show James, born 1734, son of Ralph (5) and Mary Daniel Shelton, and wife Susannah residing there in 1794. An earlier record shows that James sold land April 25,1791 both sides Mayo River in Patrick County, this land of 400 acres had been deeded to James by his father, Ralph (5) on March 13,1784. It might be well to note again that Patrick County was formed from Henry County in 1791. Records show that there was a third James Shelton in the area of Henry-Patrick County besides the James born l734 and the one born 1726.
Ezekiah Shelton (Grover and Z. F. Shelton both show him as Hezekiah), son of Ralph (5) and Mary Daniel Shelton, was born in Essex County, Virginia about 1736. He is shown in deed record of Henry County, Virginia in 1791 and in Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1814. There is no certain record at hand of descendants; on April 13, 1791 he witnessed the marriage of Benjamin Going to Elizabeth Stevens in Patrick County, Virginia. The father of the bride was shown as Solomon Stevens, other witnesses were Rachael and Holden McGee. On page 276 of this book is given the lineage of one Ezekiel Shelton, nephew of this Ezekiah (Hezekiah) Shelton, son of Azariah Shelton. Ezekiel, son of Azariah and Sarah Holt Shelton, married Margaret Love at Dayton, Tennessee on April 17, 1828.
Jeremiah Shelton, son of Ralph (5)and Mary Daniel Shelton, was born in Essex County, Virginia about 1740.He is on record as having bought land in Essex County, Virginia on September 1, 1781, which he sold on July 1, 1784. He wed Nancy about 1765. They owned land in Russell County, Virginia, which was sold in 1797. They then likely moved to Kentucky. Jeremiah and Nancy had among other children a son named Asher Shelton, born in Virginia in 1774. Asher moved to Todd County, Kentucky in about 1800 and married Mary Greene who had been born in Todd County in 1784. The names of the other children of Jeremiah and Nancy are not at hand. Their son Asher and wife Mary reportedly had 8 children:
Bunyan Shelton (likely John Bunyan), son of Asher and Mary Greene Shelton, born about 1801, was likely the John B. Shelton, 273.
born 1800, of Todd County, Kentucky. He wed Amy Dunlap, born 1810, in about 1830 in Todd County. They had several children born in Todd County and some time after 1846, they moved to Scott County, Missouri. The census of 1860 for Scott County shows 3 children still in the household of John B. and Amy:
Sarah J. Shelton, daughter of John B. and Amy Dunlap Shelton, was born in 1840 in Kentucky,
Elias Shelton, son of John B. and Amy Dunlap Shelton, was born in
1843 was reportedly a soldier in the confederate Army. A likely son
of this Elias Shelton was one Elias M. Shelton, born about 1868,
who wed Mary Ellen Shelton, born 1870, daughter of Azariah and Harriet Carper Shelton. They had Chester O., John Wendell and Harriet Louise Shelton who
wed C.E. Jordon. Elias was ancestor Ted Shelton of MO.

Ralph Shelton(5), following the death of his beloved Mary, wed the second time in about 1777. The name of this wife is not at hand. She is not named in the will which was proved in 1789. he made no distinction. There were 4 children by his second wife:

Patrick County records in the office of County Court Clerk for 1791 show the following Sheltons:
Eliphaz Shelton Azariah Shelton Susannah Shelton
Palatiah Shelton Ezekiah Shelton Samuel Shelton
Ralph Shelton James Shelton
These Sheltons, except for the last two listed, are evidently sons of Ralph Shelton(5). Samuel Shelton is son of James who was son of the Ralph across Dragon Swamp, it is not unlikely that Susannah is the widow of Ralph(5), the head of the family now with 4 small children, or she may have been the daughter named on the preceding page, having the responsibility for the 4 young siblings.
Following are some miscellaneous records and other items of interest from Patrick County, Virginia noted by this writer in July, 1969.
Commerative plaque on J. E. B. Stuart Highway (U.S.58) at east entrance to Patrick County: "Patrick County, area 485 square miles. Formed in 1790 from Henry County and named for Patrick Henry, who thus had two counties named for him. General J. E. B. Stuart was born in this county." On the opposite side of the same plaque — west entrance to Henry County — is the following: "Henry County, area 485 square miles. Formed in 1776 from Pittsylvania County and named for Patrick Henry. Court was held June 13, 1791. Now we find in Deed Book 1, page 347 that on July 11, 1791 Captain Eliphas Shelton, who owned 590 acres on South Mayo River, signed a penalty bond agreement in which he offered to donate 20 acres to the Patrick County Court, sufficient for the new court house and jail, and providing 14 1-acre lots for the county seat town. The deed was signed October 19, 1791. On October 10, 1966, being the 175th anniversary of the founding of the county seat, was the first time the generous gift of the Revolutionary War here, namely Captain Eliphaz Shelton, had been sufficiently recognized. (Here the article refers to Journal of the Roanoke Historical Society, Summer 1965, Volume 2, Number 1, pages 15-19, a treatise by one James H. Martin, Esq., entitled 'Founding of Patrick County’ for copy, the address is given as Box 1904, Roanoke, Virginia.)"
Quoting further from The Enterprise "... Ralph Shelton, father of Captain Eliphaz Shelton, the forgotten hero of our tale, bought 4OO acres of land July 21, 1763 astride south Mayo River and settled there with his family. A few years later, May 6, 1771, Ralph Shelton purchased an additional 400 acres adjoining his former purchase..... then following his active service in the Revolutionary war, Captain Eliphaz Shelton applied for a grant of land, selecting two adjoining tracts of 400 and 190 acres, bordering his father’s land on both sides of South Mayo River in Henry, (now Patrick) County. ‘The official survey of this grant of land was made by John Dickenson, Henry County surveyor, Book 1, page 197, on file in clerk's office, as of November 25, 1782, Martinsville, Virginia. Following this survey Governor Benjamin Harrison on February 28, 1784 issued a grant of 590 acres of land to Eliphaz Shelton as surveyed in what was then Henry County.'"

Correspondence with Colonel Lee M. Shelton since the spring of 1982 has contributed broadly to the history of the clan. He is a descendant of David Shelton, son of Roderick(7), the David who is credited with being the founder of Shelton Laurel. It is supposed that Roderick(7) is son of John(6), grandson of Ralph(5).
Following is quoted from an early letter from Colonel Lee Shelton:
"...I agree fully that he (Roderick-7) sprang from the Ralph Shelton line. As to the specifics, I wish we had something more on which to hang our hat. The James 1734 which you postulate is altogether logical and supported somewhat by Mrs. Catherine Shelton Moser, but I must admit that her listing of children does not agree in some respects with family legend, some of the people with whom I have worked over the years have tried to locate data on John Shelton 1732 (cut off in his fathers will) with the thought that he could be the father of Roderick. For some time it has been my thought that James of 1726 (son of Ralph l685) was the father but have gotten that out of my system... It has long confused me that the name Roderick appears so suddenly in a family whose naming patterns were so predictable. Likewise once the name appeared it perpetuated. I am convinced that those marriage bonds of Pittsylvania County that speak of Roddick, Reddick, and Roderick are cousin or uncle/nephew relationships. Another thought — the name Roderick appears as a middle name among the Sheltons of Shelton, Connecticut. As a matter of fact, I visited William Roderick Shelton, Sr. in Connecticut as recently as 1978 (since deceased). He is a descendant of Daniel. Naturally this experience causes me to wonder whether Roderick might have been a family middle name for our Virginia people and Roderick suddenly “adopted” it as a first
284.
name to avoid the confusion of all the Williams, James, and Johns etc. in the family.
In August 1984, Mrs. Shelton and I made a trip to Shelton Laurel
and visited among other places the home of Rena and Paul Shelton.
A report on this visit and her lineage are shown page 188. At the
cemetery on a hill overlooking her home was the grave of Judith
Shelton, great grandmother of Colonel Lee Shelton. The Colonel's
uncles she said had visited her and viewed the cemetery several
years previously. There were other Sheltons there. Judith's marker
noted that she was born in 1833, had died in 1910. Rena showed us
a portrait of a family headed by an elderly lady whom she said was
Judy Shelton. The other members of the group were, as I remember,
a daughter and her family and a young lad not of her immediate
family. In reporting on this trip to Colonel Lee Shelton his reply
in part was as follows:
"...Am anxious to obtain a copy of the picture you mention. I think that family group includes Aunt Martha Jane Shelton Haynie, Uncle Solomon Shelton and one of his sons. The date on Grandmother Judy's headstone baffles me. My data says July 2, 1831 as birth date, not 1833. Two of my uncles visited that area — one in the early 50 's, the other in the early 60’s and Rena probably thinks of one of them as my father. Unfortunately my Dad never had the opportunity to visit the home area of his forebears. Yolande and I were in the vicinity in 1977 and visited the home of Charles and Lena Shelton..."
