CHAPTER VII, RALPH SHELTON (4)

Ralph Shelton (4) is said to have been born in Middlesex County Virginia in 1685, the son of Peter and Susannah Jackson Shelton, Mr. Kenyon Stevenson, great (5 times) grandson of Ralph (4), endeavored to controvert this in writing that there is no indication in the records of the parentage of Ralph (4). Nor is there, he wrote, of the date of his importation or place from whence he came. But one Thomas Meriwether, who appears on record in Essex County as early as the 1690' s, and who married Peter's daughter Susannah Shelton, in his last will named Ralph (4) as his heir and brother of his wife. Earlier, on October 10, 1702, the following entry was made in Essex County court Book: "Certificate according to Act of Assembly is granted to Thomas Meriwether for the importation of seven persons into the colony by name: Sarah Eaton, Richard Cullen, Ralph Shelton, (illegible name), Mary Milner, Isaac Bayly, Edward Cartwr ight.” Kenyon Stevenson wrote that this was the first appearance of Ralph Shelton (4) of Middlesex County, Virginia, in the cases of the seven above it would appear that they were obligated to Meriwether for his having furnished passage and vouched for them, they probably having contracted to work for him for a set number of years, Ralph(4) then being 17 years of age.

In 1708 Ralph Shelton (4) was a witness to the will of Thomas Meriwether in Essex County. To this he signed his name Ralph Shelton six years after his importation. He was a beneficiary to the will, part of which read: "I give unto Ralph Shelton and his heirs forever the 60 acres of land granted to me by patent Joining to the lands of Rice Jones, John Lohees, and the land formerly belonging to Captain Edward Thomas." This land was described as standing by the Dragon swamp. The description places the land on the Middlesex-Essex boundary line. This land remained in possession of the family of Ralph Shelton (4) for sixty years. It appears that Ralph (4) lived on an adjoining tract in Middlesex County for the rest of his life. An entry in the Christ Church parish vestry Book on October 20, 1727 reads: "Ordered that Mr. Garrett Daniel and Mr. Ralph Shelton procession every particular person's land between the Briary Swamp (from the Millstone Valley to the Dragon Swamp) and the upper end of the county and from the main road to the Dragon Swamp on the south side of the main road." Lewis Montague and Reuben Shelton were ordered to procession the exact same area above.

Ralph Shelton (4) married about 1707. His wife's name was Mary, and it is thought that her last name was Crispin. Ralph and Mary had eleven children:

Another Ralph Shelton of this era, possibly the son of James of Hanover and York Counties, Virginia, married Mary Pollard. Heretofore this writer has considered Ralph (4) and this Ralph one and the same and that Mary Pollard was the second wife of Ralph (4). Other historians have insisted that there were two Ralph Sheltons of this era, although living parallel lives the other
Ralph lived on the opposite side of Dismal swamp from Ralph (4.). Further research and conversation with Grover Shelton and others have convinced me that there were two and that Mary Crispin was the mother of all eleven of the children of Ralph (4). The other Ralph, born about 1690, wed Mary Pollard in about 1712. They had children among who was a son James:

James Shelton, son of Ralph and Mary Pollard Shelton, was born about 1717. He wed and had at least three children. He bought land in Halifax County, Virginia, sold it and moved west to buy on North Mayo River on its Horsepasture and Ironmonger Branches in Henry County, Virginia, one grant a parcel of 1575 acres, and a total acreage of 2000 acres. Some historians consider this James as founder of Patrick County, Virginia. Among his children were two sons and a daughter: William, Samuel and the daughter was I believe named Elizabeth. To each of his sons and his son-in-law, Gregory Durham, he gave a farm in 1780. The name of James' wife is not at hand. Their children were:

William Shelton, son of James and Shelton, was

born about 1734. He married Patsy Critz, whom Grover Shelton names as the daughter of Captain Haymon Critz who commanded a company under Colonel Penn which in 1781 marched to the assistance of General Greene at Guilford Court House, North Carolina, Colonel Perm's regiment comprising companies from Henry County, Virginia. William and Patsy Cretz Shelton had at least two sons. John and Porter Shelton, and possibly a daughter named Patsy Shelton. This writer has presumed that Porter Shelton was the son of Patsy Shelton; she being the daughter of Josiah and Elizabeth Shelton, Josiah having named Patsy in his will which he wrote from Halifax, Virginia in 1797. It may have been that Patsy Cretz above, at the time of her marriage to William Shelton, was the widow of Haymon Cretz instead of his daughter. William Shelton oste- sibly died in testate, as there is a paper on record stating the division of his property among, his heirs, those named being John, patsy and Porter, patsy being either his wife or daughter. The paper shows porter as being from Rutherford County, North Carolina, and that William was the son of James Shelton

Samuel Shelton, son of James and _ Shelton, was born about 1736. He is on record as having inherited a farm in Henry County from his father.

Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of James and ___ _______________________________ Shelton

was born about 1738. She married Gregory Durham in Henry County in about 1770. Her father presented them with a farm in Henry County in 1780.

Ralph Shelton (4) lived for only 4 years after the death of his youngest, Daniel His will, badly damaged in the old Middlesex will book, was proved March 10, 1733. There were some provisions

legible. He gave land to his son Ralph (5) and to him he also gave one cow and calf. To Elizabeth he gave 25 shillings for the purchase of an item illegible in the will. He stipulated that his son Thomas should take care of the children and in case of Thomas' death they should be care for by Ralph and Crispin. He appointed his "loving wife" Mary and son- Thomas to be his executors. Witnesses were: William Buford, Thomas Clarke, Henry Buford, and one whose first name was Abraham. The will was presented to court on April 2, 1734 and proved by oaths of Henry Buford and Thomas Clarke. Appointed and sworn to appraise the estate were Thomas Buford, John Jones, John Clarke and Garret Daniel, inventory and appraisement were presented to the court on July 2, 1734. Mary Crispin Shelton remarried. His name was Peter Clarke. She, however in 1745, reportedly went with sons Ralph and Crispin and their families and her younger sons, John, Benjamin, James and Daniel, to Amelia County. She made her will as Mary Clark in Nottaway Parish in Amelia County on June 30, 1750. She mentioned her sons Ralph Shelton (5) Crispin Shelton, John Shelton, Benjamin Shelton James Shelton and Daniel Shelton; grandchildren Reuben Shelton, and Patience Catey Blakey; and daughter Elizabeth Davis. The bulk of her estate went to her youngest son, Daniel, then approaching 21. This included negro wench Janey. Daniel was named executor of the estate.

Thomas Shelton, eldest son of Ralph (4) and Mary Crispin Shelton, born in Middlesex County, Virginia on November 11, 1707, was likely named for Thomas Meriwether, who was on record as having imported Ralph (4) along with 6 other people into Christ Church Parish in 1702. He wed Mary Probert on January l4, 1730. They had 5 children: Reuben, born May l6, 1733; Josiah, born about 1735; Mary, born February 21, 1737 who died August 5, 1742; Thomas, born May 2, 1740; and Micajah, born June 20, 1742. The father died in Middlesex County on March 24, 1742, leaving 4 small children and one yet unborn. Ten years later, on July 11, 1752, the court ordered Thomas Clarke, administrator of Thomas Shelton's estate, to render an accounting of his administration of the estate at the next meeting of the court. At this court also, on motion of Josiah Shelton, orphan son of Thomas, Samuel Smith was appointed as Josiah’s guardian, on May 4, 1762, the court approved Ambrose Jeffrys as Micajah’ s guardian. Josiah Shelton reportedly went to Lunenburg County, as the Cumberland Parish lists of 1769-1776 showed a Josiah Shelton. In 1782 a Josiah Shelton was taxed in Charlotte County, Virginia on 9 whites and one slave, and in 1797 he left will in Halifax County naming wife Elizabeth and seven children: Godfrey Shelton, Josiah Shelton, Absullom Shelton, Anne Shelton Clements (Mrs. Benjamin), Ruthey Shelton Murphy, Patsey Shelton and Elizabeth Shelton. Godfrey Shelton had been on the Lunenburg tithe list of 1776 indentured under Josiah, indicating that Godfrey had just turned 18. Josiah' son Josiah wed Fathy (Ruthy) Ford in Halifax County May 25, 1798. Elizabeth Shelton may have wed Decker Owen, one Jean Lurvey, descendant of James Owen, born about 1724, brother of John Owen, wrote that she was compiling a history of the Owen family, that Decker Owen, born about 1755, son of John Owen of Halifax County, Virginia, wed Elizabeth Shelton by 1780, she wrote that Francis Shelton was a neighbor of the Owen family, it is probable that Josiah's daughter, Patsey Shelton married a William Shelton, had sons John and Porter and possibly a daughter Patsey. It is possible that Josiah's brother, Thomas Shelton, son of Thomas and Mary Probert Shelton, migrated to Brunswick County, Virginia. By an

Essex County deed dated November l6, 1771 Thomas Shelton and wife Caty of Meherrin parish, Brunswick County, owned land in Essex County which had come to them on division of land formerly belonging to James Munday, father of Thomas' wife Caty (Katherine). James Munday had, besides Caty, 4 other daughters: Mary, who wed James Croxton; Ursula, who wed John Boughan; Lucy; and Betty. In 1782 there were no Thomas Sheltons in Brunswick County, but in the adjoining county to the east, Greensville, Thomas is shown with a household of 11 whites.

Ralph Shelton(5), second son of Ralph(4) and Mary Crispin Shelton, was born October 3, 1709 in Middlesex County, Virginia, is the progenitor of the line of which Roderick Shelton(7) and James Shelton(8), the latter of McMinn County, Tennessee, descended, the two of whose history this treatise is primarily written. Ralph Shelton(5) is covered in Chapter VI of this book.

Elizabeth Shelton, first daughter and third child of Ralph(4) and Mary Crispin Shelton, was born about 1711. She wed William Davis on October 9, 1729. She died childless.

Crispin Shelton, third son of Ralph (4) and Mary Crispin Shelton, was born Middlesex County, Virginia on April 1, 1713. He wed Letitia _____ whose last name was likely Beuford about 1734 in Middlesex County. He was in Essex County until after August 1742, as an Essex County record that month shows that a negro lad named Sam, 10 years of age, was adjudged as belonging to him. Shortly after that Crispin along with his mother, brother Ralph(5) and their families turned toward Amelia County, some 100 miles to the southwest, which county in 1734 had been created from Brunswick and Prince George Counties. At first the county included also the areas now Prince Edward and Nottaway Counties. On July 14, 1743 Matthew Smart of Prince George County sold Crispin Shelton of South Farnham Parish, Essex County, 600 acres on South Nottaway River in Amelia County. Crispin and Letitia sold two portions of this in 1746 -- 155 acres to Henry Beuford of Amelia and 203 acres to James Beuford of Orange County, the lands lying south side of Rocky Creek, in the fork of Nottaway. The deeds were signed by Ralph(5) and Benjamin as witnesses. Crispin Shelton's Pittsylvania County career began when on Aug 15, 1764, he received a grant of 1515 acres on both sides of the North Fork of Panther Creek (now Whitehorn) in Halifax County in the portion of which later became Pittsylvania County. He moved with some of his family to the new land. As early as 1767 Crispin and his son Abraham were members of the vestry of Camden Parish in the portion of Halifax County which in 1767 became permanently Pittsylvania County. Crispin continued to own land in Amelia County until October 20, 1777, when he and Letitia deeded the 262 acres of their original purchase from Matthew Smart plus 100 acres he bought In 1761 from Thornton Pryor to Peter Lamkln — Benjamin and Leonard Shelton, Stith Bolling, William Osborne, Jr. and John Finney having witnessed the deed. Crispin and Letitia Shelton had 10 sons and 3 daughters. His will probated February 17, 1794, named the following: Abraham, Gabriel, Lewis, Beverly, Spencer, Armistead, Vincent and Crispin Shelton, Jr.; Elizabeth Hurt’s heirs, Jane Todd (wife of William Todd), Susannah Dickerson (wife of Griffith), his wife Lettice, Abner Shelton. William Shelton. son of Crispin and Letitia Shelton was born March 4, 1735, was not named in his father's will.

Abraham Shelton, son of Crispin and Letitia Shelton, was born about 1737. He wed Chloe Robertson of Amelia County on January 16, 1760. He served with his father Crispin Shelton on the Pittsylvania County Commission for the Trial of Tories, and they were on a court of inquiry that administered the oath of allegiance in 1777. Abraham became the Escheater of the Counties of the properties owned by British subjects and represented Pittsylvania County in the General Assembly of 1777-1778. He was appointed as Sheriff Commonwealth of Virginia on November 18, 1783 and served through 1784. From the close of the Revolutionary War until 1789 he was Colonel of 1st Battalion of the County Militia. He died in about 1799; his will was proven that year in Pittsylvania court. He and Chloe Robertson Shelton had 10 children, 7 sons, 3 daughters. Chloe died in 1804. Among her legatees were her beloved daughter Jane Stone (Mrs. John), and son Robertson as Executor of her will. She had been left well off. Those named by Abraham in order of his listing were: Chloe Robertson Shelton; Lettice, Ann, Jane, Abraham, Crispin, William, Tavenor, Frederick, Meacon and Robertson Shelton. Chloe did not name Ann or Meacon. They were likely deceased. She named Jane Stone and Lettice White, indicating they were both married. Following were named:

Crispin Shelton, son of Abraham and Chloe Robertson Shelton, was born February 28, 1761. He wed Susannah Irby in Amelia County on October 28, 1775. She was born August 6, 1762 and died January 9, l846, the daughter of Charles and Ann Robertson Irby. They had 7 children: Chas Irby, Abraham Cowper, Ann Robertson, Chloe Robertson, Meacon Ashley, Martha Irby and Nancy Shelton.

Charles Irby Shelton, son of Crispin and Susannah Irby Shelton, was born Nov.l6, 1786. He wed a Miss Ashley. He served in the War of 1812.

Abraham Cowper Shelton, son of Crispin and Susannah Irby Shelton, was born December 21, 1789. He wed Mary Leigh Claibourne on February 2, 1819. He died in 18140. They had 4 children: Charles, Nathan B., William Claibourne, and Peachy Gilmer Shelton, the last named who wed his cousin Susannah Catherine Shelton, daughter of Meacon A. Shelton, and had Willie Claibourne Shelton.

Ann Robertson Shelton, daughter of Crispin and Susannah Irby Shelton, born December 12, 1794, died in 1799.

Chloe Robertson Shelton, daughter of Crispin and Susan Irby Shelton, was born December 2, 1792, died in 1833. She wed Thompson Robertson on December l5, 1812.

Meacon Ashley Shelton, son of Crispin and Susannah Irby Shelton, was born July 7, 1797. He wed twice, first to Anna R. Evans in Halifax County on December 7, l824.

and second to Anna Burger on June 1, 1826, his first wife haying died March 4 that year, having had Charles Crispin Shelton sixteen days earlier. Meacon Ashley and Anna Berger Shelton had 8 children: Susannah Catherine, who wed her cousin, Peachy Gilmer Shelton; Martha Irby Shelton, who wed Thomas F. Wells and had Thomas Wells; Jacob Berger Shelton, who wed Eveline J. Dutton and had Jacob, Cooper, Charles, Sue, Pattie and Josephine; Abraham Cowper Shelton; Chloe Elizabeth Shelton, who wed Alexander Machette and had Annie and Ettie; Christiana Mildred Shelton, born l842, who died in 1848; Mary Leigh Shelton, who wed Thomas W. Hammond and had Cowper, Lucy and Harry Hammond; Lucy Anna Shelton, who wed Robert B. Sample and had Anna, Baylor, Muscoe, Nathaniel M., Will, Robert and Virginia Sample; Nathaniel Meacon Shelton, who wed Belle T. Carges and had Mable O., Charles W., and Anna Elizabeth Shelton.

Martha Irby Shelton, dau of Crispin and Susannah Irby Shelton, was born February 26, 1803, died at 27.

Nancy Shelton, said to be daughter of Crispin and Susannah Irby Shelton, born about 1805, was not named in his will.

Lettice Shelton, daughter of Abraham and Chloe Robertson Shelton, was born about 1767. She married Jeremiah White in Pittsylvania County on August 4, 1791. An 80-acre plot they owned in the county in l804 was bordered by lands of Tavenor Shelton, Abraham Shelton, John Stone, Lewis Coles and Vincent Shelton_. Jeremiah was the son of Jeremiah and Jane Manner White. They had also son William White and daughter Nancy White. The elder Jeremiah’s will, probated April 28, 1788 listed the following: Jane White (wife) use of Manner plantation, 8 negroes, mill. William and Jeremiah White, sons, farm lands bounded by Bannister River, known by the name of Shelton Ford. Daughter Nancy White, the farm.

Ann Shelton, daughter of Abraham and Chloe Robertson Shelton, was born about 1769. This may have been really Nancy Shelton who wed Phillip Grasty in Pittsylvania County on December 15, 1800, witnessed by Robertson Shelton, Crispin Shelton as Guardian, and John Jenkins.

Jane Shelton, daughter of Abraham and Chloe Robertson Shelton, was born about 1770. She wed John Stone about 1788. They had an 80-acre plot in Pittsylvania County bordered by lands of Abraham Shelton, Pannill, Lewis, Coles, Jeremiah White and Tavenor Shelton. She was principal heir of her mother Chloe Robertson Shelton in her will of 1803.

Abraham Shelton, son of Abraham and Chloe Robertson Shelton, was born about 1772. He wed a Lettice Shelton, daughter of John Shelton, on December 17, 1792, witnessed by Fred Shelton and her father, In a will made on July 20, 1829, he named a Francis Shelton a legatee. Abraham Shelton owned an 80-acre plot in Pittsylvania County bordered by lands of Pannill, John Stone, Lewis, Coles, Jeremiah White and Tavenor Shelton. 18, l804, listed the following legatees: Abraham Shelton, Joel Shelton, Francis Shelton, Jane Lewis, Mary Poore, William Shelton, Martha Tucker, Charlotte Shelton, Lettice Shelton, Lucy Hurt and Nancy White.

Meacon Shelton, son of Abraham and Chloe Robertson Shelton was born about 1774. He is thought to have died before 1803, is not named in his mother’s will, probated in l804.

William Shelton, son of Abraham and Chloe Robertson Shelton, was born about 1763. He married Martisha Taylor on October 29, 1786, witnessed by Abraham Shelton. He later wed Elizabeth C. Johnson, witnessed by Frederick Shelton and James Johnson, father of Elizabeth C., on March 3, 1791. One William Shelton on November 29, 1827 made a will in Pittsylvania County wherein he named the following legatees: Anna R. Shelton, Thomas Shelton, Robert H. Shelton, Elizabeth Shelton, Nancy Williams, Martha Yeaman, John Shelton, Bennett Shelton, and Noah Shelton. Elizabeth Shelton wed Vincent Shelton on June 22, l8l4, bondsman Wesley Shelton. Anna R. Shelton wed Pleasant R. Murphy on November 16, 18l8.

Tavenor Shelton, son of Abraham and Chloe Robertson Shelton, was born about 1764. He wed Peggy Arch Deacon on November 20, 1804. He was a physician. He sold property in both 1792 and 1793 — in 1792 to David Allen and in 1793 to William Beavers. An 80-acre plot of land he owned in Pittsylvania County in 1804 was bordered by lands of Crispin Shelton, Abraham Shelton, John Stone, Jeremiah White and Frederick Shelton.

Frederick Shelton, son of Abraham and Chloe Robertson Shelton, was born about 1766. He wed Polley Shelton in Pittsylvania county, Virginia on October l6, 1795, daughter of David Shelton, witnessed by Armistead Shelton, married by Thomas Payne. There are many records of Frederick in Pitts-ylvania County from July in 1789 to October in 1820. (See page 264) Among these was a record of a second marriage. On February 6, 1809, he is said to have married Winney Jones, witnessed by Robert Sharp. His will, which was probated October 16, 1820 in Pittsylvania county listed the following legatees: Patsy Lewis Shelton, Chloe Robertson Shelton, Steven Shelton, Letty Shelton, Martin Shelton, Christopher Shelton, Meacon, Thompson_, Wickham D. Shelton, Wesley Shelton, Jane Shelton and Robertson Shelton, the last named a son who wed Mary S. Davis on May 3, 1819. Pittsylvania records involving Frederick were as a witness to marriages and deeds.

Robertson Shelton, son of Abraham and Chloe Robertson Shelton, was born January 26, 1771. He married Jane Guthrie in Giles County, Virginia in l8l6. He was a legatee in his father’s will probated in 1788 and was an Executor in that of his mother in 1803. He along with his brothers Crispin and William Shelton was appointed Justice of Pittsylvania County in 1795, a nephew, Robertson Shelton, in will of Fred Shelton in 1820. He was grantor in deed to Benjamin Shelton in Pittsylvania County on April 17, 1797. He reportedly

had 3 sons: William Harrison Shelton, Sylvester Robertson Shelton and James Madison Shelton.

William Harrison Shelton, son of Robertson and Jane Guthrie Shelton, was born in Giles County, Virginia on May 3, 1817. He wed Martha Ann Ogg on May 20, l84O in the home of her father near Greenfield, Indiana. They moved to Jefferson County, Iowa where he died on November 23, 1880. They reportedly had 12 children: Caroline Shelton, who wed a Hayzlett; Jane Shelton, who wed _____ Adams; Austin Shelton, born 1844; Josephine Shelton, who wed _____ Anderson; William Luther Shelton; James Sylvester Shelton; Franklin Shelton, born 1852; Mary Shelton, who wed _____ Kirby; Julia Shelton, who wed _____ Walker; Everett Lee Shelton; Sarah Elizabeth Shelton, who wed _____ Daft and had Dr. Floyd Shelton Daft who resided in Chevy Chase, Maryland; and John Shelton, born February 18, 1866.

Sylvester Robertson Shelton, son of Robertson and Jane Guthrie Shelton, was born in Logan County, West Virginia on August 11, 1819. He wed Hannah Dragoo in Kingsland, Indiana on September 8, l84O. They had 9 children: Jane Shelton, who died young; Thomas Shelton; Abigail (Dollie) Shelton, who wed _____ Stahl; Martin Shelton, who was born in 1846; Julia Shelton, who married _____ Johnson; Henrietta Shelton, who died unwed; Nancy Shelton who wed a Spalding; John Shelton; and William Sylvester Shelton.

James Madison Shelton, son of Robertson and Jane Guthrie
Shelton, was born in 1822 in Hamilton County, Indiana. He
wed Elizabeth Cooper in about 1840. They moved to Henry
County, Indiana in 1850. They had 5 children: Oelo Shelton,
who wed a Witmer; James Leander Shelton; Marshall E.
Shelton; Alice Shelton, who wed a Hudelson; and Mary Ida
Shelton, who wed _____ Shideler.

Lewis Shelton, son of Crispin and Letitia Shelton, was born about 1740. He was on the first tax lists of Pittsylvania County, was shown as having one slave, a negro Pat. in 1767. Being a minister, he performed three marriages in 1781 in Pittsylvania County, earlier an Episcopal layman, became a Baptist minister after the Revolution. On May 28, 1774 he deeded land to Thomas Murdock in Pittsylvania County, and on February 23, 1775 he and wife Mary deeded land to Charles Lewis there. He may have moved to Franklin County, Georgia about that time. There was a Lewis Shelton who was a Justice of the Peace in that county in 1785-1787 and Commissioner of Justice there 1787-1788.

Gabriel Shelton, son of Crispin and Letitia Shelton, was born about 1742. He wed twice, first to Elizabeth Shepherd on March 24, 1762 and second to Mrs. Mary Buford. Gabriel was a captain in Pittsylvania County Militia. He and his brother Vincent, an Ensign, marched their company to Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina and fought against the British there on March 15, 1781. Shelton and William Pace. Among other grantees were
Thomas Moore, Vincent Shelton, Jasquelin Ambler and David
Pannill. In 1780 he and Crispin were grantees to the Treas-
urer of the Commonwealth of Virginia. His appointment as
a Captain in Pittsylvania County Militia was February 27,

will above. He is said to have wed twice, first to Elizabeth Shepherd on March 24, 1762 and second to Mrs. Mary Beuford, both in Pittsylvania County. Gabriel was on the first tax lists in the county in l767 and lived on Panther Creek at Chalk Level. His land joined that of his brother Vincent. His children were:

Wyatt Shelton, son of Gabriel and Elizabeth Shepherd Shelton, born about 1763, appeared in deed records in Pittsylvania County. He was witness with Vincent, Gregory, Benjamin and Gabriel on December 29, 1790 on a deed from William Pace to Lemuel Shelton, and with the same people, same date, from William Pace to Roderick Shelton.

Gregory Shelton, son of Gabriel and Elizabeth Shepherd Shelton, was born about 1765. He wed Elizabeth Beuford on December 17, 1792.

Beverly Shelton, son of Gabriel and Elizabeth Shepherd Shelton, was born about 1767- He wed his cousin, Olive Shelton, born 1790, daughter of his uncle Armistead on August 8, 1803.

Lemuel Shelton, son of Gabriel and Elizabeth Shepherd Shelton, was born about 1769. He wed his cousin, Lettice W. Shelton, born about 1772, daughter of his father's brother Beverly Shelton, on August 2, 1796. Lemuel and Lettice had sons Hubbard C. Shelton and Richard T. Shelton.

Gabriel Shelton, Jr., son of Gabriel and Elizabeth Shepherd Shelton, was born about 1771. He married Rachael Shepherd, daughter of William Shepherd, born about 1781, on September 24, 1799.

Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of Gabriel and Elizabeth Shepherd Shelton, was born about 1773. She wed her cousin Coleman Shelton, born about 1776, son of her Uncle Beverly, on July 27, 1797.

Katherine Shelton, daughter of Gabriel and Elizabeth Shepherd Shelton, was born about 1775. She married _____ Payne. (It is noted that one Sally Shelton, born about that same time married Thomas Payne — himself who performed marriage ceremonies — on October l6, 1795.

Lettice Shelton, daughter of Gabriel and Elizabeth Shepherd Shelton, was born about 1779. She married her cousin Stephen Shelton, son of her Uncle Armistead, on August 22, 1798. She and Stephen had 8 children. (See page 265.) Lettice died in 1822. Their children were Martin M., Christopher, Meacon, Tunstall, Thompson, Wickham D., Wesley and Jane Shelton.

Gabriel Shelton, son of Gabriel, and Elizabeth Shepherd Shelton, was born about 1781. He wed Lettice Shelton, his first cousin once removed, daughter of John Shelton, Jr., born about 1760, on December 17, 1792.

Reddick Shelton, son of Gabriel and Elizabeth Shepherd Shelton, was born about 1783. He wed Nancy Shelton, born about 1783, on December 7, 1802. In Pittsylvania marriage records there are listed no less than three Nancy Sheltons besides this one: Nancy Shelton who wed Richard Shelton on July 16, 1792, witnessed by William Clark; Nancy Shelton who wed William White January 13, 1795, witnessed by Armistead Shelton; and Nancy Shelton who wed Phillip L. Grasty December 15, 1800, guardian Crispin Shelton, witness Robertson Shelton.

Spencer Shelton, son of Crispin and Letitia Shelton, was born about 1744 in Amelia County, Virginia. When Pittsylvania County was formed in June, 1767, Spencer was on the first tax lists, showing 3 slaves: Tom, Lucy and Primus. On February 27, 1777, he was appointed Lieutenant with Elisha Shelton. In 1778 he was made Captain. On January 15, 1787 he deeded property to Elkhan-nah Adams, and October 21, 1793 he deeded property to Charles Keatts, and on July 15, 1799 he deeded property to John Keatts. On August 18, 1789 he witnessed the marriage of Thomas Willis to Molley Yates. He was a legatee In the will of Crispin Shelton. February 17, 1794. In 1773 he wed Clara Shelton, his first cousin, daughter of Daniel Shelton. Clara died about 1809. Spencer shows in Pittsylvania County in the census for both 1782 and 1785. Spencer bought land in Lincoln County, North Carolina on Killian Creek on June 18, 1799. He was listed in the census of that year but Clara does not appear. Neither of them appears in Lincoln or Pittsylvania County in the census of 1810. He and Clara had 7 children: Spencer, Nelson, Mildred, Chloe, Temple, Jeremiah, and Meacon Shelton.

Spencer Shelton, son of Spencer and Clara, b. Oct. 19, 1771, was wed about 1795, though her name is unknown. They had son born 1795 who wed Sallie Lockman. This Spencer, and Sallie had 13 children, page 387. These are the 3 Spencers in a row.

Nelson Shelton, son of Spencer and Clara was born in Pitts. County about 1773. He died In Lincoln County, North Carolina April 20, 1832. He wed Frances Sadler in 1803, marriage bond 500 lbs, secured by Zachary Sadler, witnessed by James Dickson. At his death he was possessed of much land in Lincoln County. In his will which was written in 1832 named Fanny and his 12 children. Executors were Young and Henry

Shelton. Nelson had bought a large plantation in Georgia. Fanny sold the homeplace in 1834 to her daughter Jenoia and husband David J. Pryor, the deed witnessed by Leroy and Ann Shelton. The plantation in Georgia was also sold, Henry and Young Shelton having made trips there to sell the property. Ten of the 12 children moved to Pickens County, Alabama. Polly, born about 1804, remained in Lincoln, and son Spencer, born December 31, l8l8, moved to Texas.

Polly Shelton, daughter of Nelson and Frances Sadler Shelton, was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina in about 1804. She wed Andrew Dellinger there on March 29, l824. In his will made in 1863 he listed besides Polly 7 children: Archibald Cathey Shelton who wed and had A. C., Jr. and Sam; Violet C. Dellinger who didn't wed; Mary Ann (Molly) Dellinger, who wed Rufus Kirby Kidd and had Clementine, Leroy and Furman Kidd; Frances (Fanny) Dellinger, who wed a Reagan and had Ella Reagan; George Shelton Dellinger, born 1834, killed in Civil War; Leroy M. Dellinger, who wed and had son C. A.; and Lorenzo D. Dellinger, who was lost to the family.

Young Shelton, son of Nelson and Frances Sadler Shelton, was born in 1806. He married Judith L. Sherrill February 15, 1828 and had 8 children. He had married earlier to Mary M. Thompson — March 22 In 1827 in Lincoln County — by whom he had one child and Mary and the baby both died. Young and Judith moved to Pickens County, Alabama in about 1845. Their 8 children were: Ely Sherrill Shelton, who wed Susan Vail, was in Civil War, had 5 children; Mary Ann Shelton, who wed Duff Green Holcomb and had 8 children; Louis Henry Shelton, who was in Civil War under Robert E. Lee, wed thrice — first to Mary Elizabeth Huff, by whom he had 10 children, second to Ella Howard, by whom he had 1 child, and third to Isabella Spruill, by whom he had no children; Fanny E. Shelton, who didn’t marry; Freeman Blanton Shelton, who was in Civil War, wed Valera Lenora Woods, had 11 children; Harriet Luvina Shelton, who wed her cousin Daniel Marion Shelton, had 8 children; John Wesley Shelton, who wed twice — first to Paralee Atkins, had one child, and second to Mattie T. Rebecca Louisa Lowe, daughter of Franklin and Martha Mundy Lowe, was born in l830; on November 18, 1848, she wed William Anderson Wood in Columbus, Mississippi. They moved to Pickens County, Alabama where their 3 children were born: John Thomas Wood who wed Mary Leahy and had 3 children; Henry Shelton Wood; and Martha A. Wood, who died young.

Thomas Lowe, son of Franklin and Martha Mundy Love, born 1833, wed Sarah J. ____, born Alabama about 1839, in about 1852, They had 3 children: Dave Lowe who wed and had 2 sons and 3 daughters; Laura Emma Lowe who wed James Henry Stokes and had 7 children; and Lela Lowe who did not marry.

Marcus Wilburn Lowe, son of Franklin and Martha Mundy Lowe, born 1835, killed in Civil War as 2nd Lieutenant. Wed about 1856 to his cousin Susan Salina Shelton, daughter of Crispin Shelton. Marcus and Susan had 3 children: John Franklin Lowe who wed Virginia Alice Whitby and had 4 children; William Thomas Lowe who wed Mrs. Pearl Butler, served in State Senate; Marcus Wilburn Lowe married and had 2 daughters.

Albert C. Lowe, son of Franklin and Martha Mundy Lowe, was born in North Caroline in 1837.

Shelton, born 1808 in North Carolina, daughter of Temple Shelton, witnessed by David Lockman. His second wife was another Susan Shelton, daughter of Spencer Shelton. By her he had no issue, but by Susannah B. he had 12 children:

He witnessed with Reddick Shelton the marriage of Lettice W. Shelton to Lemuel Shelton on August 2, 1796, He with Abraham, Vincent and William Shelton deeded land to Jasquelin Ambler on November 18, 1786. Beverly was shown in the census of 1782 in Pittsylvania County to have in his household 8 whites and 7 blacks and in that of 1785 to have 7 whites. He was a legatee and one of the Executors in the will of his father, Crispin Shelton, probated February 17, 1794. John Stone, Pittsylvania County Surveyor, deposed in l804 that Vincent and Beverly Shelton, County Commissioners, had directed him to make a survey of the land of Abraham Shelton (page 334). Though Beverly and Ann had several children, the names of only 4 of them are at hand. Richard, Beverly, Lettice Weeks, and Coleman Shelton.

Richard Shelton, son of Beverly and Ann Coleman Shelton, was born about 1771. He wed Nancy Shelton July l6, 1792.

Beverly Shelton, Jr., son of Beverly and Ann Coleman Shelton, was born about 1766, wed his first cousin, Rita Shelton, daughter of Armistead Shelton, on Oct. 31, 1803.

Lettice weeks Shelton, daughter of Beverly and Ann Coleman Shelton, was born about 1775. She married Lemuel Shelton, son of Gabriel, in Pittsylvania County August 2, 1796, witnessed by Reddick and Beverly Shelton.(F.), had 2 sons.

Richard Coleman Shelton, son of Lemuel and Lettice W. Shelton Shelton, was born about 1794. He is the ancestor of E. 0. Shelton of Eldon, Missouri.

Richmond T. Shelton, son of Lemuel and Lettice W. Shel- ton Shelton, was born about 1796, died in 1844.

Coleman Shelton, son of Beverly and Ann Coleman Shelton, was born about 1777. He married his first cousin, Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of Gabriel, on July 27, 1797, married by Thomas Payne.

Armistead Shelton, son of Crispin and Letitia Shelton, was born about 1748. He received land on White Thorn Creek by his father’s will. He was appointed Ensign in 1777. He wed Susannah Shelton, daughter of Daniel Shelton, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on September 1, 1774. Armistead along with Crispin Jr. and Vincent, were Justices of the Peace in the county in the 1790’s, called members of the Commission of Peace, holding court for civil cases each month. His marriage to Susannah was witnessed by Joseph Aikin and David Shelton. He is in various deed records in the county from 1783 to 1800, grantees being William Parsons, Thomas Shelton, William Clark, Sherwood Willis, Leroy Shelton and John Mc Shelton. On October 20, 1794 he signed a writ emancipating slaves. In his will, proved August 19, 1844, will book 1, page 494, son Wesley was Executor. He named 9 children and a grandson, Martin M. He wed Lettie Shepherd Shelton, daughter of William and Elizabeth Chaney Johnson Shelton, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on June 22, 1814. Lettie died in 1876. The census of 1850 in the county shows the following in the household of Vincent and Lettie Shelton: Martha Shelton, age 62; James Shelton, age 32; Martha Shelton, age 18, John Shelton, 17; Tazewell Shelton, l6, and George 10.

Wesley Shelton, son of Armistead and Susannah Shelton Shelton, was born about 1792. He was shown in the census of 1850 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Listed in his household were: White Shelton, brick layer, age 21; Mary Shelton, age 25; Gustavus, age 5; Albert Shelton, age 3; and Samuel Shelton, age 1. The last named was Samuel F. Shelton, born 1849, who became a minister and was living in Illinois in 1879. This writer's father, Samuel White Shelton, was by tradition named for a minister named Samuel White, who preached in the area of McMinn County where dad was born. This fact was not dwelt upon in the family because the preacher fell by the wayside and no longer was able to pursue the honored profession, reportedly moved away to a distant realm,

Susan Shelton, gr.-dau. of Armistead and Susannah Shelton Shelton, was born about 1796. She wed John Ferguson on August 23, 1816. She was likely daughter of Rebecca, was in will of her grandfather Armistead.

Stephen died in 1822, prior to the date of his father’s will, which was probated in l844. Stephen and Lettice had 8 children: Martin M. Shelton, Christopher Shelton, Meacon Shelton, Tunstall Shelton, Thompson Shelton, Wickham D. Shelton, Wesley Shelton and Jane Shelton. Martin M. Shelton was named in the will of Stephen's father, Armistead Shelton:

Martin M. Shelton, son of Stephen and Lettice Shelton Shelton, was born about 1799. He was a legatee in the will of his grandfather, Armistead Shelton. He wed Polly ____, born in 1795, in about 1817. In the census of 1850 in Pittsylvania County there were shown in the household of Martin and Polly 4 other people: Milly Shelton, born 1820, Letitia Shelton, born 1829; William Shelton, born 1831; and James Shelton, born 1835. These were probably children of Martin and Lettice, those of the household born in the 1820’s likely having already established homes of their own.

He was appointed Ensign in the Pittsylvania County Militia on September 7, 1775. He appeared in various deed records in the county: On March 19, 1782 as grantee from Spencer and Clary M. Shelton; on November 21, 1785 as grantor with Abraham Shelton to Commonwealth of Virginia; on June 18, 1787 as grantee from Abraham Shelton; on July l6, 1787 as grantee from Benjamin Shelton, Sr.; on May 17, 1791 as grantor separately to Jasquelin Ambler and Gideon Roach; June 20, 1795 as grantee from Daniel Shelton, Sr.; on June 15, 1797 as grantor to John Shelton; on July 15, 1799 with wife Susannah as grantors to David Pannill; on July 21, 1800 with Susannah for relinquishment of dower; on July 21, 1790 as grantor to William Shelton, witnessed by John, Frances, Abraham, Nancy and Letey Shelton; on December 29, 1790 as witnesses with Wyatt, Gregory, Benjamin and Gabriel Shelton in transfer from William Pace to Lemuel Shelton, and the same to Roderick Shelton the same date. He was named in the will of his father Crispin on February 17, 1794. He was a Commissioner in Pittsylvania County in 1790. He owned land adjacent to Gabriel's on Panther Creek. He and Susannah had several children, in the census of 1782 five were listed in his family, plus 2 blacks; in 1795 the census showed 6 in the household. The names of only 2 children are at hand, sons. There was also evidently a daughter who wed about 1800.

Elizabeth Shelton. daughter of Crispin and Letitia Shelton, was born about 1744. She wed Moses Hurt in about 1760. His will was probated in Pittsylvania County on January 21, 1799 listing only Anne Shelton as legatee. He was granted 40 acres on Whitehorn Creek and Spring Branch by Reddick Shelton in Pittsylvania County on October 19, 1795. Elizabeth was deceased at the time of Crispin's will and he listed "heirs of Elizabeth Hurt". Elizabeth was signatory to a deed on October 21, 1805 with Reddick and Anne Shelton, David and Rhody Shelton, and Ezekiel and Jane Hendrick to land transferred to Thomas Robertson, by Anne, David, Rhody and Reddick Shelton. Elizabeth's children were: West Dandridge, Garland, Moses, Absolum, Ann (Nancy), Jane, Sally L. and Rhoda S. Hurt.

He was on a jury in 1790 with Sheltons and Shelton kin in the county in the trial in the murder of slave Simon by slave Watt on Isaac Cole's plantation.

Garland Hurt, son of Moses and Elizabeth Shelton Hurt, was born about 1763, wed Martisha Thurston in Pittsylvania County on September 25, 1789, witnessed by her father, John Thurston and by Thomas Shelton.

Rhoda S. Hurt, daughter of Moses and Elizabeth Shelton Hurt, was born about 1773. She wed David Shelton, thought to be son of James Shelton, in Pittsylvania County on July 21, 1800, witnessed by Benjamin and Elizabeth Shelton and married by Thomas Payne. Rhoda along with Anne, David and Reddick Shelton were grantors in a deed October 21, 1805 to Thomas Robertson, the deed to the land having been signed by the following: Elizabeth Hurt; Reddick Shelton, wife Anne Shelton; David Shelton, wife Rhody Shelton; Ezekiel Kendrick and jane Kendrick.

Crispin Shelton, Jr., son of Crispin and Letitia Shelton, was born about 1750. There is no information at hand as to a wife or children. This writer has confused him with Crispen, son of Abraham and Chloe Robertson Shelton, his nephew, born about 176l. Crispin. Jr., was named in his father's will which was probated in 1794.

Jane Shelton, daughter of Crispin and Letitia Shelton, was born about 1750. She wed Colonel William Todd on February 2, 1774 in Pittsylvania County, witnessed by her father and by John Gregory. Colonel Todd is said to have been the greatgrandfather of Abraham Lincoln. Jane is in her father's will.

She wed Griffith Dickerson (or Dickinson) in Pittsylvania County October 12, 1785, witnessed by her father and James Aikin. She is a legatee in Crispin's will. She and Griffith had 5 children: Griffith Jr., Vincent, Crispin, John and Milly Shelton Dickerson. Griffith became a Baptist minister after the Revolutionary War. His will was probated in Pittsylvania County on November 30, 1843. There was a professor at Hiwassee College from southwest Virginia in the 1930's named Henry F. Dickenson who is likely a descendant of these Dickersons.

Mary Shelton, daughter of Ralph (4) and Mary Crispin Shelton, was born January 26, 17l6. She died at age 3.

Catherine Shelton, daughter of Ralph (4) and Mary Crispin Shelton, was born January 26, 1719, was christened that year at Christ Church, Middlesex County, Virginia on March 13. She wed George Blakey on December 31, 1743 in Mecklenburg County. Her will, made in Mecklenburg County, named only Patience Caty Blakey, Catherine Shelton is not named in her mother's will, she likely being deceased at the date, August 29, 1771. Her mother, Mary Shelton Clark, does however name Catherine's daughter, Patience Blakey; a note at hand names William Blakey as Catherine's husband.

John Shelton, son of Ralph(4) and Mary Crispin Shelton, was born July 14, 1722 in Middlesex County, Virginia. He wed Elizabeth ____ and moved to Amelia County where he purchased land. He sold the land in 1774 with a deed signed by himself and wife, Elizabeth and moved to Mecklenburg County where his sister Catherine Blakey lived. John made his will November 18, 1777, probated July 13, 1778, Elizabeth having died in the meantime. He signed his will John Shelton, Sr., and named the eldest son Mark as Executor, John Jr. was not named, though his father likely had already provided very liberally for him. John Sr. had in 1749 acquired 269 acres of land on Great Nottaway River from Richard Clark. The next year he deeded 100 acres of this land to his brother Daniel Shelton. This acreage being at Ready Branch and Great Nottaway, witnesses being their brothers, James and Benjamin, and Henry Beuford. John retained the other 169 acres until August 25, 1774 when he deeded that to William Crenshaw. John had gone with his mother Mary and their families to Amelia County in 1745, John then being 23 years of age and presumably having married Elizabeth some years earlier. His mother Mary had remarried after his father Ralph(4) died to Peter Clarke, and her will, which was probated in 1750 in Nottaway Parish, was signed Mary Clarke. John had besides John Jr. and Mark possibly a daughter Elizabeth. After the death of their parents Mark and John went to Pittsylvania County where their father's brothers had settled earlier. The wills of both Mark and John Jr. were made in Pittsylvania County in 1801. They had purchased land there:

He is on record there in 1779 where he and wife deeded land to William Hardy. In the census of 1785 he was listed as head of a family in Pittsylvania County, In his will made May 5, 1801, recorded June 1, 1802, book 11, page 244, he named the following legatees: Richard Shelton, Henry Shelton, Spencer Shelton, John Shelton, George Shelton, William Shelton, Charles Shelton, Nancy Davidson, Rachael Davidson and Franky Wright.

Richard Shelton, son of Mark and Rachael ____ Shelton, was born about 1760_. He married Nancy Shelton in Pittsylvania County on July 6, 1792, witnessed by William Clark, married by Hawkins Landrum. She was the daughter of Thomas and Nancy Shelton.

The following legatees were listed: Wife, Evan Shelton; daughter, Adeline Shelton; sons Nelson and Nathaniel Shelton; daughters Katherine Kent and Clea Riggs; son Armistead Shelton; daughters Saluda Dotson, Rebecca Walker, Martha, and Cassandra and David Grant; Polly Maynard; Ferrily Jane Bradley and Susan Ann. The will mentions a tract of land given him and heirs by their grandfather. There was much land and many slaves. Then there was the will of Nelson V. Shelton, born about l8l2, the elder son, made about 1842. He lists his wife Fanny; grandfather J. M. Shelton (presumably he means grandfather of his legatees); Mary A. Shepherd; Nelson Riggs; Nelson V. S. Carter; Jesse Riggs (as their guardian, property left them by their grandfather, J. M. Shelton; Edward B. Snoddy. A letter at hand from a descendant of Henry Dotson, husband of Saluda Dotson above and son-in-law of John M. Shelton, names his great-great-grandmother as Saluda Shelton Dotson. The letter stated also that Saluda was born in 1800.

George Shelton, son of Mark and Rachael _____________________ Shelton, was

about 1766. He likely married Mary __________________ . A will made in

Pittsylvania County, Virginia on September l6, 1807, listed only "Mary Shelton and Heirs". He is on record in the county as having deeded to Washington Thompson a plot of land on October 17, 1796, and one to John Wilson Sr. on September 17, 1798. George Shelton may have had an earlier marriage. One George Shelton married an Elizabeth Farmer in Pittsylvania County on June 13, 1803. And there is a later will of George Shelton in the county in 1810, probated September l6, l8ll. Here he names wife Mary as Executor, he names son Levi and daughter Anna Shelton and "my young children". The will was witnessed by William White and Jencia Shelton. Levi wed Frances E. Echols on March 1, 1805 and Anna married a James Shelton on August 10, 1807.

William Shelton, son of Mark and Rachael ____ Shelton, was born about 1769. One William Shelton married Pricilla Mustain in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in December, 1798. There was also a marriage of William Shelton to Mary Ann Campbell on June 4, 1807. On November 21, 1799 William is on record as having deeded land to William Word.

Charles Shelton, son of Mark and Rachael ____ Shelton, was

born about 1772. He married Elizabeth Flippen in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on March 17, 1800, witnessed by Joseph Flippen. In his will he mentioned Elizabeth and two younger children.

John Shelton, Jr., son of John and Elizabeth ____ Shelton, was born about 1742. He wed Elizabeth Lawson in Goochland County, Virginia, St. James Parish, on July 30, 1760. After his father’s will was probated in 1778, John Jr. bought land in Pittsylvania County on November 7 that year from Joshua Hudson, a 225 acre tract near his uncles Benjamin and Crispin. Witness to the deed was William Shelton. The 1782 tax list showed John with a family of 10, owning 225 acres and no slaves. In 1785 his family numbered 8, and in 1787 he was taxed again on 225 acres. In 1798 he had 2 tracts — 225 acres and 10 acres. He left a will dated November 26, 1801, proved June 8, 1804, which mentioned 4 sons -- William, Joel, Claiborne and Abraham — and 8 daughters — Jane Lewis, Mary Poore, Frances Shelton, Martha Tucker, Charlotte Shelton, Nancy White, Lucy Hurt and Lettie Shelton.

William Shelton, son of John and Elizabeth Lawson Shelton, was born about 1765. He married Martisha Taylor on October 29, 1786, witnessed by Abraham Shelton.

Joel Shelton, son of John and Elizabeth Lawson Shelton, was born about 176O. He wed Anna Coe on September 23, 1807. There was a Joel Shelton who wed Emily Smith on April 29, 1810. He was among those who fought in the Revolutionary War from Pittsylvania County. He was deeded land in Pittsylvania County by Benjamin Shelton on March 19, 1782, and he in turn deeded land to Crispin Shelton, Jr. November 18, 1786.

Claiborne Shelton. son of John and Elizabeth Lawson Shelton, was born about 1764. He wed Saluda Mustain in Pittsylvania County May l6, 1785, witnessed by Robert Tucker and Thomas Mustain, her father. On September 15, 1800 he and his wife Seludy deeded land to Thomas Simpson. Mr. George Leon Smith in a letter to this scribe in July, 1982 set my record straight as to John Sr. and John Jr. I had assumed that the will of John Jr. was that of his father. Mr. Smith was desirous of documenting Henly Shelton as son of Claiborne and Claiborne’s Revolutionary war record. There is no record at hand to confirm either. On February 19, 1813 he witnessed in Patrick County the marriage of Hudson Shelton to Lucy Murphy. Mr. Smith gave his lineage: Peter Shelton(3), born 1664, who wed Susannah Jackson; Ralph Shelton(4), born l685, who wed Mary Crispin; John Shelton, born 1722, who wed Elizabeth ____;

to Polley Shelton, witnessed by Armistead Shelton. Tunstall

Shelton was the son of Stephen Shelton. He and Fannie Payne

Shelton were both descendants of Crispin Shelton, he being

great-grandson, she being great-great-granddaughter. He was recipient of property from Daniel Shelton by deed September l6, 1793. He was a legatee in the will of Daniel Shelton, proved September 18, 1809, and also in will of Frederick Shelton, proved October 16, 1820.

Martha Shelton, daughter of John and Elizabeth Lawson Shelton, was born about 1764. She wed Robert Tucker on January 1, 1782, witnessed by John Aiken. Robert Tucker witnessed the marriage of Claiborne Shelton, his brother-in-law, to Saluda Mustain on May l6, 1785, with Saluda’s father Thomas Mustain, in Pittsylvania County.

Charlotte Shelton, daughter of John and Elizabeth Lawson Shelton, was born about 1766.

Nancy Shelton, daughter of John and Elizabeth Lawson Shelton, was born about 1775. She married William White in Pittsylvania County on January 13, 1795, witnessed by Armistead Shelton, performed by her brother-in-law, Thomas Payne. He may have had an earlier marriage, as one William White had a daughter Jane who wed William Clark on June 21, 1784, to which William was a witness and to which David Barr performed the ceremony.

Lucy Shelton, daughter of John and Elizabeth Lawson Shelton, was born, was born about 1766. She married West Dandridge Hurt in Pittsylvania County on May 17, 1790, witnessed by Vincent and John Shelton, her father. W. Dandridge was the recipient of property on April l6, 1792 in a deed from William Shelton. In 1792 a jury which investigated the murder of a slave -- one Simon — by slave Watt on Isaac Cole's plantation the jury was comprised of Sheltons and Shelton sons-in-law, including West Dandridge, the exception being William Porter, likely a kinsman.

Lettice Shelton, daughter of John and Elizabeth Lawson Shelton, was born about l767. She wed Abraham Shelton on December 17, 1792, witnessed by Frederick Shelton and John Shelton, father. Abraham was likely the son of Abraham and Chloe Robertson Shelton.

Benjamin Shelton, son of Ralph(4) and Mary Crispin Shelton, was born June 10, 1724 and christened in Middlesex County, Virginia on July 12, 1724. He married Mary, whose last name is not at hand, in Amelia County, Virginia in about 1745. On March 28, 1759 he received a grant of land for 119 acres in Amelia County on South Fork of Little Nottaway River, selling same on November 24, 1763 to his brother James Shelton. The land was on Stone House Branch. Among the witnesses was Daniel Shelton. The land was taxed in the name of James Shelton in Amelia County in 1788 and in Nottaway

County in 1791 and 1796. Benjamin appears the first time in Pitts-ylvania County records in 1772 when he bought considerable acreage from Hugh Innes near Crispin and later John. He evidently moved from Amelia County shortly before that time. He sold 100 acres in Amelia on May 24, 1777 to Joseph Phillips, the land being on North Fork of Nottaway River, that which he had bought of William and Susannah Pace in 1764 soon after selling his 119-acre tract to his brother James. In 1782 the Pittsylvania tax lists show Benjamin Shelton with a family of 7 whites and 8 slaves. That year he sold 200 acres of his land to his nephew Joel Shelton of Amelia County. His land was on the head of Haw Fork of Buck Branch, bounded by lands of Abraham Shelton, Hugh Innes and others. Witnesses to the deed were Vincent Shelton, Beverly Shelton, Young Shelton and Leonard Shelton. In 1785 Ben Shelton's family consisted of eight whites, one of them being Benjamin, Jr., probably his eldest son, heading a household of 5. In 1787 Benjamin, Sr. moved away. On April 13 that year he gave deeds for 170 acres and 400 acres to Leonard Shelton and Vincent Shelton respectively, signing as Benjamin Shelton, Sr., late of Pittsylvania County. He possibly moved to Caswell County, North Carolina, where the census of 1790 showed a Benjamin Shelton, or possibly to Lunenburg County, Virginia. Benjamin and Mary were reported by Z. F. Shelton to have had three children: Benjamin Jr., Leonard and Clever Shelton. There were 5 other children in his household thought to be the children of Benjamin's brother James and wife Jane, taken over by Benjamin and Mary, presumably on the demise of Jane. They were James; Rachael, who wed Aaron Quisenberry; Henrietta, who wed Young Shelton as his first wife, his second being Betsy Lewis who he wed in 1795; Stephen; and Thomas Shelton. Following are the 3 children of Benjamin and Mary:

Benjamin Shelton, Jr., son of Benjamin and Mary ____ Shelton,

was born about 1749. He wed Rebecca Watlington in Halifax County, Virginia on November 6, 1780. They had:

Rachael Shelton, daughter of Benjamin Jr. and Rebecca Wat-lington Shelton, born about 1781, wed Berryman Hatchett on September 3, 1801. She later wed Geter Shelton, a second cousin, son of Willis Shelton.

Leonard Shelton, son of Benjamin and Mary ____ Shelton, was

born about 1751. He wed Susannah Roberts on December 19, 1785, witnessed by Vincent Shelton and Joseph Roberts, her father. On June l6, 1788 he and Susannah deeded property to Avery Mustain in Pittsylvania County, on February 17, 1794 he witnessed the will of Crispin Shelton with Daniel Shelton et al. And on October 20, 1778 he witnessed with Benjamin, Stith Bolling, William Osborne, Jr., and John Finney the deed when Crispin and Letitia Shelton deeded 362 acres to Peter Lamkin.

Clever Shelton, son of Benjamin and Mary ____ Shelton, was born about 1753. In 1820 on September 8, he and Rebecca Shelton made a deed in Jefferson County, Tennessee to Frederick Pulse, a slave. Rebecca presumably being his wife whom he wed in about 1775. Records indicate that he married a Hickman (likely Rebecca Hickman) in Jefferson County, Tennessee. This lady was a sister of William Hickman, who was the paternal great-great-grandfather of David N. (Red) Gray. They had a daughter who wed David Aslinger, moved to Hamilton County. Had sons Clever and Joshua Aslinger.

James Shelton, son of Ralph(4) and Mary Crispin Shelton, was born February 23, 1726. He was the seventh son. He married twice. His first wife was supposedly named Jane — "Jincie", perhaps, one genealogist lists the following as children of James and Jincie: James, Rachael, Henrietta, Stephen and Thomas. These were not named in his will, but there was a William Shelton, whom he named as a son, presumably by Jincie, who was the Executor of his father's will:

William Shelton, son of James and likely Jane Shelton, was born about 1750. He was the Executor of his father's will, which was dated May 11, 1784. No record at hand of wife or children.

James Shelton, son of James and Jane, was born about 1755.

Rachael Shelton, daughter of James and Jane, was born about 1757. She wed Aaron Quisenberry. A note at hand from historian Grover Shelton states that the James Shelton, born 1726, married into the Quisenberry family, so Jane or Jincie may have been a Quisenberry.

Henrietta Shelton, daughter of James and Jane ____ Shelton, was born about 1759. She wed Young Shelton in about 1781. There is a record in Pittsylvania County that shows Young Shelton having wed Betsy Lewis there on February 12, 1795, ceremony performed by Thomas Payne.

Stephen Shelton, son of James and Jane ____ Shelton, born about 176l, is said to have fought in the Revolutionary war. There is no record at hand of marriage or children.

Thomas Shelton, son of James and Jane _____________________ Shelton, born about

1747, wed Nancy Hurt, daughter of Moses Hurt, in Pittsylvania County on January 10, 1785, witnessed by Leroy Shelton, son of Daniel, and by her father, Moses Hurt. Thomas was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Revolution_.

James Shelton's second wife was Philiapinea ____. In his will, dated May 11, 1784, he named her as his wife. He named sons Nathan and James, both under age; daughters Molly, Nancy and Sally; son William as Executor. In 1764 James was shown as tax payer in Lunenburg County, Virginia, was in Pittsylvania County in 1768, the portion of which in 1777 became Henry County. Here he bought 400 acres on Leatherwood and Beaver Creeks from John and Frances Cox. On August 26 that year he was sued by David Caldwell. On August 1, 1772 he received a grant for another 400 acres located on South Fork of Leatherwood near the first tract. This tract is east of Martinsville, present county seat of Henry County, some 25 miles east of Crispin's settlement. James sold this 800-acre holding September 24, 1772 to James Hix, and six months later had another grant of 500 acres nearby on Beaver and Snow Creeks. He was Captain of Henry County militia from 1777 to 1780, from which he resigned in 1780.

Nathan Shelton, son of James and Philiapenia ____ Shelton, was born about 1770. He wed Mary Shelton in Henry County, Virginia on September l6, 1794.

Molly Shelton, dau of James and Philiapenia ____ Shelton, was

born about 1772.

Nancy Shelton, daughter of James and Philiapenia ___ Shelton,

was born about 1776. One Nancy Shelton, whose guardian was Crispin Shelton (probably Crispin, Jr. He would have been Nancy's first cousin), married Philip L Grasty in Pittsylvania County on December 15, 1800, witnessed by Crispin and Robertson Shelton.

Daniel Shelton, eighth and last son of Ralph(4) and Mary Crispin Shelton, was born May 17, 1729 in Middlesex County, Virginia. He was the Executor of the will of Mary Clark, his mother, who had married Peter Clark after Ralph(4) died, the will having been probated in Pittsylvania County on August 29, 1771, this being Daniel's first appearance in the county records. Back in Amelia County Daniel had acquired 100 acres from his brother John Shelton on September 19, 1750, and in 1751 a 40-acre tract in the Fork of Nottaway River from Henry Gaines and wife Ann, the transaction being witnessed by Daniel's brother John. Daniel kept this land until after 1789 when that portion of Amelia County became Nottaway County. In about 1750 he wed Lettice Young. In 1774 he gave a mortgage to Crispin's son Abraham. In 1778 he and Letitia deeded land to one Richard Todd. In 1782 he was shown with a family of 11, owning 400 acres and 9 slaves. In 1785 his family numbered 10. In 1787 he was taxed on 400 acres and in 1798 only 81½ acres. He had deeded the bulk of his lands to his sons Young Shelton, Leroy Shelton and Daniel Shelton, Jr. Daniel was a militia Captain in Pittsylvania County, promoted to Major in 1778. He died in that county in 1809, leaving will dated March 17, 1808, proved September 18, 1809. He named wife Lettice; daughters, Susannah Shelton, Clary Shelton (then deceased), Milly Taylor, Anna Bailey, Sally Paine and Polly Shelton; granddaughter Jane Asqua Shelton; sons Leroy, Young, Daniel and Tunstall; and the children of son William — Leroy, Geter, Polly, Montague, Merrit, Macca, Lifas, Elizabeth and Willie Shelton. Could Geter be Peter, b. about 1798, who wed Madalene Dupuy Watkins of Virginia, ancestor of Ruth Bock, possibly the Geter Shelton named here, son of William, grandson of Daniel? It is noted that Daniel, Sr. and his brother Crispin and Crispin's sons Abraham and Gabriel were members of the Patrick County Committee chosen June l6, 1775. Security for Daniel's will was Henry R. Shelton. Witnesses were John Stone and Abraham Shelton; Executors were Young and Tunstall Shelton.

Susannah Shelton, daughter of Daniel and Lettice Young Shelton, was born about 1750. She wed Armistead Shelton, who was the son of Crispin Shelton, with Daniel's consent, on September 1, 1771, witnessed by Joseph Aikin and David Shelton. See page 292.

Clara Shelton, daughter of Daniel and Lettice Young Shelton, was born about 1752. She wed Spencer Shelton, son of Crispin Shelton about 1771. See page 307 for children.

Millicent (Milly) Shelton, daughter of Daniel and Lettice, was born about 1754. She married Edmund Taylor April 1, 1775 in Pittsylvania County, witnessed by her father and by David Shelton. They had 4 children: Young, Edmund, James and William.

Young Taylor, son of Edmund and Milly Shelton Taylor, was born in 1776. He wed Sarah Poston. Had son James H. Taylor.

Edmund Taylor, son of Edmund and Milly Shelton Taylor, was born in 1778. He wed Jane Poston in North Carolina, had children, Temple C. Taylor, born 1825; and Young A. Taylor, b. 1826, who had several sons including Young and Temple Taylor.
