CHAPTER IV, RODERICK SHELTON(7)

Roderick Shelton(7)is thought to have been born in Amelia County, Virginia about 1750 and to have moved with his father’s family to Halifax County in 1763, the portion of which County be­came progressively Pittsylvania County in 1767, Henry County in 1777 and Patrick County in 1791. Roderick is said to have served in the Continental Army under General George Washington in the Revo­lution, this fact being confirmed in recorded statements by three of Roderick's son David's descendants: First, in 1905, by Roderick's grandson, John Shelton, son of David; second, by William Bud Shelton, great-great-grandson of Roderick, son of John A. and grandson of David's son James in 1951; and by Chapelle Shelton, a minister, also son of John a., and grandson of David's son James, in 1952. These letters are at hand quoted pages 7 and 8, of this book.

Roderick (7) was the son of John Shelton(6) and Susan Hoard Shelton. The first record this writer found of Roderick in Virginia archives was one in Patrick County where, on December 3, 1795, he appeared as Securer for the marriage of Benjamin Johnson and Sally Franklin, the latter perhaps a daughter who earlier had wed a Frank­lin. Roderick's birth was no later than 1754, he having been shown in the census of Buncombe County, North Carolina for 1800 as being over 45 years of age. He had moved to Buncombe County in about 1795. He took his family there and lived out his life in that county, hav­ing died there between l8l5 and 1820. William Bud Shelton of Shelton Laurel told this scribe that Roderick was buried on Shelton Laurel.

Roderick Shelton's father, John Shelton (6), had among his bro­thers two - — Eliphaz and James -- who were Captains in the Henry County militia, James having been appointed in 1777 and having serv­ed until 1780. Eliphaz, appointed in 1779, served until about 1782.

Roderick Shelton probably married in Pittsylvania County, the portion of which in 1791 became Patrick County, in about 1769. Bud Shelton had a record that gives Sarah Briggs as Roderick's wife. Al­though the name of the mother of his son, James (8), is not at hand, it is likely that her first name was Ursula, as one Ursa Shelton is shown in the census of 1820 in Buncombe County, North Carolina as head of the family formerly headed by Roderick Shelton. There is evidence that Ursa was his second wife. There is in the Mormon Libr­ary in Atlanta a record showing him in Patrick County, Virginia as the father of James Shelton born there March 1, 1791, and another showing him in Henry County as the father of Lewis Shelton, born there on September 15, 1785. This record shows his wife Nora as being the mother of James (the name Ursa written by hand could easi­ly have been interpreted as Nora) and Sara Scruggs as being the mother of Lewis (here the name Briggs could have been read as Scruggs). It is possible that both of Roderick's wives were Briggs, sisters perhaps. Following is a quote from Buncombe County, North Carolina Heritage papers: "On July 28, l8l5 he deeded the long bot­tom tract to his son Lewis Shelton and the tract containing the old plantation to his son James Shelton. He must have died between this date and 1820 as his wife or widow Ursula Briggs appeared as Ursa Shelton, head of household, on page 106 of the 1820 census of Bun­combe County, North Carolina." In any case these records in Patrick and Henry Counties, Virginia and that of his witnessing a marriage in Patrick County prove that he was there and tend to confirm that he was the son of John Shelton (6) who brought his family there in 1763.

Records indicate that there were 12 children in Roderick’s (7) family, seven sons and 5 daughters, Probably the first 7 or eight of these were by Sarah Briggs Shelton, whom he wed in about 1770, and the last five or four by Ursula Shelton, whom he wed in about 1790. Following is a likely listing of his children showing the approximate year of birth:

There is  evidence  that Roderick (7)  had a  son Duck Shelton by an Indian girl.   (See page 234.)

The census of Buncombe County, North Carolina where Roderick (7) moved in about 1795 for the year 1800, lists in his household four sons and four daughters. The census includes: Males, 2 un 10, 2, 10 to 16 and 1 over 45; females, 2 un 10, 1, 10 to l6, 1, l6 to 26 and 1, over 45. Probably the 4 older ones had moved out of the household. Martin is shown in that census to have established a homestead, he having 2 children, both girls under 10. Likely David and Armistead as well as the two older daughters were out on their own also.

One Sarah Shelton, thought to be the eldest of Roderick's child­ren by Sarah Briggs, was born about 1775. She may have wed David Norton. He was wed to a Sarah ---in Buncombe County in about 1794 and had 12 children — 8 sons, 4 daughters, the first born about 1795. There were manyintermarriages between David Norton's child­ren and Sheltons, among them sons David, Drury, Peter, William and Hackley.

Martin Shelton, born about 1776 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, eldest son of Roderick and Sarah Briggs Shelton, wed Nancy Willard (or Stanton) about 1789. The location where they lived in Shelton Laurel was called Alleghany, as it was thought then to be in the Alleghany Mountains. Here in his early married life Martin lived in a large hollow tree with his young bride until he had hewn logs and built a cabin on the waters of Little Laurel Creek. In due time the land he had entered became his. Here a large spring still bears his name, the Martin Shelton

Spring. In his later years he bought 719 acres more on Little Laurel. This was during the Civil War. The land sold for one dollar an acre, and he paid for it with corn sold at four dollars a bushel. Martin and Nancy are said to have had 13 children, 5 sons and 8 daughters. He named his two eldest children, daughters Sarah and Ursula, for his mother, Sarah Briggs Shelton, who likely died when he was about 11, and his step­-mother, Ursula Shelton, who raised him from there. His child­-
ren are listed as follows:

Sarah Shelton, daughter of Martin and Nancy Willard Shelton, b. about 1795, wed John Chandler. They had 9 children, 5 sons, 4 daughters: Larkin, Martin, Solomon, Elizabeth, Mary (Polly), Nancy, John, Susannah, and Ezekiel Chandler.

Ursula Shelton, daughter of Martin and Nancy Willard Shelton, was born in 1802. She wed William Ricker first, by whom she had daughter Magdalene Ricker; she wed Peter Norton second, by whom she had 7 children: Sons, George, Jesse, Roderick and Martin; daughters, Rhoda Norton and two others.

Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of Martin and Nancy Willard Shelton, was born about 1807. She wed first Joseph Chandler, by whom she had Nancy, Margaret and Mary Chandler; she wed second John John­son, had Hannah, Martha Jane, Sarah, Salina, Susannah and Aaron.

Solomon Shelton, son of Martin and Nancy Willard Shelton, was born at Shelton Laurel, North Carolina about 1810. He left there early in life for Missouri where in 1838 he married Judith Nichols. They then moved on to Oregon Territory. They had 8 children, two of whom — Nancy and John — were born in Miss­ouri, and six — Eliza, William F., Melinda, James A., Evans and Marie — were born in Oregon Territory.

James Shelton, son of Martin and Nancy Willard Shelton, was born at Shelton Laurel, North Carolina in about 1811. He, too, went to Oregon Territory to seek his fortune.

John Shelton, son of Martin and Nancy Willard Shelton, was born at Shelton Laurel, North Carolina about 1812. He evidently went with his older brothers, Solomon and James, to Oregon Territory. The Territory originally included all of the lands west of the Rocky Mountains and north of the California line to the Canadian border, the present States of Oregon, Washington and Idaho, and the western part of Montana.

Nancy Shelton, daughter of Martin and Nancy Willard Shelton, was born about l8l6. she wed Reuben Lisenbee. They had 9 children: Sons: Alfred, Martin Shelton, Robert, Allison and Charles Lisen­bee; daughters, Caroline, Vianna, Louisa and Harriet Lisenbee. Martin Shelton Lisenbee above, who married Eliza Franklin, daugh­ter of George W. (Rock) Franklin and Elizabeth Bowman, were the progenitors of one Fred Longhurst, a Shelton historian, to whom this writer is indebted for data on the portion of the clan that migrated west.

Martin Shelton, Jr., son of Martin and Nancy Willard Shelton, was born at Shelton Laurel, North Carolina about l8l7. He wed Polly Franklin and had 5 sons and 2 daughters:

Solomon Shelton, son of Martin, Jr. and Polly Franklin Shel­ton, was born about l841 at Shelton Laurel. He wed Alice McCaleb. He served in Civil War in Union Array in Pennsyl­vania.

Shadrack (Shade) Shelton, son of Martin, Jr. and Polly Franklin Shelton, was born at Shelton Laurel in about 1842. He wed Margaret Ancibel Sams. In 1972 this scribe visited the store of one Delmos Cook, born 1921, at the south end of Laurel, whose mother he said was a Shelton Laurel Shelton, that his grandfather was Shade Shelton, and that his grand­father had brother Andy and Frank and that one Martin Shel­ton was their father. Shade and Margaret reportedly had 11 children: Marzilla, Triphonia, Perpiatuie, Martha, Grace, Alonzo, Claudia Bell (born 1886, wed Will Cook), Theney, Siphiney, Mary and Mamie Shelton.

Andy Shelton, son of Martin Jr. and Polly Franklin Shelton, was born about 1844 at Shelton Laurel.

Frank Shelton, son of Martin jr. and Polly Franklin Shelton, was born about 1846 at Shelton Laurel.

Aisley Shelton, daughter of Martin Jr. and Polly Franklin Shelton, was born about l848 at Shelton Laurel. She wed Ephriam Hensley, son of Charles and Rhoda Riddle Hensley.

Arminda Shelton, daughter of Martin Jr. and Polly Franklin Shelton, was born about l850.

Thomas L. Shelton, son of Martin Jr., was born in 1884 at Shelton Laurel. He was likely by a second wife of Martin Jr. as Polly would have been 57 years old, she having been born in 1827. In 1972 this scribe visited him at his home on Duck Mill Branch in Shelton Laurel. He was making a garden at the time. He stated that both his father and grandfather were named Martin Shelton. Martin Shelton Jr. would have been about 67 when Thomas L. was born. With a young wife this could happen. My grandfather, James Shelton (8), at 67, fath­ered twins by my grandmother, Jane Wood Shelton, his third wife, then 24. Thomas L. at 88 appeared hale and hearty enough to have fathered a child himself even at that age.

Rhoda Shelton, daughter of Martin and Nancy Willard Shelton, was born about 1820. She wed David Franklin. They had 10 child­ren, 6 sons, 4 daughters: Francis, Peter, Joseph, George W., Alfred, James, Marinda, Harriet, Temperance and Isabel Franklin.

Roderick Shelton, son of Martin and Nancy Willard Shelton, was born about 1822. He wed Mary Mercer, they evidently having lived out their lives in Madison County, close by Laurel where he was born. He and Mary had 9 children, 6 sons and 3 daughters: Columbus, Franklin M., William G. (Dock), Elizar (jack), Fowler (or Oliver), Meredel, Sarah, Ursula and Martha Shelton.

Martin Shelton supposedly had 3 other daughters not named. They were between John and Nancy, born about 1911, 1912 and 1914.

David Shelton,son of Roderick and Sarah Briggs Shelton, was born in Henry County, Virginia about 1778, He does not show in the census of 1800 in Roderick's family in Buncombe County, North Carolina, he then being about 22 years of age and out on his own, though he doesn't show as the head of a family in the county either in the census of that year. In the census of 1810 he shows in Buncombe County with a family as follows: Males, 1 un 10, 1 l6-26, 1 26-45. and 1 45 up; females, 1 un 10, and 1 26-45. The census of 1820 shows the family as fol­lows: Males, 4 un 10, 1 10-26, 1 26-45; females, 1 un 10, 1 10 to 26, 1 26-45; 2 blacks. For 1830: Males, 3 un 5, 1 10-15, 2 15-20, 2 20-30, and 1 50-60; females, 1 un 5, 2 5-10, 1 20-30, and 1 40-50. The elderly male shown in the 1810 cen­sus at “45 up" was likely a grandparent.

David Shelton lived at Shelton Laurel in Buncombe County, North Carolina and is usually considered to have been the founder of that branch of the Sheltons, although his father Roderick (7) and Roderick's cousin David Shelton were the original property owners there. On a visit to Shelton Laurel in May,1971 this scribe was happy to become acquainted with William Bud Shelton. He owned a nice home there at Alleghany. He was knowledgeable in the history of the Sheltons there. Born in 1896, he was the great-grandson of David, being grand­son of James and son of John A. Shelton. He had a copy of the letter shown page 7 from John Shelton, son of David, grandson of Roderick (7), written in 1905 to one James L. Wilmeth.

William Bud Shelton had long pondered over the distribution of Roderick's sons, particularly of James who had "moved to Tennessee and died there". He had never before had any contact with my branch of the kin, and was as excited as I was at this meeting. He pointed out to me the site of the two-storey house that Roderick (7) is said to have built the only remains of the house then and now being the tall and sturdy stone chimney. The site commands a beautiful view down the valley of Laurel Creek between Bald and Sugar Loaf Mountains. Also the cemetery along the ridge above the site of the house was pointed out to me as the place where Roderick and many of his descendants are buried. A visit to the area again in 1984 disclosed that Will­iam Bud had died, that the cemetery was no longer attended and was overgrown. David and his brothers figured in deed records pertaining to the Shelton Laurel lands. Among these was a con­veyance of 30 acres on Laurel Branch to David Shelton on July 28, 1815 by John Strother, as directed by Roderick Shelton₀ Another, a large conveyance to David was by Alexander Amos on April 12, 1823 for 418 acres on Laurel Creek.

David Shelton married Catherine Miller, born about 1780, over in Tennessee in or about 1796. Census figures for 1830 show that David was between 50 land 60, that Catherine was between 40 and 50, and that there were 14 children:

Genealogist Clay Hensley in his book, The Sheltons, differs con­siderably in his listing of the children or David and Catherine Miller Shelton. He lists 11 children, including a Margaret and a Roderick and omits Thomas and Mandy.

Nancy Shelton, the eldest of the children of David and Catherine Miller Shelton, was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina about 1797. She reportedly married David Metcalf in about l8l6. Heis said to have been ambushed and shot to death while plow­ing corn on Shelton Laurel at the time of the Civil War. I have no record in my files of children of Nancy by David Metcalf. He was likely a brother of James Metcalf who was among those kill­ed by Confederate troops under Colonel Keith in the Shelton Massacre on Shelton Laurel in January 1863. There is record at hand of Nancy’s sister Sarah wed David Metcalf and having had 8 children by him (p 193). Mr. Hensley shows Nancy as having been born in 1807, that she wed William Norton and had 9 children:

David Norton, son of William and Nancy Shelton Norton, was born about 1827. H« married Margaret (Peggy) Johnson, daugh­ter of John and Elizabeth Shelton Johnson.

James Norton, son of William and Nancy Shelton Norton, was
born about 1829. He died in 1853, having wed Susannah ________________________________ .

       William Norton, son of Wm and Nancy Shelton Norton, was born Feb. 24, 1830 in the portion of Yancey County which later be­came a part of Madison County, North Carolina. He wed Judith Gosnell, dau of Joshua and Elizabeth Gosnell, about l846. His 2nd marriage was to Cordelia Cutshall in 19l6 at age 86. She was 19.

Catherine (Katy) Norton, daughter of William and Nancy Shel­ton Norton, was born in 1833. She wed Charles Gunter.

Hackley Norton, son of William and Nancy Shelton Norton, was born about 1837. He married first Mary A. Chandler, daughter of Andrew and Lucinda Gentry Chandler. He wed second to Carcus Griffey and third to Peggy Riddle. He was killed in Civil War at Camp Vance near Morganton, North Carolina.

Robert Norton, son of William and Nancy Shelton Norton, was born about 1841. He married Nancy Matilda Ray in Madison County, North Carolina in l865, daughter of Joseph L and Cassandra Shelton Ray.

Arty Norton, daughter of William and Nancy Shelton Norton, was born about l844. She wed Gabriel Sams, son of Gabriel and Mary Hampton Sams.

Joseph Teter Norton, son of William and Nancy Shelton Norton was born about 1846, died in 1921. He wed Elizabeth C. Ray, daughter of Joseph L and Cassandra Shelton Ray.

Mellnda Norton, daughter of William and Nancy Shelton Norton, born 1850, wed Gabriel Sams, son of Gabriel and Mary.

Isaac Shelton, son of David and Catherine Miller Shelton, was born at Shelton Laurel in Buncombe County, North Caro­lina in about 1799. He wed Rachael Torres in Buncombe County in about 1832, she having been born there in about l8l6. They had several children, both sons and daughters. The record shows that he was jailed during the Civil War in connection with the raid by the unionists on Marshall, North Carolina which resulted in the Shelton Massacre, (See page 208). The census for Buncombe County, North Carolina for 1850 shows 8 children, born 1834 to 1850: Males, 3 un 5, 1 40-50; females, 3 5-10, 1 10-15, 1 15-20 and 1 30-40. Clay Hensley lists the 8 children as follows:

William Shelton, son of Isaac and Rachael Torres Shelton, was born about 1834. He wed Mary Ann Metcalf, daughter of Gabriel and Fannie Jones Metcalf_c

Catherine Shelton, daughter of Isaac and Rachael Torres Shelton, was born about l837. She married David Shelton, son of Eliphaz and Sarah Riddle Shelton.

Jane Shelton, daughter of Isaac and Rachael Torres Shelton, was born about 1838.

David Shelton, son of Isaac and Rachael Torres Shelton, was born about l841, died in 19l6. He wed Caroline Hensley in Madison County, North Carolina, daughter of Amos and Arty Norton Hensley.

Isaac Shelton, son of Isaac and Rachael Torres Shelton, was born about 1848.

Solomon Shelton, son of Isaac and Rachael Torres Shelton, was born about l849. He wed Rachael Shelton, born 1849, daughter of James and Agnes Gosnell Shelton.

Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of Isaac and Rachael Torres Shelton, was born about 1846. She married Jesse Norton in Madison County, North Carolina, son of Peter and Ursley Shelton Norton.

Archibald Shelton, son of Isaac and Rachael Torres Shelton, was born about l853, wed Easter Cordelia Shelton, daughter of Roderick and Eliza Chandley Shelton. He married second Loveny Shelton, daughter of William Gaither and Polly Lawing Shelton.

Thomas Shelton, son of David and Catherine Miller Shelton, was born at Shelton Laurel about 1802. I have no certain record of wife or children of this Thomas Shelton. He is likely the Thomas Shelton shown in the census of 1840 in Polk County, Tennessee, heading a family of eight, including besides him­self and wife, 3 boys and 3 girls; Males, 1 un 5, 2 5-10, and 1 30-40; females, 3 10-15 and 1 30-40. The census of 1850 there shows Thomas as a shoemaker, age 47, born in Virginia. It shows Mary Shelton, his wife, age 30, possibly his second. The census here shows the name as Skelton, though in 1840 it is shown as Shelton, There were only three children in the household in 1850 by the census

Alexander Shelton, son of David and Catherine Miller Shelton, was born at Shelton Laurel, North Carolina in 1804. He wed 4 times, lived to be over 100 years of age, had 30 children. Clay Hensley lists only 23 children.

Alexander Shelton's first wife was Nancy Ball, born about 1806, whom he wed in about l826. By her he had some nine children:

Nancy Shelton, daughter of Alexander and Nancy Ball Shel­ton, was born about 1827. She wed Wesley Hensley, son of Charles and Rhoda Stanton Hensley.

David Shelton, son of Alexander and Nancy Ball Shelton, was born about 1829. He married twice, first to Nancy Norton, daughter of Hackley Norton and Peggy Riddle Norton, and second to Arminda Shelton, daughter of Wm. Riley and Martha Jane Johnson Shelton.

Lida Shelton, daughter of Alexander and Nancy Ball Shel­ton, was born about 1831.

Silas Shelton, son of Alexander and Nancy Ball Shelton, born about 1833, was jailed in Civil War, escaped and was shot while crossing French Broad River. He wed Martha White, daughter of Franklin and Polly        White. He had son David who also was jailed during the war.

Katie Shelton, daughter of Alexander and Nancy Ball Shel­ton, was born about 1835. She married William Shelton Ray, son of Joseph L. and Cassandra Shelton Ray.

Alexander Shelton (little Alex), son of Alexander and Nancy Ball Shelton, was born about 1837.

Nick Shelton, son of Alexander and Nancy Ball Shelton, was born about 1839.

Richard Shelton, son of Alexander and Nancy Ball Shelton, was born about l841.

Rock Shelton, son of Alexander and Nancy Ball Shelton, was born about l843.

Clay Hensley doesn't name Little Alex, Nick, Richard or Rock. He named Peter Shelton, showed the first wife as Rhoda Hall.

Alexander's second wife was Nancy Riddle, born about 1820, whom he wed in about l844. They had some 10 children:

Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of Alexander and Nancy Rid­dle Shelton, was born about l847. She wed Peter Shelton, son of William and Chloe Riddle Shelton.

Chloe Shelton, daughter of Alexander and Nancy Riddle Shelton, was born about l848. She wed Joseph M. Ray, son of Stephen and Nancy Reese Ray.

Cella Shelton, daughter of Alexander and Nancy Riddle Shelton, was born about 1850. She married James Norton, son of John Norton. Clay Hensley writes that Celia wed Armstrong Shelton, born l843, son of Roderick and Eliza Chandley Shelton. A record at hand shows that Celia and James Norton had a son James W. Norton who in turn had a son Waid Norton who was the father of Dickie Norton who married Janice Shelton, this writers niece. Her father was Dave Shelton whose father was Sam Shelton whose father was James Shelton (8), brother of the David Shelton above who sired Alexander Shelton. Janice and Dickie have son, David born 1975 and son Daniel born 1980.

Mandy Shelton, son of Alexander and Nancy Riddle Shelton, was born about l844, likely Emanuel, wed Martha Walker.

Nicholas Shelton, son of Alexander and Nancy Riddle Shel­ton, was born about l852. He married Melinda J. Cody, daughter of Polly Cody by Joseph L. Ray.

Augustus Shelton was the son of Alexander and Nancy Riddle Shel­ton. He married Harriet M. Shelton, daughter of John and Melinda Metcalf Shelton. He was born about 1854.

Merrimon Shelton, son of Alexander and Nancy Riddle Shelton, was born about 1856. He wed Nancy Shelton in 1877.

Palatiah Shelton, son of Alexander and Nancy Riddle Shelton, was born about l856.

William Shelton, son of Alexander and Nancy Riddle Shel­ton, was born about 1857.

Clay Hensley named seven of the 10, naming Augustus and Merrlmon as one and omitting Palatiah and William.

Alexander's third wife was Margaret Hensley, born about l840, daughter of Charles and Rhoda Franklin Hensley. By her he had some 9 children:

Dollie Shelton, daughter of Alexander and Margaret Hensley Shelton, was born about l859. She married Harvey Hensley, son of Matthew and Hannah Johnson Hensley.

was born about l86l. She was married twice, first to Burgess Hensley, son of Beverly and Min­erva Haire Hensley, and second to Hickman Shelton, son of James and Sarah A. Hensley shelton.

Melvina Shelton, daughter of Alexander and Margaret Hensley Shelton, was born about l864, a twin of Elzira. Mel­vina wed a Keller.

Manly Wade Norton has written a history of Madison County, North Carolina entitled The Kingdom of Madison. This is a very interesting and informative treatise. There is in the book an engrossing saga which involved a family of Frank­lins and the James Norton who headed the clan into which Alexander and Nancy Riddle Shelton’s daughter Celia wed. There was further connection between the Sheltons and the Franklins as indicated earlier. Roderick (7) was shown as witnessing the wedding of one Sally Franklin to one Benjamin Johnson, in Patrick County, Virginia in 1795.

The Franklin family saga:

A detachment of Union troops attacked a homestead of Confederate sympathizers. One Nance Franklin, a widow, owned land and a log home in the Shelton Laurel area. She had four sons, Balus, James, George and Josiah Norton, the last named being age 15 in l864. The sons, though not enlisted, often fought alongside the southern soldiers.

Whenever fighting broke out in their area they turned out with rifles. One Colonel Kirk, a Tennessee Unionist and regimental commander, was making raids into Madison County, had in his unit about 60 men from that area. These soldiers were useful in pointing out neighbors who sympathized with the Confederacy. They decided to make an example of the Franklins. They formed for an attack. The widow Franklin called for her sons to grab their weapons and make a fight of it. George was away from home that day. Balus, James and Josiah tumbled out of the house and opened fire on the Blue-coats, hitting some of them. But return volleys fatally wounded Balus and James. Young Josiah scrambled under the cabin. Two of the raiders tried to crawl under after him, and Josiah killed both of them. The others withdrew and held a council. One suggested the obvious,  to set fire to the place.

Nance screamed wildly. She tried time and time again to go to her son's rescue, but each time one of the raiders caught her and shoved her away. One of them fired at her from close range and clipped off a lock of her flying hair. The flames drove Josiah into the open. Somebody smashed in his skull with a gun butt. As the party rode away, Nance stood beside her blazing home with the bodies of her dead boys at her feet and watched them go.

This adventure of war had its aftermath. Over at Mars Hill College nearby, shortly after the end of the war, work was going on in rebuilding the school_. One day when a brick­layer was talking about his war experiences to a group of students, one of them took particular note of what he was saying. The bricklayer had been with Kirk on the raid and told about the battle at the Franklin cabin.

"Usually I can knock a squirrel out of a tree at 75 yards," he declared, "but I took a squirrel aim at that woman al­most close enough to touch her and all I did was to shoot off a piece of her hair. "

The student returned that weekend to his home in Laurel and related what he had heard. James Norton, brother of the widow Franklin, rummaged a five-dollar gold piece from his pocket and offered it to the lad if he would point out the teller of that tale. Back went the pair to Mars Hill. The bricklayer again told his tale. Norton listened to every word and then spoke himself.

"That was my sister you shot the hair off," he informed the story-teller, "and one of her boys was named James after me."

So saying, he ripped out his revolver from his coat and shot the brick-layer through the belly. He died from the wound. James returned to Laurel Valley, was later apprehend­ed and tried for murder at Burnsville, the county seat. Nance Franklin rode a horse the some 25 miles over the mountain to appear in court in his defense. Reportedly her testimony was eloquent, moving the spectators and jury alike. In closing the Judge addressed her:

“Madam, you say you sent your boys out to fight and kill and be killed. Did you bring them up for that sort of thing?”

"I brought them up to be Christians, your honor," was the swift reply. "I told them always to be good boys, and be honest, but I told them something else. “If you've got to die, die fighting like a damn dog with teeth in a throat.’”

The jury deliberated and came back to declare the homicide a justifiable one, and James Norton went free.

 Grover Hudson Shelton, son of Vinnie Shelton, was born October 31, 1915. Grover, a Shelton historian, lived with his wife Elizabeth Horne Shelton in Abingdon, Virginia. Wife and I visited in their home in October,1985, by chance Grover's 70th birthday. They were a lovely couple and it was an enjoy­able visit. Grover passed away January 5, 1987, is buried in the cemetery near his home. He was perhaps the most knowledge­able Shelton of the clan as to the family history, particularly as to the antecedents and descendants of Roderick (7), our mutual ancestor. Our long discussions of our history have res­ulted in my making a number of revisions in this treatise, notably to show John Shelton, born 1732, son of Ralph (5), as the father of Roderick (7), instead of John's brother James, born 1734. We had met earlier with our wives and Colonel Lee Shelton and his wife Yolande of Poulsbo, Washington at Greeneville, Tennessee for a roundtable discussion, Lee himself having been a Shelton genealogist, He developed extensive data on the clan, much of which is contained in this treatise, par­ticularly with the family of Roderick's son Lewis Shelton and his descendants. Lee died at Christmastime in 1985. Grover and this scribe corresponded regularly in an effort to make this history as accurate as possible. It was our mutual desire to pass on to future generations the facts of our heritage. Grover and Beth have son Grover Harrison Shelton and grand­children. A daughter died at an early age.

Rena Kathaleen Wallin, daughter of Jessie Vlnson and Flossie Shelton Wallin, born 19l5, wed Paul Shelton, son of Donna Shelton and Joe Reeves, in about 1938. They live on Shelton Laurel. This scribe, along with wife Virginia, visited in their home in the summer of 1981. We were happy to make her acquaintance and  that of a daughter who lived nearby and a grandson. The Judith Shelton Cemetery is located on a hilltop near Rena’s home. Rena is a Shelton family historian.

Eliphaz Shelton, son of David and Catherine Miller Shelton, was born about l8ll. The name is not uncommon in the family. The earliest Eliphaz noted was David’s great uncle, brother of David's grandfather, John (6). That Eliphaz, born about 1733, was a Captain in the Henry County, Virginia militia. He gave the land for the county seat of the new county, Patrick in., the plot consisting of 18 acres upon which the town of Taylorsville was built, the name having been changed later to Stuart. The name Eliphaz appears among the descendants of Roderick (7). This Eliphaz' brother William above had a son Eliphaz born about 1845. Eliphaz married Sarah Riddle and had 8 children:

David Shelton, son of Eliphaz and Sarah Riddle Shelton, was born about 1833. He married Catherine Shelton, daughter of Issac and Rachael Torres Shelton. .His second marriage was to Eliza Reed Coffee.

Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of Eliphaz and Sarah Riddle Shelton, was born about 1835. She wed Morris Mclntosh.

Jacob Shelton, son of Eliphaz and Sarah Riddle Shelton, was born about 1837. He wed Elizabeth Shelton, daughter of Rod­erick and Eliza Chandley Shelton. He died as a prisoner of  the Confederate Army in 1865 in Jackson, Mississippi.

William R. Shelton, son of Eliphaz and Sarah Riddle Shelton, was born about l842. He was killed in 1863 in the Shelton Massacre by Rebels.- Colonel Keith's raiders.

Molly Shelton, daughter of David and Catherine Miller Shelton, was born about 1822. She wed a Torres, brother of her sister-in-law, Rachael Torres Shelton, Isaac's wife. They reportedly mi­grated to the West, possibly to Kansas or Missouri. There is no record at hand of children.

James Shelton, son of David and Catherine Miller Shelton, was born about l824. He wed Martha Jane (Patsy) McCoy in 1845, who was born in Georgia. James and two of his sons were slain in the Shelton Massacre in January, 1863, They had 8 children:

James Shelton, son of James and Patsy McCoy Shelton, was born in 1846. He was murdered in the Shelton Massacre age 17. He's buried with the 12 others on Shelton Laurel.

David Shelton, son of James and .Patsy McCoy Shelton, was born in 1850. He too was murdered in the Shelton Laurel Massacre, age 13, and buried with the 12 others on Laurel.

Easter Cordelia Shelton, dau of James & Patsy McCoy Shelton, was born about l844.  She wed William Riley Shelton, son of David and Elizabeth Gosnell Shelton.

John A. Shelton, son of James and Patsy McCoy Shelton, was born about I847. He married Sophronia Hensley, daughter of Matthew and Hannah Johnson Hensley. He built a fine home on Shelton Laurel. He ran a general store there. John A. was the eldest surviving son of James. He is likely the one of the original l4 captured who reportedly escaped the massacre by hiding under a bed. He was 16, between the ages of two of his brothers, James 17 and David, 13, who were slain. John A. and a younger brother, Calvin, were raised by their uncle, Captain John Shelton_c John A. and Sophronia had 11 children:

Finetta Jane Shelton, daughter of John A. and Sophronia Hensley Shelton, was born about l876. She wed George Franklin.

Ida Shelton, daughter of John A. and Sophronia Hensley Shelton, was born about 1878. She wed Sylvan Shelton, son of Judith Shelton and Abner Tweed.

James Luther Shelton, son of John A. and Sophronia Hensley Shelton, was born about l88l. He wed first Laura Stewart, second Eliza Chandley, daughter of Howard and Ann Eliza Hensley Chandley.

Hannah Shelton, daughter of John A. and Sophronia Hensley Shelton, was born about 1883. She wed Lonny Henry Chand­ley, son of Milam Chandley and Armstrong Shelton.

Martha Shelton, daughter of John A. and Sophronia Hensley Shelton, was born about l885. She wed Manley Shelton, son of Armstrong and Sarah Carter Shelton.

Chapelle Shelton, son of John A. and Sophronia Hensley Shelton, was born about 1887. He wed three times: first to Hattie Ray, daughter of Amos and Ellender Haire Ray; second to Martha Shelton, daughter of Brownlow and Linda Shelton Shelton; and third to Vera King, daughter of George and Matilda Haire King. A letter at hand from Chapelle Shelton,  a minister, in 1953, is here quoted in part: "....I am 66 years old. My father lived to be 86 years old. He always took time to tell us children about our people. His father's name was James Shelton and James' father was Dave Shelton and Dave's father was Roderick Shelton that fought under George Washington. " Chapelle wrote further that his great-grandfather David, son of Roderick and brother of James, stayed in Buncombe County (now Madison) and founded the Shelton Laurel branch of the family. Chapelle Shelton left Shelton Laurel in about 1917, was living in Greene County. Tennessee in 1952, was well known as a minister. He had 6 children, both sons and daughters, their names not at hand.

Delphia Shelton, daughter of John A. and Sophronia Hensley Shelton, was born about 1890. She wed first Josiah Norton, son of Daniel and Alsie Hensley Norton; second Frank Kindall.

Nevada Shelton, daughter of John A. and Sophronia Hensley Shelton, was born about 1892. She wed Elmer Tweed, son of Sol and Tennessee Tweed Shelton.

William (Bud) Shelton, son of John A. and Sophronia Hensley Shelton, was born in 1896, He wed .Minda Pate in 1916, dau. of Howell and Mary Shelton Pate. Bud lived out his life on Shelton Laurel. He died about 1980. Mrs .A. Paul and I visited in his home in 1972. He was a gracious host and we enjoyed our visit with him and Minda. Bud confirmed that his grandfather James Shelton was slain in the Shelton Massacre, that Bud's father John A. Shelton, as a young boy, had assisted in retrieving the bodies of the victims and in burying them in the cemetery at Laurel. Of the 14. originally captured and confined over night in the two-storey house, 13 were executed, one reportedly having escaped by hiding under a bed, this likely having  been John A., then l6. Bud and Minda had a daughter:

Violet Shelton, daughter of James and Martha Jane McCoy Shel­ton, was born about 1858.

Calvin Shelton, youngest of the children of James and Martha Jane McCoy Shelton, was born about l86l. He wed first Mar­garet Shelton, daughter of William and Mary Ann Metcalf Shelton. He married second Frances C. Shelton, daughter of Mandy and Martha Walker Shelton. Calvin had 6 children:

Lula (Sudie) Shelton, daughter of Calvin and Margaret Shelton Shelton, was born about 1888. she wed Melvin Shelton, a minister in the church of God, son of William H. and Lavada Shelton Shelton.

Minnie Shelton, daughter of Calvin and Margaret Shelton Shelton, was born about 1891. She wed Back Estep.

Delia Shelton, daughter of Calvin and Margaret Shelton Shelton, was born about 1895.

Calvin Shelton and his brother John A., whose father James was killed in the Shelton Massacre, were raised by their uncle , Captain John Shelton. Calvin's son Daniel above reportedly went to Kansas and took with him two sons, Decatur and Dolphus, probably the eldest children.

Catherine Shelton, daughter of James and Martha Jane McCoy Shelton, was born about 1863. She wed Hickman Hensley. They had three children:

Violet Hensley, daughter of Hickman and Catherine Shelton Hensley, was born about 1886.

Granville Hensley, son of Hickman and Catherine Shelton Hensley, was born about 1890.

Captain John Shelton, son of David and Catherine Miller Shelton, was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina in 1828. He served 2 years in the Union Army in the Civil War, became Captain. Will­iam Bud Shelton, grandson of Captain John's brother James, wrote in a letter of having seen his great uncle on the occasion of the old Captain riding his horse up to John A. Shelton's store and on the horse with him was a young son. This must have been about 1800 when John was 72 years old. William Bud was born in 1896. The Captain was married twice, first to Malinda Metcalf in 1847, and second to Artie Margaret Edwards in 1893. Besides having many children of his own, he is said to have raised John A. and Calvin Shelton, sons of John's brother James who was killed in the Shel­ton Massacre.

On page 7 is a letter from John Shelton of Alleghany,. North Carolina to James L. Wilmeth in Philadelphia, written on July 6, 1905 which lists the sons of Roderick (7), John's grandfather. A second letter from him on August 15 that year in reply to one from Wilmeth follows:

"I seat myself to answer yours of the 24. of July. I am not well, taking medicine every day, balance of my family well as common and I truly hope these few lines will come safe

to hand and will find you and your family all well. You wanted to know something more about my Grandfather Roderick Shelton, my fath­er told me that he was a soldier for the old stars and stripes under George Washington, the father of our country, and fought for our liberty. I will give you a short history of myself. I was born In 1828 and married in l847, raised a family of ten children, five boys and five girls, all married, then my wife died and left me alone and I married again, my last wife had four boys, the baby one is 5 years old. I have belonged to the church about twenty years, have been trying to preach the gos­pel for about 15 years.

"P.S. I will say something more about myself. I was about 35 years old when the Civil War came upon us, and a Union man, and lived on what is called Shelton Laurel, which Rebels call­ed No Torys, because I did not want to fight for the Confeder­acy, they run the conscript so hard, I had to leave home, I went into the Union Army, served two years lacking fourteen days, and was honorably discharged at Knoxville, Tennessee. The government pays me $12. 00 per month. "

In his old age Captain John lived with Calvin. Chapelle Shel­ton, son of John A., in a letter he wrote in 1952, stated that after Captain John got old he visited him frequently and enjoyed listening to him and John A. talk about their forebears, where they came from and where the various generations moved  to. John Shelton had by his first wife, Malinda Metcalf, ten children, five sons and five daughters. Sons: William Gaither, Levi, Grant, John and James; daughters: Malinda, Harriet, Lovada, Finette and one other. By his second wife, Artie Margaret Edwards, whom he wed in 1893, he had 4 sons, the youngest born in 1900. Captain John died after 1905 at about 80. Clay Hensley in his book The Sheltons lists only 4 of John's children:

Levi (Bud) Shelton, son of John and Malinda Metcalf Shelton, was born about l85l. He wed Arminda Shelton, daughter of William Riley and Martha Jane Johnson Shelton. He wed second Rhoda Higgins, daughter of James Erwin and Sarah J. Shelton Higgins. He wed third Ursula _. Levi was said to have had seven children:

Mary Shelton, daughter of Levi & Arminda  SheIton Shelton, was born about 1874. She wed Howell Pate.

Mandy Shelton, son of David and Catherine Miller Shelton, was born about l826 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. His name was likely Emanuel — Mandy for short. This son of David and Cather­ine is not listed by Clay Hensley in his book The Shelton’s. There is not at hand the name of a wife or mention of children.

Margaret (Peggy) Shelton, listed by Clay Hensley as a daughter of David and Catherine Miller Shelton, born about l8l8, was said to have wed Hackley Norton and had the following 2 children:

Nancy Norton, daughter of Hackley and Peggy Shelton Norton, was born about 1832. She wed first David Shelton son of Alex­ander and Nancy Riddle Shelton; wed second John Norton.

Judith Shelton, daughter of David and Catherine Miller Shelton was born July 22, 1831. She is said to have died on August 27, 1911. Judith's marker, however, in the cemetery atop the hill in Shelton Laurel above

the home of Paul and Rena Shelton, shows the dates as born 1833 and died 1910. On a visit to the home there in August 1984, Rena showed us a photograph of a group centered around an elderly lady whom Rena said was Judith Shel­ton. The other people in the group, as I remember, were a daugh­ter of Judith and the daughter's family, and a young lad not of the
immediate family. On writing to Colonel Lee Shelton of Poulsbo, Washington a great-grandson of Judith, anent this visit, he replied that he was anxious to get a copy of the pic­ture, that Judy was his great-grandmother and that the others in the picture were likely his Aunt Martha Jane Shelton Haynie and Uncle Solomon Shelton and their families. He stated that he had the record of Judith's birth as July 22, 1831. He stated that two of his father's brothers had visited there in 1950 that regrettably his father never had. Lee had himself with wife Yolande visited in the home of Charles and Lena Shelton on Laurel in 1977. Judith had 7 children by Sol Chandley, who was born about 1830:

He and I have corresponded with each other and with Grover Shelton of Abingdon, Virginia, ano­ther Shelton genealogist anent our Shelton heritage, and the three of us with our wives met in the sum­mer of 1985 at a place in Greeneville, Tennessee, and had a round-table discussion. Both lee and Grover are fine gentlemen, a credit to the clan. At this writing Lee is ill at a hospital near his home. He is retired from the U. S. Air Force and has been act­ive in the annual reunions of his World War II bomb­er group, (sadly, Lee died in April, 1986.)

made government brandy. Abner Tweed, son of Jimmy and Rachel Tweed, was born in Yancey County, Virginia at Shelton Laurel in 1825. He had a brother Reuben, born about 1818, who married Caroline Shelton. Abner married Jane Pennar, daughter of Hugh and Isabel Tweed Pennar, at Big Laurel on June 26, l852 by the Reverend Stephen Wallin. Their Children were:

Jerusa Tweed, daughter of Abner and Jane Pennar Tweed, born 1855, who wed King Gilbert.

The Shelton Massacre story may be appropriate here in this place in a book on the clan, as it bore so grossly on the David Shelton line branch of the descendants of Roderick(7). Following is a brief report on the circumstances leading up to and of the actual event, which took place at Shelton Laurel in Madison County, North Carolina on January 19, 1863.

Early in the year 1862 a Union Colonel by the name of David Fry from Greene County, Tennessee recruited men from Shelton Laurel and burned bridges and confiscated money, weapons and provisions from the Confederate population. They endeavored to get to Union lines in Kentucky but were captured and taken to Atlanta for imprisonment.

In April, 1862 a detachment of the Confederate Army's 43^rd Ten­nessee Regiment under Lieutenant Colonel Key moved from Greeneville into the mountains toward Shelton Laurel bent toward inflicting punishment on the Unionists responsible for the raids on Confeder­ates. Their incursion was somewhat successful, resulting in 15 Unionists dead, though the Rebels were fired upon by snipers from hiding. A large Confederate force of state militia headed by Gener­al Marcus Irving was successful in moving through the area captur­ing 30 ring leaders and apprising the people of the advantages of joining the Confederacy. Shortly thereafter the Confederate govern­ment passed a new draft law, which called for all able-bodied men, except those in certain professions, to enlist.

The general scarcity of salt and other supplies was a deprivat­ion all over. In the valley of Laurel this became a cruel one.

Early in January in 1863, reports that organized bands of men were terrorizing the area in Madison County caused a force of 200 men of the Confederate force stationed in East Tennessee

under the command of Colonel William H. Thomas, known as Thomas' Legion, to be ordered into the area. The people of Shelton Laurel since the first months of the war had been sympathetic with the Union. When in January that year a band of men raided Marshall, the county seat, reportedly to get salt, which commodity was being withheld from the unionists by the merchants at Marshall, the raiders broke into several stores and took what they wanted. They also pillaged the home of Confederate Colonel L.M. Allen. On hearing of this raid, Governor Vance of North Carolina appealed to Colonel Thomas for military aid, and a detachment was sent to Shelton Laurel under the command of Lieutenant Colonel J.A. Keith from the 64th Confederate Regiment of Brigadier General Henry Heth's command stationed at Bristol, Tennessee, Keith being a native of Marshall. The detachment was accompanied by suspended Colonel L. M. Allen, Colonel Keith was reportedly under orders from General Heth that the men responsible be captured and everyone of them be killed. In their approach, they met token resistance at first. Then reportedly at one Bill Shelton’s place they encountered a force of about 50 who were driven off after a sharp skirmish wherein 6 defenders were killed. With Keith commanding, the 64th fanned out into the valley and captured fifteen, mostly old men and young boys, and had them shot, although there was no proof that the men captured were in any way responsible or involved in the raid on Marshall. Following is a letter from one A. S. Marrimon, emissary sent to the area by Governor Vance, detailing what happened:

 

Asheville, North Carolina February 24,1863

Hon. Zebulon V. Vance

Governor: In obedience to your direction to do so, I have made inquiries and gathered facts such as I could in reference to the shooting of certain prisoners in Laurel Creek in Madison County, I have to report to you that I have learned that the militia troops had nothing to do with what was done at Laurel. Thirteen prisoners, at least, were killed by order of Lieutenant Colonel J. A. Keith. Most of men were taken at their homes, and none of them made resistance when taken; perhaps some of them ran. (15 were originally reported captured,) After they were taken prison­ers the soldiers took them off to a secluded place, made them kneel down, and shot them. They were buried in a trench dug for that purpose. Some two weeks since their bodies were taken to a graveyard. I learned that probably eight of the thirteen killed were not in the company that robbed Marshall and other places, I suppose they were shot on suspicion. I cannot learn the names of the soldiers who shot them. Some of them shrank from the barbar­ous and brutal transaction at first, but they were compelled to act. This is a list of the names of those killed:

the next Monday. Several women were severely whipped and ropes                                                                                        

were tied around their necks. It is said that Colonel L. M. Allen was not in command and that Keith commanded. Four prisoners are now in Jail, sent here, as I learned, by order of General Davis. They were Sipus Shelton (see note 6), Isaac Shelton, William Morton (possibly Norton), and David Shelton, son of Sipus. I think the facts stated are about true. One thing is certain, thirteen prisoners were shot without trial or any hearing what­ever and in the most cruel manner. I have no means of compelling witnesses to disclose facts to me, and I do not know that I shall be able to make a fuller report to Your Excellency at an early date. I hope that these facts will enable you to take such steps as will result in a more satisfactory development of the true state of the matter. I am, &c, yours truly,

The Governor requested an official investigation. Colonel Keith was allowed to resign his commission but only on the grounds of incompetence. He fled to Arkansas and was later apprehended by civilian officials. He was jailed for some two years but was finally freed when a state law was passed which granted amnesty to such offenders. Neither Colonel Allen nor General Heth were ever brought to trial.

On a recent visit to this area, this writer and wife had the opportunity of seeing the graves of the victims of the mass­acre. Our guide was William Bud Shelton, grandson of the James Shelton above, shown as old Jim, about 56 years old. William Bud Shelton and his brother, Chapelle Shelton, have recently placed a headstone at the graves with the names shown as above. The graves are in the Shelton cemetery which runs for some 100 yards along the top of a low ridge overlooking the site of the original home of Roderick(7). William stated that Roderick(7) and his son David and many others of the Shelton kin are buried there. The graves are all marked with field stones, but, except for the ones slain in the massacre, they have neither names nor dates, so that one could not discern the exact burial spot of any save those who were victims of the massacre, William Bud related that it was his own father, John A. Shelton, and his father's uncle who removed the bodies from the trench where they were first thrown and cov-

ered with leaves and debris and brought them to the cemetery for proper burial. His father had placed a white picket fence around the graves, anchored by a tree. The tree has long since disappeared, but the stump of the tree still remains beside the graves. Bud indicated that the men of the 15 shown as "des­perate" men were in the area at the time hiding, supposedly to avoid conscription by the confederate Government. He said that his own grandmother, of whom he had the faintest recollection, was one of the women who he had a rope tied around her neck and threatened by the soldiers with hanging to force them to disclose the whereabouts of the people guilty of the raid on Marshall. William Bud stated that few if any of the people slain had anything to do with the raid. Besides the 13 locals killed there were reportedly 20 other Unionists captured and imprisoned and later tried in military tribunals.

 

One Eliza Shelton, thought to be a daughter of Roderick(7) and Sarah Briggs Shelton, was likely born in Henry County, Virginia in about 1779, it being the portion of that county which became Patrick county in 1791. Then in about 1795 the family moved to Madison County, North Carolina, she wed Colbert Hensley, had heirs, among whom were at least 4 sons, Charles, Hickman, John and Amos:

I have no certain record at hand on the descendants-of the other 3 sons of Colbert and Eliza Shelton Hensley — Hickman, John and Amos. It is noted that one Hickman Hensley, likely an uncle, brother of Colbert, witnessed a deed to land in Buncombe County on Long Branch of Big Bald Mountain Creek in l804, which was part of the John Gray Blount tract, made by one Bennett Williams to Colbert Hensley.

Armistead Shelton, son of Roderick(7) and Sarah Briggs Shelton, was born in Henry County, Virginia in about 1782, the portion of which in 1791 became Patrick County. He moved with his father's family to Buncombe County, North Carolina in about 1795 the area now Shelton Laurel in Madison County, North Carolina. The census for 1810 in Buncombe County shows the following in Armistead's household: Males, 1 un 10 and 1 l6-26; females, 2 un 10 and 1 26-45. I do not find him later in the North Carolina census. Born in Henry County, Virginia, he moved first to Buncombe County, North Carolina and eventually to Clay County, Kentucky. He wed and raised a family in Buncombe County, supposedly having gone over to Greeneville in Green County, Tennessee and wed Elizabeth       in about 1803. Buncombe County Heritage papers, Article 571, list two sons of Armistead and Elizabeth, Azariah Shelton, born about 1814, and his brother Roderick (Stob Rod) Shelton, born about 1811. Both killed in the Shelton Massacre at Shelton Laurel in January, 1863. The two daughters shown in the census are not identified in the data at hand.

In the censuses of 1850 and l870 for McMinn County, Tennessee there is listed an Elizabeth Shelton, presumably a widow, shown to have been born in 1783, living in the proximity of the home of Armistead’s broth­er, James Shelton(8), there being in the household also another Eliza­beth Shelton, born 1826, presumably a daughter and in the 1850 listing a Martha Shelton, born 1829. It is possible that this is Armistead's Elizabeth and two of their daughters. An Armstrong G. Shelton was found in Greene County in l820, he having recorded a deed there of 70 acres from John McAmish in l826. He wed Catherine Harrison there on January 10, 1822. This Armstrong Shelton, confused in my earlier writings as Armistead, son of Roderick (7), was likely the son of the Roderick born about 1811 and his wife Eliza Chandley Shelton. No Shelton’s were found in the 1850 census records in Greene County. Armstrong and Catherine Harrison Shelton had 3 children by the census of 1810. Armistead was a common name in the family for many generations. Crispin's son Armistead born about 1748, was an Ensign in the Revolution. Note: Clay Hensley in his book, The Shelton’s, shows that Azariah above was the son of David's son Eliphaz. Armistead's sons killed in the war were likely Rod & David.

Lewis Shelton, son of Roderick(7) and Sarah Briggs Shelton, was born in Henry County, Virginia, the portion of which in 1791 became Patrick County, on September 15, 1785. He wed Nancy Gladden in Greene County, Tennessee on January 28, 1811. Nancy was born January 14, 1797 was the daughter of Jarrett Gladden. Lewis died on January 28, 1847 at Whitesville, Andrew County, Missouri, reportedly of yellow fever, he having gone there in about 1820. Nancy died in Yamhill County, Oregon on June l6, 1866. They had at least 13 children, five of whom were born in North Carolina and the remainder in Missouri: David, Elizabeth, Levi, Tillman Eliza, Elijah, William, Polly Ann (Mary Ann), Cynthia, Rice Bullard D., James, John and Martin.

Lewis and Nancy left on their trek west with 5 or 6 small children, the eldest being David, 8, and the youngest Eliza, about 1. Martin Shelton, listed last above, was probably the first born in Missouri, likely enroute prior to arrival at their destination, an area near St. Joseph Missouri, which became Clay County in 1822. The counties of Clinton, Buchanan, Platte, Andrew (with the Platte purchase), were all carved from the territory at a later date, Clinton County apparently from Clay in about 1830. The other 7 children were born in the area, which became Clinton County. The 13 children on record are as follows:

David Shelton, son of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton, was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina on September 15. 1812 (his father's 27th birthday). He wed Frances Wilson May 10, 1837 daughter

of David and Joycie Sears Wilson, born March l6, 1817 in Whittley County, Kentucky, her widowed mother having moved to Missouri in 1835. Prances Wilson Shelton died on April 15, 1887, David on February 15, 1897, both in Shelton, Washington. Following their marriage David and Frances lived in Missouri for 10 years prior to the Oregon migration. Five children were born in Missouri, 3 of whom died in infancy. David was a carpenter by trade. He fought with U. S. troops against Indians led by Black Hawk in 1832 and against the Mormons in 1833 in the war to drive them out of Missouri, on May 10, l847 he set out with his family and enterprising neighbors on the hazardous Journey across plains on the Oregon Trail with nine covered wagons for Oregon Territory, arriving at Fort Vancouver on November 21, that year, placing his wife and two sons along with seed, farming tools and other belongings in a wagon pulled by oxen, he set out toward the western ocean. See p 406-407 f/family photo on the westward trek.

Their wagon train was constantly harassed by hostile Indians, but they were able to continue their Journey, though the savages took some of their livestock and supplies. On one occasion on the trail they came upon the camp of a family whose wagon had broken down. Leaving a woman and some small children stranded, the father had gone on to seek his fortune without them. David repaired their wagon, lent them an ox and took them on with him. On October 1, 1847 they passed the mission camp of Whitman Mar­cus, American missionary and pioneer, at Walla Walla, Oregon. Six weeks later, Whitman, his wife and 12 companions were mass­acred by Cayuse Indians, David and company arrived at Fort Van­couver on November 21, 1847.

A history of the town of Shelton, Washington written by local historians in 1940, furnished me by Colonel Lee Shelton of Poulsbo, Washington, relates in interesting detail the saga of David Shelton's trek west and the eventual settlement by them of the area which was to be named Shelton in David's honor. This scribe will relate only in summary what is told of David, as his history and progeny would fill a volume almost as large as this treatise is intended to become. In l848, David and his com­panions moved to Sawes Island at the mouth of Willamette River. In l849 they mined for gold in California. In 1850 David estab­lished a claim of 350 acres in the area now known as East Port­land. In the summer of 1852 he was on the Oregon Trail again to meet his mother, six brothers and a sister. Colonel Lee Shelton, himself a historian of the clan, has talked with a grandson of David, one Engle "Jack" Shelton, now 94 years of age, which remem­bered his great uncles and was able to relate interesting facts about them.

In 1852, David and companions and their families, on hearing of new lands and new riches in the Puget Sound area chartered and outfitted a Columbia River schooner for an exploratory cruise north along the pacific coast and eastward through the Guan de Fuca Strait into Puget Sound. They sailed down the treacherous Columbia River approximately 150 miles to the ocean, thence north along the pacific coast some 250 miles to Cape Flattery, around the cape into the strait, then on southeastward and south into Puget Sound to head of Big Skookum Bay, another 250 miles to a point on the bay. Here on April 15, 1853 they disembarked

and settled, the settlement in time being named Shelton, Wash­ington, in honor of David Shelton, now a thriving city of some 8000 population. Here David in 1855 took up 640 acres of land. That year and in l856 he and his family took refuge in Port Collins, the Indians on the war-path over the loss of their homelands and hunting areas to the white man. David became a leader in politics and religion, becoming a member of the first two Territorial Legislatures and in achieving renown in other fields. He is said to have been the first Mayor of Shelton and in time School Superintendent. He was staunch in his religious beliefs to the point of being considered by some as radical. David and Frances had 10 children. Three of these died in in­fancy. The remaining seven are listed here. The first two were born in Missouri, the other 5 in Washington and Oregon Territor­ies:

Lewis David Wilson Shelton, son of David and Frances Wilson Shelton, was born in St. Joseph, Clay/Clinton Co., Miss­ouri in 1841. He married Lydia Morris in Snohomish City, Washington in 1888. Lewis D. Wilson died in 1920. They had:

Morris Shelton, son of Lewis and Lydia Morris Shelton, was born in Washington State in 1889.

John Speed Wilson Shelton, son of David and Prances Wilson Shelton, was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on March 14,1843. He married Sarah Mason Calcutt in Coupeville, Whidbey Island, on Puget Sound in 1880. Sarah, born in New York, died in Shelton, Washington on April 29, 1906. John S. W. and Sarah had:

Joyce Florence Shelton, daughter of John S. W. and Sarah Calcutt Shelton, was born about 1885.

Engle "Jack" Shelton, son of John S. W. and Sarah Calcutt Shelton, was born in 1891. In 1985 he was living in Stan-wood, Camano Island, Washington, age 94.

Levi Tillman Shelton, son of David and Frances Wilson Shelton, was born in Yamhill, County, Oregon Territory on July 18, 1849. He married Susan Price in 1882, born in Nebraska; his second marriage was to Mary Elizabeth Asbury Levi had:

Florence Zuella Shelton, daughter of Levi Tillman and Susan Price Shelton, was born about 1885.

Mary Eliza Shelton, daughter of David and Frances Wilson Shelton, was born in Yamhill County, Oregon Territory in 1850. She wed Howard Cyphert of Pennsylvania in Shelton, Washington in 1888. They ostensibly lived out their lives in Shelton, Washington. They had 2 daughters:

Vesta Cyphert, daughter of Howard and Mary Eliza Shelton Cyphert, was born about 1890. She died before she was 35.

Hypathia Constance Cyphert, daughter of Howard and Eliza Shelton Cyphert, was born about 1892. She wed a Haupt. They continued to reside in Shelton.

James Buchanan Shelton, son of David and Frances Wilson Shelton, was born in Shelton, Washington on June 17, 1855. He married Maria Moffatt in 1896. It is interesting to note how James Buchanan Shelton came by his name. He was born during the Indian War period in 1855, gained his name through the visit of the first census taker who found the baby yet unnamed and christened him James Buchanan, the then candidate for president on the Democratic ticket, who was elected and became president of The United States in 1856. Earlier as Secretary of State Buchanan had been in­strumental in settling the boundary line between Oregon Territory and Canada. James Buchanan Shelton died in Shel­ton, Washington on November 30, 1937. He and Maria had:

Lenore Shelton, daughter of James B. and Maria Moffatt Shelton, was born April 15, 1897.

Franklin Pierce Shelton, son of David and Frances Wilson Shelton, was born in Washington Territory on December 12, 1852. There is no record at hand of a marriage or children of Franklin Pierce Shelton. He was named for the president whom Buchanan succeeded and who had also been instrumental in developing the West, Pierce was also a Democrat. Frank­lin Pierce Shelton died of Typhoid Fever in Olympia, Thurs-ton County, Washington Territory on November 24, 1875.

Joyce Adaline Shelton, daughter of David and Frances Wilson Shelton, was born in Shelton_, Thurston County, Washington Territory on September 21, 1857. She wed Patrick Hawley Monson in San Francisco, California on November 23, 1882.

Elizabeth C. Shelton, daughter of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shel ton, was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina on June 27, 1814. She wed Harrison Standley on March 1, 1836 in Missouri. They migrated to California in 1853 and settled in Mendocino County. It is noted that Elizabeth's brother David, who had come West earlier, returned by the Oregon Trail to meet his mother, 6 brothers and a sister in the summer of l852, this Elizabeth likely being the sister referred to, who having con­tinued westward into Oregon, turned southward into California instead of North into Washington Territory as David did. Elizabeth wed and had children. There is not at hand the name of the children of Elizabeth and Harrison, but they have descend­ants in California, one Nancy Standley Sauers is a great-grand daughter. Her nephew, James Knox Polk Shelton, son of her brother William, wrote a history of Mendocino County, listing Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton as parents of Elizabeth, David and William. Elizabeth died on June 4, 1909.

Levi B. Shelton, son of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton, was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina on April 27, 1817. He was twin of Tillman. He reportedly married Christena Rhodes on August 30, 1838 in Missouri. Then on December 1, 1847, he wed Polly Henshaw. There is no record at hand of children of Levi. He likely remained in Missouri. He died August 11, 1878. There was a Tillman Shelton, born 1842, shown in the census of 1850 as living in the home of the widow, Nancy Gladden Shelton, who was probably the son of Levi Shelton by his first wife Chris­tena Rhodes, who he wed in 1838 and who presumably died about 1846.

Tillman Shelton, son of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton, was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina on April 27, 1817, twin of Levi. He probably married Eveline Jones. He migrated to Washington Territory and settled near Steilacoom, Pierce County in 1852/53, likely having gone north from Oregon to Washington with David. Engle "Jack" Shelton, Tillman's grand

nephew, being the son of David's son John S. W. Shelton, stated that Tillman had at least two sons, Martin and Levi and likely others, Jack Shelton who resides in Stanwood, Camano Island, Washington, who at 94 has some difficulty with memory, related the following data to Colonel Lee Shelton on his six brothers who migrated west. He said that one of his uncles lived up near the Canadian border near Lynden in Waskom County. Another was a lawman near Seattle somewhere, one lived south of Portland, Oregon, one settled near Bucoda, Thurston County; another lived near Steilacoom in Pierce County (Tillman). Lee suggested the likelihood of Jack having in some instances confused uncles with great uncles. Tillman's children by Eveline Jones were: Nancy, born 1841; Martin B., born l846; and Levi, born 1848. Eveline died in about l849, and Tillman married the second time, this wife being Elizabeth Rodes of Illinois, born 1822, which he wed in 1850. Tillman's son Levi was living in Tacoma, Washington in the late l800's. a Shelton cousin wrote: "Levi Shelton, a son of Uncle Till, lives in Tacoma, we visited him on Monday. We took the steamer Messenger for Shelton's Point arriving at about dark." Tillman and the other three account for four of the six brothers who reportedly migrated west to join David on the Oregon Trail. Two others, likely William and Martin, are said to have also migrated to the Pacific states. Tillman died on December 17, 1901.

Eliza Shelton, daughter of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton, was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina on April 1, 1819. She wed John Tippence Bailey on November 15, 1847, in Andrew County, Missouri. They reportedly remained in Missouri. John Tippence was born in Kentucky on November 13, l824. He died in Whitesville, Andrew County, Missouri July 15, 1904. Eliza died in Whitesville on November 19, 1906. They had 8 children:

Carr Bailey, son of John Tippence and Eliza Shelton Bailey, Was born January 14, 1850, migrated to Pocatello, Idaho, died in November 1934.

Jermima Alice Bailey, daughter of John Tippence and Eliza Shelton Bailey, was born May 9, l85l, died April 25, 1939. Wed James Ferguson Smith on February 27, 1870.

David Shelton Bailey, son of John Tippence and Eliza Shelton Bailey, was born March 19, 1853, moved to Idaho, having wed Jane Butler.

Edward Spottswood Bailey, son of John Tippence and Eliza Shelton Bailey, was born July 25, 1855, died January 4, 1886, having wed Virginia Galloway on September 9, l877.

Nancy Jane Bailey, daughter of John Tippence and Eliza Shel­ton Bailey, was born January 27, 1857, died October 7, l859.

Apparently some of Eliza’s children went west and settled in Washington Territory at a later date. There were Baileys and Smiths as well as Sheltons in the vicinity of Shelton, Wash­ington. A letter in the hands of Margaret S. Wilson Harvey, written in 1888, presumably from a daughter of Eliza, has this quote: "Mother, you need not trouble yourself about us taking up Uncle David's views. His views are worse than idolatry to me." Reportedly some of the Sheltons who went west became Mor­mons. The Mrs. Harvey above, of St. Louis, Missouri, a Shelton historian, is a great-granddaughter of Jermima Alice Bailey Smith. Mrs. Harvey's great aunt, Ona smith, owns a rocker, a bed and a dresser that belonged to Eliza. She noted that Eliza smoked a pipe and that there are scratches on the bottom of the chair seat where matches have been struck.

Martin Shelton, son of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton, was born in Salina County, Missouri on October 7, 1820. He is said to have married Jane Groom on March 10, l842. He likely was born while Lewis and Family were enroute from Buncombe County, North Carolina to Missouri, Salina County being several miles east of Clay County. Martin died in 1896.

William Shelton, son of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton, was born in Clay/Clinton County, Missouri on September 10, 1823. (Likely 1822, as he had a sister, Polly Ann, born May 9, l824) William married twice, first to Mary Elizabeth Means, born in Clay County, Missouri in 1825, on September 7, 1841. They had 3 children, all born in Andrew County, Missouri:

Susannah R. Shelton, daughter of William and Mary Means Shelton, was born in Andrews County, Missouri in September 1842. She wed Joseph Gurley on December 13, 1860.

James Knox Polk Shelton, son of William and Mary Means Shelton, was born in Andrew County, Missouri on October 15, 1844. He wed Amanda Amelia Babcock on November 20, 1872. Their home was in Willits, California on a ranch. James K. Polk Shelton died on March 13, 1915. Among the children of James Polk and Amanda Babcock Shelton was:

Jeremiah Shelton, born in Mendocino County, California on May 29, 1886. He wed Lucy Elizabeth Tenny, born June 2, 1889, on December 6, 1907 in Mendocino County. He died there on July 11, 1951. Jerold Clifford Shelton, grandson of Jeremiah, great-grandson of James Polk Shel­ton, was born about 1928, Being of Gridley County, Cali­fornia, he has done considerable research in developing the history of the Shelton's who migrated West. Jeremiah had 7 children:

Frances Alice Shelton, born June 6, 1909, who wed Lloyd Leslie Ferguson on June 12, 1931 in Mendocino County California, she died on March l6, 1978.

Dorothy Elizabeth Shelton, born April 24, 1911, wed Raymond Earl Griggs on September 20, 1930 in Mendocino, County, California. She wed the second time, that time to John William Person on May 10,1944.

Jessie Myrtle Shelton, daughter of Jeremiah and Lucy Tenny Shelton, was born December 29, 1914. She wed Fred Denny Lawrason on May 26, 1935 in Mendocino County, California.

Helen Rosaline Shelton, daughter of Jeremiah and Lucy Tenny Shelton, was born April 12, 1921. She wed Lowell Martin Sanders in the 1930’s in Mendocino County.

Raymond Leroy Shelton, son of Jeremiah and Lucy Tenny Shelton, was born September 19, 1923. He wed Gloria Elizabeth Dickens March 27, 1948 in Mendocino County.

Evelyn Virginia Shelton, daughter of Jeremiah and Lucy Tenny Shelton, born August 8, 1927, wed Meryl Guptill Sanders on March 5, 1948 in Mendocino County, Calif.

David Jerry Shelton, son of Jeremiah and Lucy Tenny Shelton, born February 23, 1930, wed Barbara Gae Trapin on July 3, 1949, in Mendocino County, Calif.

Charlotte E. Shelton, daughter of William and Mary Means Shelton, was born in Whitesville, Andrew County, Missouri in December 1846; she wed Job Davis there on June 11, 1863.

Mary Elizabeth Means Shelton (Mrs. William) died in 1848. In 1850 the 3 children above were living with their grandmother, Elizabeth Means, then 54, as indicated in the census for that year for Andrew County, Missouri. It is Interesting to note that there was another James K. Polk Shelton living in that vicinity in Missouri at that time, born 1848, a son of Starling Shelton, a son of James (8) who was Lewis brother. William Shelton’s 2nd wife was Isabel Donna Casteel, born 1835, which he wed February 14, 1850. She and William were living in the Lewis Shelton home. Also in the home were Lewis widow, Nancy; her sons Elijah 21, Rice B. D. 19, James 17, John 15; her daughter Cynthia 23 and Cynthia’s husband Reuben Glaze 30; Tillman Shelton 8, son of Levi; and William E., age 1, likely the son of William and Isabel.

William, after the birth of his two first born sons by Isabel, David and William E., took his family and in 1853 migrated west­ward, probably to meet his brother David on the Oregon Trail. But William turned southward into California to establish a homestead in Sonoma County, while David moved northward into Washington Territory. William and Isabel had the following 8 children:

David Shelton, son of William and Isabel Casteel Shelton, was said to have been born in December 1851 in Missouri and died that same month.

William Elijah Shelton, son of William and Isabel Casteel Shelton, was said to have been born on July 6, 1853, enroute to California. There appears to be a discrepancy here. It will be noted from the above that a William E. Shelton, age 1, was living in the household of his grandmother Nancy in 1850 in Andrew County, Missouri, William and Isabel being also resi­dents of the household. William Elijah did not marry. He died in Eureka, California in 1926.

John Harrison Shelton, son of William and Isabell Shelton, was born in Sonoma County, California on February 11, 1855 He wed Maria S. Drew on July 4, 1888. He died on September 12, 1926.

George Burchfield Shelton, son of William and Isabell Casteel Shelton, was born in Sonoma County, California on January 6, 1857. He wed Celia Jannie Copple on November 18, l885. He died on July 13, 1898.

Laura Isabel Shelton, daughter of William and Isabell Casteel Shelton, was born in Mendocino County, California on January 4, 1860 she wed Charles Garrison on June 3, l877.

Thomas Sprague Shelton, son of William and Isabell Casteel Shelton, was born in Mendocino County, California on July 27, 1862. His first marriage was to Grace Anna Monroe on Apr. 9, 1893. His second marriage was to Mrs. Arabella Van Starr on June 20, 1911.

Charles Lee Shelton, son of William and Isabell Casteel Shelton, was born in Mendocino County, California on Septem­ber 20, l864. He wed Elizabeth Staton on January 22, 1898. He died November 21, 1941.

Francis Marion Shelton, son of William and Isabell Casteel Shelton, was born in San Luis Obispo County, California on December 30, 1869, died at age 1 month.

Shelton, Polly Ann (Mary Ann), dau of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton, was born in Clay County, Missouri on May 9, l824. She died in California in 1869. She married Greenbury Southwood on February 6, 1842 in Savannah, Andrew Co., Missouri. Greenbury, born in Illinois in 1822, died in California in about l865. It is noted that Greenbury Southwood was one of the Securers of Lewis Shelton’s estate. Lewis had died in testate. Other Securers were Tillman Shelton, Reuben Glaze, Levi Shelton and Gideon Phelps. The Administrators were Nancy Shelton and David Shelton. In the exodus westward from Andrew County, Missouri in l852, among the Shelton’s who are said to have migrated to California and Oregon Territory were Nancy Shelton (Lewis' widow) and her sons Tillman and Rice Bullard Shelton and sons-in-law Reuben Glaze and Greenbury Southwood, each presumably with his family. They and others of the clan are said to have been met on the Oregon Trail by brother David who escorted them to the Terri­tories of Washington and Oregon and California. Polly was the great-grandmother of Claude R. Bird to whom this writer is responsible for much of the data on Lewis Shelton’s descendants, par­ticularly those of Mary Ann (Polly) Shelton, his ancestor. The marriage of Mary Ann (Polly) Shelton to Greenbury Southwood is confirmed by Andrew County, Missouri marriage certificate. They had 8 children: Mourning E., Harriet K., Cynthia Ann, Rice Will­iam Daniel, Nancy, Mitchell, Isabell and Simion.

Mourning E. Southwood, daughter of Greenbury and Polly Ann (Mary Ann) Shelton Southwood, was born in 1842/43 in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. She died on January l6, 1896 in San Francisco, California. She married first Daniel David English in Mendocino County, California in 1860, second to Frank Bollinger

She married first Alfred William Elwess on August 8, 1878 in San Francisco. She married second to John Bird January 14, 1890 in Seattle, King County, Washington.

Cynthia Ann Southwood, daughter of Greenbury and Polly Ann (Ma­ry Ann) Shelton Southwood, was born in l847/48 in Missouri. She died November 6, l884 in San Francisco. She married twice, the name of her first husband not at hand. She married second to Charles C. Brown.

Nancy Southwood, daughter of Greenbury and Polly Ann (Mary Ann) Shelton Southwood, was born in Wyoming Territory on June 13, 1853, enroute from Missouri to California, she died March 3, 1926 in Anaheim, Orange County, California, she married Shel­don Littlefield in San Francisco on September 10, l870.

Mitchell Southwood, son of Greenbury and Polly Ann (Mary Ann) Shelton Greenbury, was born in l855, probably in Sonoma, Cali­fornia. He either died in the l860’s or was put up for adopt­ion. There is no further record at hand after the 1860 census in Mendocino County.

Isabell Southwood, daughter of Greenbury & Polly Ann, (Mary Ann) Shelton Southwood, was born in 1857, probably in Sonoma, Cal­ifornia. She either died in the 1860's or was put up for adoption. There is no further record at hand after the 1860 census in Mendocino County.

Simion Southwood, son of Greenbury& Polly Ann (Mary Ann) Shelton Southwood, was born in 1859 probably in Mendocino, Calif­ornia. He either died in the l860's or was put up for adopt­ion. There is no further record at hand after the Mendocino County census of 1860.

Cynthia Shelton, daughter of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton, was born in Clay County, Missouri on January 31, 1826. She wed Reuben Glaze, born 1820, on August 15, l842. They made the west­ward trek to California. Cynthia died on January 24, 1904. There is no record at hand of children.

Elijah Shelton, son of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton, was born in Clay County, Missouri on February 5, l828_. According to Engle "Jack" Shelton, surviving grandson of David Shelton, Elijah migrated to Washington Territory in 1852. A record shows that he married Elinor Catherine Blagg that year on April 18 he died on January 12, 1901.

Rice Bullard D. Shelton, son of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton, was born in Clay County, Missouri on January 20, 1830. Rice worked on the farm in Missouri and looked after the interests of his mother and younger siblings. Then in 1852 he with the family joined David on the Oregon Trail for the trek west and continued into Oregon and Washington Ter­ritories. He returned to Oregon in 1853, left the_; family there and went to Siskiyou County, California and worked in placer mines on Scott River until 1859. He returned to Oregon and raised cattle. He drove a herd to eastern Washington, but the venture failed because of the loss of much of the herd due to extreme cold weather. Then for a time he did some mining in Idaho, thence in 1867 to Virginia City, Montana where he became Superintendent of a mining crew, prospecting and raining around Helena did not bring much success. Crossing into Idaho he struck it rich on Spring Mountain in silver mine, in 12 months he sold his share in this for $25,000. He returned to Olympia, Washington for a short time but returned to Wyoming for more prospecting. But his health failed. At Hot Springs, Arkansas, where he went in about 1882 to bathe, in the curative waters there, he regained his health and met and married Jennie Lirus Alberton. They had three children, the first of whom died in infancy. The other two were:

Rice and Jennie had moved to California in 1883. They settled in the country near Los Angeles where they bought l60 acres. He improved the land by clearing and planting an l6-acre vine­yard etc. He sold this in 1892 and moved to a ranch near Bur-bank where he retired. His wife Jennie died there in 1898.

On one occasion as sheriff in one of the mining communities of Wyoming he was instrumental in ridding the community of a lawless element. Here he observed the hanging of 36 desperados during one winter. Rice B. D. Shelton led an active political life, was a supporter of the church and charities.

James Shelton, son of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton, was born in Clinton County, Missouri on June 15, 1832. He never married, likely went to Washington Territory. He was said to have been invalided early in life and had to be cared for, this responsibility reportedly devolving on his brother John. James died on March 25, 1906.

John Owens Shelton, son of Lewis and Nancy Gladden Shelton, was born in Clinton County, Missouri on December 10, 1834. He too went west to seek his fortune in Washington Territory. He too was a bachelor. A scholar, he taught school. Was said to have been in Secret Service during Civil war. He reportedly died in Texas in 1874.

Lewis was one of the first settlers in Anderson County, Miss­ouri. He had squatter’s rights on what is now the northwestern part of Whitesville, close by Platte River, on the old Glen

Thompson place. He built a log house there, adequate for his large family, which house stood the ravages of time until about 1945 when it was torn down. Lewis was said to have been a hunter. The house he built was the first in Whitesville. Lewis became an election judge in August 184l in Platte Township. Ministers of the Protestant Church conducted public worship at his home, which was near Platte River. He and Nancy were said to have been earnest members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Lewis died in l847 re­portedly of yellow fever. Nancy survived him by many years. She made the trek west in l852 with members of her family to Washing­ton Territory. She died in Yamhill County, Oregon in 1866, she having moved back there with Tillman and his family in 1854, Tillman having abandoned a claim he had established near David's, in a final note on David, Lewis Shelton's eldest son, the City of Shelton, Washington honored his memory on April 28, 1976 with a parade and the unveiling of a marker in front of City Hall, showing the location of David's first cabin, participating in the ceremony were three descendants of David: Jack Shelton, 85, son of David's son John S.W. Shelton; Gail Callahan, a great-granddaughter; and Lynn McNee, a great-great granddaughter. A granddaughter, Hypatia Cyphert Haupt, about 85, daughter of David's daughter Eliza Shelton Cyphert, also attended the ceremony but did not take part in the program account of debility. There were other Shelton descend­ants there.

Probably Catherine was the daughter of Roderick(7) and Sarah Briggs Shelton, born about 1787, shown in the census of 1800 as between 10 and l6 in Roderick's household in Buncombe County. Have no further record of this person as to marriage or children.

John Shelton, son of Roderick(7), was born about 1789, was by either Sarah Briggs or Ursula           Shelton. He does not show in 

the census of Buncombe County, North Carolina for 1830. Nor in the records of McMinn County, Tennessee, in a letter written by David's son John Shelton, grandson of Roderick (7), he listed the sons of Roderick. At hand are two copies of that letter, each alleged to be authentic copies. In one copy, which I have retained in my files for more than 30 years, did not include John as a son of Roderick. Yet in a copy of this letter appearing in a paper written by one Char­les Metcalf, date not shown, John is listed among the sons of Rod­erick, perhaps in the first letter John was inadvertently omitted and in the second was edited in. Some lists include him, others do not. He may have died early. He was not named in a deed in Bun­combe County records among those who were deeded land by Roderick, nor for that matter, was Roderick's son William below. The latter was not likely because he was a minor living with Roderick and Ursula at that time and may still have been a minor when Roderick died. John may have gone to Kentucky with Armistead, to Missouri with Lewis or to Tennessee with James(8) and settled in Jefferson County.

James Shelton (8), son of Roderick and Ursula Shelton, was

born in Patrick County, Virginia on March 1, 1791, the year Patrick County was formed from Henry County. He moved with his father's family to Buncombe County, North Carolina and grew up there. He wed and moved to McMinn County, Tennessee in 1819. This is the James Shelton who was the progenitor of the line to which this scribe be­longs and consequently with whose line this paper is primarily concerned, although it is intended to compile as complete a listing

of James father Roderick's descendants as far as practicable. The his­tory of James Shelton(8) and his progeny is in a separate section, Chapter III, which begins page 13 and ends page 150.

William Shelton, son of Roderick and Ursula     Shelton, was born in Patrick County, Virginia in 1793. He may also have moved to McMinn County, Tennessee some time before 1830 after having wed and started his family in Buncombe County, North Carolina, where he had moved with his father's family in about 1795. William does not show in the census of Buncombe County in the year 1830. There is, however, in the census of 1830 in McMinn County, Tennessee, a William Shelton. He shows there also in the years 1840, 1850 and 1860, the year 1850 showing him as a farmer, age 57, born in Virginia, having wed in North Carolina to Nancy      born in North Carolina, also age 57, whose last name was likely Larkin. The censuses of both 1830 and 1840 listed him as head of a family but didn't show names of individ­uals in it, Just so many in each age group, viz, for 1930: Males, 2 un 5, 3 5-10, 1 15-20 and 1 20-30; females, 1 un 5, 1 5-10, and 1 30-40, For 1840, Males, 1 un 5, 2 5-10, 2 10-15, 2 15-20 and 1 30-40; females, 1 un 5, 1 5-10, 1 10-15, 1 40-50. There was a family in McMinn County, Tennessee residing near the home of James Shelton(8) which was headed by one Bill Shelton. He lived there from the l880's to the 1940’s farming his land and raising a large family. Some descendants of James(8) considered the families to be related. Bill was of an age to have been born in the l850's. One of the above, Winnie perhaps, if a male, is possibly this Bill Shelton (Willie instead of Winnie). Bill had:

Roy Rector Shelton, born about 1903, wed Ople Mae McInturf, born November 8, 1907, who died May 6, 1933. They had 4 child­ren: Mary Myrom, born June 13, 1929, who wed Richard Cass Bow­man and had daughter Karen; Leona, born February 20, 1931, who wed Bobby Allen Barbara and has 5 children; Martha Jane Shelton born October 24, 1932, who wed Wesley Green and has a son; and a son who died as a child. After Opal’s death in 1933 Roy wed the second time. This wife was Phyllis Moon and they had four children: Roy Rector, Jr., born May 14, 1953 who wed Wilma Stansbury; Victor Emanuel, born July 4, 1954, died at age 9; Phillip Ray, born June 21, 1955, wed Cynthia Scarborough & had Steven and Shelly; and Phyllis Kay, twin of Phillip Ray. Roy was well known in the community as a baseball player, especial­ly for his homerun hitting ability.

One Nancy Shelton thought to be one of the daughters of Roderick and Ursula   Shelton, shown in the census of 1800 in Buncombe County, North Carolina as one of the two under 10 years of age, she was born about 1795. There is evidence that a Nancy Graves, wife of Christopher Graves, was born Nancy Shelton, sister of James(8), dau. of Roderick(7). It will be noted from Chapter III, James Shelton(8) that there were numerous intermarriages between the Shelton and Graves families in that generation. The census of 1830 in McMinn County, Tennessee shows Christopher Graves, but the family was not recorded. He died in 1838, having been born about 1790. The census of 1840 with Nancy as head of the family lists: Males, 1 10-15, 1 15-20; females, 1 un 5, 1 5-10, 1 15-20. 1 20-30 and 1 40-50. This family is shown next door to James(8). The children of Christopher and Nancy Graves were:

One of these children of Christopher and Nancy Graves wed a McInturf in McMinn County, Tennessee, probably Nancy and was the progenitor of many descendants of that name in the county.

Elizabeth Shelton, thought to be the other of the two daughters of Roderick(7) and Ursula Shelton shown in the census of 1800 for Buncombe County, North Carolina as under 10 years of age, was born about 1797. One of the daughters, likely this Elizabeth, wed Will­iam (Buck) Lawson. The censuses of both 1830 and 1840 list the Buck Lawson family in Tennessee, that of 1830 in McMinn County and that of 1840 across the river in Bradley County. The census of 1830 shows William age 4O to 50, his wife 30 to 40 and a son age 5 to 10. In l840 William is shown as age 50 to 60, his wife 40 to 50 and son age 15 to 20. The census of 1850 does not show this family as an entity, the wife Elizabeth likely having died. William (Buck) is shown in the home of his brother-in-law, James Shelton(8). William was shown in that census as age 55, though nearer 60. Perhaps the Jim Lawson shown page 21, born about 1854, was grandson of William and Elizabeth, and son of the James Lawson born about l8l5 (p 124).

Duck Shelton, said to be son of Roderick (7) by Mary Franklin, a Cherokee Indian girl, was born about 1798. Duck Shelton was said to have been supported and cared for by Roderick(7). Records show that he married and had a daughter, Mahalia Shelton, who married a Union Soldier, Alexander Griffin. Duck Shelton reportedly had a silver mine which he worked, and from the silver he produced minted coins. The silver being of a high grade of purity, the coins had higher silver content than those from the Philadelphia mint. In 1848, he was found guilty in a Yancey County Court of making and passing counterfeit money and was sentenced to have 30 lashes to be administered by the sheriff. Traditionally, the mine was so well hidden that it has not been found to this day. William Bud Shelton is said to have had the silver molds supposed to have been used by Duck in minting his silver coins. Duck Shelton died in 1860.

There is mention of one Zebulon Shelton, thought by Catherine Shelton Henninger (Mrs. J. P.), granddaughter of James(8) to be a brother of James(8), son of Roderick(7), but this writer cannot authenticate this, possibly he was a cousin. But the only Zebulon Shelton turned up in this scribe's research was a son of Peter(3), an uncle of the line 4 generations removed. That Zebulon Shelton was born in Middlesex County, Virginia in 1700.

Roderick Shelton was a respected citizen of his community. He reportedly had fought under General George Washington in the Contin­ental Army in the Revolution from Virginia. He had fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain in North Carolina in 1880. He raised his large family in Buncombe County, North Carolina, acquired much land and other property. He was selected for jury duty for the April term in l800. He died there in Shelton Laurel in about 1817 and is buried there on Allegheny Mountain.

A Mrs. James d. Shelton of Bolivar, Missouri, whose husband was a postman, wrote in 1976 inquiring about her husband’s ancestry* She mentioned a Mrs. Cecil Shelton of Hanford, California who was writing a treatise on one Jesse Shelton and one Stephen Shelton, she having spent some 14 years in compiling her data. She had visited my brother B. F. (Pete) Shelton in Manchester, Tennessee where she had seen a paper I wrote on our branch of the Shelton’s in 1957.

Mrs. James D. Shelton says her husband’s great-grandfather was John Daniel Shelton, born about l8l7 who wed Elizabeth Adeline Brown, born about 1823, and lived in McMinn County, Tennessee, shown in census of 1850. John Daniel Shelton, one of 11 children himself, had the following children:

the descendants of Daniel Shelton of Connecticut, born 1668, whom she thought might be the ancestor she was searching for. Daniel Shelton wed Elizabeth Wells in 1692 and had 9 children. He died in 1728. My study of the records disclosed that he had come to America from England with his brother Richard in l687, the sons of James, who was the son of Thomas, who was the son of James (1). This Daniel Shelton had 7 sons and 2 daughters. The sons were:

In the census of 1850 for McMinn County, Tennessee there is a John Shelton, then 89, and wife Martha, also 89, listed with the John (Daniel) Shelton mentioned by Mrs. James D. above. It is not unlikely that John and Martha were the parents of John Daniel and that John is the son of Daniel, Jr. in this case the lineage would be as follows:

James’ father was Thomas Shelton, born about 1606; and Thomas Shelton was the son of James Shelton(l) of this writer's lineage, born in England about 1580, who came to America in l6lO and was in Jamestown in 1620.

The John Daniel Shelton above, great-grandfather of James D. Shel­ton of Bolivar, Missouri moved from McMinn County, Tennessee to Dade County, Missouri after 1850. Being a minister, he moved about, likely having died outside of Dade County.

Letters at hand from cousins — Mrs. Virginia Shelton Martens of Brazoria, Texas November 13, 1978 and April 17, 1983, and Mrs. Naydeen Gandy of Parsons, Kansas in 1979 and 1983 list two other sisters, Mrs. S. M. Jones (June Imogene Shelton) of Westbrook, Texas, and Mrs. A. C. Roberts (Louise Shelton) of McCamey, Texas, and they have signif­icant data relative to the William and Nancy Shelton family shown pages 120 and 121 in the census of McMinn County, Tennessee. Reference is made to notes written by their grandfather, Thomas Pinkney Shelton, some 50 years earlier. He was the grandson of William and Nancy, his father being also William Shelton. He states also that this William's great-grandfather was one James Shelton, that James came to America from Scotland in the 1750’s and settled in Virginia, that he had three children Steven, Joel and William and that he moved to somewhere in Missouri in about 1836 and died there age 110 leaving many descendants. Thomas Pinkney showed James as the father of William (born 1793) where this writer has assumed that Roderick(7)

was the father of that William. He lists the children of that William and Nancy McGuire Shelton. He wrote that Nancy was half Cherokee, her mother being Indian with family name Kinchloe. Their children:

Thomas Pinkney Shelton wrote that William and Nancy are both buried in Sevier County, Tennessee. He wrote that their son William, born 1825 in North Carolina, lived with the Cherokees in the household of Aaron Hawk for a time at age 10 or 11. The census of 1850 above does not in­clude William. Being older, he was likely out on his own. The census of 1840 listed 2 sons between 15 and 20, both of whom would have been old­er than Larkin. The other son was likely George. This William wed Anna Beckett in 1854 in Athens, Tennessee, moved to Arkansas about l859. Anna was born in Athens in 1827. The children of Anna and William were:

William died about 1863, was in the Civil War. Anna reportedly lived until 1907.

Naydeen Gandy in a letter May 13 1983 wrote: "Since my grandfather's father William, who married Anna Beckett, died when my grandfather was so young, I'm sure his information came from his mother who had probably grown up in the same area as William. Also he had done some research for his Indian papers in 1907, as he has an affidavit from a lady in Texas, Mary Long, who said she was born in 1830 in either McMinn or Bradley County, Tennessee and knew ray grandfather's sister Luiza Jane as a child in Tennessee." There was a Renia Long, age 13, in the household of Wm T. and Elizabeth Shelton in Bradley County in 1850 and there was a Harry Long, age 21, in the James Shelton household in McMinn County in l870, a laborer. In the census of 1860 in McMinn County Louisa Jane Shelton is shown in the home of George Shelton and his wife Emily at age 6, shown also are Elizabeth, age 3 and Augustus P., age 1 month (see p.132), The year before William and Anna had reportedly departed for Arkansas. No doubt they left the children with William's brother George. These 3 and 3 other children, all-older are shown as having been born in Tennessee_.

Thomas Pinkney Shelton, born September 10, 1858 married in Arkansas in l88l to Sarilda Lynch. They had seven children:

The last named at 87 was the only survivor in 1983. She was residing in California. Thomas Pinkney died September 7, 1931, Sarilda on December 18, 1843.

Anna Beckett who married William Shelton in 1854 was the daughter of Thomas Beckett and Elizabeth Brumfield Beckett of Pennsylvania. Thomas’ parents were Josiah and Barbara Beckett, Josiah having been born in Ger­many. He served in the War of 1812.

The Brumfields were from Virginia, of English, descent. One William Brumfield was a Baptist minister who died in l841, is buried in the Cleveland, Tennessee cemetery.

Thomas Pinckney’s wife, Sarilda Lynch, whom he wed in 1881, was the daughter of William Lynch from Tennessee, reportedly the great nephew of James Lynch who founded the town of Lynchburg, Tennessee. Sarilda Carol­ine Lynch Shelton died on December 18, 1943.

A further significant note in the letter above from Naydeen Gandy is a paragraph about Nancy McGuire Shelton, wife of William born 1793:

"Nancy McGuire Shelton was half Cherokee; our grandfather always said she was an orphan when William married her. Her mother's Indian maiden name was Kinchelo ... Grandfather said that in l855 his father was liv­ing with an Indian named Aaron Hawk ... As to why at 10 he was living with someone else when his parents were alive is a mystery to us. At any rate, we know he did not come to Oklahoma with the Cherokees. So maybe the parents had started west and left son with someone, one won­ders if they could ever reconstruct those days."

During the summer of 1981 this writer corresponded with a Miss Jowanda Shelton who was interested in tracing her lineage back through her great-great grandfather Washington Shelton, stating that she had in­formation to indicate that Washington Shelton's father was Bennett Shelton, son of Thomas Shelton. She listed her lineage back to and in­cluding Washington Shelton, born 1797 who wed Mary M. (or A.) Fields in 1827, she gave the lineage as follows:

Although this writer has no data on a Washington Shelton nor on a George Shelton either shown born near the date shown for Washington, there is record of Bennett Shelton, born about 1780, his father Thomas, born 1755, son of James born 1734, and their forebears back to the earliest settlers in America.

Thomas Shelton made his will in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on January 4,1807. Probated July 19, 1808, he had the following legatees:

*-On page 4 it will be noted that on December 3, 1795 Roderick Shelton(7) witnessed the marriage in Patrick County, Virginia of Sally Franklin to Benjamin Johnson, Roderick thought by this scribe to be Thomas' brother, thereby Sally's uncle. She had been married earlier to a Franklin, possibly Lewis Franklin, born about 1752, a soldier in the Revolutionary war.

The will of Thomas' brother William Shelton, several years younger than Thomas, dated November 29, 1827, lists among his legatees one Thomas Shelton and one Bennett Shelton. This Bennett Shelton, according to records at hand, was born about 1785, some five years after the Bennett Shelton listed above (son of Thomas).

Jowanda Shelton's father, Guy Shelton, married Josephine L. V. Neel born September 27, 1905 in Dyersburg, Tennessee on October 3, 1924.Guy's father William Alexander Shelton wed Mahalia Crittendon Childress, born July 28, 1869 in Dyersburg about 1890. William Alexander's father Olyn-thus Gregory Shelton wed Matilda Robert Dodson, born about 1840 in Lin­den, Perry County, Tennessee on October 4, 1857. He was a Union Soldier in the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment aboard the steamer Sultana that sank in the Mississippi River April 27, 1865 where hundreds of men were lost. This writer assumes "that Olynthus G. was one of the few survivors_. (See page 31). 0. G. ‘s father (George) Washington Shelton wed Mary M. (or A.) Fields in Williamson County, Tennessee in 1827.

At hand are some random notes taken from the archives of the Court House at Greeneville, Greene County, Tennessee.

On July 26, 1821 one James Shelton wed Ruthea Rawlins in Greene County, joined in marriage by Gilbert Morisey, Justice of the Peace, having been licensed by A. Patterson, CGC, July 24, 1821.

On June 10, 1822 Armstrong G. Shelton wed Catherine Harrison.

On December 6, 1852 one John Shelton wed Emeline Linnamon, William P. Sharp, justice of the peace.
