Information of General Wool from 1836

The following is a draft from the United States Treasury Department to General Wool, who was in stationed in Athens in 1836 to oversee the Indian removal. This piece of McMinn Co. has been lost until recently, Kenneth Langley found an old newspaper that said Camp Wool was located near Aaron Matthew's mill.

Matthews had the only cotton gin in Athens, he bought lots 119 & 120 of the original lots in Athens one was where Moore's Furniture Store and the other was where Athens Supply is. Kenneth also located Wool's paper's in the New York State Library. Kenneth serves on a committee to purchase material for the McMinn Co. Historical Society and just recently received some receipt, vouchers etc.  These are in the historical room at the Court House. He has an order in for Wool's letterbook which contains 191 pages.  These  letters were addressed to Wool while he was here and should be a good source of information about the removal in this area.
