Houston County is located in Middle Tennessee, one of the state's three "grand divisions".

It is bordered on the north by Stewart County, on the east by Montgomery & Dickson Counties, on the south by Humphreys County and on the west by Henry & Benton Counties.

Houston County was established in 1871 from lands that had been part of Dickson, Humphreys, and Stewart Counties. Erin is the County Seat. The county was named for Samuel Houston (1793-1863), a Tennessee Congressman and Governor, as well as the first President of the Texas republic.
