Update for Hawkins County Researchers

Hawkins County Archive building

In 2004, it was mandated to create a Records Commission in each county in TN.   Hawkins County Public Records Commission agreed to allow a county building located at 951 East McKinney Ave. in Rogersville, to serve as the Archives for the Preparation of Historic Files.

In January 2005, records from the following entities were moved from the Hawkins County Courthouse to the Hawkins County Archives on McKinney Ave. in Rogersville. These documents include:

  • Chancery Court records beginning around 1788 to 1930
  • Civil Court
  • County Court
  • Marriages up to 1964
  • Wills up to 1930
  • Divorce Records
  • Tax Assessments
  • Hawkins Co. School records
  • NO juvenile records are available

Researchers can find the previously stated records at the Hawkins County Archives.

Volunteering at the Hawkins County Archives

Tasks performed by volunteers include cleaning, indexing, and filing all incoming records, which are placed in acid-free folders and boxes.  Volunteers also will pull selected records for researchers looking for old deeds, tracing family property, marriages and wills, etc.

Jack Goins is the County Archivist. To reach Jack or other Archivists or volunteers for assistance, one can call (423) 921-0904 Monday-Thursday from 9:00-4:00pm.   Can also reach assistance through Hawkins County Archive or   Hawkins County TN.gov.

The Hawkins County Archive volunteers assisted approximately 1,000 callers and walk-in visitors in 2016.   The volunteers, also known as "Friends of Hawkins County Archive Project" are a great group of friendly and knowledgeable men and women with many hours working at the Archives.
