This material is taken from the book, " With the Colors From Hawkins Co."  It lists men from Hawkins County that were in World War I.  It was published in 1920/21, with a selected number printed, by the Pressman's Home of Rogersville.  This book is being transcribed by  Rose Balish

transferred to         Camp Sevier. Sailed overeas about 1 July 1918.
Received wounds in arm     during engagement with the
Germans.

George         Lawson of Lee valley. Entered service at Camp Gordon,
Ga.,
    21 Sept.1917, sailing overseas on 11 May 1918.

    Rogersville. Born 22 May 1898. Entered service at Fort DuPont,
    1917,sailing overseas in June 1918. Promoted from private to
    corporal in 1917 and to sergeant the following year.

        Private, Infantry. Son of F.E. and L.B. Mauk of
Surgoinsville.       Born 2 April 1895. Entered service at Camp Gordon,
Ga., on
    21 Sept. 1917, later going to Camp Servier. Sailed overseas on
    10 May 1918, for France. Member of Company I,117th Infantry,
    30th Div.

        Private, Medical Department. Son of George and Lucy Moree of
    Rogersville. Born 10 Jan. 1894. entered service at Camp Gordon,
Ga.,     on 24 June 1918.

        Private, A.S.S.C. Son of Mr. and Mrs P.F. Solomon of Bulls
Gap.      Born 16 Dec 1898. Entered service 20 Oct.1917 serving until
    11 March 1919.

        Private, 101st Engineers, 30th Div. Son of Alvin and Rena Ward
of     Bulls Gap. Born 1896. Entered service at Camp Gordon, Ga., on
    21 Sept 1917, later going to Camp Sevier, S.C. Sailed overseas on
    26 May 1918.

        Private , Infantry. Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rippy of
    Rogersville. Born 8 July 1896. Entered service at Camp Wadsworth on
    5 Sept. 1918.

#11     Miller Kirkpatrick
        Sergeant, First-Class Aero Corps. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
    Kirkpatrick of Persia.Born 30 Aug. 1892. Entered service at
    Jefferson Barracks, Mo., was transferred to Kellyfield, Texas, and
    to Mineola, N.Y., sailing overseas on 12 Oct. 1917. Attached to the
    106th Areo Replacement Squad.

#12     David Albert Weaver
        Private, Company B, 149th Infantry. Son of C.M.B. and M.E.
Weaver
    of McCloud. Born 16 Oct 1896. Entered service at Camp Shelby,
Ala.,      on 5 Aug 1918, sailing overeas on 29 Sept. 1918. Returning
home on
    24 April 1919.

        Private, Infantry. Son of S.D. and S.C. Holdway of McCloud.
Born     5 June 1889. Entered service at Camp Pikr, Ark.,on 25 May

the       University of Tennessee on 14 Oct 1918.

S.C. on     22 Oct 1918. Discharged on 18 Dec 1918.

    Entered service at Camp Pike, Ark., on 25 May 1918.

Barrett of Surgoinsville. Born 10 Dec 1888. Entered service at Camp
Gordon, Ga., on 21 Sept. 1917, sailing overseas 17 Nov 1917.

        Private, First Class, 117th Infantry, 30th Div.Son of Harme and
Sallie Larkins of Church Hill. Born 15 Nov 1888. Entered service at
Camp Gordon, Ga., on 21 Sept 1917, being later transferred to Camp
Sevier. Sailed overseas on 10 May 1918.

        Private , Infantry. Son of Pat H. Ramey of Bulls Gap. Born
    10 Feb. 1895. Entered service at Fort. Thomas, Ky. on 8 July
1918.
#6      Glen M. Bailey
        Private, 117th Infantry, Company C. Son of F.M. and Lou Bailey of
Church Hill. Born 1894. Entered service at Camp Gordon, Ga.,on
    21 Sept 1917, later being transferred to Camp Sevier. Sailed
overseas     on 11 May 1918, for France.Wounded at the battle of
Sileburke Lake on     23 July 1918, and later being gassed and hit with
Machine gun bullet     on 9 Oct 1918.

#7      Samuel P. Bailey
        Sergeant. Headquarters Company 115th Field Artillery. Son of F.M.
and Lou Bailey of Church Hill. Born 1892. Entered service at Camp
Gordon, Ga., on 21 Sept 1917, later being transferred to Camp
Sevier,     S.C. Sailed overseas on 29 May 1918 and was wounded in
battle on
    23 Aug. 1918.

#8      Charlie Hartgrove
        Corporal, Infantry. Son of Peggie Hartgrove of Church Hill.
Entered
service at Camp Gordon, Ga., on 9 Sept 1917. sailing overseas     on 19
May 1918. Promoted to Corporal on 23 Aug 1918, and was wounded     in
battle of St.Quinten on 17 Oct 1918.

#9      Samuel Robert Smith
        Private, S.A.T.C. Son of Charles M. Smith of Rogersville. Born
    10 Dec. 1899. Entered Emory and Henry College, Emory, Va., on
    31 Oct. 1918.

#10     Rome Richards
        Private, Infantry. Son of J.R. Richards of Burem. Born
    2 March 1891. Entered service at Fort Oglethrope, Ga., on
    13 May 1918, Later going to Camp McClellan, Ala.

#11     Chester C. Lee
        Mechanic Aviation. Son of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Lee of Eidson. Born
    1 Dec. 1889. Entered service at Waco, Texas. Also Serving in camps
at     Brooklyn, N.Y., St. Paul, Minn., and Roanoke, Va. Was motor
tester on     the field.

#12     Cary Lawson
        Private, 314th Machine Gun Company. Son of W.A. and Dinah Lawson
of
Eidson. Born 6 Jan. 1895. Entered service at Camp Gordon, Ga., on     22
July 1918, leaving for France about the 15th of Aug. 1918.

#13     H. Clay Vaughn
        Private, Infantry. Son of W.M. and S.A. Vaughn of Eidson. Entered
service at Camp Gordon, Ga., on 21 Sept 1917, later going to Camp
Sevier, S.C. Sailed overseas on 11 May 1918. Left france for the
United States on 17 Mar. 1919.

#14     James L. Hill
        Private, Hospital Corps. Son of D.Y.G. and N.E. Hill of
Rogersville. Born 17 Oct 1898. Sailed overseas on 5 Jult 1918.

#15     H. Clay Davis
        Wagoner, 117th Infantry. Son of C.W. Davis of Rogersville.Born 15
Aug. 1895. Entered service at Camp Gordon, Ga., on 21 Sept 1917,
sailing overseas on 16 Mar 1918. Engaged in breaking the Hindenburg
line in the Yres sector.

#16     Strum W. Cope
        Sergeant, Company D, 306th Engineers. Son of J.G. and Martha Cope
of Eidson. Born 7 Feb 1894. Entered service at Camp Gordon, Ga. on
    21 Sept. 1917, later going to Camp Jackson. Sailed overseas on
    21 Aug 1918.

#17     Emery A. Cope
        Private, 312th Feild Artillery. Son of J.G. and Martha Cope of
Eidson. Born 15 Jan 1896. Entered service at the University of
Kentucky, Lexington, Ky.,on 6 May 1918, Sailing overseas on
    12 July 1918.

#18     Tilman Lovin
        Private, Infantry. Son of William Lovin of Mooresburg. Born
    14 Feb 1889. Entered service at Camp Wadsworth, S.C. on 5 Sept
1918,     sailing overseas on 30 Sept. 1918.

#19     W. Thurman Christian
        Sergeant, Infantry. Son of David L. and Ellen Bailey Christian of
Church Hill. Born 1893. Entered service at Camp Gordon, Ga.,on
    7 Sept, 1917, and sailed overseas about May 1918. Had several
narrow     escapes while on the front.

#20     W.S.Walters
        Wagoner, Infantry. Son of B.C. and Lou W. Walters of
Surgoinsville.
Born 15 Nov. 1894. Entered service at Camp Sevier,        S.C., sailing
overseas on 11 May 1918. Promoted to wagoner on
    18 Sept. 1918, and served in that capacity during the war.

Born 31 Jan 1890. Entered service at Fort Thomas, Ky.,on 8 July

        Private, Infantry. Son of James and Lula Ladd of Surgoinsville.
Born 27 Dec 1895. Entered service at Camp Pike, Ark., on
    25 May 1918, and sailed overseas 18 Aug 1918.

#3      Gale Ladd
        Private, Infantry. Son of James and Lula Ladd of Surgoinsville.
    Born 19 April 1898. Entered service at Camp Pike, Ark., on
    25 May 1918, and sailed overseas 18 Aug 1918.
 
#4      Daniel H. Roark
        Private, Infantry. Son of William and Angline Roark of Persia.
    Entered service at Camp Kearney on 12 July 1917, sailing for
France     on 28 June 1918. Was promoted to First Class private on 19
May 1918.     Was gassed in Verdun sector about 3 Nov. 1918.

#5      June H. Smith
        Private, Infantry. Son of June H. and Ellen M. Smith of
Surgoinsville. Born 10 Feb. 1891. Entered service at Camp Gordon,
Ga., on 21 Sept. 1917, sailing for France on 11 May 1918. Engaged
    in battles in Yres sector, and also at Bellecourt, Estrees
and         Fremont. Was honorably discharged 17 April 1919.
 
#6      Claude Tank Christian
        Sergeant, 321st Batt, 30th Div. Son of Ellen and D.L. Christian
of
Church Hill. Born 8 Sept 1896. Entered service at Camp Shelby,
Miss. on 15 July 1918, Being later transferred to Camp Sevier, S.C.
Sailed overseas.
 
#7      Samuel T. Moser
        Private, Forestry. Son of S.T. Moser of Rogersville. Entered
service in Canadian Expedionary Forces on 11 May 1917, at Edmonton,
sailing overseas on 26 Jun 1917. landed in England 4 July 1917: in
France, 17 Sept. 1917, serving there until 12 Jan 1919. Discharged
in     Canada on 15 March 1919. Second Hawkins County boy to arrive
in         France.
 
#8      Oscar Paul Steele
        Corporal, Machine Gun Batt. Son of R.E. and F.L. Steele of
Rogersville. Born 1894. Entered service at Camp Gordon, Ga.,on
    21 Sept. 1917.

#9      Grover Cradic
        Private, Company G, 106th Infantry. Son of J.M. Cradic of Church
Hill. Born 1897. Entered service at Camp Gordon, Ga., on
    24 June 1918, sailing overseas on 24 Aug 1918. was gassed while in
    the Argonne sector on 6 Nov. 1918.

#10     Marion Wininger
        Private, Infantry. Son of Phillip and Emaline Wininger of Church
Hill. Entered service at American Lake, Cal., sailing overseas in
Jan. 1918.
 
#11     Dewitt Clifton
        Private, Infantry. Son of James and Alice Clifton of
Surgoinsville. Born 1896. Entered Service at Camp Shelby, Miss., on
15 July 1918, sailing overseas in October 1918.

#12     Oliver Fields
        Private, Infantry. Son of D.F., and M.J. Fields of Surgoinsville.
    Born 15 Aug 1894. Entered service at Camp Gordon, Ga., on
    21 Sept. 1917. Sailed overseas on 10 May 1918. Was in Camp Sevier
    previous to his sailing.

#13     Joseph A. Sensabaugh
        Private, 105th Infantry, 27th Div. Son of J.M. and H.M.
Sensabaugh of Church Hill. Born 3 Dec. 1896. Entered service at Camp
Wadsworth, S.C. on 5 Sept. 1918, sailing overseas on 20 Sept. 1918.
Returned home on 7 April 1919.

#14     Hobert L. Salyer
        Corporal, Company B, 57th Infantry. Son of D.W. and Caroline
Salyer of Church Hill. Born 9 Feb. 1897. Entered service at Camp
Wadsworth, S.C., on 5 Sept. 1918, sailing overseas 1 Oct. 1918.

#15     William Oscar Parker
        Private, 310th Infantry. Son of R.G. and Abagale Parker of Church
Hill. Born 30 Sept. 1897. Entered service at Camp Wadsworth, S.C. on
5 Sept 1918, sailing overseas on 1 Oct 1918.

#16     Jesse C. Long
        Private, First Class, 163rd Infantry, 41st Div. Son of J.M. and
Ella Long of Whitesburg. Born 4 Feb 1896. Entered service at Camp
Shelby, Miss., on 15 Sept 1918, sailing overseas on 2 October 1918.

#17     Henry H. Read
        Private, Machine Gun Company, 57th Infantry. Son of F.M. and
Johnnie Read of Russellville. born 16 March 1891. Enteed service at
Camp Pike, Ark., on 24 June 1918.

#18     Raymond A. Read
        Private, First Class Infantry. Son of F.M. and Johnnie Read of
Russellville. Born 20 May 1894. Entered service at Camp sevier,
S.C.,     sailing 10 May 1918. Wounded during the Somme Offensive on
    8 Oct. 1918.

        Private, M.T.C. Son of Mr. And Mrs. W.B. Howe of Rogersville.
Born 4 Oct. 1896. Entered service at Camp Jackson, Jacksonville,
Fla., on 26 Jun 1918. Did not sail due to the armistice.

#20     M.D.Watterson
        Private, Engineers. Son of Mr. And Mrs. C.C. Watterson of
Surgoinsville. Born 9 Feb 1893. Entered service at Fort Benjamin
Harrison, Ind., sailing overseas on 29 July 1918.

Born 27 Nov. 1891. Entered service at Camp Wheeler, Ga., on
    4 Sept. 1918, receiving a Honorable discharge on 24 Feb. 1919
after     six months service.

        Private Company F, 45th Infantry. Son of Lee and Leaner Gordon of
Mooresburg. Born 1891. Entered service at Fort Thomas, Ky., on
    8 Jul 1918, later being transferred tp Camp Gordon, Ga.

May 1896. Entered service at the University of Tennessee,     Knoxville,
on 2 Sept. 1918.

#15     Frank Marion Reed, Jr.
        Private, Infantry. Son of Mr. And Mrs. F.M. Reed of Russellville.
Born 13 June 1892. Entered service at Camp Pike, Ark., on
    25 May 1918, sailing overseas in August 1918. Went over the top
twice     and was on the front when the armistice was signed.

        Sergeant, 318th Infantry, company G. Son of James and Leaner Hurd
of Eidson. Born June 1893. Entered service at Columbus, Ohio, in
    May 1917, sailing overseas shortly after that date.

August 1887. Entered service at Camp Gordon, Ga., on 3 Oct.1917.
