Jonathan served in the Civil War: Pension records: Jonathan

Jonathan Coatney was born December 19, 1840,
in Hawkins County, Tennessee, (according to his records and stories he
told his kids.) He ran away
from home as a young man. He was out chopping down trees laid down
his ax and left with some people. He never talked about his parents
(although he
probably had a step mother and may have had half brothers.) He
married MILDRED A. SHELBY (daughter of EVAN WILEY SHELBY and VIRGINIA
ALMIRA SALLEE SHELBY) about March 3, 1860, in Mercer County, Missouri.
She died May 3, 1863, while he was fighting in the civil war. Jonathan
was a private in Company D 23 Missouri Infantry. Stories say that Mildred
had some children and Louisa helped take care of them but they died. He
enlisted July 10, 1862, in Cainsville, Missouri, and was discharged
June 9, 1865. He was in Sherman's March to the Sea and was a day away from
Washington DC when they learned that Lincoln was dead.
Jonathan married Mildred's sister, LOUISA ELLEN SHELBY on August
19, 1865, (her birthday) in Pike County, Missouri. Louisa Ellen Shelby
was born August 19, 1843, in Tennessee (probably Montgomery County).
She was also the daughter of EVAN WILEY and VIRGINIA ALMIRA
(SALLEE) SHELBY. Jonathan wore a beard for years. One day he
went to Sargent, Mo and had it shaved off. When he came home the
kids and his
wife wouldn't let him in until she recognized the patches on his overalls.
In 1865 they moved to Pike County, Illinois. In the 1880 census they were
in
Bourbon County, Kansas (Timberhill) and in 1890 they were in Texas
County, Missouri. Jonathan died of cancer on September 10, 1926, and is
buried
in Miller Cemetery, Texas County, Missouri.
Louisa Ellen (Shelby) Coatney went out hunting a hen's nest
along the road and came complaining about being tired and went in to lay
down and died
in her sleep. She died on July 7, 1931, at her home in Mountain
Grove, Missouri, south of Cabool. She is also buried in Miller Cemetery.

1) Virginia Almira (Allie) born April 9, 1868,
in Pike County, Illinois. She married August 3, 1889 James Tom Norris.
She died February 5, 1926, Clear
Springs, Texas County, Missouri. Children: Charley (1890-1958),
Mary Ellen (1892-1973), Lee, Babe later changed to Robert (1895-1973),
Joseph
(1897-1964), Harry (1905-1988), John (1901-1982) I have
a family picture of her. J. T. Norris was a Justice of the Peace in Texas
County, Missouri
late eighteen hundred and early 1900s.
OBITUARY: Death of Mrs. J.T. Norris.
Virginia Allie Coatney was born in Illinois April 9, 1868; died at her
home near Clear Springs, Missouri.,
February 5, 1926; age 57 years, 9 months and
5 days. She moved to Texas county when a girl; was married to James T.
Norris August 3, 1889.
To this union seven children were born, all
living. She has been in poor health for the past five years. She is survived
by her father and mother,
Mr. and Mrs. John Coatney, three sisters,
three brothers, six sons, one daughter and seven grandchildren. Her husband
preceded her in death
March 27, 1920, and a sister Miss Sarah Coatney
died in May, 1924. Rev. J.S. Ellis conducted the funeral services and body
was laid to rest
in the Miller cemetery. Relatives from away
attending the funeral were Mrs. Minnie Stephens, Drumright, Okla., Mrs.
May Hawkins, Miami,
Okla., and Mrs. L.N. Pease. Card of Thanks.
We wish to thank the many friends and neighbors who helped us during the
sickness and after
the death of our mother. May God's richest
blessings rest on all. Mrs. Marry Baine and daughter, Charley Norris and

OBITUARY: Death of Sarah Coatney.
Sarah Coatney, daughter of Mr and Mrs. John Coatney, formerly of Elk Creek
but now residing at Nagle,
Mo., was born in Pike county, Illinois, February
22, 1872 and departed this life at Miami, Oklahoma, May 16, 1924, making
her age at time
of death 52 years, 3 months and 27 days. After
a long and continued illness death relieved her of her suffering at the
home of her sister, Mrs.
May Hawkins, in Miami. She was a member of
the Christian church for a good many years and left the evidence of her
acceptance with her
Master, who doeth all things well. Just before
death came she said there was nothing to live for in this world and that
she was ready and willing
to go any time. Oh, the hope of the soul beyond
the grave! Blessed thought. She leaves to mourn their great loss an aged
father and mother, three
brothers, four sisters, besides other relatives
and a host of friends. The remains were transported here from Miami
for burial. The funeral was
conducted by the writer at the Miller cemetery
May 18th, where their friends and near relatives met to pay the last tribute
of respect to one who
was so dear to them. After the services the
remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Miller cemetery to await God's

3) Frances Isabell was born March 19, 1874 in Illinois
and married (1) ---Allison married (2) John C. Crowley. She
died in Bartlesville, Oklahoma June
8, 1951, age 77 buried White Rose Cemetery. (no stones) Minister
of the church of the Brethren officiated at the services Children: Fannie
(Oliver),
Ellen (Dizmang), Lester.
OBITUARY: Mrs. Frances Isabelle
Crowley, 77, resident of this community since 1907, passed away at the
home of her daughter, Mrs. T.J. Larmore
in Bartlesville at one o'clock Saturday afternoon
following an extended illness. She was removed to the Arnold Moor Funeral
residence where
she will lie in state until the service hour.
Funeral services will be held at ten o'clock Tuesday morning in the Memory
Chapel of the funeral
residence. Interment will be directed in the
White Rose cemetery. Mrs. Crowley was born March 19, 1874 in Central Illinois,
and when a small
child moved with her family to Kansas, settling
in Allen county. Mr. and Mrs. Crowley moved to Washington county in 1907
when he became
associated with the National Zinc company.
He passed away in 1936. Survivors include a son, Charles Lester Crowley,
and two daughters,
Mrs. T.J. Larmore and Mrs. W.T. Dunkin, all
of Bartlesville; two brothers, Grover Coatney of Idaho and Allen Coatney,
Texas county,
Missouri; a sister, Mrs. May Hawkins, Miami;
five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
4) William Allen born January 22, 1876 in Ill married April
1, 1897 Martha E. Wonnill. He died December 5, 1859, buried Miller Cemetery.
OBITUARY: Last Rites Held Dec.
9 for W.A. Coatney, 83. A lifelong resident of Texas County, William A.
Coatney, 83 died Saturday at his home
in the Varvel community. The retired farmers
is survived by five sons, J.E. Virgil and Jesse, Willow Springs, Charley,
Gainsville and Coval,
Caldwell, Ida., a sister, Mrs. Mae Hawkins,
Miami Oka.; 23 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Services
were held Wednesday
in Elliott-Gentry chapel, Cabool, with the
Rev. Archie Hogue, officiating. Burial was in Miller Cemetery.
5) George P. born February 3, 1878 in Kansas. He
married November 31, 1897 Lola Wonnill. A tree fell on him in Cloverdale,
Arkansas November
30, 1898 leaving his widow with $1.50 and a 4 month old baby,
Minnie Dotson. Buried Cloverdale Cemetery., Puluska County, Ark.
6) John born October 22, 1880 at Mapleton Kansas
married Dora Gerth. He died August 31, 1938, at Minnie Dotson's, buried
Miller cemetery. (I have
pictures of him).
OBITUARY: John Coatney was born at Mapleton, Kansas, October 26, 1880;
died at the home of his niece, Mrs. Roland Dotson at Elk Creek, Mo,
August 31, 1938, at age of 57
years, 10 months and 5 days. He leaves to mourn for him, two sisters and
two brothers. Sisters are Mrs. Isabell
Crowley, of Bartlesville, Okla.,
and Mrs. May Hawkins, Miami, Okla; brothers, Allen Coatney, of Grogan,
Mo., and Grover Coatney,
Aberdeen, Idaho. His father, mother,
one brother, and three sisters preceded him in death. He moved to Missouri
with his parents when very
small and lived on Elk Creek around
Cabool until the death of his mother, then he went to live with his sister,
Mrs. Crowley, in Bartlesville,
Okla. He came back for a visit
with relatives and friends and became very sick with cancer of stomach.
All that loving hands could do was of
no avail; the death angel said
"come to rest" and he went to await the resurrection. He also leaves to
mourn his going a host of relatives and
friends. The body was laid to
rest in the Miller cemetery Friday morning at 10 o'clock, Bro. Edmundson
and Bro. Stickney having charge of
funeral services. Written by His

brother and uncle, John Coatney
during his sickness and after

7) Minnie born May 19, 1882 (twin) in Mapleton,
Kansas. Married March 10, 1900 Willie Stephens. She died October
4, 1926 in Drumwright Okla,
buried Miller cemetery. (I have a picture of her when she was
young)
OBITUARY: Mrs. Minnie Stephens daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Coatney, passed
away at hr home in Drumright, Oklahoma, Monday morning,
Oct. 4 at 7 o'clock. Minnie was
born at Mapleton, Kansas, May 19, 1882; died October 4, 1926; age 44 years,
4 months and 15 days. She was
married to Willie Stephens March
10, 1900. To this union were born two children, Ray Stephens and Mrs. Faye
Wheate, now of Drumright,
Oklahoma. She leaves to mourn
her departure a husband, son, daughter, two grandchildren, two sisters,
three brothers, son-in-law, aged mother
and a host of other relatives
and friends. Minnie called her loved ones around her bed and told them
she was going to die and was ready to go.
Minnie was sick about five weeks.
All was done that could be done by her loving husband and children and
other relatives who were by her
bedside when the time came for
her to go. She was a true and loving wife and mother and was loved by all
who knew her. The remains were
shipped back here for burial.
She was laid to rest in the Miller cemetery by her father and two sisters.
Funeral was conducted by Rev. J.S. Ellis.
Dearest Minnie, thou has left
us; a place is vacant in the home which never can be filled. Weep not,
dear ones, for dear Minnie is standing among
the angels today; beckoning for
her loved ones to come. And if we live true to Jesus we will meet dear
Minnie some day in that bright mansion
above, where there will be no
sorrow, pain or sad goodbye. I am sure Minnie is holding wide open the
door, waiting for her loved ones to come.

8) May born May 19, 1882 (twin) in Mapleton, Kansas,
married May 15, 1900 Joseph H. Hawkins. She died in 1969 in Miami,

1887, September 10 Kansas, Bourbon County, Mapleton Jonathan
applied for a pension but evidently did not get it for diarrhea or bloody
flux, claimed
he was treated at brigade hospital. Said he was 46; 5
ft 11 « inches tall, fair complexion; dark hair; blue eyes
1888, January 19 pension affidavit by W.M. Nesbitt, Mapleton,
Bourbon Co, KS: "That I have been intimately acquainted with Jonathan Coatney
since
the year A.D. 1877 up to the present time. We having exchanged
work with each other on farm. During this time he has not been able
to do more than
one half of an able bodyed man at farm work. The above claimant
is a tempret man in all things and has taken usually good care of his health
and is
of a very even Temperament. I have often known of his being
sick with diarrhea and bloody Flux" John Q. Reynolds of Mapleton says:
"I have known
Johnathan Courtney ever since 1877. I have worked for him a
good deal in the time. We lived neighbors and I frequently helped him when
he was
sick and not able to work. He had diarrhea and flux and was
disabled from work over one half of the time and very frequently he was
for a long time
in succession unable to do anything especially two falls in
1881 and 1882 when I helped him do his work all fall and he was never able
to do anything."

law): "I have known Jonathan Coatney since the spring of 1866 and know
that he has been
afflicted with the piles ever since our first acquaintance.

1894, June 11 Henry Glyn (Jonathan's brother-in-law) gave affidavit
for pension: "I have know the claimant since Sept. 1865. I know he
was affected
with diarrhea and piles from that date up until 1876, the last
time I saw him. I lived within 1/4 of a mile of him and worked with him.
1894, October 4 Henry Sweeten affidavit for Jonathan: "that
the claimant Jonathan Coatney was hurt while in line of duty by lifting
logs onto breastworks
at Peach Tree Creek, Georgia about July 18, 1864. In August
1864 he was taken to the hospital sick and remained there til September,
1864. But
he was not able for duty when he returned to the company.
1894, November 3 Isaac Riley gave affidavit for pension for
Jonathan that Jonathan was hurt while in line of duty by lifting logs onto
breastworks at
Peach Tree Creek, Georgia, about July 18, 1864 and in August
he was taken to the hospital sick and remained there til September 1864,
but he was
not able for duty when he returned to the company.

1926, September 14 Estate of Johnathan Coatney deceased, order
refusing letters of administration. Now, at the day comes Mrs. Ellen
Coatney and shows
the court that she is the widow of Johnathan Coatney late of
the county of Texas, deceased, who died, having at the time of his death,
personal property
in this state not greater in amount than is allowed by law as
the absolute property of the widow. To the end, therefore, that the said
Mrs. Ellen Coatney,
as such, she may be authorized and empowered to collect, sue
for and retain said property as her absolute property as provided by law,
it is ordered
that Letters of Administration on said estate be refused, unless,
on the application of creditors or other parties interested the existence
of other further
property be show.
1926, October 9 Widow's Pension application: Missouri, Texas
Co, Ellen Co age 83. She was born Aug. 19th, 1843 in Tennessee. Parents
left Tennessee
when Mrs. Coatney was a baby. She does not know town where born.
widow of Jonathan Coatney. He enlisted July 31, 1862 - no record of where
he enlisted County D Det. 23rd Reg. Mo Inft Volunteers under
Captain John W. Moore. discharged June 9th 1965. He died Sept. 10, 1926
at Grogan,
Texas County, Mo. Louisa E. Shelby married at Clarksville, Mo,
Aug. 19, 1865 by Gleen Denny and had not been previously married. He had
previous been married to Mildred Shelby (sister of claimant)
before the war opened. She died in Johnson County, Missouri in 1863. No
children under

Cabool Enterprise: July 9, 1931, front page: PIONEER LADY PASSES. Mrs.
Ellen Coatney, age 87 years 10 months and 7 days, passed
away at the home of her son, John
Coatney, Monday, July 6, 1931. Mrs. Coatney was born in Tennessee, and
moved to the Elcelsior community with
her husband, John Coatney, many
years ago. He preceded her in death in 1926. She leaves to mourn
their loss, two daughters and three sons, Mrs.
J.C. Crowley, Bartlesville, Okla.,
Mrs. J.H. Hawkins, Miami, Okla., Grover Coatney, Aberdeen, Idaho: Allen
and John Coatney of near Cabool. The
funeral services were held Wednesday
afternoon conducted by Bro. Ellis. Interment was in the Miller cemetery.
Excelsior column page 4: Mr. and
Mrs. Crowley and son of Bartlesville,
Oklahoma, Mrs. May Hawkins and daughter, Miss Victoria of Miami, Okla.,
arrived Tuesday night to attend
the funeral of their mother and
grandmother, Mrs. Coatney. The Coatney family have the sympathy of our
community.
