Bulls Gap

In 1792 John Bull received a land grant for 55 acres near the East-West passage over Bays Mountain. He operated a stage coach line (see Old Stage coach Road on Google Maps) through the passage that became known as Bulls Gap. Just before The Civil War, the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad was established in this area. During the Civil War the proximity of the railroad tracks made Bulls Gap a critical location  for both Union and Confederate forces trying to protect and utilize the railroad.  After the Civil War, the railroad continued to be the main focus of the town.
