James Harvey Browning and wife Malissa
Brooks bought the George S. Cunningham home 1905. Their son Gordon Weaver
Browning went to school in Milan and graduated 1908. He then went to Valparaiso,
Indiana and received 2 degrees, Bachelor of Science and teaching. He returned to
Gibson County to teach one year before entering Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tn.
to get a degree in
law.
He established his law practice in Huntingdon where he married Miss Ida Leach,
1921. He ran for Congress 1923, carried Miss Ida to Washington for 12 years. He
then ran for senator of Tennessee 1935 and was defeated. In 1937 he ran for
Governor and was elected. He was defeated in 1939. After serving in WW11 he ran
again 1949 and was elected for 2 terms.
This home was purchased from James Harvey Browning in 1939 by the U.S. Government
and used as office space during WW11, and the Korean conflict. It still
stands on Milan Arsenal property but is not presently used.
