MRS.Ruby FISHER,of Memphis,attended the funeral of her brother,George GARRETT,whowas brought home from France and buried in Rose Hill Cem.**************************FRIDAY MAY 6,1921DEATH--MRS.FRANK X.FOLTZ is dead.Mrs.FOLTZ is survived by her husband;threedaughters and a son.The family came here from Union City about thirty yearsago,and the children grew up here.From the very start,the community interests wereher interests.Tomorrow at 10:30 o'clock,the funeral services will be held at theChurch of the Sacred Heart,to be conducted by Father REID,assisted by FatherMARAUTH,of Memphis,after which the remains will be laid to rest in Rose HillCemetery.DEATH--EMMA JANE COPLIN,wife of W.L.COPLIN Sr.,died Monday of pneumonia,and herremains were interred at Bethel Tuesday.Deceased is survived by her husband andseven children;Dr.W.L.,T.A.,and J.H.COPLIN,of Humboldt;Mrs.J.H.BUCKNER,of neartown;and Mrs.J.T.DUNGAN,Mrs.J.R.DUNGAN,and C.G.COPLIN,of Jackson;also 16grandchildren;and three great grandchildren.MEDINA --Many friends from Medina attended the funeral services of BUD SHELTON atHope Hill Monday afternoon.He is survived by his wife;a daughter;and threesons;also two sisters,Mrs.Robert HAWKINS,of Humboldt,and Mrs.Mattie JAMES,ofMedina;and a brother,Will SHELTON,of Greenfield.MRS.AL WAINWRIGHT--aged 78,died at her home on La Salle Heights Tuesday morning at9:30.Her body was laid to rest in the Alamo Cemetery.Mrs.Will PITNER,ofTampa,Fla.,spent last week at the bedside of Mrs.WAINWRIGHT,her mother.DR.E.B.JOHNSON--was called to Lebanon Sunday on account of the death of hisfather,Rev.A.E.JOHNSON,which occurred Sunday at 10 p.m.He suffered a stroke ofparalysis sometime ago from which he never recovered.He was buried in the familyburying ground near Lebanon. **************************FRIDAY MAY 13,1921MRS.J.W.RAMSEY--died at her home on Brownsville Street last Tuesdayevening.Services were conducted at the residence Saturday,burial at OaklandCemetery.She was in her 74th year,a consistant member of the Methodist Church.Sheis survived by six daughters and one son,all of whom were with her at the last.MRS.L.L.COX--"Aunt Mary Sewell," as she was generally known,who was reported sicklast week,died and was buried at Cox's Chapel last Wednesday.She was step-motherand aunt of Messrs.W.A.,M.P.,S.L.,and T.A.COX;Mrs.J.M.CRAIG and Miss LillieCOX;also aunt of Rev.Willie SEWELL,of the M.E.Church,and hissister,Mrs.J.A.THOMAS,of this county.She was near ninety years old at herdeath.Funeral services were conducted by Mr.DRAPER,of Memphis,a member of thePastor RUSSELL Church,by request of the children.MRS.G.T.RAY--was called to Jackson Friday on account of the death of Mrs.RYAN.******************************FRIDAY MAY 20,1921A SAD ACCIDENT--occurred a mile west of town last Friday afternoon,when a tractormachine turned over on Mr.JOHN CARNE,while he was demonstrating it on the field ofAb TAYLOR and S.CRISP,killing him instantly.Services was conducted at theresidence.Local news connected to funeral: Dr.R.L.PARK and wife,ofJackson,attended the funeral and burial of Mr.John CARNE Sunday. Jimmie CARNE &wife,of Jackson,attended the funeral and burial of Mr.John CARNE Sunday.(Jimmiewas his son.) Jim HANNAH,of Louisville,Ky.,attended the funeral and burial ofMr.John CARNE Sunday. Miss Dee CARNE,of Nebraska visited her sister,Mrs.John CARNEthis week. Mrs.YOUNG attended the funeral and burial of her brother,John CARNESunday. Also attending,but relation not given was Mrs.Rose CARNE and son ofKentucky.AFTER A LONG--varied and eventful career,DR.N.I.HESS died last Saturday at hishome in Bells,aged 81 years.Dr.HESS came to Gadsden in 1866 and settled here topractice his profession.He remained here about 20 years and has lived in Bellsmany years.He leaves his fourth wife and ten children. (related item)Esq.&Mrs.W.M.DUNLAP were called to Bells Monday to attend the funeral of theirrelative,Dr.N.I.HESS.DEATH--Dr.N.I.HESS died at his home in Bells,Tenn.,May 14th after an illness ofseveral days,aged 80 years.He was born in Trenton,Tenn.,in 1840.His father andmother;Dr.N.I.HESS Sr.,and Miss Kittie HILL were married in 1839.He was educatedin what was then called Andrew College.When about 21 years of age,he and hisbrothers.Andrew and John joined the Confederate Army and served in the army untilthe close of the war.He was wounded in the shoulder at the battle ofFranklin,Tenn.At the close of the war,he and brother,Andrew studied medicine andJohn entered the ministry of the Baptist Church.Dr.HESS was greatly beloved by allhis patients as well as by the citizens of the town and community where he livedand practiced medicine for 55 years.He is survived by his wife;four sons;sixdaughters;one brother;one sister;24 grandchildren;and a host of other relativesand friends,who mourn his death. *******************************FRIDAY MAY 27,1921NEWBERN,TENN.,MAY 24TH--R.L.HUIE,38 years old,was shot and killed at 10:30 a.m.today,following an argument with Frank and Arthur TUCHER,well-known farmers of the5th district,over the trespassing of HUIE on the TUCKER cloverfield.The TUCKERbrothers were arrested on charges of murder and are in custody in Dyersburg.TIPTONVILLE,TENN.,MAY 24TH--FRANK GRIFFIN,22 years,a member of one of LakeCounty's most prominent families,was drowned about 6 p.m. today while swimming inthe "washout," a bathing pool near here.His body was recovered byDr.M.R.DONALDSON,who made five dives before he was successful.Young GRIFFIN,in thecompany of Dr.DONALDSON;Roy GRIFFIN,his brother:Walter GRIFFIN,his cousin;andWilbur WALKER,had been in swimming a short time when Roy and Walter noticed Frankwas in danger,they went to his rescue,he pulled them under twice.The water was alittle over a foot over his head,and he being a good swimmer,must have suffered acramp.He was a son of Dr.& Mrs.R.W.GRIFFIN.MR.WM.A.BRATCHER--about 65 years,died at his home here Tuesday.He had beenconfined to his room about three years from a stroke of paralysis.He leaves hiswife;sons,Dave,of Beach Bluff,Dorsey,of Corinth,Miss.,and Grover,ofGibson;daughters,Mrs.Frank WOODS and Miss Flossie BRATCHER,of Gibson.The funeralservice was held at the residence by Bro.HUEY,burial in White Rose Cemetery.UNCLE WALTER JONES--an old time and generally known and respected colored man,ofHumboldt,died Monday.His death was due to infirminities of age.He had donegardening for years and had many friends among the white people,who greatly regrethis death.MILAN,TENN.,MAY 24TH--MRS.NAOMI STEPPE,30 years,was brought here Sunday afternoonfrom Memphis,where she died in a hospital.Her home was in Bemis,Tenn.Her motherwas Mrs.COVINGTON,of Milan.She is survived by her husband;severalchildren;mother;sisters and brothers.Burial in Oakwood Cemetery.MILAN,TENN.,MAY 24TH--MRS.FANNY MAY McPHERSON,28 years,was brought here today andcarried to Popular Springs for funeral and burial.She is survived by husband;twochildren;parents,a brother and sister.MRS.ELSIE BENNETT PINDAR--wife of Mr.Ira PINDAR,died at the home of hermother,Mrs.Lillie BENNETT on Mitchell Ave.Tuesday afternoon.Mrs.PINDAR,who was asufferer of asthma,was stricken with an unusually severe attack on Monday and thiswas complicated with heart trouble.She is survived by her husband;a little babe;her mother; and a brother.Elsie BENNETT married Ira PINDAR about two years ago andwent to Florida to live.Recently they returned to Humboldt and were living withMrs.BENNETT when she died.Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.********************************FRIDAY JUNE 3,1921TRENTON; CAPT.JOHN R.DANCE--died a his home,a few miles west of townWednesday,after a long illness.Funeral services were held at the BaptistChurch,interment took place in Oakwood Cemetery.He was a Confederate veteran.Hissurviving children are Russell DANCE,of Corinth,Miss.,DreweyDANCE,Mrs.BANDY,Mrs.ROSS,Mrs.GRIGSBY and Miss Georgia DANCE.MR.JOHN E.CAMPBELL--of Humboldt,died early Saturday morning.He was 70 years oldand is survived by his wife; sons,L.R.,Zach,and J.E.Jr.; daughters,Mrs.R.I.LONG,Mrs.J.H.LANNOM,and Mrs.Roy JOHNSON;brothers,Dr.Joe CAMPBELL and Levy CAMPBELL,ofRutledge.He came to Humboldt in 1873 from Rutledge,Tenn.,was married to Miss JennyE.HESS in 1877 and lived on a farm north of town for a number of years.He came toHumboldt along in the nineties,opening a lumber yard.Burial in Rose HillCemetery.(born April 6,1851 in Grainger Co.,Tenn.,married Miss HESS onJan.7,1879,died May 28,1921.)ALAMO; UNCLE JIM PERRY--died late Wednesday afternoon at his home near MauryJunction.He was in his 88th year.Funeral services were held Thursday and hisremains laid to rest in the Perry Cemetery.John PERRY,County Court Clerk,is theson of Mr.PERRY.GADSDEN; MRS.PRIEST PERMENTER--died very suddenly last Tuesday night and herremains were given burial at Salem Wednesday.ANSWERS LAST CALL;CAPT.JOHN R.DANCE--died at his home Wednesday night,in the 16thdistrict,following a prolonged illness of several months.He had for a long timebeen a prominent citizen of Gibson County and a leader in the councils of thosewho fought in the Confederate army. He was born in 1846,near Murfreesboro,Tenn.,hisparents later moving to West Tennessee and settling eight west of Trenton.At theage of 15,when a mere school boy,he enlisted in the Confederate army as avolunteer. After it was over,he married in 1865,Sarah Elizabeth DODSON,who died inFebruary,1870,leaving a baby boy,Russell,who now lives in Corinth,Miss. A secondwedding occurred in December 1870,when he married Miss Martha RachaelHILLSMAN,daughter of the late M.HILLSMAN,who performed the ceremony of not onlythis,but his former marriage. Ten years of his life were spent inBrownsville,Tenn.,where he engaged in the mercantile business,but upon theepidemic of yellow fever arising, he returned to Gibson County,where he spent theremainder of his life on the farm just three miles from Trenton. His oldestson,from the second marriage,Hillsman DANCE, died December 1912,and adaughter, Mrs.Louise FLOWERS,died in March,1917. The surviving childrenare; Russell; Drury DANCE and Miss Georgie DANCE,who reside in the DANCE home westof Trenton; Mrs.H.W.BANDY and Mrs.R.E.ROSS,of Trenton; and Mrs.H.L.GRIGSBY, ofDickson. At his request,the funeral was preached by son-in-law, Rev.F.C.FLOWERS, ofLake Charles,LA. His second wife died in May,1916.********************************FRIDAY JUNE 10,1921GIBSON;MRS.P.B.JONES AND DAUGHTER--Margaret,left Monday for St.Louis,where theywill attend the funeral of her brother-in-law,MAJ.GEO.E.HILYARD,who lost his lifein the recent war in France.GIBSON;WRAPPED IN THE FLAG OF THE COUNTRY--for which he gave his life,the body ofPRENTIS FLY arrived today at 12:26 from the long journey overseas,accompanied by aU.S.A.escort from Hoboken,N.Y.,where this body with many others landed June 2nd.Hewas a son of Mr.& Mrs.L.E.FLY,of this city.On his arrival overseas,he was takensick and died in a hospital un France in October,1918.Burial will be in White RoseCemetery.Besides his parents,he is survived by one sister,Miss Zelma FLY; FredFLY,deputy sheriff,of Gibson County,E.B.FLY,of Newbern,and Earl FLY,of MadisonCounty. *********************************FRIDAY JUNE 17,1921MR.A.C.BLAKE--died at his home in Jackson Wednesday evening.Funeral services heldat the home and the remains will be brought to Humboldt Friday and buried in RoseHill Cemetery.He leaves his mother;wife;and little daughter.GIBSON;MR.J.W.BUFORD--about 55 years old,died at his home east of here Fridayafter a long illness.He leaves four daughters.Funeral services were held at WhiteRose Cemetery,where the body was laid to rest beside his wife,who died about fouryears ago.GADSDEN;MOSE FRANK COX--of Oliver Springs,died on June 4th.He was a brother ofMrs.M.E.RICHARDSON,Mrs.R.B.GRIGGS and J.R.COX.He was reared to manhood in thiscommunity and resided here a number of years before going to East Tennessee,wherehe made his home for more than twenty years.COLUMBIA,TENN.,JUNE 12TH--Thrown from their automobile when it plunged over a 25-foot embankment on the Nashville pike,near Duck River bridge today;PerryBENNETT,Earle HALLE and James SIMPSON are dead,and Carl JOHNSON is in a localhospital.COXVILLE--Our hearts were saddened last Saturday evening when news came to us thatour brother,Frank,was dead.The first to break a circle of brothers and sisters ofseven for over fifty years,when sweet little sister,Dora was called away.MOSEFRANK COX was born in Gibson County 69 years ago,but for the past several yearshad made his home in the eastern part of this state,Oliver Springs,where he servedcontinuously as Magistrate and City Recorder for over 20 years.Besides a wife andthree children,still in their teens,he leaves two married sons;James C.COX,of thisplace,and John R.COX,of Oliver Springd;and four married daughters,Mrs.HUTCHISON,ofHarriman,Mrs.COZART,of Cincinniti, Mrs.E.S.COX,and Mrs.J.T.JAMES,of thisplace.Surviving brothers & sisters are;Mrs.M.E.RICHARDSON,ofGadsden,Mrs.R.B.GRIGGS,of Mason Grove,J.C.COX,of Ridgely,J.R.COX,ofCoxville,Mrs.D.I.FAIRLESS,of Trenton and Mrs.Tom WILLIAMS,of Sanford,Fla.UNION CITY,TENN.,JUNE 14;JAKE CALDWELL--57,committed suicide this morning byhanging himself with a sheet,according to a telegram just received here from thehospital at Bolivar,Tenn.,where he was carried yesterday.He is survived by hiswife;three sons,John,Jake and Benjamin;three daughters,Grace,Mattie,and Etna;onebrother,John;and one sister,Mrs.Etna MARSHALL.************************************FRIDAY JUNE 24,1921COXVILLE ITEMS--Word came to us last Thursday that W.T.COX was dead.He was thelast survivor of a large and well-known family,his parents,Mose and MaryCOX,having settled here in the year 1826,and reared a family of twelve children tobe grown and married.He was 70 years old and for a number of years had made hishome in Round Rock and Bartlett,Texas,where he engaged in the mercantilebusiness,until a few years ago,when he retired from active duty,good fortunehaving smiled upon him,besides blessing him with a good wife;two sons;and adaughter,who survive him. ************************************THURSDAY JUNE 30,1921MR.O.C.SHARP IS DEAD--He died at the home of his sister,Mrs.E.L.FOX on Wednesdaymorning.He had been in ill health for more than a year.He was 65 years old and issurvived by one daughter,Mrs.J.W.McGLATHERY; three sisters,Mrs.E.L.FOX, Mrs.ThomasPOLK,of Jackson,and Mrs.R.N.WARMACK,of St.Louis.Born and raised inHumboldt.Services were held at the Methodist Church,after which the remains willbe buried beside those of his wife,who died several years ago.GADSDEN;THE REMAINS OF TOM ARMES,who was killed in action in France,reachedGadsden Saturday and were conveyed to the home of his brother,S.H.ARMES.Funeralservices were at Raines Cemetery Sunday afternoon.The pall-bearers in uniformwere:Robert BLURTON,Leonard BOYD,Lonnie MOBLEY,Claude WILLIAMS,Earl DUNLAP,HarryWILSON,Oscar BOYD,Elbert BROWN,Charley SIMMONS and Roy HUMPHREYS.ALAMO--Our community was saddened this morning when it was learned that D.WELLSHARRIS had died at his home on West Main Street at 7:45.MRS.MARY JANE LONG--born March 19,1859,widow of B.C.LONG,died at her home nearOakfield,June 25th,of bronchial pneumonia.She was 62 years of age,survived byMrs.George L.LONG,Miss Rosie ELLISON,Mrs.Ezra D?LY,and W.B.,J.C.,and O.C.LONG;onebrother,three sisters,four stepchildren and a number of grandchildren.Burial atAntioch.DEATH--Another faithful soldier of the Cross has laid his armour down and put onhis robe and crown.On June 21,1921,as the evening shadows were gathering,the DeathAngel visited the home of G.W.WILLIAMS and claimed for its victim,his agedFATHER,SAMUEL B.WILLIAMS.He was born July 6,1836.He married Miss Sarah OpheliaRUST July 30,1868.To this union were born seven children;G.W.WILLIAMS,Mrs.LeeCRAIG,Mrs.R.H.BARNETT,J.R.WILLIAMS,of Gibson County,Mrs.W.S.STEPHENSON,ofMemphis,R.E.WILLIAMS,of Paris,and C.S.WILLIAMS,of El Paso,Texas,all present exceptC.S.,who was inable to be here;30 grandchildren;and three great-grandchildren.Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.(related item--Mr.& Mrs.Thomas GLASSand R.E.WILLIAMS,of Paris,and Mrs.W.S.STEVENSON,of Memphis,attended the funeral oftheir father and grandfather,Mr.S.B.WILLIAMS,last Wednesday.)MR.PAT DARETY--of the Pleasant Hill neighborhood,received a message a few days agoannouncing the death of his sister,MRS.JANE HUGHES,who died at the home of herdaughter,Mrs.A.D.LAMOINE,in Dallas,Tex.MRS.HUGHES formerly lived in Humboldt.DR.J.R.CARROLL--died at his home in Henderson Wednesday evening,after a lingeringillness of several months.He was a resident of Humboldt many years.He is survivedby his wife; JARRETT was plowing in a field,when MATHIS got off a wagon near the linebetween the SENTER and MATHIS farms,and shot the farmer dead. DR.E.D.VAN SYCKEL--died at his home Sunday after a short illness.Funeralservices were held Tuesday from the residence.The remains were taken toCanton,ILL.,for interment.For many years,he was a prominent dentist at thisplace.His wife died July 17,1921.GADSDEN--"OLD KATE,"the red mule belonging to J.D.PORTER,died last week.He hadowned this mule nearly a quarter of a century,had driven her in his courting,andof course was attached to her,and is grieved to give her up.Sympathy isextended.(no disrespect,but as a true animal lover myself;I felt the need toinclude this obit.SMH.)MRS.GEORGE STEVENSON--died Tuesday morning at her home three miles north ofBells,after several months illness.She is survived by several children.Intermenttook place at Cypress Church Wednesday.*********************************************FRIDAY NOVEMBER 11,1921MR.DAVE G.STEWART--one of Humboldt's old and respected citizens,died at his homein East Humboldt on Friday,November 4th,after an illness of many months.His deathoccurred at 4 o'clock in the afternoon and his family were about his bedside whenthe end came.Deceased is survived by his wife and two sons and onedaughter,Mrs.W.R.ROGERS.The funeral was conducted by E.B.RAMSEY at the familyresidence,after which the remains were buried in Rose Hill Cemetery.He was 69years of age.*********************************************FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18,1931MRS.MARY PARISH--died at the home of her grandson,Mr.Eddie M.BOWERS,on 18thAvenue,Thursday morning at 5:45 after a short illness.Mrs.PARISH was 76 years ofage and is survived by one son,Oscar PARISH,of Kansas City,Mo.,and severalgrandchildren.The three grandchildren she reared are as follows:Mrs.Clara PARISHPLUMLEE,of Jackson,Tenn.,Mrs.Mary Lou WIGGAN,of Centerpoint,Ark.,and Mr.EddieM.BOYERS,of this city.Mrs.PARISH was the wife of the Late Tom PARISH.DIES IN NASHVILLE; PROF.J.B.CUMMINGS--formerly of this city,but for severalyears,a resident of Trenton,died at a hospital in Nashville on Thursday of lastweek and the remains were brought to Humboldt and interred Friday morning.Hetaught school in Humboldt some years ago and was married here to Miss McAFEE.Laterhe made his home in Trenton and was elected to the office of County Superintendentof Education,which office he filled a number of years.For the past few years,hewas Truant Officer for the County.Recently he became ill and was taken toNashville for treatment.He leaves his wife and several children.GIBSON--One of the saddest deaths that has occurred in our community was that ofMRS.REBECCA MEALS,who died from injuries received falling from a buggy,an accountof which appeared in this paper.She lingered for nearly two weeks and on Monday ofthis week,she succumbed.The funeral service was held at the Methodist ChurchTuesday,after which the body was laid to rest in White Rose Cemetery beside herlate husband.She leaves two daughters,Mrs.D.H.RUNGAN and Mrs.L.D.BUTLER;threesons,Thomas,Herbert and Wildord MEALS;two brothers,Dee JONES,of Milan and SamJONES,of Texas;and one sister,Mrs.JACOBS,of Dyer.HOMER BRYANT--a progressive young farmer,of District No.5,died Friday evening athis home in Bells,after several days illness.He leaves a wife;two children;hisfather;
