our community and took one ofour best citizens,Mr.JOHN M.OAKLEY.He was about 58 years of age;he leaves hiswife,eight children and one brother.His body was laid to rest in Oak GroveCemetery beneath a mound of flowers.GIBSON--Jas.H.BASS was called to Nashville Monday to attend the funeral of hiscousin,William RICHARDSON.GIBSON--The young daughter of Mr.& Mrs.John WRIGHT died Monday at their home nearJackson.The body was brought here Tuesday and buried in White Rose Cemetery.GIBSON;CARLOS B.CHAMBERLAIN--son of Jesse CHAMBERLAIN,died Tuesday at his home inHumboldt.He is survived by his wife,one child;his parents,brothers and sisters.MEDINA--Mr.J.W.MAYO and family attended the funeral of Mrs.Laura PEEK at MilanFriday.MEDINA--Mr.& Mrs.D.G.BOYD attended funeral services for Mrs.Henry BOYD atTrexevant Monday. *************************FRIDAY JANUARY 19,1923LOSES WIFE AND SON--The shocking news reached Humboldt this (Friday) morning thatMRS.CHARLIE NORDSTRUM and son,CARL PETER,had died at an early hour of the morningof pneumonia.Mr.NORDSTRUM himself is suffering from the same disease and hisfriends are uneasy at his condition.Despite the pain of the disease,he continuedto look after his wife and son until the end,and came to town to attend to thefuneral arrangements.The NORDSTRUM family had lived on their farm for a number ofyears,it being about three and one half miles northeast of Humboldt.Funeralservices will be held at the family home,burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.NEGRO BOY BURNS TO DEATH--PRESLEY SHARP,colored,and about 21 years of age,burnedto death at the family home near Campbell's lumber yard Thursday.It is supposedthe boy,who was subject to epileptic attacks,suffered an attack and fell into thefire.He was alone when it happened.PASSES TO REWARD--MR.L.J.JARRELL died at the home of his son,C.W.JARRELL onCentral Avenue North Sunday afternoon,after a brief illness of influenza.Deceasedwas 79 years of age and had lived in Humboldt since 1870.He came here from WilsonCounty.His wife died some years ago and he made his home with his son,who is hisonly surviving child.He is also survived by two brothers,Robert JARRELL,ofNashville and Julian JARRELL,of Wilson County.He was a veteran of the Civil Warand saw active service for the Confederacy.He was with Gen.Morgan's Cavalry in thefamous Ohio raid.Funeral services were held at the residence,burial in Rose HillCemetery.MR.BEN F.CRADDOCK--died after a brief illness of pneumonia Tuesday morning at hishome a few miles west of Humboldt.He is survived by his wife;a son;a daughter;fourbrothers,W.R.,James,Fred,and Jessie CRADDOCK;one sister,Mrs.J.W.PERRY,of MauryJunction,Tenn.He was about 32 years of age,a son of the late J.F.CRADDOCK.Funeralservices were held at the family home,burial in Collinsworth Cemetery.(LATER)--MRS.CRADDOCK died of pneumonia at 9 o'clock this (Friday) morning.The funeral willtake place sometime tommorrow.MEDINA--MR.& MRS.ELMER COATES have the sympathy of their many friends in the lossof their infant daughter,NANCY ELIZABETH,whose death occurred on Monday morningfrom bronchial pneumonia.The body was carried to Greenfield,their former homeTuesday for interment.MEDINA--A gloom was cast over Medina when it was learned that MRS.BERTHA WILLIFORDTURNER,wife of Joe B.TURNER,postmaster of this place was dead.Her death occurredTuesday Monday andgiven interment. ************************FRIDAY JANUARY 26,1923ALAMO;TOM RYE WALLACE--aged 8 years,youngest son of Mrs.Littie WALLACE,died Sundaymorning of influenza and pneumonia.He was sick only about a week.InNovember,Mrs.WALLACE lost a grown son by death on the B.& N.W.Railroad.MRS.COGBURN and children,of near Gibson Wells,attended the funeral of hernephew,Tom Rye WALLACE.MRS.MARY TODD CRADDOCK--wife of the late Ben F.CRADDOCK,died at the family homeFriday morning,January 19th at 9 a.m.,after which the remains were laid to rest inthe Collinsworth Cemetery.She was a member of the Baptist Church at Bethal.Herdeath is doubly sad for the little son and daughter,the mother's death followingwithin three days of the father's.She is also survived by her parents,Mr.&Mrs.Robert TODD and several sisters and brothers.N.P."NICK" HAMILTON--died on Saturday,January 20th at his home three miles east ofHumboldt,after a short illness of pneumonia.The funeral service was held at ason of the late Judge Henry W.and Mrs.Lucy COLE McCORRY.He leaves hiswife,Mrs.Sadie McCORRY;two sons,Thomas,Jr.,and Mercer McCORRY,of Jackson;fivesisters and a brother.WILLIAM INGRAM,JACKSON BANKER,DROPS DEAD--at his home on Chester streettonight,January 28th.He was born in Jackson and was about 50 years old.Hiswife,Mary JONES INGRAM,who survives him is a daughter of the late Dr.J.T.JONES.Heis also survived by two daughters,Miss Alice Isabel INGRAM and Miss Mary JonesINGRAM.JUDGE D.W.HERRING IS DEAD AT JACKSON--formerly consul to Honduras during the firstAdministration of President Cleveland,and for more than 40 years a leading memberof the West Tennessee Bar,passed away at his home here Sunday.Born inSavannah,Hardin County,in 1852,he lived in Jackson since through nearly a year.Hewas connected with the Eastern Hospital for the Insane near Knoxville when hesuffered an attack of heart trouble.Funeral services were held at thehome,conducted by Rev/MAXEDON,after which interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.Hewas 62 years of age,had lived in Humboldt for twenty years,survived by hiswife,Mrs.Annie PALMER THOMPSON;a sister,Mrs.J.N.ANDREWS,of Memphis;abrother,Mr.Marion THOMPSON,of Millington,Tenn.,also his brother-in-law,Judge JohnW.PALMER,of Memphis.ACCIDENTLY KILLED;LULA,MISS.,JANUARY 30--T.LAMAR NEWHOUSE,31,was electrocuted athis home here today,while operating an electric iron.It is believed thatMr.NEWHOUSE was attempting to detach the wire and came into contact to an exposedpart.The accident occurred about 6:45 o'clock.He was married,but had nochildren.He served as Express agent at this place.He came here fromHumboldt,Tenn.,and his parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.P.NEWHOUSE still live there.DUAL MURDER LAID TO PUPPY LOVE,REVENGE--Memphis,Tenn.,Jan.29th.To "puppy love,"and a desire for revenge,the police ascribe the murder of pretty Mrs.RuthMcELWAINE TUCKER & Duncan WALKER,19,a traveling salesman of Paducah,Ky.Theirbodies were found by the side of a lonely road four miles from the city Sundaymorning.WALKER's body was slumped behind the steering wheel of the auto,afterthree bullets fired through the glass in the rear of the car had found marks inhis back and head.The girl lay face down,20 feet away.A bullrt had struck her inthe back of the head as she was fleeing the scene.Fingernail marks on her wristsshowed she had struggled with her slayer.MRS.MARY E.SMITH--wife of L.A.SMITH,died at 12:10 o'clock Wednesday morning,aftera short illness of pneumonia.after a funeral service conducted by Rev.KIRKLAND,theremains were laid to rest at Old Gibson.She is survived by her husband and foursons.She was in her 29th year.ANTIOCH & BAKER'S CHAPEL--On Wednesday morning last,a gloom of sorrow was castover the community,when the death of MRS.ALICE BAKER MASON was announced.Funeralservices were conducted at Antioch Church,of which she was a member,by Rev.NUNNERYand the remains were laid to rest association,a fewminutes after delivering his speech,heart trouble being ascribed as the cause.FRIENDSHIP,TENN.,FEBRUARY 2--LARRY MONTAGUE,21,died at his home near MauryCity,this county today.His wife and four children survuve him.Burial will be inBells,where he formerly resided.FRIENDSHIP,TENN.,FEBRUARY 2--ESQ.W.W.WHITBY,75,former member of Crockett Countycourt,died at his home in the 15th District of this county of pneumonia.Burialwill be at Bethesda.LEXINGTON,TENN.,FEBRUARY 3--Wednesday of this week,Dr.J.M.ARNOLD,a localphysician,was called to the home of Jesse JONES,on the farm of John YOUNG,nearLife,five miles west of Lexington.When Dr.ARNOLD reached the JONES home,he foundMrs.JONES so low,that she died while he was there,after prematurely giving birthto twin babies.MR.JONES was lying in bed in the same room.He was known to besick,but was thought to be resting.On examination by Dr.ARNOLD,he was found tohave been dead for several hours. **************************FRIDAY weeks.Her death was caused by infirmities of old age.Funeralservices were conducted at the Methodist Church by Rev.MAXEDON.The remains werelaid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery beside her husband.She was born November11,1839 in Crockett County,near Gadsden.She lived there until she marriedRev.R.H.BURNS,in 1863,in a short while after their marriage,they moved toGibson.At the time of her death,she was in her 84th year.She was a widow early inlife,and in addition to her five children,she reared five grandchildren and twostep-children.She is survived by her daughter,with whom she resided;oneson,T.L.BURNS,of Gibson;one brother,T.G.H.DUNGAN,of West Palm Beach,Fla.,and fivegrandchildren.THOMAS BOLING,JR--died at the home of his mother,Mrs.Sallie CAMPBELLBOLING,Wednesday night,after an illness of several weeks of influenza andpneumonia.On account of the illness of Mrs.BOLING's little girl,Margaret,theremains of her son were carried to the home of her step-daughter,Mrs.ZachCAMPBELL,and funeral services were held at this home Thursday and the remains werelaid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery.Thomas was nine years of age and was in 2ndgrade at school.He were laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery.This dear littlebaby was only one month,fifteen days old.MRS.SUE SADLER--died at the home of her nephew,Mr.Cleveland FITZGERALD on route#4,Saturday,February 17th at noon.Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock,funeral serviceswere conducted by Rev.RIGGS,after which the remains were laid to rest in Rose HillCemetery.At the time of her death,Miss SADLER was in her Mr.GRIGGS was born and reared near Trenton and was 23years of age.The explosion of the plant was so intense that no trace of themen,machinery or building was left.A gaping hole in the ground was the daughter,Mrs.Frank WOODS.Some months ago she was stricken withparalysis and two weeks ago she suffered the second stroke from which she neverrecovered.The funeral service was held at the residence,the body was laid to restin White Rose Cemetery.She leaves three sons,Dave, Dorsey,and Grover BRATCHER;andtwo daughters,Mrs.Frank WOODS,of Gibson and Mrs.Richard ARNOLD,of Bells.GIBSON--Mr.& Mrs.W.C.THOMPSON received a telegram from Kilso,Wash.,stating thattheir son,Paul had been burned to death.He joined the U.S.Army five years ago andsaw service overseas,but returned to Kilso after the war was over and marriedthere.He had planned a visit home with his bride next month.The body was buried atKilso.Besides his wife,he is survived by his parents and several sisters andbrothers.KILLS WIFE AND BABE,THEN SUICIDES--JOHN A.ROE,of Humboldt,shot and instantlykilled his wife,GAZELLE ROE,and mortally wounded his baby daughter,DORIS GAZELLEROE,at a residence in Memphis Monday morning about 9 o'clock,and then placing thepoint of his pistol to his temple,blew out his own brains.The baby was carried toa hospital where she died four hours after the shooting.Young ROE's wife left himabout three months ago,going to the home of one of her sisters,Mrs.HARRISON,inMemphis.ROE went to Memphis it is said,ti try and induce the wife to return homewith him.Mrs.ROE evidently promised to return with him,as a partially packedsuitcase gave mute evidence.The promise was probably given through fear,as Mrs.ROEsoon slipped out and started to gain protection,carrying her baby with her.Just asshe had gotten in front of the home of J.M.LAMMEY at 212 Cedar St.,Chelsa,ROEbegan to overtake her.Greatly fearing him,Mrs.ROE ran into the LAMMEY home,cryingout to hide her.ROE ran in after her,overtaking her in the dining room he shother,the ball taking effect in her head.She fell to the floor mortally wounded ordead.The infant fell under her and it's temple was crushed.ROE then stood over herbody and fired another shot or two into her body.One of the shots passed entirelythrough the body of the woman and then through the baby.Capt.LEE ordered ROE to raise his hands which he did,placing the gun to his headand fired.The bodies were taken in charge by Collins-Sturla Funeral Home andprepared for burial.All three were brought to Humboldt Monday night,accompanied byMr.J.W.ROE,father of John W.ROE and City Marshal SENTER,who had gone to Memphis onthe first train following the tragedy.The bodies were taken to the former home ofthe dead from which place funeral services were held,burial in Rose HillCemetery.John A.ROE was reared in Humboldt and was one of a family of severalchildren.He was married to Gazelle GULLETTE about three years,and one child,theone killed,blessed the union.MR.J.H.BURRESS--died at his home near Rutherford Monday,and the body was broughtto the home of Mr.Collins BURRESS Monday evening and buried in the family lot inFriendship Cemetery Tuesday morning.Mr.BURRESS had been in poor health for manymonths and the cause of his death was Brights'Disease.He was born March14th,1864,was 59 years of age,was born and reared near Milan,the son of SolomonBURRESS.He taught school with the exception of eight years that he served asCounty Court Clerk and for the past two years has been teaching in the 19thdistrict.He was married to Miss Mabel NETHERLY in 1905,and to this union four boysand three girls were born.IN MEMORY--MARY L.EAVES,age 79 years,9 months,and 18 days,departed this life onThursday afternoon,July 5th,after an to kindnessand deeds of charity.After the close of the war,he came home and began lookingafter the welfare of his mother,dependent sisters and little brothers,never onceforgetting them long enough to think of marrying and rearing himself a family.Ofthe formerly large family,only one brother,K.C.PATTERSON,of Coxville,survives him.GIBSON--MRS.LUCETTA CAROLINA DAVIS,70, wife of the late W.G.DAVIS,died August16th,at her home on Main Street,after several months illness.Mrs.DAVIS was bornFebruary 5,1853 in Athens,Ala.She professed religion and joined Eldad BaptistChurch when quite young.In 1893 she moved her membership to Gibson.She was unitedin marriage to W.G.DAVIS August 13th,1879,and was the mother of six children,fiveof whom survive; Rev.Roswell DAVIS,of Memphis,Misses Olive,Lizzie,Gladys and MaryDAVIS of Gibson; one brother,Joe PRICE,of Manilia,Ark.,also survives her.The bodywas laid to rest in White Rose Cemetery.IN MEMORY OF MRS.KATIE SPAIN AND DAUGHTER--Mrs.SPAIN was laid to rest on December24th,1921.On December 22nd,a cyclone past over Bastrop,La.,and claimed for one ofit's victims,Mrs.Katie SPAIN,wife of Oscar SPAIN.She left a two brothers,John M.SENTER and Judge J.D.SENTER,also of Humboldt.Allthese were by her bedside during her illness except her father,who was seriouslyill at the same time.Funeral services were held at the residence,burial in RoseHill Cem. ************************FRIDAY DECEMBER 7,1923ALAMO--Mrs.Henry EDENTON received the message Friday morning that herfather,DR.STINSON,of Lexington,had died suddening.TRAFFIC ACCIDENT FATAL--MR.SAMUEL S.CANTRELL,58,received infuries in a trafficaccident Tuesday afternoon,which resulted in his death Wednesday afternoon at4:30.He was driving east on Mitchell street with a buggy and horse and is said tohave been on the wrong side of the street.Bob RAGAN,colored,who drives a taxi forRagan & Bennett,left the O.K.filling station and turned onto MitchellStreet,headed on the right side of the thoroughfare,but seeing that there would beno room to pass,attempted to turn and pass on the wrong side of the buggy,when thelatter vehicle was struck and tilted.Mr.CANTRELL was either thrown or attempted tojump and struck the curb with great force.While RAGAN is technically guilty ofviolating a city law,some witnesses stated that this was done trying to prevent anaccident.Funeral services were held Thursday.He leaves a wife and severalchildren.MEDINA--Many friends from Medina attended the funeral of MR.EARL THOMPSONconducted by Rev.WEST at Antioch Monday afternoon.He lived east of town in theFriendship community.He was 42 years of age,is survived by his wife,one child,anaged father,two sisters,and three brothers.MEDINA--Friends are saddened Wednesday morning to learn of the sudden death ofMR.ABE McFARLAND,son of Mr.& Mrs.John McFARLAND,living east of town on the SpringCreek road.Funeral plans are not complete.BELLS R.F.D.No.3--MRS.HOMER CROSSNOE died last Thursday morning at her home threemiles east of Bells,after several weeks illness.She was 28 years of age,leaves herhusband and two small children.Burial at Cypress Church. *************************FRIDAY DECEMBER 14,1923ITEMS FROM ROUTE 10--MRS.TOM WEBB,nee JAMES,aged 47 years,after long sufferingwith cancer,died Monday evening,Dec.10,in the home of her daughter,Mrs.AlexHOLLAND,of Benton County and was buried Tuesday afternoon in the family cemeteryfour miles west of Humboldt.Besides one aged brother,William Henry JAMES;
