LINEAGE OF DAVID CROCKETT

FRONTIERSMAN, LEGISLATOR, STATESMAN

Contributed by Margaret Nolen Nichol

This lineage of David Crockett has been compiled from various sources and should be checked with substantuating documentation before adding to your charts. This is not one of my lines of descent, so time has not been taken to document each person entered. It should be a guide to point you in a direction for searching for your ancestor. My interest in David Crockett has cumulated over the years because I was born in a county named for him, and a town that bears the name, Alamo. The naming of this county and town, showed the high regard that the people of the area still held for this frontiersman called, "the people's friend." Anyone descended from or related to this legend can be proud.

There are ten generations given in this chart. At the end is an index that will facilitate an easy check for researching an individual. Notes have been left intact to give some knowledge of the migration of these families as they spread through the states.

Notes for Antoine Crocketagne

By tradition, Antoine Crocketagne was one of the handsomest men in southern France. He drew the personal attention of King Louis, by his fine personal appearance and love of duty. The King was eager to retain him in his service and placed him second in command of the household guards. He was given this commission, in 1664, when he was 21. It was there, in 1669, that he met, among many of the nobility, the beautiful lady of the court, Louise de Sais. Antoine Crocketagne resigned his commission as second in command of the King's household guards, in order to establish a home of his own. It was through the influence of the Maury family who he was working for, as a commercial agent in the wine and salt trade of southern France, that he was converted to the Protestant faith. It was ordered, in 1672, that all heretices (Hugenots) leave the south of France within twenty days. Antoine, with his wife and infant son, Gabriel, fled across the English Channel and remained in England for a short time, and shortly, thereafter fled to Ireland. To escape their French identity, they changed their name to Crockett.

Notes for David Davy Crockett

When Davy Crockett was twelve years old, he left his home to travel to Front Royal, Virginia on a cattle drive. From there he went on to Baltimore, after being made an offer to drive cattle. He didn't return home until he was fifteen years old, about 1801, and found John Crockett in debt in the amount of $86.00. Davy worked the debt off and began working for John Kennedy, the man who his father had been indebted to. It was while working for John Kennedy that he worked out an arrangement, for a six month's period, to work for two days and go to school for four days each week. After Davy married Polly Finley, he worked for Kennedy for several more years and then decided to more into new territory.

After leaving his father and mother in Greene county, David Crockett and his new wife, Polly, moved into the Duck and Elk river section of Lincoln county on the head of Mulberry Fork. He began to distinguish himself as a hunter. He lived there during the years of 1809-1810, then moved to Franklin county and settled on Beans Creek, where he remained until the close of the War of 1812. When the Creek Indians opened hostilities by butchery at Fort Mimms, 10 Aug 1812, the Militia was called for the purpose of raising volunteers. Davy volunteered. He was taken into Captain Jones' Mounted Vols. They went to Beatty Springs where David Crockett went with Major Gibson across the Tennessee River into the Creek nation as a spy. David chose George Russell, son of Major Russell, as a partner. They returned safely and reported to General Coffee. David and 800 of General Coffee's volunteers crossed the Tennessee River through Huntsville, Alabama, and on the river to Muscle Shoals and Melton's Bluff, next to Black Warrior's town, near the present city of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. David Crockett asked permission of General Coffee to go hunting and there he killed a bear. He fought in the battle of Fort Strother, Fort Talledega, and the Battle of Talledega. He then joined the army for the Florida Expedition and rejoined General Russel again to do battle with the British.

When David Crockett returned to Tennessee, he found his wife, Polly, dying. After her death he obliged to marry Elizabeth Patton, who had been left with two children. They moved from Lawrence county to the head of Shoal Creek where he was appointed magistrate when the Legislature added Giles county, he was elected Colonel of a regiment and became known as Col. Crockett. He was elected to the Legislature in 1821. After his term in office, he moved his family to Gibson County in West Tennessee.
