Nancy:
Thank you for your e-mail re: the THS. At this time we do not have much of
interest to post, but here is an update.
All the archival and print holdings of the THS, including genealogical
materials, are at the TSLA. There is none at our administrative office in
the War Memorial Building.
The TSLA web pages have a general listing of the holdings -- I don't believe
any actual documents are on-line yet, except a few of broad interest.
The TSLA reference room number is 615/741-2764.
I believe the library will be closed Dec. 23-26.
Re: the Tennessee Encyclopedia, the THS is completely out of stock (we had taken 5,000 of the 13,000 run). Persons interested in the book should be able to find it in most Tennessee book stores, or they can call our publishing partner,
Rutledge Hill Press at 800/234-4234.
Sales have been brisk, and at this time about 3,500 copies remain. Of course,
the holiday season will create greater demand for the book, so anyone wanting
a copy should act soon. We do not know at this time if the book will be
reprinted. We have been asked about electronic formats for the book, and
at this time there are no plans for a CD-ROM or an on-line version.
The newest issue of the Tennessee Histroical Quarterly came out this week
(Fall 1998) and contains the following articles, plus 7 book reviews::
"White Knight for Civil Rights?: The Civil Rights Record of Senator Albert A. Gore, Sr." by Kyle Longley, Arizona State University
"A Breath of Fresh Air: Segregation, Parks, and Progressivism in Nashville, Tennessee, 1900-1920" by Craig Allan Kaplowitz, Vanderbilt University
"George Dickel Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey: The Story Behind the Label" by Kay Baker Gaston, Springfield
"Undermining the TVA: George Berry, David Lilienthal, and Arthur Morgan" by Aaron D. Purcell, University of Maryland
The THQ is a benefit of membership in the THS; annual dues are $35, and
anyone is welcomed as a member.
Thanks for your interest in the THS. Happy Holidays!
Ann Toplovich
