I'm new to the list, having just found info on a pension record that my GGma was born in Difficult in 1871/72. Could someone direct me on where to look to find her family??Her name was Sarah Palestine Wallace, possible father Franklin Wallace. I have been unable to find them on a census.
Thanks,

Who did she marry?
Do you have birth dates on her?
Perhaps some of us have her listed in a marriage but don't have a maiden name for her. If we had more info, perhaps we might could find her & it would help both of us.

Subject: [TNSMITH-L] Lee/Lea, Smith County, 1800's

Hi,
We are searching for the family of William T. Lee/Lea, who was born in the early 1820's in Tenn. He married in Wilson County in 1840 to Sina/Sarah Davis and in 1857 to Elizabeth Oakley. He lived in the Watertown/Commerce area of Wilson County, not far from the Smith County line. It is possible that his family came from Smith County, so we are trying to sort out the Lee/Lea families that were there around this time.
If any one has any information about Lee/Lea's in Smith County we would appreciate your help. Just figuring out how they are all related might help us narrow down the search. We are hoping to plan a trip to that area, as well as the State Archives, this summer, but in the meantime are trying to get some work done. Thanks.

Several years ago I corresponded via PRODIGY with a man named Ron Logue of Louisville, KY who was a descendant of Hugh Bradley Austin, who was the son of Ephraim Austin, who was the son of Levi Austin of Smith County.

I have tried to re-establish a line of communication with Ron but cannot find an E-mail or snail-mail address. Does any one have contact with Ron Logue?.

As an aside I am anxious to contact any one who is descended from Hugh Bradley Austin, born Smith County, 25 July 1857.

I would like to know the price and availability of these publications.

Hi Carmelita,
Thanks for all the great data you sent. None of the families seem to be connected to my line . . . at least not that I know of yet, but I do know that somewhere in the Smith County Courthouse in Carthage, there are some court records about my gggrandfather EGBERT H. BRASSELL . . . at least that's what I've been told by a distant relative who was working on a completely different line. The records AREN'T pretty I know but I would dearly love to know if you happen to see any there. Are you in Smith County or did you order the film from a different location. I have been unable to trace my family further back than Smith County but I know they were in Dixon Springs, Smith County 1860 census. Your records might not be for that late but I think that he was there in the late 1830s and 1840s.
Thanks for anything you might see. I'm in Minnesota and if you need any records from this area I'd be happy to swap with you if you need any looked up.

I know a little about the HARPER family. James HARPER (below) married into my PATTERSON family. There were several Matthew's, one a son of James, and another (other than the one you mentioned) was I think James' uncle. I remember seeing a lot on the family at the State Library in Nashville. Incidentally, these HARPERs were the family that originally owned Harper's Ferry (of Civil War fame) in Virgnia.

I've only been to Smith county once, last summer. The towns are very small by most standards. Carthage is the largest city in the county. It doesn't have a few regular large cemeteries. There are instead many very small family plots, sometimes in a cow pasture, sometimes at the end of a dirt or gravel road. I found one of my family cemeteries on the side of a small mountain. You could see deer, hawks, eagles, and we heard turkeys although they did not show themselves.
I can't speak for the Brushy Creek area. I didn't need to go there. But I highly recommend taking a field trip to Smith county if you can. The library is closed on Wednesday. And there is a nice enough hotel at the turn off towards Carthage.

Here are bits and pieces I have re a Nancy Piper:

Smith Co TN Wills 1803-1896: James M Ballow gdn/of Lewis and Nancy Piper (Benjamin Piper former gdrn) Feb 1831 . 51 (heirs of James Piper)

Benjamin Piper gdn/of James piper Feb 1831 p.50.

Early East TN Marriages: Brides: Nancy Piper wed James Johnson 9 March 1833

Smith Co TN Court Minutes: Benjamin Piper appointed guardian of James L and Nancy Piper 1 Mar 1830. Securities were John and James Piper.

This may just muddle up your mind but thot I would pass them on to you. I am researching Pipers from Smith Co from 1800 till around 1830 when my line moved to KY.

Hope this may help in some small way.

Charlotte,
My father grew up between New Middleton and Grant where his family had lived since the early 1800's. We had to go through Brush Creek everytime we went to New Middleton as we were coming from McMinnville, southeast of Smith Co. We went back through there in November and they have straightened out the old road (which we children enjoyed so much when Dad would fly through at a good rate of speed! All the swaying and hitting "dead men", ie. small raises in the road, that our tummies would turn over the way they do on roller coasters) that I hardly recognized Brush Creek. Many people on this list refer to this area as Brushy Creek and that may have been a really old Tennessee familiar term for the area, but in 46 years I have never heard locals from my family call it anything but Brush Creek. Just south of Brush Creek is Alexandria. You turn off the highway between Smithville and Lebanon at Alexandria and take the road through Brush Creek. This leads to New Middleton. If you go east from this point you go to Gordonsville. If you go west and then a little north you are in Grant. Further north you can get to Rome, near the river. East of Rome is Carthage, also along the river. Interstate 40 slices east to west through Smith Co. between New Middleton and Grant. The rest area on the Interstate there is just below my family's old home. You can find a lot of these small places by going to the following and putting in your information:

http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html
USGS Mapping Information: GNIS United States and Territories Data Base Query Form

Just put in the state, county, feature (populated place) and name of what you are looking for. This will bring up a table, but there is a link below that will provide you with a map. You can also enter cemetery names on this URL. Even better maps are available online, some through Digital City and I used our Streets Plus program to give me maps to work off of when we went back last year. So much has changed that they were a big help. Good luck...

Hi Alberta,
I'm sorry I don't have any specific info on a Smith Co. "cemetery" book; however, I'm surprised that the Carthage library doesn't have copies of 2 books that I know have been published.
I found copies of these books on my travels, but can only tell you that 1 volume is entitled something like: Cemeteries North of the Cumberland River, and the 2nd volume is: Cemeteries South of the Cumberland River. I haven't a clue as to the author, but the "south" book was excellent as I recall and listed many of the "family" cemeteries with detailed directions on how to find their location.

thanks for the info you posted on New Middleton Tn. My great-grandparents lived there in the early 1800 Jesse and Caroline Williamson Coleman. Jesse was a farmer and lived in the New Middleton community of Smith County , Tn. I never knew just where New Middleton was. Jesse was listed in the 1840 census of Smith Co. His daughter obituary (Martha Burk) stated that Jesse died in Smith Co. in 1847. His wife Caroline moved to nearby Wilson Co. to be where her relatives lived after Jesse death. I would love to hear from anyone who know's more about this family!!!!!
Thanks!

Alberta,
Its probably because the Smith Co. Hist. and Gen. Soc. themselves already have published these. They did a special reprinting of their North of the Cumberland and South of the Cumberland editions last summer and sold out practically within minutes--or so it seemed to a very disappointed me who didn't order months in advance.
If you write to the society, I think they will do lookups for you. Also you might urge them to reconsider a new printing. Hint, hint. 8-)

Dear Francie,
You are right about the Cemetery books at the Carthage library. The one entitled, "Smith County Tennessee - Cemeteries South of the Cumberland River" was written by F. C. Key, Sue Woodard Maggart, and Jane Coward Turner, Carthage, TN, 1984. Sue Maggart was the one I corresponded with, but I can't find her address. She lives in Carthage. It was only a couple of years ago that I was in Carthage.

Charlotte,
It occurred to me later that you might also want to know what the land looks like, and although it is always difficult to put a picture into words I did remember something. My father's siblings always talked about all the activity around Smith County just before and during the war years. I don't know if this happened everywhere, but there were Army maneuvers and tanks rolling all over the place. Some of the locals were upset that the roads lined with limestone rock fences were run over with little thought to the impact on history or livestock. The sound of guns played havoc with egg production. It was said that Smith County was selected because it so resembled the European Theaters that these men were soon to face. The hills are strewn with limestone rock, a fact which always made me wonder why my ancestors were so fond of the land. But then these people came from Scots Irish stock, so stone farming was nothing of consequence. The hills were high, but not mountains and the terrain broken by limestone fence "hedgerows". My father remembers one prominent hill west of New Middleton and northwest of Brush Creek that the locals called "Tommyhawk" because of the many Indian arrowheads to be found there. Trees, farms and streams were plentiful and the roads were narrow and winding. Some of that still remains. Cattle, sheep and produce have always been plentiful. Good tobacco country, moderate in climate. I don't know if this is what you were looking for, but for what it's worth...

I have a copy of the Smith County Cemeteries, South of the Cumberland River. I purchased it last summer and was told it was the last one and at the time they only had two of the Cemeteries, North of the Cumberland River left. I regret now that I didn't get one for the North. Sorry Charlie, the index listings are only by surnames, no given names, and there are 42 listings for Oldham.

No Charlie, I live in South Carolina, that's why I bought the History book when it was first published in 1987. It's a wonderful book, full of pictures, descriptions of all of the different communities, churches, cemeteries, etc., and 840 compilations of Smith County's Families. I highly recommend it to everyone that has roots in Smith Co.

Dear Elizabeth,
Do you also have my Crawford's on your list? I would be much obliged if you could find Andrew Jackson Crawford around the Gordonsville area, maybe 1880's. Anything you could find about my family would be appreciated. I also have some Stewart people there about that time: Will Joseph Stewart m. Maggie Dillards (1st), Maggie Allman (2nd). Thanks. Is there anything I can do for you here in California (San Luis Obispo Co)?

Sorry...but your Piper is "too late" for "my Piper." My Piper, Nancy, was born about 1812 in Smith County, was put under the guardianship of first Benjamin Piper, then L. Ballew in about 1830. Nancy married Burrel Smith (born in Wilson Co, TN) in Morgan County, IL, in 1832.
There might be a connection farther back, but the names you mentioned are not familiar to me.

The Society's latest Newsletter, Winter 1999, says they have some copies of the History left ($100.00 + $3.00 postage), but no mention of the Cemetery books. They also have a few copies of the Smith County Video ($19.95 + $3.00 postage).

Listmembers,
The Smith County Video that they are talking about is a Birthday Tribute to Tennessee on its Bicentennial Celebration. Quote " By air, by land, by water, by rail, join us on a scenic tour of historic Smith County's communities, historic homes, modern schools, sacred houses of worship, and interesting people. Marvel in the beauty of hills rising in silent majesty above picturesque streams flowing through fertile farmlands." It is a two hour video for $19.95.

I am searching for Joseph J. Taylor born about 1821 married Mary (Polly) A born about 1842. Both were born in Tennessee and both listed their parents in the 1880 census as being born in Virginia. Known children are Cicero born about 1864, Rufus A. born about 1867, George Thomas born about Jan 1870, James W. born about 1871, Joseph P. born about 1875, and Emma E. born about 1878.
In the 1880 census they are listed as having a Darthula Gregory as a Black servant who was 16 in the 1880 census.
Just starting my research. Any help would be greatly appreciated. As yet do not know marriage date for Joseph J. and Mary A. nor the names of their parents.

I am researching the Davises of Smith County Tennessee. My great great grandfather was Rufus B. Davis born 7 Sep 1843 and Baptist preacher in Monoville for many years. His wife's name was Mary J. Taylor she was born about 1847 in Tennessee. Her parents are listed in the 1880 census as father born in Tennessee and mother born in Ireland. I THINK her parents were Thomas C. Taylor who was 29 in the 1850 census and Martha who was 27 in the 1850 census and born in Ireland.
Rufus and Mary's children were Effie L. born about 1868, Alma B. born about 1870, Loyd P. born about 1872, Zora Lowe born Feb 1874 (my great grandmother) and Hermon S. born about 1880, he is listed as 5 months old in the 1880 census.
There is a servant listed with this family in the 1880 census. The name is Aoin B. Morgan (Mu) who was age 22 in the 1880 census.
I am just beginning this line and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Rufus is listed in the 1850 census with his mother Mary. Rufus is 6. There is an Alethia Davis listed age 16. I believe Mary's name was Taylor and she was 38 in 1850. There is a William Cochran listed who was 25 in 1850. Rufus lists his father as William J. Davis but I do not have any other information about him.

Subject: Re: [TNSMITH-L] Brushy Creek or Brush Creek Area

I visited Smith Co. last October. My first visit there was in 1939 when I was five. During the 2nd World War I visited my grandmother and relatives on Hogan's Creek and Bluff Creek. It was and is a beautiful area of rolling hills that once were farm fields. Most of the farm fields have going back to scrub and trees. There is much beauty there. Many farm fields now hold three are four new homes. Few of the homes that I remember as a child, are still standing .. I did revisit Hogan's Creek and Bluff Creek last year. I played in Hogan's Creek as a child, just as my father did before me. I was greatly disappointed when electricity came through in 1946. I enjoyed the oil lamps at night and getting the water from the spring, and there really was a M. Wards catalog in the outhouse!. Back in the 20's my grandmother had a well drilled nearer to the house but all that came up was gas. I heard stories of my cousins tossing matches down the well to see how high an item would shoot up into the air. It was blocked it dirt and stone when I was a kid. Hearing my grandmother calling the pigs and cows, was something I looked forward to. I remember her making lye soap, canning peaches, and blackberry picking, and her blackberry and peach cobblers. I remember how she would feed the chickens, spot one, grab it and then ring its neck. This was our supper. To run the biscuits out that she made every morning, she would use them as the crust for the cobblers. I was a city boy and this was all new to me.. I can still see the cows coming down the hill to be milked. They bellowed to be milked. My grandmother made a quilt for each of her grandchildren. I still have mine and also one that her mother made. We went to town (Carthage) on Saturdays. I believe most farmers and their families did. The town was crowded with farmers and their families, making their purchases and visiting. Someone stopped me on the street in Carthage and asked me who I was. I told him that my father was Ernest Clark and this man then told me that he and I were cousins. It seemed that everyone was related to each other back then. Everyone on the street seemed to greet each other. During the week they were too busy and too darned tired go to town for anything. During the early part of the War the Army comprised of the Red and I believe the Blue armies held maneuvers in and around Carthage.. I remember when they were on Hogan's Creek. The young men were usually well fed by the locals who fed them biscuits and butter milk and fried chicken right on the front porch or lawn. I remember that one young soldier tried to swim the Cumberland near Carthage and he lost his life. The Army set up their water works on Hogan's Creek just below the metal bridge, near Hogan's Creek Church. Right after the war my cousin was playing with a piece of metal he found laying in a farm field. He hammered on it and it exploded .
Thankfully he wasn't injured. This was something left over from that period.
When my grandmother fell ill in the early 1950's she was taken to Lebanon, TN because that was the closest hospital. Now there is one or two in town. When she got out of the hospital and was unable to take care of herself she was placed in Johnson's Rest Home in Lebanon. Again, there were none in Carthage. Now Carthage sports a Hardee's and a Walmart. The town has grown but really not all that much from what it was during the 2nd World war period. I am aware of two cemeteries in town. Ridgewood, the oldest and Memorial Gardens I believe. is the name of the second and newest. They join each other and are located in Carthage.

Linda,
Joseph J. Taylor is my great great grandfather. Here's what I know:
He was born in 1820 in TN and died in 1898, probably in Smith Co, TN. He was married to Mary Adaline Nixon who was born in 1842 in TN. She died in 1881, also probably in Smith Co, TN. I don't know their parents. Joseph's children were: Alice (?), Tom (?), Ellen J. (1858), Sarah A. (1860), Martha Ann (May 10, 1862 - August 14, 1946), Kindred Cicero (1864), Rufus A. (1867), George T. (1869), James W. (1871), Joseph Peyton (1875), Emma E. (1878). My great grandmother was Martha Ann.

Could someone look up in the Smith Co History book for Alman/Allman family? In 1840 Tempa Alman/Allman or sometimes referred to as Temperance was listed as head of household. I would also be interested in purchasing copies of cemetery books.
Thanks Sandy Helligso [email protected]

Apparently I got caught up in the repetition. Last item in the 1860 section should have read: Jane age 50 b. NC.

Some time ago I promised you a complete (as complete as I can read these old signatures) listing of the people who attended my grandmother's wedding in 1909.
I also have the newspaper account of the Mt. Juliet wedding held at "Oakland", the Goodall family home in Wilson Co. TN. The bride is from Mt. Juliet, the groom from New Middleton in Smith Co. TN.
I will forward this on to the Sumner, Smith and Wilson County TN Genweb officials for use as they wish. It is also going to the Sumner and Smith Co. lists to which I subscribe, and another group of Goodall researchers. If you wish to pass it along to any others, in the spirit of full and free genealogy research I encourage you to do so.

I am looking for the Marriage of Yearby Orange and Sophrona in Smith County Tn. about 1811 -1814. Since the courthouse burned down in 1838, I was hoping there might be a church record. Any other information on the Orange family is also welcome. If you are looking for information on the Orange family, I have a simple web page

If you have not checked out TNGENWEB's pages lately, here are a couple of links.
Lots of good stuff has been added here.......like wills, marriages, census, etc for various TN counties
USGenWeb TNGenweb Archives = Digital Library ---searchable by surname
https://sites.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tn/tnfiles.htm

and check out this one too.....

And, no, I am not affiliated with TNGENWEB......just appreciate their efforts in getting information on Tennessee public domain records online for all of us....
And if anyone has original records they want to put online.....there is a place within the TNGENWEB pages to do so.....
