Dear Janette,

I am trying to find the parents & siblings of my g-g-grandmother, Caroline DAVIS, b. 1854 in TN. She married my g-g-grandfather, Calvin J. HASTY in or before 1872 probably in Wilson Co., TN.
They ran a grist mill in Tucker's Crossroads in Wilson Co. near the Smith Co. line.
Their oldest daughter, Mary Jane HASTY married William L. THOMPSON of Smith Co., TN.
Do you know if your DAVIS family is connected?
Thanks,
Jim Moore

Say...I have the Smith County land record microfilm from the TN state  archive...I don't suppose anyone would be interested in transcribing  them and putting them on the web...just a thought...<g>....they are all  typed records...it's the index to land records not the actual deeds themselves...or if someone knows where I could get the microfilm scanned to put on the net...<g>....

I suggest you also post this on the Macontn-L since prior to 1842 one half of Macon County was Smith County. They should be able to help. There are many Pipers still residing in the area.

>>Am searching for the parents of Russell Piper b. 1809 Smith Co. Believe them to be Abraham and Rebecca Covey Piper, no proof. Abraham and Rebecca moved to Smith Co ca 1800 from Orange CO.,NC and on to Hickman/Graves Co.,KY in the early 1830's. There are also an Alexander, James and John Piper in Smith CO.
Are they all related? Any help will be appreciated.

Subject: [TNSMITH-L] DOUGLASS, DeBOW, McMURRY, BRANSFORD, BURNETT, CLARDY

Just curious...Mr. Vernon RODDY wrote several chapters for the 1986 book, "The History of Smith Co TN". It appears that he and I are distant cousins- is anyone here acquainted to Mr. Roddy?

I'm researching and would like to share information on:
John DOUGLASS b. abt 1740, d. 1805 2nd Sheriff of Smith Co TN
Married to Hannah DeBOW, daughter of Solomon DeBOW of Orange Co NC.
Their daughter, Jennet DOUGLASS married Charles McMURRY  in Caswell Co NC.
Charles McMURRY died in 1820 in Smith Co TN.
Their son, Samuel D. McMURRY M.D., married Sarah Ridgeway BRANSFORD, daughter of John and Mary (Ridgeway) BRANSFORD, who came to Smith Co TN about 1808 from Buckingham Co VA.
Samuel D. McMURRY's oldest daughter, Mary Jane McMURRY, born Dec 1819, married about 1839 to James R. BURNETT. James R. BURNETT and Mary Jane moved to Williamson Co IL about 1848, where their daughter, Mary Elizabeth BURNETT, born 1852, married in 1874 Thomas CLARIDA, born 1844. The CLARIDA (spelling variation of CLARDY) family also has roots in Smith Co TN.
Is anyone researching any of these families? I also have information on collateral families, including STALCUP.

Hi Gene,
The Lynch family I'm familiar with was John Linch/Lynch who married Milly Stallings by 1803, in Edgecombe Co., NC. Milly was the sister of my Temperance Stallings Whitley, wife of Exum Whitley. The Stallings sisters were born in Edgecombe Co., NC, and may have moved with their husbands and children to Smith Co., TN about 1812. John & Milly Lynch settled on Hogun's Creek, Smith Co., TN. I've not attempted to trace their descendants, though, so I'm not sure whether this is your family. The only Lynch records I have would have involved a John or William Lynch - none of the other names you mentioned mean anything to me.

Subject: [TNSMITH-L] Wards of Smith (now Trousdale County) Tennessee

This is a family sheet of my Ward Ancestor. It is taken from personal research, Frances Waller notes and the TROUSDALE COUNTY HISTORY BOOK.

John Ward born in 1754 in South Carolina, died Sept 6, 1846 in Phillips County, Arkansas. He married Roxlie Lanie Kornegay born Feb 12, 1766 died March 18, 1812 in Smith (now Trousdale County, TN).
They were married in Dulpin County, NC.
Their children (there were 17) were
1. Bryan Ward born 1786 in Georgia, died 1872 in Trousdale (formerly Smith) county, TN. Married 1st Mary Polly Wynne Sept 23, 1809, 2nd Mary Wynne Tinsley Murphy (niece of his first wife)
2. Henry Ward born 1798
3. Nancy Ward (married Miller Kornegay)
4. Charlotte Ward (married Buck Denney)
5. Matthew Ward (married Martha Barnett)
6. Tabitha Ward (married 1st a Foley, 2nd a Johnson)
7. Tylithia Ward
8. Jack Ward
9. Louis Ward
10. Wiley Ward
11. Luke Ward (born April 12, 1799, died Aug 8, 1811)
12. John Ward (born 1790)
13. Cynthia Ward
14. James Ward (born 1782), went to Arkansas
15. Ellis Ward, went to Arkansas
16. Malinda Ward (married James Nelson, Sept 10, 1836 in Arkansas)
17. Marshall Ward
I am descended from Charlotte Ward and Buck Denny have extensive information on that line. Our cousin Frances Waller is descended from the Bryan Ward line and has extensive information on that line. I am not acquainted with researchers on the other lines. At least the 3 younger continue in Arkansas. The Wards were descended from the Ward family that lived among and traded with the Cherokee Indians in Southeastern TN, Western NC, North GA and Northwest South Carolina.

My opion may not have been asked for, but as a member, and what I'm looking for in a List. It may not count for any one but my self, I can't help but wonder what would hurt to at least list with our ULRs, also the name or names we are researching. For the life of me, just the list of e/mail address doesn't do a thing for me.

Now, I do feel lighter, [less steam],
Thank you,

I am searching for a Mary Jefferys parents, I believe she was born in 1823, or around those years, she was born NC, her father NC, and her mother SC, she later married a John Daniel in Graniger county, Tn in 1842, they later moved to Ark, Benton county, in the 1850's or earlier, I was told that she could be a relative of Osborn or Osborn Jr. Jefferys, or also a Simon Jefferys, Any info would greatly be appreciated, if this is someone's line, I have a lot of info on them from when they lived in Ark and back to Tennessee to where she was married,
thank you

This will be the last list of actual emails belonging to the list... I got more yes keep it than no stop it... I also got suggestions of makeing it a surnames list ..but I don't have time for that ..just keeping the TnGen Site current is a chore and leaves me with little time for personal reasearch. This was the last list you will see. If I have offended anyone it was not my intent. My thoughts were you could see just how many folks are researching in Smith county and give one incentive to even waste time in the research group. Last lets just drop the issue and move forward ! Happy Hunting!!

I have two interests in Smith county at present:

1) My 5GGF Michael FISHER came from Rowan County NC and eventually settled in Bedford County TN. In his first Bedford County Deed (Bedford County Deeds, Book B Page 444, dated 14 Nov 1807) he is referred to as "Michael Fisher of Smith County". By 1811 he is referred to as "Michael Fisher of Bedford County" so I'm interested in any time the spent in Smith County.

2) I am working the early CROSSLINs / CROSSLANDs in Bedford County TN.
These include a John Crosslin (born about 1800) and a William Crosslin who are likely brothers. There is an older John Crosslin whose land shows up in an 1814 deed (TSLA, Bedford County TN Deeds, Book E, Pages 426-427, 9 May 1814, Samuel Hughes to Jonathan Webster and Mary Weatherford, "thence West Passing the South East Corner of a 100 Acre Survey made for John Crossland at thirty two poles with his line crossing a branch ...") and in a 1811 newspaper account (The Democratic Clarion and Tennessee Gazette, published by Thomas G. Bradford, 23 July 1811, Volume III, No CLXXXI; "The following persons have reported estrays in Lincoln County per Brice M. Garner, for Phillip Koonce, ranger: (1) John Crossland, one mile from Fayetteville, took up a bay mare on June 15, 1811, the mare was valued in the amount of $6.") A John and a William CROSSLIN both show up in the very early Smith County TN deeds (e.g. Book B page 133, 5 Oct 1802; Book B, page 152 2 Jan 1803; Book B pages 299-300, 24 Dec 1804; Book B, pages 513-514, 12 Aug 1806; Book C, page 223, 25 Feb 1812; Book C, pages 390-391, 10 Aug 1810; and Book E, pages 52-53, 12 Mar 1814).
So how do the Smith County TN Crosslins relate to those of Bedford County?

Charles,
Sina is short for Louisina, correct? According to my notes, she married John Levi Douglas, and was dead before her father's Will was read in 1811...
Does that sound right?

BTW, do you have a copy of Thomas GREGORY'S Will? I'd love a copy if it's not too much trouble. His daughter Elizabeth and her husband Isaac GEORGE are my 4th-great grandparents. Of course, that makes Thomas my 5th great grandfather.

The following information was gathered from census, marriage and death records in Halifax Co VA, Smith Co, TN and Williamson and Saline Cos IL. Although I'm not a descendant of Drury CLARDY/CLARIDA, I'd be interested in any records pertaining to him, especially connecting him to brothers, sisters and parents.

Drury D. CLARDY b: 6 Mar 1794 married Mary S. Jones in Halifax Co Va on 30 Dec 1818. Surety to the marriage bond was Nathan Jones. Drury moved to Smith Co TN in time to appear on the 1820 Census, where he appeared in 1830 and 1850. In 1840, he may be in the household of Joseph Clardy in Smith Co TN. During that time, Drury bought land in Smith Co TN, so we know he was there. He left Smith Co TN and moved to Williamson Co IL in 1857. He died in Williamson Co IL 8 Jan 1864. His name changes over time from CLARDY to CLARADAY to CLARIDA, which is pronounced several ways: CLAHR-dee, CLAIR-dee, and CLAIR-uh-duh. [My dad always has pronounced his surname, Clarida, as CLAIR-dee (emphasis on first syllable) Joanne]

His tombstone at Pleasant Grove Church Cemetery in Williamson Co IL reads "Drury D. Clarday. Born Halifax Co, Va 6 Mar 1794 Moved to Tenn in 1819 (Long crack, can't read the next line- does anyone know what it said?) _________in 1834 Moved to IL in 1857 Died 8 Jan 1864 Aged 69 y 10 m 2 d"

He had the following children:
James b. 1821
Thomas H. b.1826
John W. b. 1827
Archibald b. 1831
Mary b. 1834
Elijah b. 1838
Ezekial b. 1842
I have more information on his descendants and would love to hear from anyone with CLARDY or CLARIDA in their collateral or direct lines.
Thank you,

I am a member of, THE HISTORICAL/ GENG. SOC. AND, I'v been running around Smith Co., for a few years now, trying to find my father's family, (McCORMICK). Some thing has come up that I never heard of and I need HELP. I will try and quote what was said in an e/mail to me.

A boy, named, PETER was assigned to a 'Squire McCormick' when he came from Virginia as a minor with his widowed Mother. This is recorded in 'BOOK 1 OF THE GUARDIANS, etc. in Smith Co., 1801'

This is all fine, as far as it goes, The only Squire McCormick, a son of JOHN E. and Sarah [Pulley] McCormick, Sr., of that Co., Squire was not born until Oct. of 1834, & married, Peter Craighead's daughter in 1852, Sm. Co.
So, I'm wondering, ???, the book 1 of Guardians and Peter's surname is mispelled.
>From Craighead to Craggot.

Is there anyone that can do a 'look-up' for me? It would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Melba [McCormick]

This is my first posting to the Sumner County mailing list. I've been researching my family surname of Turner for the past 2 & 1/2 years. My Turner lineage all leads to Macon or Smith Co. TN. I'm interested in correspondence with any cousins or anyone working on the Turner lineage. The families were much larger about a 100 years ago than what they are now. I'm posting this inquiry in hopes of reaching some of those elusive cousins. I'm certain that there are many relatives out there that I might not be able to reach any other way.

Hello,
Just discovered that Smith County had finally logged on to RootsWeb. Re: Isaac Lynch m. Millie..had issue Susan and Iron. Susan married Harrison Lee Douglas first. He went on to marry two more times. His last marriage was to Susan Evelyn Fisher Clark, who was my grandmother. I believe Susan Lynch Douglas is buried with Harrison Lee Douglas near Popes Hill, Smith Co., TN.

There is another family of Lynches that migrated to Crittenden Co., KY along with many other families, Clarks, Paris's, Hunts, Congers, to name just a few. I have some iinformation on these families. Let me know what you need.
