The 1840 census said Miles was born at NC.
I would appreciate anything.

OK. Here's mine.
One of my ancestors was a Cherokee woman named Mary E. Madole, McDowl, McDowell (spellings differ), born ca. 1768 in SC, according to compensation claims filed by her grandchildren. Her mother was Cherokee but her father was probably an Indian trader named McDowell. Does anyone have any information about such a person at that time in Cherokee country?
She married a man named John Ward, but not, apparently, the one who was the son of Bryan Ward. They apparently lived among the Cherokees, spoke the language, etc., and ended up in TN and KY.
Anybody know anything about him? I'd appreciate any tips as to how even to research this.
Thanks.
Linda

I'm looking for William Coats and I believe there might be two William Coats' in that area...the William Coats I'm looking for was married to Nancy Baker...there is land for a William Coats on both creeks...the William on Brushy Creek got there about 1806...

Any history of the area would be great...did any settlers from SC come to that area...I have an early MO History that says William Coats went from SC to Smith County TN...

Thanking you all in advance...goin' find those documents this year!!!!

Can anyone tell me where the following are in Smith co.?
These is from plat surveys circa 1820s-1840s.
District 23
Love's Valley
Wolfe Creek

I believe the latter to be different from the Wolfe Creek area now in Dekalb Co. In fact, I suspect all of this is located north of the Cumberland and East of the Caney Fork somewhere near [here's where I need lots of help] Jackson Co.

Hi Nancy and all Y'all Smith County Cuzzins . . .
I'm desperately looking for connections to my Brassell Ancestors. My gggrandfather was Egbert H. Brassell and the Dixon Springs, Smith County, TN enumeration on 1st Day of June 1860 shows:

Egbert Brassell 44 M W Carpenter No. Carolina
Mary P. Brassell 31 F W Housewife Tennessee
Tennessee Brassell 12 F W Tennessee
William Brassell 16 M W Farmer Tennessee
Reuben J. Brassell 15 M W Tennessee
Zachariah T. Brassell 9 M W Kentucky
Luiza Brassell 7 F W Kentucky
Joseph Brassell 7 M W Kentucky
George A. Brassell 5 M W Kentucky
Amanda Brassell 3 F W Tennessee

The family later moved to Putnam County and the last son, Samuel Brassell, was obviously born there.

The above listed Reuben J. Brassell (s/b James Reuben Brassell) was my great grandfather and he married Harriette Zeniera Dowell (father Reuben Hickman Dowell/mother Attaline Cooke, daughter of Richard Fielding Cooke) of Jackson/White County.
I have much info on the Cooke line but am just beginning to dig up Dowell info and haven't been able to connect Egbert H. Brassell beyond the Smith County census.
The family has a really sad history which I know many folks in that area are aware of and perhaps someone can help me track down records.

Thanks so much for any and all info you might have.
Patty Larson

If you want Smith surnames, mine are mixed with Wilson Co. names since our family settled between Brush Creek, New Middleton and Grant on the south and west side of Smith Co.
I am (slowly) working on a website, and congratulate those of you who already have one. Please post them with the surname list! Great idea!
My family came from NC to Smith Co. somewhere between 1800 and 1807. I believe my GGGGrandfather originally obtained land there by a NC Rev. War Grant, but so far have been unable to prove that fact. The Moore family home (not Patrick Moore) and cemetery are about one mile west of New Middleton.

My ancestors from Smith Co. dribble into Wilson Co. I think, but my JAMES DOBBS' birthplace is listed in his war record as Smith Co. I am trying to make the connection back to NC, which is where I suspect they came from. Here they are:
James DOBBS b. 1789 Smith Co. TN d. 1872 Bradley Co. TN m.
Sarah WHITLOCK b. 1805 prob. Surry Co. NC d. bef. 1858 Bradley Co. TN

James' father is George DOBBS d. 1818 Smith Co. TN

I'm also interested in reasons for migrations. My Josiah BAIRD family, along with his brother-in-law James UPTON's family, came about 1803 to Smith Co., TN from Rowan Co., NC. Other Rowan Co. families that came and seem to be related are ELS(T)ON, (BEL)CONGER, but I'm not sure if they came at the same time or not.

I am researching these Smith Co. names:
1) BAIRD/BEARD, PAR(R)IS, PENDLETON
and
2) BRASWELL, STEVENS.

These lines intermarried or had tangled dealings with:
1) HUGHES, GWALTNEY, AGEE, PROWELL, WARD, SMARTT, DOWELL, ALLISON/ELLISON, GASS, BASS, PIGG, FRANCIS, ELS(T)ON, CONGER, McCORMACK, CAMPBELL, COCKERHAM/COCHRAN/COCKRUM, BLACKBURN, BRASWELL to name a few.

2)STARNES, NEAL, LOVE?, BAIRD, BETTY

I welcome any requests/comments. My webpage (I have lots of info. not on it!) is under construction and can be reached at:

My great-great grandfather was Neil William Patterson of Smith County. He married Mahulda Greannad (and three other women) and I'm descended through their daughter, Mahulda Patterson, who married Atwood Willoughby of Allen County, Ky. My grandmother, Aramitta Willoughby, married Sidney Phillip Hardcastle of Warren County, KY.

Any information is welcome!

Harold i don't publish a list ? unless you mean the subscriber list? And that is only within our group And might i add that the message you just sent to the group had your email on it .....i will put this to a group vote.

So group should i list subscribers so you can know the number of folks who belong to the list..... It was my way of showing the growth i will stop if you as a group wish that i do so. Sorry if you feel i caused this problem Harold but i bet if you do much research your gonna get a little junk mail.

I for one like having the list put out so that I know who everyone is.  If you surf the web just about any sight sends you a cookie and they figure out who you are and send you their adv/junk mail/spam. As far as I know there is not a whole lot that can be done about it. I believe you can report spam mail on the rootsweb webpage if you feel that the spam came from someone inside the group.

Hi Charles,
I vote to keep letting us periodically know our fellow researchers and how many are subscribed. I've been on the Internet for almost 3 years - long before we had a Smith Co. list; have been getting unsolicited mail the whole time, and Smith plus one other list are the only ones who've posted names. From the looks of my spam mail, it's never anything having to do with genealogy - so I don't know how they get my address, but I'd never blame this list. I just immediately hit the reply - delete the return address to the point of the "@" and type in abuse to send off a complaint, then delete the message & go about my business. I can't control the junk mail I receive from the US P.O. either <G>

Hi Folks - Tom Willis in Colorado.
When I began my wife's line some months ago I started in Sumner Co. because when she told me her grandmother's name was Cage - I flashed to Cage's bend I drove by everyday on my commute from Portland to Hendersonville when we use to live there back in the 80's. (1980's :-)) - anyway, I've just began transcribing a lawsuit from the Sumner CO archives and it Places Poleman CAGE in Smith Co.

Is anyone on the list doing any CAGE - GRIGG(S) research - In particular Henry Cage b. 1855 and Mary Grigg(s) b. 1849 ???
Thanx for the list and the help.

Hello to the List.....
Had a question from someone about "roll call".....we forget to explain what's going on sometimes for the new folks....
Basically, Roll Call is just telling who you are (and where you are from, if you want to add that in).....and a list of surnames you are researching in this county, so the rest of us can contact you if we see a connection....
And some people have suggested that you add in where your ancestors went to from Tennessee, as many times a connection can be made there...
Don't forget......the past issues of the TNSMITH mailing list digest archives can be found online at:
http://members.aol.com/genny1/smithidx.html

And thanks ever so much to Charles Gregory, ListOwner

If you can find the names of the Churches, you can write to the Southern headquarters of the Baptist Church Association where they keep these records, but I don't know exact address, name, etc. Can someone help me out here?

The following webpage has information and links to some specific repository sites for Church Records:

For CATES, you should turn your eyes to Bedford Co. and Warren Co. areas. I haven't traced these lines; however, I know that the CATES intermarried with my HASTINGS/HOLLOWAY lines, which in turn intermarried with my POLLOCK line. These people (CATES, HASTINGS, HOLLOWAY) came from Orange Co., NC before 1816. Below is my tie-in to the HASTINGS line:

Samuel Pollock was born between 1791 and 1800 at now TN. He married Susanna Hastings, daughter of Joseph Hastings (RS) and Susannah Holloway, before 1816 at TN. He died circa 1834 at Benton Co., AL.

Susanna Hastings was born circa 1794 at Orange Co., NC. She married Samuel Pollock, son of John Pollock and Alcy ?, before 1816 at TN. She died after 1850.

Joseph Hastings (RS) was born on 25 Nov 1757 at Orange Co., NC. He married Susannah Holloway, daughter of Robert Holloway and Martha Ballard, in 1778 at NC. He died on 30 Jan 1816 at Bedford Co., TN, at age 58.

Susannah Holloway was born in 1755 at Orange Co., NC. She married Joseph Hastings (RS), son of Henry Hastings (RS) and Elizabeth ?, in 1778 at NC. She died on 27 Aug 1842 at Bedford Co., TN.
