In 1833 it would have been south of the cumberland with its west border near rome and its eastern border about half way to carthage...the two southern points would be an approximate square to the above...i will scan this file and put it on the Smith County site this week!

Mary,
The only thing they have listed in their Quarterly Newsletter is the History book, the video and the History of the Carthage United Methodist church.

Subject: [TNSMITH-L] Reece & Rease
I have an interest in the REECE line for several reasons:

1) William SEARCY had a marriage bond with Barbara D. REASE in 1813 Wake Co NC.

2) The same William SEARCY was said to have married a much younger REECE & was living in Smith Co TN with wife, Mary Ann and children in 1850.

3) My gg grandparents were living with this family shortly after their marriage in 1849. Wesley SEARCY married Barbara THOMAS and they were living with the James REECE family in 1850 Smith Co TN:

Smith Co TN p. 258 Household # 650

REECE, James 36 NC farmer Married within the year
Elizabeth 30 TN

SEARCY, Wesley 22 TN farmer Married within the year
Barbara 20 TN

REECE, Bransford P. 4 TN
THOMAS, Emeline 22 TN
Martha 18 TN

Can anyone enlighten me on any of these REECE families?
Thanks,
Carmelita

Subject: [TNSMITH-L] Samuel Crockett descendants sought/newspaper article

The following article was recently in the Springfield, TN newspaper....(thanks to Jeffery Johnson, Robertson County TN mailing list owner for the alert):

>From Robertson County Times (Springfield, TN) Feb 24, 1999:
CROCKETT RELATIVES SOUGHT
--- "Special to the Times" (name of author not given) ---
"Samuel Crockett was born on Dec 04, 1759 in Cumberland County, PA. Samuel served in the Revolutionary War in the Cumberland County, PA Militia. He married Sarah Wilson on Sept 25, 1787 in that same county and apparently very quickly began their move towards Robertson County, TN. Their family Bible lists their first child Wilson Crockett as being born in Kentucky in July 1788.
Upon arriving in Robertson County (TN) in 1788, Samuel Crockett built a fort, which served as a safe haven for his own and other early settlers of this county...
...Samuel and Sarah, along with some of their eleven children are buried at Mt. Sharon (Cumberland Presbyterian Church). Time and weather has damaged and broken Samuel's tombstone."
"The Mt. Sharon Church Cemetery Association has been making needed repairs to tombstones however, ... Samuel's can't be fixed."
Descendants are requested to make donations for a replacement tombstone for Samuel Crockett and checks should be made payable to Mt. Sharon Cemetery Fund and mailed to:

---------
I thought some of the other desdendants would like to know.....I had been told Samuel was buried in the "Crockett Cemetery" in Robertson County, so I was pleased to see the article.....there's a little more in the article about the church. At the organization of the Mt. Sharon Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1824, Samuel Crockett was named an elder....
From one Samuel Crockett descendant to the others....

Subject: [TNSMITH-L] Are There Plat Maps ?

I have some very poor copies of Smith Co, Tenn deeds, that I am hoping to get new copies of soon.
These deeds are from April-Aug 1830, and appear to be the dividing of land, after the parents deaths.
Names I can pick out, are: John F VANCE, James M Vance, John M Vance, Samuel Vance, Matilda F Vance, Ramsey Vance, John L and Almira A COWAN, William H and Letsey B OVERSTREET, Jacob J and Anna ROBERTS.
I also see Benjamin I VADEN, Samuel ROBINSON, William PETTY, and DILLARDS. (neighbors?)
The land is along Snow Creek and the Cumberland River. I need to know, how I can try to track this family back, through land records, to see who the parent was, and who previous owners of the land were.
It would be a "big help", if I could find out how to get copies of Plat Maps, so I could see when this land was first owned by a Vance, and what his name is.
It would also show me who their neighbors were, how close it was to the PENDARVIS family on Turkey Creek, and if their were any TANKSLEY or RAMSEY family's near them.
I would very much appreciate, any suggestions on how to try to get "anything", that will help me find this information. I do not know, what records are available, for Smith Co, for this period of time, or where to write for them.
Thanks,
Sherry Morell Shelts

Subject: Re: [TNSMITH-L] Are There Plat Maps ?
Well...I have not gotten into the TN land records in depth yet...but this is what I found in SC ...the FHCs have the SC land records on microfilm and you can order them through them if they are not at your local FHC...they also have land records for TN...

TN though I think might be a little different when it comes to land...I'm not sure they had the colonial land system there...a lot of the land was Bounty Land or Military Warrants...and lots of military grants were given for service in one state but the land was taken in another state such as TN...

But those land grants should all be on micro film either at the FHC or the TN State Archive...TSA has a web site btw, and they list the county land records they have on microfilm that you can purchase from them, I think it's 20.00 dollars a roll for the microfilm from them...they also have an index...they sent me a list of the Coats surname ...they're on card indexes or something...and I would be careful of the list of microfilm on their web site, I'd check with them to make sure there isn't more...I ordered the microfilm for Smith County #190 I believe, which at the time was the only one they had listed...it was a later time period than what I was looking for...now I see they have a microfilm #190a, which is the one I need....so be careful and make sure what they have listed is all they have...they do reference questions via email also...that is really nice...you get a quicker response...

Wills will also devise land and they were often used as ways to pass title to children etc...so you might check the wills for the periods your researching...also the deeds, later deeds will sometimes give you the chain of title with a reference to an original grant from the state or military warrant...

In SC I found, a second piece of land for a Coats referenced in a later sale for the property....the deed from the Coats to the second seller was not found...but with the second seller and the reference to the fact that the Coats had gotten the land from a Francis Wafer, I could then look at the plat maps and found the land...

Also we found in a plat a Coats as an adjoining land owner to a Hunt...we can not locate the deed or the plat for this piece of property but we sure know the Coats was there because of this deed that shows him as an adjoining land owner....

Now this is the tricky part...most of the old indexes are not complete...the deed I refer to about the second seller was found because I just sat and read the deeds on about 6 rolls of microfilm and yes, I was just about cross eyed when I got done...but by reading all the deeds I found information that was not in the indexes and some deeds in the Coats part of the index were not Coats but had been listed as Coats...

So, if you have the time, the eyes, you like to read....the land records are by far the best records....

Subject: [TNSMITH-L] GREAT genealogy research tips by Sandy Gorin of KY
For those who have not visited Sandy Gorin's "KY RESEARCH TIPS" web pages...
you are in for a treat...
Many of us have some KY connections....but, you do NOT have to have KY ancestors to benefit from Sandy's many valuable research tips....
See the following topics for some good examples of what is available through Sandy's web pages on GenForum at Rootsweb...

Kentucky Research Tips Message Index _ this is the main index page
http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/Tips
Check it out if you suspect your TN ancestor either came from or went to KY...
for example, Sandy has listed Revolutionary War Soldiers for each county in KY...
==
TIP 230 - THE DRAPER MANUSCRIPTS http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/Tips?read=249
The Draper Manuscripts are a vauluable untapped resource many people are not aware of...plus Sandy's page gives information on some "Calendars" pertaining to portions of Lyman Draper's work which are now available in print...
==
TIP 184 MILITARY RECORDS - WHAT DO THEY CONTAIN AND HOW TO ORDER http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/Tips?read=203
I often see questions of how to get copies of military records...Sandy's page will give you the information you need....
==
TIP #144 - LAW OF DESCENTS
http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/Tips?read=162
"This deals with the estates of deceased and how they were to descend by law.."
Even though this article is specific to KY laws as taken from their home state of Virginia, it explains a lot on how property was distributed by law when someone died without a will..
=
TIP# 138 - SOUTHERN CLAIMS COMMISSION & COMMISSION RELATIVE TO CAPTURED & ABANDONED PROPERTY
http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/Tips?read=156
This is another uptapped resource many folks are not aware of....particularly helpful to those who had ancestors who fought for the Union in the Civil War...
==
TIP#55 - THE FAMOUS WALKER LINE http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/Tips?read=58
Many people are not aware of "Walker's Line" between KY and TN...and the disputes that occurred over land boundaries during this period...
If your ancestor lived near the borders of TN....be sure to check out the neighboring county of the neighboring state in the early formation days...
==
TIP 224 - MIGRATORY PATTERNS
http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/Tips?read=243
quoted from this page: -
"With the 1850 census, Kentucky decided to track places of birth on its citizens. Most of the settlers came from neighboring states with Virginia giving up the largest amount of its people followed by Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. This changed so that by 1870, most of Kentucky’s new arrivals came from Tennessee and 100 years later, from Ohio. There were also large numbers from Indiana, Illinois and West Virginia whereas North Carolina and Pennsylvania dropped sharply."

Hope this helps some of you.....

Subject: RE: [TNSMITH-L] FW: Dickens Surname and Massey
You know I was having probems with his name until I got the following from this very nice lady Regina I also had Allen Massey as m to Amanda Overstreet. This family had me pulling my hair out for a while! Elbert and Allen are the same man. In different documents he is variously known as Elbert J or Allen G. Both names show up as born on the same day/month/year. Elbert and Allen lived at the same farm during various census counts. There was only one death cert for Elbert in 1911. To really get to the heart of the matter, I took a field trip to Smith county, Tn. My great-uncle Edgar Harville is the son of Fannie Massey. He is still alive and sharp of mind. Edgar told me that grandpa Massey hated the name Elbert. Elbert's father had insisted on that name, but Elbert's mother called him 'Allen'. I would still be interested in Overstreet information.Linda

Hello List,
I just joined the Smith Co list this evening trying to find someone who might have a school photo from the Brush Creek school circa 1934 - 1938. If so, I'd like to arrange to get a copy ( paper or file ) if possible. I'm wanting this to include in a family history book covering the Blackburn's and Hickey's who settled in the area.
Also, I'd like to hear from any one else searching Blackburn & Hickey in the area. My connections are through
Kenneth Blackburn (1928 - )
Marvin Nathan Blackburn (1906 - 1936)
Shelah Blackburn
William T Blackburn

Iva Lear Hickey (1910 - 1995)
Elijah T Hickey

Anybody else searching these lines???

Hi All,
I have a William Shoemake in my file who married Susan Elizabeth Violett in Smith Co., Tn on Oct. 4, 1872. She was born Aug. 24, 1844. I would bet William is the son of James Shoemake.. William was a school teacher. I have a map of the United States with a copyright of 1848 that belonged to him as well as a pilot's book of the Mississippi that also belonged to him. He didn't father any children by Susan who went on to marry three more times (all in Smith Co.) She had no children by any of her husbands. This Susan was my father's favorite aunt. At one time my father had a letter that was addressed to Enoch Fisher, (my ggrandfather) from Wm. Shoemake asking about any teaching jobs that might be available in Smith Co.

Regina,
I have some info on this family. This isn't my direct line but is a line that does go back to my ggrandfather James Mattison Cox and his 3rd wife Mary (Downs) Lambert. She had a daughter, Almedia Lambert, by her 1st husband, and Almedia was the 1st wife of my grandfather, Nathan Burdine Cox, son of my ggrandfather and his 2nd wife Mary Mink. I have quite a bit of Cox info if anyone is interested.

Respey CHAPMAN, Elizabeth CHAPMAN, and Achaza CHAPMAN. I am hoping that they may be sisters to this CHAPMAN born about 1790-1794 in TN, married a Mary UKN born abt. 1793 in VA. They left Wilson County about 1838/39 and moved to Dallas County, MO. They had 8 children, that I am aware of.
1) Elizabeth CHAPMAN md James CHEEK in Smith Co., TN,
2) Elias CHAPMAN md Mary A. UKN in Dallas Co., MO,
3) Nancy P. CHAPMAN md Francis S. WINGO in Dallas Co., MO,
4) William CHAPMAN md Mahala UKN in Dallas Co., MO,

7) Isaac J. CHAPMAN md Sarah Emeline MORROW in Dallas Co., MO and Edward Burton "Burt" CHAPMAN md Delilah Jane WHITE Hembree in Dallas Co., MO. All children were born in TN, except Edward. They were known to be in Dekalb Co., Smith Co., and Wilson Co.
Hope someone can help me out. Like one of you said, with 1000 William CHAPMANS out there, it's mind boggling.
Appreciate any help I can get.

I have many family members from TN. The generation prior to the one I need to search, at this time, was from Sullivan Co. and it is believed that they were born in Nashville. So, I don't know what county to search? Please help, and if you're exceptionally kind you might be able to help me anyway. I am looking for
SPURGEON, Frances Elizabeth b. 1817, TN. Must find her father and mother and her Grandfather and Mother as I have to prove my relationship to SPURGEON, Charles Haddon b. 1834 back in England, so thought if I went back 2 generations it would be easier to cross over, if you get my gist.
SPURGEON, Frances Elizabeth married HILTON, James Andrew b.TN 23/03/1813. His folks were HILTON, Charles b.TN abt 1775, d. abt. 1839. His wife was YOAKLEY, Margaret. B TN 1779.

Sorry, your William Andrew wasn't a member of this family. Sure wish I could find the father though, he isn't listed with the family on any census.

I have watched with enthusiasm as Mary Hughes, Jim Clark and Regina Hope have discussed their Shoemake relations. I too have Shoemake ancestors only I believe my Shoemake connections predate my family's move into the Smith and Wilson County area. By family tradition, I have Anna Shoemake, date and place of birth unknown. She was married to Samuel Bridgewater, date and place unknown. They had at least one child, Chesley Bridgwater born March 26, 1781 in Buckinham VA. Anna was my fourth great grandmother. If we have any connections, please let me know.

Subject: [TNSMITH-L] Re: clark connections

Hi Jim,
Thank you for getting back to me. I have just had cataract surgery and am just getting back to genealogy also. Hope all is well.

Question in point, my Thomas Anderson Clark b 1810/1811 in Halifax Co., VA migrated into middle TN with his family. He was about eight or nine at the time. His father was named Leonard . In my direct family his father was known as Frank not Leonard. . Family history in my family named brothers and I was able to locate descendants of a few of these brothers in Crittenden Co., KY and in Osage County, MO. The descendants of the Crittenden Co., KY brothers said that Thomas Anderson Clark's father was Leonard and one descendent said that Leonard's father was Joseph.

The Osage Co., MO Clark was named John Lawson Clark. He had a large family and named his children for family members, namely Leonard, and Alfred P. My family record has Alfred P. as one of Thomas Anderson Clark's brothers. So I guess what I am trying to get across is that I feel confident with the information I have at present.

Leonard Clark was found in the Smith Co., Tn. Census of 1820, where I would expect him to be if he migrated into the area in 1818 or 1819 as was passed down to me.

I found a family of Clarks that came out of Halifax Co., Va that had Joseph as its head. Joseph migrated to Claiborne Co., Tn where he lived out his life.
One of his sons migrated to Smith /Jackson Counties. Some of this family married into an Anderson Family. I sort of feel that this is Thomas Anderson Clark's family.

Now to your Thomas Anderson Clark. He is a son of James J. Clark and his second wife Dorothea Woodson. James J. Clark is the son of Francis Clark of Boyle Co., KY. Neither of James J. Clark's wives were named Anderson and yet two of his children carry Anderson as their middle names, Susannah Anderson Clark from his first marriage and Thomas Anderson Clark from his second marriage. Possibly James J. Clark's mother who was named Dorcus was an Anderson.

>From this both Thomas Anderson Clarks were born in 1810/1811. Anderson is common in both families. I don't think they are one in the same but are closely related. do you have more information regarding Francis Clark and children including James J. Clark? I Use FTW and can send you a file on what I have.

Best Regards,
James V. Clark

Regina and list,
I'm also involved in the Massey name. Allen Masseys name was given as Elbert Massey on his death cert. Fannie Massey married James Turner Harville. After speaking at some length one day with the county librarian, I found that it was the custom for people to be commonly known as their middle name. The first name sometimes only used for legal documents. And I found that the librarian actually personally knew about James Harville, only everyone in town called him Turner.

If any of you all want documentation, send me your snail mail and I'll send you a copy.

I am looking for a Clyde L. Sandersons who lives in Albquerque, N.M. When I was doing research on the Sandersons in Moulton, Alb. I found in the Sanderson file two letters from Clyde looking for people who were connected to this line of Sandersons, and we are connected. I wrote Clyde, but the letter came back.
I called information, but they don't have any listings for Clyde either, so if you are reading this, or anyone knows of his whereabouts just e-mail me. We are of the same line.
Thank-you,

I am looking for a list of children of Elias & Esther JOHNS who were in Smith County 1820-1850. Does anyone have a probate or will book of Smith Co. & could see if there is a will or probate on file for Elias JOHNS. If there is someone who would go to the courthouse & check for a sale of land of Elias I would pay the search. Thanks.
