I used the index. I didn't have time to go over it closely. The public library has it, but doesn't check out books from its genealogy section. I need to go back to it because I am also related to the Armstrongs in the book.
I can't connect my William H Phillips to any of the earliest Phillips in Davidson County. In another book "Pioneers of Davidson County", the following names are mentioned: Samuel Phillips, Joseph Phillips, Wm Phillips, Michael Philips, John Phillips (2 times) and Benjamin Phillips. Most of the names were mentioned as part of the Militia companies in the area at the time. Then we come to Philip Phillips. From what I have found of him, he appears to be the big time real estate agent in Davidson County. He appears many times in another book I read concerning land deeds in Davidson County. If the weather is bad on my next day off, I will be going back to the library to go over Tennessee Cousins again.
Did you know there is also a companion book, "Carolina Cousins"?

Dale,
Following is a copy of info I found years ago. (Where, can't remember), but I felt that my line was with the Phillips line in Cecil County Maryland. This John Phillips may be your's, I think my GGGgrandfather was William.
In any case maybe someone out there might get a new line to follow and at the very least more files to check on and some interesting reading on the Phillips family.
Happy Hunting,
Anne

The Phillips Family of Old Buncombe
One of the Phillips/Philips families of Buncombe County originated in Cecil County, Maryland.
Reuben Phillips and his wife Catherine moved from Cecil County to Frederick County Maryland in 1753 and then in 1769 sold their Frederick County lands and moved to Rowan County, North Carolina.
Reuben and Catherine's children included: John, William, Levi, Reuben, Jr., Jesse, Jonas and Adam.
During the Revolution, John, William, Levi and Adam served in the militia, while Reuben was Road Overseer, and Jesse was Constable. Adam moved in 1789 to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and then in 1803 to Buncombe County where he rented a farm on Turkey Creek for about a year.
In the fall of 1803, Adam purchased some unimproved land on the Beaver Dams of Hominey Creek, and moved into it on the tenth of March 1804. He lived here with his wife Hannah (Bailey) Phillips and children, Eli A., Elizabeth, Elisha, Reuben, Mary Ann, Catherine and Hiram. Adam was of the Methodist faith, and in 1806 Daniel Asbury who was the Presiding Elder of a nearby district, visited the Phillips home, and he sent a Methodist preacher named Jesse Richardson, who preached round the neighborhood, and often stayed in the Phillips house. Adam was appointed Class Leader for the Methodist Society in Buncombe County, and kept that position for over 40 years. Adam had taught school while living in Mecklenburg County, and in 1810 his son Reuben, though only a youth of 14, was given a job as schoolteacher on the Swannanoa river near Adam's new home on Whitson Creek, (now Haw Creek). Adam and his family had moved to Whitson Creek in 1809 to get nearer civilization because the neighborhood around Hominey Creek was full of rowdies and had "No church, no school and no Sabbath" as Reuben states in his autobiography.
Adam's son Eli was married in 1809 and lived near Adam and his new wife Sarah. In the following years, other of Adam and Hannah's children were married: Elisha in 1810; Elizabeth in 1814; Reuben in 1819; and the other children as they became old enough.
In 1825, Eli and Reuben made an exploratory trip to the newly opened Creek Indian lands in Habersham County, Georgia, and in the spring of 1826 they moved there with their families. Their sister Mary Ann who had married Joseph Wilson Pharr, a Methodist minister, followed shortly. In 1832, their youngest brother Hiram who married Nancy Vaughn of Clarksville joined them and moved to that town where be became a doctor of medicine.
Elizabeth was now Elizabeth Wells, Catherine had married James Bell and had a son George Hamilton Bell who was a prominent episcopal minister in Buncombe County. Adam's son Elisha now lived in Haywood County, and raised a large family in that county, outliving three wives in the process. Elisha's son Sewell became one of the more prominent ministers of Tennessee before his death in 1896. Many of Adam's sons, grandsons, and great grandsons became Methodist preachers, teachers, or often both, and his daughter Catherine Bell was a well-known teacher in Asheville for many years.
Hannah died in 1848, and Adam lived with his daughters Elizabeth and Catherine. He was given a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War, and also a Bounty Land Warrant. He died December 29, 1858 aged 96 years and two days, and is buried in Bethesda Cemetery on Haw Creek Asheville, on the land he owned for many years.
Many of his descendants still live in Buncombe, Haywood and other Western North Carolina counties, and many have been prominent citizens in their own right.
It is likely that Adam's brothers John and William also lived for a time in Buncombe County before they moved on the Tennessee and Kentucky.  Adam's Father Reuben and brother Levi took their families to Oglethrope County, Georgia about 1786 and in 1793 Jesse and Reuben Jr. left Rowan County also. Jesse evidently went to Tennessee, while Reuben Jr. settled in Wilkes County, North Carolina where he died in 1813 or 1814

Subject: Samuel Monroe Phillips
Does anyone have any info on PHILLIPS in Tennessee? Looking for my grandfather, Samuel Monroe PHILLIPS.
His parents: Edward and Victoria (Tulser) PHILLIPS. Samuel was born in April 1892-1895, possibly in Rutherford County, TN.
He enlisted in the army in 1913. At that time he gave his residence as Readyville, TN. He served during WWI in Washington State. He married Virginia Kesinger in 1919 in Spokane, WA. He died in 1935 in Spokane, WA.
May have had a brother, Harry PHILLIPS.
There may be a relationship with Lee PHILLIPS found in the 1900 Rutherford Co., TN census. In the same household there was Vick (sister) born 1870 and a nephew (Sampson) born April 1896.
I've been searching for 20 yrs. for this family. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Susan Phillips Morris

Subject: WILLIAM PHILLIPS BORN 1773 IN WALES, STAYED WITH RELATIVE
I need some help I have that William Phillips came to America in 1795 accompanied by his brother, Philip and an elderly male cousin. They moved to Davidson County, Tennessee where they lived for a time with another relative.
Not long after settling in Davidson County, TN, he married a Nancy Henderson.
Now my problem, how can I go about finding who they stayed with? Where would be port of call where they got off the ship? I find after they were married they lived in Nashville close to the "Hermitage" and was friends with Andrew Jackson. On his gravestone it says that he was with the Mounted W. Tennessee Volunteers. It also says he was with the Wales, 1st Regiment. I know he marched with Andrew Jackson from Pensacola to New Orleans. Could I find something about him there? I am a pretty new newbie, but I am learning fast. He is buried in Arkansas. Please email me privately as I sometimes do not get all my lists read. Any help anybody can give me would be greatly appreciated'.

Denise,
Great info!! Loved seeing my Abner right there at the beginning of the census list! (Abner by the way was born Sept. 15, 1737, d. Nov. 18, 1813 and is buried in the Greenwood family graveyard in Elkin NC, having been moved there we think when Sarah Phillips Woodruff Bagby's grave was also moved there when her son Abner Bagby's church - Union Methodist - disbanded in Surry/Yadkin Co. and all the graves were moved from it) It gave me confirmation of number of children, boys and girls - I never knew of but one girl my Sarah "Sally" for sure and there seems to be a Prudence who married Gideon Woodruff the brother of Moses Woodruff Jr. who married my Sarah "Sally" both girls are listed as being born ca. 1770. George Phillips is Abner's son - must have been the oldest or close to it - I have never known the birth order. He had 6 sons so one other must have also been old enough to be off on his own by 1784-87.
His sons (if you didn't see my earlier post on the Phillips list) were Phillip, Richard, Micajah, Cornelius, George, and Ephriam. Since I posted my Phillips info I have since learned that Phillip Phillips, one of Abner's sons was married to Sussanah Spencer on 2 Feb 1809 with Abner Phillips as bondsman.   There seems to have been other Phillips around that were contemporaries of Abner in Surry Co. at that time - I am surprised that they did not show up in the census. There was definitely a John Phillips in the area.
I have the following Surry Co. Marriage Bond information:
Ezekiel Philips m. Betsey Brown 20 Dec 1808 bondsman Wm. Hudson
Merrel Philips m. Eliza Stubblefield of Stokes Co. 16 Jan 1797 bm. John Purdom
Solomon Phillips m. ? 11 May 1785 bm. Andrew Phillips
Abraham Phillips m. Sarah Rideans (Ridings) 18 Feb. 1799 bm. John Phillips
Orwell Philips m. Elizabeth Bolling 23 Nov 1816 bm. James Flynn
Richard P. Woodruff m. Nancy Phillips 19 May 1831, bm. William Woodruff (this may be one of the 3 children born to my Sarah Phillips who first married Moses Woodruff Jr. who died in 1803 - I have been unable to find out what happened to those 3 children from her first marriage or what their names were - however in the same graveyard that Sarah and her father Abner were moved to there is a R.P.Woodruff b. Mar 9, 1804, d. Sept. 1, 1870 and wife Nancy b. Oct 12, 1812, d. June 12, 1899. Sarah may well have been pregnant when Moses died so this was probably child #3 of that marriage)
Nancy Phillips m. Thomas Cummins 22 Feb. 1792, bm. Edmund Adams
William Hudson m. Polley Phillips 25 July 1807, bm. John Chapman
Sarah Phillips m. Bartlett Creed 8 Jan 1787, bm. Joseph Phillips (this is not my Sarah but another apparently)
John Phillips m. Rachel Hopson 20 Aug 1831, bm. Thomas Flinn
Abner Phillips m. Nancy Cockerham 8 Jan 1866, bm. H. Cockerham
Ezekiel Phillips m. Betsy Brown 20 Dec 1808, bm. William Hudson
James Phillips m. Nancy Cox 2 Jan 1857 bm. Preston Phillips
In the Surry Co. Deed Abstracts book there was reference to "the Phillips land" in 1794 being 1000 acres on Mitchel's River and Yadkin River
Thanks for your postings - any chance you have come across a will abstract for Abner or any other Surry Co. Phillips? Keep that information coming - love it!!

I wonder if these were not related to the Moore County (old Cumberland) Phillips, as some of the related names are here in Moore ,and next door to the Phillips. Has anyone more on the Moore County Phillips?

Mar 9, 1804, d. Sept. 1, 1870 and wife Nancy b. Oct 12, 1812, d. June 12, 1899. Sarah may well have been pregnant when Moses died so this was probably child #3 of that marriage)

Just in case this fits anyone's Phillips line...

I extracted the information given here in case it helps someone researching Phillips...this is not my Phillips line; but maybe it will be of use to some of you...

Page 72-73: Bible Records and Marriage Bonds, compiled by Jeannette Tillotson Acklen; originally published, 1933, reprinted 1992 by Genealogical Publishing Company for Clearfield Company, Baltimore, MD.

Joseph Philips was an early settler, emigrated in 1891
(Note: this date is obviously a typo, and probably should be 1791)

with his wife, Milbrey Horn, from Edgecomb County, N.C. to Davidson County, (TN)
and settled six miles north of Nashville. His ancestry for several generations, both paternal and maternal, were natives of Edgecomb Province under the Colonial government.
"Joseph Philips served as guide for the Continental forces and participated in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Mathew Philips, brother of Joseph Philips, commanded a regiment of troops and died preceeding the Battle of Kings Mountain, from an overdraught of water."
Joseph Philips served as Justice for Davidson County in 1796. Joseph Philips was born in Edgecomb County NC, Oct 31, 1763; died in Davidson County, TN May 22, 1832; married 1785, Milbrey Horn, born in Edgecomb County NC, Dec 4, 1764, daughter of Henry Horn, Jr., second husband of Sarah Battle, Hiliard, widow, died in Davidson Co TN Dec 19, 1851.
Children:
Mary "Polly" Phillips, born Sept 6, 1788 in NC, died in Davidson Co, TN, April 11, 1813, married April 29, 1804 as first wife of Jesse Wharton.
Sarah "Sallie" Philips, born in NC, Aug 1, 1788 (note: this maybe should be 1789?),
died in Davidson Co TN, Jan 19, 1859; married Feb 11, 1807, William Williams,born April 15, 1776, died March 6, 1862.
Rebecca Philips, born in NC April 16, 1790; died in infancy.
Martha Philips, born in Davidson County Dec 11, 1792; married Thomas Martin.
Charlotte Phillips, born Nov 25, 1795; drowned in Cumberland River July 23,1811.
Henry Horn Philips, born Sept 5, 1797; died Oct 4, 1816, unmarried.
Margaret "Peggy" Thomas Philips, born Sept 20, 1799, died ___, 1844; married, 1815, Josiah Fredrick Williams.
Joseph Hooper Philips, born Jan 2, 1803, died in infancy.
William Duncan Philips, born June 1804, died June 5, 1879; married, first,
1825, Susan B. Clark; died without issue, married second, 1828, Eliza Dwyer, born Aug 3, 1801, in Ireland; died Nov. 10, 1871.
The homestead of Joseph Philips, six miles north of Nashville, TN., was known as "Sugar Tree Grove." He and his family are buried in private burial ground on his home place.

They are not connected (that I know of) to my Ezekiel Phillips, born 1778 in MD and was in Robertson County by early 1800's; however, Ezekiel's son Preston D. Phillips, was born 1820 in Sumner County and was married in 1835 to Amanda Appleton in Davidson County TN...
I am still searching for more on Ezekiel's ancestry, and on Amanda Appleton.

I just found out that my ancestor was Samuel PHILLIPS and wife Nancy who were early settlers of Davidson Co. Tenn. His son George Washington Phillips was born in 1816 in Davidson Co. Tenn. George married Susan WRIGHT and had three children (including my Samuel Wright Phillips). After Susan's death, George married her sister Sophenia Wright and had several more children. Does anyone know about "Old Samuel and wife Nancy" of Davidson Co. Tenn?
