Ms. Moore also sent me information on the Protestant Orphan Asylum where my great aunt was, the House of Industry for Females, (not where my g grandmother was) and St. Mary's Orphan Asylum in Murfreesboro, possibly where your husband's ancestor was.

I have asked for the book to be copied, but I have not received it as yet. I have a feeling that I will not find much information of use there, but who knows?

I am descended from Peter BOND, Benjamin WHEELER, Richard COLEGATE, and Thomas JOHNSTON. My 3rd great grandparents were Barnet Johnston and Jane Thomas,married in Belair,April 1791.They migrated to Washington Co.,PA c1800.Jane Thomas was d/o William Thomas and Ann Colegate.I need parents and siblings of William.After William died,Ann married James Ward.I need parents and siblings of James. Wiliam and Ann also had daughter,Hannah,married to Charles MCFALL Would also like any info on any GRIMES or GRAHAM family. I would gladly exchange info ewith anyone interested in these lines.

...Thank you for looking at my data on Kinchen Freeman. I have reams of data, but the following is a "thumbnail sketch" outline:

I. Rutherford Co. court minutes Kinchen is mentioned in disputes and sales transactions in Jul. 1811, Jul. 1812, Jul. 1813, Jan. 1814, and Jan. 1815.

II. Tennesseeans in the War of 1812 Kinchen is listed as a private.

III. Seminole(FL) War Kinchen is listed as a private in the First TN Mounted Militia.

IV. Kinchen's Family Kinchen's wife was a full-blooded Cherokee. There was a picture of her in her tribal regalia that got destroyed in a fire. I believe her maiden name was Mae Phifer. We believe that Kinchen was born 1770-1780 and that his wife was born 1780-1790. We also believe that they were married in North Carolina around 1800. They had 2 sons, Robert and Henry, whose birthdays are unknown. They had a daughter, Lizzie (b. circa 1810), who married James Newman. They had another daughter, Patsey b. circa 1803), who married Jeremiah Odell. They had another son, Daniel Marshall (b. circa 1815), who married Margaret Hayley in 1836. He is my ancestor. He also had 4 other wives after her!

V. TN Census Data (1) Rutherford Co. 1810 1 M 0-10 2 F 0-10-- Patsey and Lizzie? 1 F 10-61 1 F 16-26--Mae 1 M 16-26 1 M 26-45--Kinchen (2) Rutherford Co. 1820 There is no Kinchen mentioned. I wonder if he was fighting in one of the Seminole Wars. There is a Robert, though. I wonder if he was considered head of the household. (3) Rutherford Co. 1830 (Actually, I could never find a Rutherford Co. census for this year. This is the TN census.) 1 M 0-5 1 F 5-10 1 M 10-15 1 F 10-15 1 M 15-20 1 F 40-50-- Mae 1 M 50-60-- Kinchen

I have no records of Kinchen beyond 1830. We hired a genealogist in North Carolina(Rosemary Richardson) who found a Kinchen in Franklin Co. NC in 1800. She believed that this was "our" Kinchen who moved to Rutherford Co. in TN. It would help if we could find any record of his marriage, or if we could find who came with him to TN. I wonder if any records from the war of 1812 or from the Seminole Wars would be of benefit. It would also be nice to know of any other records of Kinchen's life in Rutherford Co.

I realize that you are a very busy person, and I appreciate any guidance that you can provide. I am quite willing to pay you (or some other experienced genealogist) for your work. Thank you very much.

In 1788 Samuel Crockett built a block-house or fort on the place where his son, Capt. M. D. Crockett, now lives. This served as a defense in times of danger for all those who had settled in that neighborhood. The Indians finally became so troublesome that the women and children were sent away to the stronger forts, while the men remained to [p.831] look after the crops. With all the precautions taken by the community, a young lady, a daughter of Thomas Norris, was killed by the Indians, and Patrick Martin was wounded. Besides those mentioned the following persons settled in this vicinity and to the southwest of it: Benjamin Nail, Joseph Martin, Thomas Martin, Henry Frey, George Williams, George Murphy, Thomas Jamison, Julius Justice, James and Hardy Bryant and Thomas Holmes. In the same year that Crockett located, the Forts formed a settlement on the north side of Red River, not far from where Adams Station now is. Others who found homes in this part of the county within the next few years were John and James Johnson, Thomas and James Gunn, Corbin Hall, Jesse Gardner, Isaac Menees, Jeremiah and Benjamin Batts and John Bell. Thomas and Henry Johnson, John and Benjamin McIntosh, Anderson, Archer, Edward and John B. Cheatham, William and Jonathan Huddleston, Richard Crunk, Martin Duncan, John Edwards, Joseph Hardaway and Jacob McCarty all settled in what is now the Ninth Civil District previous to 1795.

The county was so named in honor of Gen. James Robertson, the founder of the Cumberland settlements. William Johnson, Sr., James Norfleet, John Young, John Donelson and Samuel Crockett were appointed locating commissioners to fix the seat of justice. By an act passed April 20, 1796......

From 1812 to 1815 the county furnished its full quota for service in the Indian wars and against the British in New Orleans. The enlistments were mostly for only a few months' service, although many enlisted two or three times. A company of mounted infantry was raised by Capt. John Crane, of which James Cook was first lieutenant, and Josiah D. Hudelston second lieutenant. Among the privates of this company were John Ferguson, John Duncan; Alexander, Benjamin and James Rawls; William, John, James and Nathaniel Crockett; Matthew Morris, Daniel Clark, Samuel Farmer, Patrick Martin and William Mansco.

The county court began its first session July 18, 1796, at the house of Jacob McCarty. The magistrates who were present and took the oath of office were William Fort, William Miles, Benjamin Menees, Isaac Phillips, Bazel Boren, Martin Duncan, John Phillips, Zebulon Hart and James Crabtree. William Fort was chosen chairman, and Thomas Johnson clerk.

The original site for the town of Springfield was obtained from Thomas Johnson and Archer Cheatham. The town was soon after laid off into lots, containing seventy-seven square rods. These were sold at a uniform price of $8 each. The first purchasers were Archer Cheatham, William Lusk, George Bell, Archer Cheatham, Jr., John Phillips, Thomas Johnson, Richard Mathews, Robert Curry, Joseph Pankey, Charles Simmons, John Hutchison, Joseph Wray, John Cheatham, Jacob Young, Lucy Parker and Thomas Stewart.

Black Jack is a small village in the northern part of the county. It was located by Mr. Phillips in 1848, when he built a store-house and dwelling. There are two mercantile firms now doing business there--Samuels & King and Mr. True. Drs. Moore and Brodie are the physicians, ...

The first paper published in the county was The Cumberland Presbyterian. It was, as its name implies, a religious weekly devoted to the interests of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It had previously been published in Nashville, and was removed to Springfield in 1839. The editors were Rev. James Smith and Rev. D. R. Harris. At the end of six months its publication was suspended. In 1847 Grant & Ligon established The Springfield Spy, a six-column folio, devoted to the interests of the Whig party. Two years later the publication was transferred to Kirk & McNelley who changed the name to Robertson Backwoodsman, and afterward to The Springfield Intelligencer. In 1853 they sold the office to J. L. Davis who published The Dollar Weekly American until the close of 1855. During the next year The Robertson Democracy was established by Mason & Shropshire, but was suspended during the same year. In 1859 G. W. Davis & Co. began the publication of a Whig paper called The Springfield Speculator. In 1862 Morgan's cavalry took charge of the office and printed one edition of his Vidette, a war sheet. In a few weeks thereafter a command of Federal troops took posession of the town, and learning that Morgan had used the office, broke the press, and threw the type, etc., out of the second story window. In April, 1866, M. V. Ingram and Archer Thomas, under the firm name of M. V. Ingram & Co. established The Robertson Register, a little folio only fourteen by eighteen inches in size. In October 1868, Ingram removed the material to Clarksville, Tenn., leaving Thomas with a small job office. April 16, 1869, the first number of The Springfield Record was issued by Thomas Bros. who continued its publication until 1881 when B. F. Thomas withdrew leaving Archer Thomas as sole editor and proprietor. March 6, 1882, his office with all its contents was burned. With characteristic energy, Mr. Thomas immediately procured a new outfit, and on March 23 The Record appeared again. In November, 1883, he sold the office to the Record Publishing Company, but on April 1, 1885, repurchased it, and is now sole proprietor. The Record is Democratic in politics, has a large circulation and exerts a wide influence.

The Cumberland Presbyterian Church has five organizations in Robertson County. Mt. Sharon Church was organized in 1824, the elders being Samuel Crockett, Shadrach Rawls and --- Houston. Among the other members were Benjamin, James, Joseph, Nancy and Sally Rawls, Nancy and Polly Parker, and Mary Binkley. John Beard, Eli and William Guthrie administered to the congregation in its early years. The church at Springfield was organized about 1837, the elders and trustees being Richard C. Cheatham, Benjamin Rawls, Daniel Clark, John Adams and William Seal. The present brick church was erected about 1839. McKissick Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized about 1860 by W. J. McKissick, Dr. House and Richard Clayton, with twenty-five or thirty members, who have since increased to about forty. Their place of worship is a frame house built upon land donated by Mr. McKissick. Mt. Denson is the only other church of this denomination in the county.

Col. Richard Colegate settled in Baltimore County as early as July 31, 1697. He seems to have owned a great deal of land and was active in local and colonial politics.

This information I received through a my Grandmother. Which got me started in genealogy. The original papers were memographed and were from Lois (a cousin of my grandmothers) who was excepted into the D.A.R. though this research. I have been wanting to contact someone about seeing if I could get the family charts and so forth. Her D.A.R. national number is129690. I hope that this helps you out. I'll dig around some more and see if I can find anything else that might help. Look forward in future communications.

Sarah Phillips, I believe was from Houston Co. The Winters were already in Houston (or Stewart) Co(s) When George Winters and Sarah C. Phillips were married (1880) They lived in Houston Co. in 1880-1885. I am interested in her line of Phillips. George Winters [had] two daughters, (by a previous wife) that married Brakes. (these were my grandfather's [half]sisters. 1. Mattie Winters: she was the daughter of George Winters and Ann K. Beaver-she was born in 1850. She married the Rev. Thomas Brake. I don't have the info at hand, but I am sure they are buried in the Winters-Moseley Cemetery in stewart Co. George Winters was a baptist minister. 2.Nancy Winters: she was the daughter of George winters and Ann K. Beaver.George and Ann were married , 3-7-1849 in Stewart Co. Nancy was born 1852 Nancy married the Reverend Clark Brake.

If you are in Hendersonville, TN There was a Reverend Herman Clyde Brake there a few years ago. I believe he is descended from Mattie Winters and Thomas Brake.

(Sarah C. Phillips may not have been from Houston Co, but probably would have been close to Houston Co.)

James Hunt Sr and Mary Rackley also had a daughter named Lucy who married John Teasley, born 1755, They had a son John W Teasley Sr. b. 28 Dec 1788, who married Mary Hunter, in NC; Their child John W Teasley Jr. m Sarah Nicholson b. 1825; Their son Louis Scott Teasley married Melivina Tennessee ? Their dau. Leila Bell Teasley m. James Bailey BASFORD; I am tracing all Basford lines in this area. My greatgrandmother was Rebecca Lou Basford. The dau. of Zachariah Basford of Robertson, Cheatham Co.

GOWER: Now as for the Gowers, again we trace a different sibling. I have a Abel Gower Sr. who died in Davidson Co 1780. He came to TN on Donaldson flatboat. You list him as the II, I do not have his parents. I do have my Abel married to Mary ?, You have Mary Robertson, sister to James; I have the children of Abel Sr and Mary as the following: Russel, Charles, Engley, (m. Russell),Obedience, Elizabeth, Matthew,Able JR, David, and Nancy (m Moss).

If their son Russell is your Rev. Russel who went to MO. we are still on the right track. BUT you have Russell's son listed as Robert born 1717, this is much to early a date for my Russel to have, to be your Russell. Also I do not have a Robert listed as a Child of Russell unless it is James who is listed as James R. Gower. I have Russel married to Charlotte ?. Their children were, Wilson, Joseph, Charlotte, Abel III, Nancy, Samuel (m. Koen), Elisha (m Patterson), William, (m. Crutchfield), James R. (m Evans)

Wilson L above, son of Russell was born 1793, on Gower Island, in Davidson Co TN He married Charlotte Baird, 1812 and 2nd, Lucinda Page. 1820. Thier Children where. James Wilson, William, Shursey, Ephriam, Hiram, Larkin,(m Grimes.

James Wilson Gower was a Free Will Baptist Minister and was married to Milly Head, the brother of George Head who was also a Free Will Baptist Minister. James and George and others were the founders of HEAD'S FREE WILL BAPTIST Church in Robertson Co. in the Gause Community. George Head gave the land , thus the Name "Head's" I descend from the Head family. George is a brother to my Hugh Head who were both sons of Robert Head It just so happens that I grew up in Head's Church and later became a Free Will Baptist minister now serving in Florida.

I Have much more information on the lines of the Gowers. They married into my Head's several more times. The Wilson Gower bible is now in the Lib. of Head's Church and I used it along with Wilson Gower decendant information as well as other records to create this data. If you can use any of this and correct any I would appreciate it.

About the time she moved to Monongalia (and subsequently to Trumbull Co., OH, with another son, and where she d.), other members of her Colgate and Wheeler relatives moved to the same sw PA/WVA and Ohio areas. I imagine some also moved further west as well as into states south of the Ohio R.

I did not persue any of these Colgate relatives, other than not being surprised when seeing the name crop up in those areas.

If you can locate in your neighboring libraries, or borrow it on Inter-Library Loan, you should look at the Colgate family's genealogy. It was researched and written by the Colgate family of soap and toothpaste fame. Though not of Richard's line, they came from Surrey also, in the 1840's, and were very poor, distant relatives.

According to their family genealogy book during the Civil War their hog farm, which had been a losing affair, they had turned into a tallow works and then, during the war, into the making of munitions for the Union govt. When they became wealthy, they researched and published the book on their Colgates. Having been so poor, in Surry and in MD, descendants of younger sons, they wanted to show in their book the heraldry, etc., they wre not entitlled to use. So they included Richard's branch (who was), as well as another distant line which had immigrated after Richard but before their own line. So, to make it look like they weren't just trying to cozy up to Richard's line they included data on this other bunch too.

I tell you all this so you'll be able to explore those three major lines in searching for yours. Your best bet is to look at the soap family's book. In exploring your family, withy those three separate families in mind, look at Col. Richard's descendants' given names. Also, those other two branches' descndants' names. Keeping them in mind, start working backward from your parents and grandparents, in the area where you were born and your parents, etc. Always work backward in time.

The Lynches are a hard nut to crack as there were so many different Lynch origins, some from Harford Co., MD, of old famlies there, some from NE, PA, WVA, old VA. and all over the South, from Ky to the Gulf and Atlantic states. Some were Irish, some English. There is a book about Lynch families in all those states and origins. I think it's called "Lynch Families in the Southern States". Many libraries carry it, I think. You might be able to get it, too, on Inter-Library Loan. Your Lynch family might or mjght not be in it. Good luck and happy hunting!

Peggy (Smith) Bussey's father was preacher, Amos Smith, who had 7 sons in War of 1812. I would appreciate knowing about this SMITH family, who may have moved here from Harford Co., MD, from where the Busseys emigrated to Monongalia.

INTRODUCTION The Diana Roberts Thompson Genealogical Collection is centered around genealogical research compiled by Rebecca Starley Roberts. Family names included are Avary, Childress, Connally, Forbes, Kirksey, Lane, Rakestraw, and Starley. The donor is Diana Roberts Thompson, Nashville, Tennessee. The collection occupies 1.00 cubic feet of shelf space and numbers approximately 600 items. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the Diana Roberts Thompson Genealogical Collection may be made for purposes of scholarly research.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Diana Roberts Thompson Genealogical Collection, 1750-1970, is centered around the family tree of Rebecca Starley Roberts. The collection includes information on the family names of Avary, Childress, Connally, Forbes, Kirksey, Lane, Rakestraw, and Starley. The genealogical research covers Texas, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

The collection primarily consists of research notes, charts, and correspondence, although it also includes some historical documents, both originals and copies. A large part of the research was done to prepare for D.A.R. membership; applications and supporting documentation are, therefore, also included. Box 2, folder 8 contains a special set of research papers submitted to Rebecca Starley Roberts by genealogist Katherine W. Ewing. This research focuses on the Tennessee counties of Knox, Maury, Lawrence, and Giles, and is largely taken from the county records and federal census returns.

On a recent visit to the Cumberland County (PA) historical society i was able to look through a collection of maps drafted in the 1950's-60's by a Dr. John Miller. I was looking for a way to locate the present- day boundaries of the land my ancestor was granted in the mid- eighteenth century; the land grants refer only to trees and rocks. I located a map drawn by Dr. Miller that does exactly what i hoped for; it shows all the original land grant surveys overlaid on a modern map. The map that i copied depicts the area between Carlisle and Mechanicsburg...the northern boundry is about halfway between trindle road and rt 11...the southern boundry is the yellow breeches. i realize this is a small fraction of Cumberland County, but just in case this could help anyone else here is the list of grantees...

I also have a copy of Historical Marker in Davidson Co.: "HEATON'S STATION On this bluff in 1780, pioneers who came with James Robertson built Heatons' (also spelled Eaton's) station. It and two other forts (Nashborough and Freeland's) withstood all Indian attacks and saved the Cumberland settements. On the river below were successively a buffalo ford, ferry and Lock l. The home of Amos Heaton stood 100 feet north."

To my knowledge, the last cemetery transcriptions published was the "Tombstone Records of Cheatham County Tennessee" Edited by Denis Dozier Haile and James E. Garrett, Jr.

There are still copies of this publication available but there have been many burials since that have not been recorded.

A conversation with Mr. Garrett some months back revealed that he was not interested in having the records of tombstones published on the internet as it might hurt sales.

There can be no prohibition, however, against anyone, going out and transcribing the tombstones in a cemetery on their own and then posting them to the internet at a url as indicated above. That is what is currently being done with Forest Hill Cemetery. We have found several errors and ommissions from the 1985 publication and have, of course, updated it and continue to include recent burials. Thanks be to [email protected] (She may be able to provide more information regarding the "how to" of it all.

It is presently a good time of the year to get out and read/transcribe them tombstones and record them for posterity.

P.S. The only 15 letter word that can be spelled without repeating a letter is "uncopyrightable" - read that somewhere - is applicable to tombstone transcriptions.

What I borowed from my aunt, is a diagram with plots and names. Sadly, no dates are listed, but that would be a good project to take on..especially as you point out, spring is coming. Another sad note, I have seen the diagram before but this is the first time I've seen it with my parents on it. There are many there tho, that have no names..in the back of the cemetary, just rocks as headstones.

I'm putting together a proposal for the cemetary committee on another issue with the cemetary and will, of course, run this by them. Hopefully, it will be a 'thumbs up" from them, and if so, that will be my go-ahead if no one else has this anywhere on the net.

... I think that the more of this info on the net the more people who benefit. Some would still wish to have the book, so it wouldn't totally eliminate sales.

Located on Broad River and directly across the river from the home of Ben Sumner (Foxhaven). It is located on a road that runs to a two story home on former Lynch plantation. A road in 1800s crossed the river between the Morris and Lynch plantations and apparently at the top of the hill above the Lynch place was a Methodist Church. Nancy was born 1852 Nancy married the Reverend Clark Brake. If you are in Hendersonville, TN There was a Reverend Herman Clyde Brake there a few years ago. I believe he is descended from Mattie Winters and Thomas Brake. (Sarah C. Phillips may not have been from Houston Co, but probably would have been close to Houston Co.) Is Linda Rye the daughter of Ryman A. Brake, (married Francis Horner) (the Winters-Moseley Cemetery is by Carlisle TN.) [Me again] here is my father-in-laws address. Could you give it to Linda Rye for me? I am sure he'd love to speak with her. She said when she was doing research on her GM, she found this info. She also said she had two brothers and one sister to marry into the Lynch Family. Said she would furnish living members if desired. She is Carolyn Blair, 106 Davis ST S, Carthage, TN 37030. I cannot seem to tie to this Geary. You'all have any ideas?

What she sent was a handwritten page. Did not say who prepared it.

Folks seem to be fairly sure that Harvey's father was Aaron, brother of Tyree and son of John. Would you go along with that?

I never knew him, but I believe he is the one whose tombstone Jerry found to be located at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery (see quoted text below).

I had a great gandfather whose name John Osment he was born in 1831 in Exeter, England. He was buried at Almora cemetry in Jersey, Channel Islands He was Married to Elizabeth Briton.
