LWT of James Crocket, Allen Twp, Cumberland Co, PA, Book E, page 205, dated 16 July (codicil 17 July) 1790 was proved 31 Dec 1790. It names wife: Margaret; son: John; daughters: Elizabeth (wife of Thomas McCormick); Agness (wife of James Magovney); Mary (Brodrick); Margaret (wife of Robert Thompson); Jean; Rebecka. Exec's: Wife Margaret, son John, and trusty friend Thomas Johnston. Wit.: George Dickie, James Crocket, Wm Scott.

LWT of Samuel Martin, of Allen, d 2 March 1781, p 2 July 1785: wife (name not shown); sons Samuel, Andrew, Thomas; dau. Margaret Crocket (and her son John) and Jean Bringham.

A query in files of Cum. Co. Hist. Soc. at Carlisle asks about Agnes and has 1750 for birth; 1778/79 for marriage; died Adams Co, OH. Other sources show Agnes had sister Elizabeth McCormick born ca 1759 who moved with Thomas McCormick [1754-- 1826] ca 1775 to Lycoming Valley in PA. Also, Rebecca (exec'd Margaret's LWT 1813) marr. Jacob Edelblute; Huntingdon Co.

George Crocket died 1782. LWT d 2 May 1782, p 31 Oct 1782 (D, 122) named brothers James and Andrew and sisters, nieces, and nephews. James McGovney was witness. James Crocket died in 1790, leaving a LWT described above. Andrew Crocket LWT d 15 Oct 1791, p 14 Nov 1791. Wife: Elizabeth. Minors: James, Sarah, Andrew ("three youngest"). Daughters: Elizabeth (McGowan); Alice (Keepers, mother of Andrew Keepers).

James, George, and Andrew had sisters Catherine Hasson (possibly w/o Jonathan); Margaret; and Martha (married whom?) who had daughter Betsey by 1791. Most of their lands were on the north bank of YBC opposite other Crocketts. Andrew warranted "Dalebrook" and "Springfield". George "Hopewell" and "Ringsend".  James "Allenbury" and "Fairfield", a little of which was on south side of YBC. Sometimes the heirs completed the patent process.

Norman Keefer, Hist. of Mechanicsburg, PA, p 93 (1976) says they got land in 1748, but I have not been able to find this.  
Also, that one brother "built Fairfield Hall and a modern brick homestead. Another built . . . Rose Balcony. The third brother erected a large stone home across from Allenberry." He then mistakenly tries to connect them with the Davy Crockett family.

In 1755 James, Andrew, and George were old enough to wit. deed for land by the Boiling Spring. It seems clear that the six were not children of William [d ca 1772] of south bank of YBC. Of whom then? One possibility is Alexander Crocket. The 1750 East Pennsborough Twp tax list has one Alex Crocket and one William Crocket. On 9 June 1750 Samuel Culberson bought land adjoining Alexander Crocket and Widow Rankin; his survey 7 May 1753 shows on west "James Crocket formerly Alexr Crocket". No tax list for 1751, 1752. The E. Pennsb. tax list for 1753 has one William, James, George, and William jr. Another 1753 list was made when Allen was formed from E. P.; it has three Williams, one James, and one George. So Alexander may have died between 1750--1753.
But why was no one named for him? Crocketts on both sides of YBC used William, James, John, and George as most frequent men's names. Explanation needed.

The William on the south side of YBC died ca 1772, ten years before George [died 1782] and so, even if he were a brother, would not have been named in George's LWT. William could have been the William junior of 1753. This is far too speculative!
William's children were James [d by 1806] m: Catherine Chestnut; George [1762/63--1835] m:Jane; Mary (John Graham); Martha (Wm Barber); Elizabeth (Jacob Miller); Catharine. The last to carry the Crockett name in Cumb. Co seems to have been James Crocket, William's grandson, buried Churchtown 1856. Outside PA, Wm's great-grandson, James R., s/o John [d 1728] and Keziah (Kurtz) was taken to Stark Co OH by guardian Adam H. Baughman by 1838.

(1) 1750 Lancs. Co, PA, James Crocket wit. LWT (J1-211) of John Rinkin 1 Feb 1749/50, proved 25 Feb 1749/50. Crockets were neighbors of Rinkin/Rankin/Renkin family. Richard Rankin had land on E of Crocketts.
(2) Richard Reinkin and James Crocket wit. LWT of John Dickey 1773.
(3) Richard Rankin and James Crockit wit. LWT of John McNeal in 1777.
(4) Martha Long (widow of John) and James Crocket exec's of LWT (1764) of James Long of Allen Twp, neighbor of Samuel Martin and others. Wm Crocket was a witness.
(5) 1771 James Crocket was exec of James Cragehed.
(6) 1771 James wit. LWT of James Reed. Did James marry first a Rankin or was he only being neighborly as witness?

YBC was site of iron works next to Crocketts. Boiling Springs was laid out 1845 on former Dickey land; later became vacation and tourist site. James's land on YBC was sold to George Beltzhoover by exec's in 1798, but area is still called Allenbury. A modern resort on land now has a "Crockett Room".

Some other Crocketts of original Cumb. Co went to Robertson Co, TN. In modern terms they were from Wild Cat Creek, Perry Co, PA.

After the 1864 birth of Edward, the family removed to Missouri. I need to establish that they were in New Madrid Co., MO between 1865-1869, as my ancestor Elnora "Malissa" married there in 1869. However, the John Crockett/Rebecca Jane Bailey family was enumerated on both the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Lincoln Co., MO. The family story has always been that when Elnora Malissa married at age 16, she never saw her family again.

Is anyone else researching these lines? I would very much appreciate any information, particularly on the siblings of Elnora Malissa", and will be glad to share my research.

For whatever reason, probably investment, Samuel acquired land in what would become Obion Co, TN as early as 1812. Later his sons Samuel and Nathaniel bought land there. They don't seem to have lived there. John, Samuel's brother, had a son John M. Crockett, born in Humphreys Co, TN 1810 who did mover there and died in Obion Co, TN 1878. He was married several times. His second wife in 1843 was Grace Crockett, died 1845, buried at Troy, TN, where tombstone says "daughter of Isaac Crockett of York Co, SC". (I could explain why it says York not Lancaster but that's too long a story.) So here we have two distinct Crockett families meeting in Tennessee. As Gracey was buried with an infant, it is supposed that she died in childbirth and there are no descendants of this union. She was probably born ca 1821.

Part II: Crocketts of Lancaster County, SC

Isaac CROCKETT died in Lancaster Co, SC in 1831. Grace, his widow, died in 1837. Both made wills, but Grace's was mistakenly carried to Tennessee when the friend with whom it was left moved.
As it was unknown in SC, John P. CROCKETT petitioned the Court of Equity in 1839 for distribution. He became administrator of her estate but in time his letters of administration were revoked.
Isaac made John P. CROCKETT executor along with Gracey CROCKETT. Although Lancaster Co wills were burned by Sherman's soldiers, Isaac's had at least been abstracted into Court of Equity records. He left a wife and ten children not individually named in the will. The whole estate was left in Gracey's hands for her to maintain and educate the children until the youngest came of age 21 or married, directing her to advance to each child as they came of age or married property equal to two of his children who had already received advances from him. When all were of age or married, he directed, then his whole estate was to be equally divided amongst his children except that the one-third part which he devised absolutely to Grace. But Grace died before all had reached 21 or married, leaving Isaac's estate not fully distributed, and then there was a mixup over her will and a lot of arithmetic for the equity commissioner to do. She left to John P. Crockett the 1/3 which was her's from Isaac's will, though at first no one knew this. Isaac petitioned the court in 1839 for that sum. The will does not say which two had received advances, but elsewhere it says Archibald and Mrs Garrison (Jane M.). The estate of Isaac Crockett was valued at $6,619.78.
Guardian Reports were required annually in Lancaster Co, SC.
Every July the Commissioner listed which reports had been filed and which had not. John P. Crockett filed in 1841 as guardian of Elijah B. Crockett. Again in 1842. The July 1843 annual report: "The court further reports that John P Crockett Guardian of Elijah B Crockett, since the making & filing his return, has removed to the State of Tennessee taking his ward with him. The Estate of the ward the Comr. understands has been left with his securities to the Guardianship Bond & the Securities the Comr.regards abundantly solvent."
In 1844 he failed to make a return from Tennessee and the securities were to be informed. The July 1845 reports says that the securities have made the return. "They are very responsible gentlemen, & the Estate of the ward is well secured in their possession."
The July 1847 annual report says that "the ward after arriving of age . . . has been settled with on full" on April 5, 1847, by M. C. Heath and Thomas K. Cureton. Elijah B. Crockett lived 03/06/1826--02/02/1869 so this was around his 21stbirthday.
As for Isaac Crockett's property which was sold, 290 acres on Twelve Mile Creek, adjoining lands of J. P. Crockett, Jno R. Wright, and others, was bid off by Marcus E. Tuttle who assigned the bid to Allen Morrow. It brought just over $5.14 per acre.
It was auctioned at Bellair, a post-office village in the Lancaster Co, SC, panhandle, near Six Mile Creek. Adjoining land went to John P. Crockett as an inheritance through his mother, Gracy. There were several slaves sold: to John P. Crockett with Allen Morrow and James W. White on his bond, James McCulloch with James Robinson and Drury Morrow on the bond, Darling J. Childers with Lewis Gill and Leroy Secrest on his bond, and Richard Cousar with Simon Beckham on his bond. Also sold were one old bureau for $7.75 to James Robinson and bedstead and bedding to B. F.Davidson for $19.75.
A plat of Isaac's land was included showing 491 acres on Twelve Mile Creek adjoining William Delaney, Allen Morrow, James Gordon, James R. Rodgers, John R. Wright and others. A mill branch of Twelve Mile Creek and a mill appear on the plat. Six Mile Creek is also shown. Moses C. Heath and Allen Morrow were guardians of Harvey,  Gracey, and Elijah as of 1839. In July 1840, John P. Crockett became guardian of Elijah B. Crockett, having Thomas K. Cureton and Moses C. Heath on his bond.
(Allen MORROW's first wife Agnes Houston POTTS [1812--1833] was a daughter of William and Levica (CROCKETT) POTTS. I know of no CROCKETT connection for Moses Chappell HEATH other than that he married Allen Morrow's sister Mary. The Six Mile Presbyterian church was built on land donated by Allen Morrow, but that was some years before he purchased the Crockett land.)

In Lancaster Co, SC, in 1841 William Crockett was paid $150. In 1842, James Robinson collected $193.30 1/2 in right of his wife and the same for each as agent for Archibald Crockett, Isaac H. Crockett, and B. Garrison & wife. In 1844, William Potts collected as attorney for Archibald Crockett, B. Garrison and wife Jane, while Jno L. Robinson acted on behalf of James Robinson and wife Louisa (or Levica?). In 1846, William Potts acted as attorney to collect for Robert W. Crockett. In 1846 H. R. Price collected as administrator of Gracy Crockett's estate. The guardianship files (loose papers) of Lancaster County, SC, include mostly the material copied into guardianship books, but there is little more. There is a receipt signed by Elijah.
An heir whose name looks like "Louisa" in the book looks more like "Lavisa" in this copy. Perhaps she was a "Levica", a name not uncommon at the time, which became "Levicy" as a nickname.
Isaac may have had a sister of that name who married William Potts as his first wife.
There is a letter dated 16 Dec 1847 written in Obion ("Obine") Co, TN, by John P. and Phebe M. Crockett. The envelope is addressed to Frederick Ezzell of Belair, Lancaster County (a former post office in the panhandle, near Six Mile Creek). This was Phebe's family.
It begins:
"Farther brothers & sisters and frends onst more take my pen to hand to write you a few lines we are all well an has been well all this seson and hope that these few lines may find you all enjoying the same."
It is extremely difficult to read, mostly because of the ink bleeding through the paper. Under magnification, however, I have picked out phrases which indicate that the letter is about how well the crops have been, matters of health, and such. It got into the guardianship file because John P. Crockett disagreed with James Witherspoon's about who should be paid how much of the commission for the guardianship of Elijah B. Crockett. He asked the Ezells to show the letter to Witherspoon and they must have left it with him.
(These papers are now at the SC Archives.) The name Thomas J. Ezzell appears in this section of the letter.
John says, as far as I can make out,
"I went down to see charles legits and took all of my family an stade too weekes and found them all well and the friends well we was at charlott houston old Ester houston James and Jorge Bonds James dunes Jane morrison Eleck and John houston Ruben wethers Dred gayes I saw a letter from Jane ivy and from sikiel houston that give us ...from that contry".

I believe the names here are Leggitt, Houston, Bonds, Dunn, Morrison, Weathers, Ivey, and Gay.
There was one Charles S. LEGETT who married Mary "EZEL" in Mecklenburg Co, NC 6 March 1828 (source: the LDS/IGI). She may have been kin to Phebe, perhaps an aunt. However the 1850 census of Obion Co, TN shows one Charles Liggit 44 NC with wife whose name looks like Hixey 38 TN, and oldest child Minnerva born ca 1832 in TN. For now, it is not clear whom John and familyvisited.
It says that
"ther has been no deth amonst us som marriges Wm B robertson to malinda crockett A Cs dauter Jacky Brown to agnes reeves".
Elsewhere:
"our yongest we call her malinda crockett for A C daugter".
I believe "A C" referred to Archibald Crockett, John's older brother who had married Eleanor Weathers.

Isaac CROCKETT, possibly a son of Robert CROCKETT and nephew of Archibald CROCKETT (discussion of this another time), was married to Grace POTTS, daughter of John and Agnes (HOUSTON) POTTS. The HOUSTONs in the letter may have been kin.

At #1049 was one William ROBERTSON (27, SC) with wife Malinda (23, SC) and son William (1, TN). The following household was Mary ROBERTSON (55, NC), Benjamin (25, SC), and Samuel (23, SC). Then came James ROBERTSON (36, NC), no wife, but several children, including one named Archibald. I cannot prove that William and Malinda were the couple named in John's letter, but I copied it in case.
Back in Union Co, NC (formed from Mecklenburg Co), Frederick IZZELL (45, NC) and Rebecca (45) were at dwelling #457. Next was Thomas J. IZZELL (25, NC) at #458, who is mentioned (with "Ezzell" spelling) in the John P. CROCKETT letter.
The EZELLs had as neighbors two aunts and an uncle of John Potts CROCKETT. At #452 was James ROBINSON (73, NC) with Margaret W. (65, NC). This was Grace (POTTS) CROCKETT's sister "Peggy" who married on 03/14/1803, James ROBINSON. At #456 was Wm POTTS (63, NC); he lived 09/10/1788--01/22/1856 and married 1st Levica CROCKETT (ca 1787--02/08/1827); both were buried at Providence Church (NC). William was a brother of Grace (POTTS) CROCKETT. At #460, Susan STITT (64). This would be Grace (POTTS) CROCKETT's sister Susan POTTS who married a STITT.
Did you know that Archibald Crockett, the oldest son of Isaac and Grace, was sheriff in Obion Co, TN and was hanged by outlaws inOct 1865?

Just yesterday I got a letter from a gentleman in Corinth who tells me that The Rev Samuel Agnew, an early minister of the Bethany Presbyterian church in Lee Co kept a diary which has been preserved, and a copy has been placed at the library in Tupelo. One of John K. Crockett's sons, Eli, belonged to Bethany. Agnew also wrote a church history with genealogical details of families. I know this is quite a way from your geographical area of research, but I thought I'd mention it in case you know someone else in MS who might be interested.

As for other counties, Kathryn Jones's Crockett Cousins mentions one Nathaniel Crockett who moved from Tennessee and was of Neshoba County when he sold Marshall Co land in 1838. His brother Samuel who was on the 1870 census of Marshall Co with wife Mary Ann. But these were sons of Samuel Crockett [1759--1841] of Cumberland Co, PA and Robertson Co, TN.

I'm sure you are on the right track. Isaac Crockett signed the Mecklenburg Co, NC marriage bond on 12 Nov 1797 for Jennet Crockett and John Parks. She was very likely one of Robert Crockett's descendants,although, as has been said, who were from Robert and who from Archibald is a mess beyond sorting out.

French and Armstrong, page 430, included a letter from Mrs Edgar C Robertson of Mariana AR who claimed descent from John and Jane (Crockett) Park of NC. Son Isaac (born 25 Nov 1804) married Matilda Mooney. "They moved to Tenn., and died in Obion Co." Isaac had a brother Moses and named a son Moses.
We can only speculate that Isaac Park was named for Isaac Crockett. For what it's worth, Isaac Crockett's wife Gracey (Potts) had a niece Mary McCullogh (ca 1813--05/30/1838) who married James Parks.

He was buried in Sam Crockett Orchard near his home, Barr, Tate co, MS. He was married to Elizabeth L MCGRAW about 1845 in Marshall Co, MS. Elizabeth L MCGRAW was born on 6 Mar 1825 in Robertson Co, TN, the eighth child of Cornelius and Elizabeth "Betty" Hundley McGraw. She died on 27 Apr 1900 in Barr, Tate Co, MS. She was buried in Mt Vernon Cemetery, Desoto Co, MS.

77. Sarah Ann CROCKETT died before 9 Mar 1870 in Williamson Co, TN.She was married to NEAL. Sarah Ann CROCKETT and NEAL had no known children.

I too am looking for the parents of my gre-gr-grandmother, ELNORA Malissa Crockett. She was born 28 Jan 1853 in Humphreys Co., TN, daughter of John Crockett and Rebecca Jane Bailey. At least I'm hoping that's the family into which she fits. They were in Humphreys Co., TN at the 1850 census (before Elnora's birth) with children William "Henry" Crockett b. 1846 and Emily J. b. abt. 1849. Rebecca Jane Bailey Crockett apparently had been married before as her ten-year-old son, Olivery Myrick was also living with them. They were in Jersey Co., IL at the 1860 Census-- Elnora married in New Madrid Co., MO in 1869, but her parents moved to Lincoln Co., MO and were there at the 1870 census on until their deaths. There have been several other women in this line named ELNORA in honor of Elnora Malissa.  
It's my belief that Elnora's father(?) descends from the Crocketts who were first found in Cumberland Co., PA and then Robertson/Williamson Counties, TN before they arrived in Humphreys Co. Any information would be much appreciated.

SAMUEL CROCKETT I, son of JAMES CROCKETT and MARTHA MONTGOMERY of Ireland emigrated to America c1715 at age 21. He m ESTHER THOMPSON CROCKETT c1733. Their first child was b 1735 in Prince Edward Co., VA and then they moved to present-day Wythe Co., VA. They had 8 children b 1735-1749: SAMUEL II, ANN AGNES, JOHN, JANE, CATHERINE, ROBERT, ANDREW I, and JAMES.

Son ANDREW CROCKETT I m SARAH ELLIOTT and they moved to Davidson Co., TN (now Williamson Co. - not Williams) in 1799. Their children included SARAH, MARY, JAMES, SAMUEL III, JOHN HAMILTON, NANCY BAKER, ANDREW II, and ROBERT.

SAMUEL CROCKETT III, b 11-1-1772, m JOANNAH SAYERS, b 11-20-1772, and they had 11 children: ANDREW III, JOHN SAYERS, ROBERT, SAMUEL IV, SALLY ELLIOTT (m JOHN RAMSEY BAIN - my 2-great grandfather), LUCINDA JOANNAH, LOUISA, ESTHER THOMPSON, NANCY HAMILTON, MARY SAYERS, and DAVID.

ANDREW CROCKETT III, b 11-13-1798, m CATHERINE WALKER BELL 4-2-1818 (CATHERINE b 2-21-1798 in Davidson Co., d 2-14-1890 in Williamson Co.).  
Their second child was SAMUEL b 11-17-1821 but reported to have d 2-9-1822.
Could this have been your SAMUEL THOMPSON CROCKETT?

This information was obtained from "Vol V of Notable Southern Families -
The Crockett Family and Connecting Lines" by Janie Preston Collup French and Zella Armstrong (1928). The book has many mis-printed and incorrect dates (For example, on page 86 alone on the descendants of SAMUEL MC CUTCHEON BAIN there are 10 erroneous dates).
