 Fentress County, Tennessee

Fentress County was formed in 1823 from lands in the Eastern part of Overton County in addition to Morgan, and White counties. It is bordered by, Overton, Pickett, Scott, Morgan and Cumberland Counties. Named for Hon. James Fentress, Speaker of the House of Representatives in Tennessee. There was a courthouse fire in 1905 and many County records were destroyed. Coal mining, lumber, farming and oil drilling were early industries.

Statewide registration of births and deaths began in 1914, with general compliance achieved by the early 1920s. Some earlier attempts were also made at recording these events, though they are fragmented. Marriages have been recorded on a county basis since as early as 1778, though many counties are incomplete or missing until as late as the 1850s.
For births and deaths between 1 July 1908 and 30 June 1912, and after 1 January 1914; and for marriages after 1945, write:

York's Fentress County Tennessee database of over 351,000 individuals linked
to Fentress County is now available on Rootsweb.com at the following URL:
It does not give names and data on the living, but will be a great resource
for those searching their Fentress County roots. Bruce E. York has spent
nearly over 15 years developing the database as a community service to Fentress, Overton and Pickett
Counties. It includes information from every Fentress County census (1830 to
1930), the 1987 History of Fentress County, two cemetery books, marriage
book, other published genealogies, and much information contributed by other
Fentress County researchers. The information is downloadable (gedcom).
Bruce encourages corrections and additions. You may reach Bruce by email:
