DEATH... Services for J. Perry CHANEY who died Sunday night at the Baptist Hospital, Memphis were held Tuesday at Halls Funeral Home, burial in Gates Cemetery. A retired lumberman and farmer, he was employed by Mengel Box Factory for 25 yrars as a timber cruiser and estimator. He was 73, a native of Crockett County. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Julia ROOKS CHANEY; three daughters, Mrs. J. F. GRIFFIN of Forked Deer Community, Mrs. Meredith HUNT of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Mrs. H. L. WHITE of Lexington Park, Maryland.

DEATH... William Fletcher LOTT, well-known farmer of the Crockett Mills Community died Monday at his home. He moved to this county from Haywood County 58 years ago. He was 76 years old. Services were held Tuesday at Providence Baptist Church, burial in church cemetery. He leaves a son, Leslie LOTT of Dyersburg; and a brother, G. T. LOTT of Bells.

ROB MAYS... died Wednesday a. m. at a Washington, D. C. hospital following an operation. The body will be brought to Friendship for funeral at the Friendship Church of Christ with burial in Sudbury Cemetery.

BELLS ITEMS... Mr. & Mrs. E. D. STUTTS received a message Friday night telling them of the illness of his mother, who was at St. John's Hospital, Tulsa, Okla. They left immediately but his mother passed away before they reached her. They went to Seminole, Okla. for the funeral and burial Saturday.

DEATH... Services for the Rev. William Earl POWELL, former pastor of the Gibson County group of Southern Presbyterial Churches of Memphis Presbytery, were held Sunday, February 12th in the Fruitland Church, burial followed in Oakland Cemetery in Trenton. He was 64. Services were held Saturday at his church in Selma, Ala. The body and the funeral party arrived in Jackson late Saturday and came directly to Trenton. Born in Alamo, he was a son of the late Judge William and Rebecca McLEARY POWELL. He leaves his wife, the former Miss Katie HARRIS of Brazil; a son, William E. POWELL Jr., who resides with his parents; a daughter, Mrs. John HOWELL of Tallahassee, Fla.;three brothers, Ralph POWELL, Bob POWELL, and Jim POWELL, all of Fruitland, and five grandchildren.

COXVILLE... Mr. & Mrs. R. M. COOP attended the COOP-McGRUDER wedding Friday at the First Baptist Church in Memphis. She was the former Miss Ella COOP and a sister of R. M. COOP and was born and reared here.

DEATH... Services were held Feb. 20th at Humboldt at Hunt Funeral Home for Will L. ROBERTS, well-known contractor of Humboldt, who died Saturday night at Kennedy General Hospital, Memphis, burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. He was 63. Born in Crockett County, son of the late William H. ROBERTS and Mrs. Flora ROBERTS, who survives. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Adeline ROBERTS of Humboldt; a sister, Mrs. Russell E. MOONEY of Richmond, Va.; and a brother, Frank ROBERTS of Memphis.

BELLS ITEMS... Mrs. Byrd WILLIAMS, a former resident of Bells, passed away last Wednesday night and the funeral service was held at Walnut Hill Baptist Church Thursday and burial followed there.

BELLS ITEMS... Friends here were sorry to learn of the sudden passing of Mr. E. H. LEEGAN of Covington, Ky., who suffered a heart attack the first of last week. Mr. & Mrs. LEEGAN and their two children, Billy and Sara lived here a few years ago, where he was an employee at the L. & N. office.

DEATH... Services for W. A. (Tobe) McALISTER were held Thursday at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church near Friendship, burial in church cemetery. He was 80. He died at the home of his son, R. C. McALISTER of Halls; he was a retired farmer. He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Luther CAMP and Mrs. Lola ANGE of Friendship and Mrs. Austin RICHARDSON of Devine, Texas; four sons, G. A. McALISTER and R. C. McALISTER of Halls, Gus McALISTER of Covington, and Jim McALISTER of Chicago, IL; three sisters, Mrs. Jose ROBERTS, Mrs. J. M. GRAVES and Mrs. Nora WOODS, all of Nashville; three brothers, Tom GILBERT and Gettis GILBERT of Nashville and Edd GILBERT of Tigrett, Tenn.; 31 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

DEATH... The sudden passing of Virgil E. PINKSTON, 61, at his home in Memphis was a great shock to his many friends in the county. He was reared in Alamo, he was a barber. Services were held ar Ronk Funeral Home Monday, burial in Alamo Cemetery. He leaves his wife; two brothers, Harville PINKSTON of Memphis and Ernest PINKSTON of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Percy WAINRIGHT of Memphis, and Miss Lurlyne PINKSTON of Alamo.

DEATH... More information on the death of Robert MAYS; he had been employed by the government at Indian Head, Md., and would have completed 30 years of service June 1st. He was 60. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Elsie BEDWELL MAYS, daughter of S. H. BEDWELL; three sons, Stephen MAYS with the Air Corps, stationed in Biloxi, Miss., Johnie MAYS and Charlie MAYS, both of Indian Head; a daughter, Miss Nancy MAYS of Indian Head; and a brother, Jimmy MAYS of Ark.

DEATH... Mrs. Pearl HENDERSON died of a heart attack Tuesday night at Blytheville, Ark. hospital. She made her home in Bells and was visiting her son, Mayor Doyle HENDERSON of Blytheville. She was the wife of the late C. C. HENDERSON, prominent druggist of Bells. Services in First Christian Church, Bells, burial in Bellview Cemetery. She also leaves one brother, Herman CORNATZOR of Dallas, Texas; three grandsons, Charles HENDERSON of Blytheville; Ray HENDERSON and Phil HENDERSON of Bells; and one granddaughter, Jerry Gene HENDERSON of Bells.

DEATH... Mrs. Sarah AVERY PENICK of Alamo passed away on Wednesday, March 8th. Services were held in the Alamo Baptist Church on March 10th, burial in Alamo Cemetery. Mrs. PENICK, better known to her friends as "Miss Sallie" or "Mammy" was 81 years of age, having been born at Gadsden, Crockett County on December 13, 1868, the daughter of John Bimmery SMITH and Julia ROSEMOND SMITH. She was married to Troy H. AVERY in 1911. After being a widow for 21 years, she married Dr. Isaac Newton PENICK, Dean of Theology at Union University in Jackson, Tenn. She leaves three children, J. B. AVERY SR., Attorney;and Harry S. AVERY, Special Investigator of Alamo; and Mrs. Rosemond GLOSUP, teacher of Music of Houston, Texas, together with T. H. AVERY and E. T. AVERY, children of her deceased son, T. H. AVERY. She also leaves her sister, Mrs. Nannie DILLON of Memphis; and five grandchildren, Mrs. Blanche AVERY TUCKER of Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Lellie PENICK CARLTON of Orlando, Fla., Kay PENICK of Winchester, Ky., John PENICK of New York City, Warren PENICK of Atlanta, Ga., and the children of deceased step-son, J. H. AVERY of Marston, Mo. Besides the above named grandsons, she leaves 7 others, J. B. AVERY JR. of Alamo, Mrs. Sara AVERY EMISON of Alamo, Dr. James Kelley AVERY of Norfilk, Va., Harry S. AVERY, JR., Bruce AVERY and Steve AVERY of Alamo and Mrs. Betty Sue SLAUGHTER of Johnson City, Tenn., together with eight great-grandchildren.

MIDWAY... Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth TINKER, 88 years, passed away Friday, March 3rd at her home near Midway. She leaves 10 children; 36 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren. She had lived in this community for 40 years and made lots of friends. The funeral was conducted Saturday at Midway, burial in Bellview Cemetery in Bells.

DEATH... William H. HOLMES, of Bells died Wednesday of last week at Kennedy Hospital of burns he received when an oil cook stove exploded at his home early Friday morning. He was 39. He lit two burners of the stove, allowing it to heat up when it exploded spraying hot oil on him. Born and reared near Bells, he was employed at a canning factory near his home. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. J. C. HUNTER of Memphis and Miss Amy HOLMES of Bells.

DEATH... Services for James Ellis BYRD, who died at his home near Alamo on Wednesday of last week after a long illness were held at Quincy Methodist Church Saturday, burial in Quincy Cemetery. He was a blacksmith, 52 years of age. He leaves his wife; five children, James BYRD, Elgie G. BYRD, Elvie BYRD, Eugene BYRD, and Betty Ruth BYRD; his parents, Mr. & Mrs. W. T. BYRD; a brother, John BYRD; five sisters, Mrs. Lela CHESSLER, Mrs. Ollie SPEER, Mrs. Lula SPEER, Mrs. Ruby DICKSON, and Mrs. Jessie CLIMER.

Services for Edgar William JONES, Crockett County farmer, who died at his home in the Brooksdale community Wednesday morning will be held at the Cairo Church of Christ Thursday, burial will be in Cairo Cemetery. He was 51. He leaves his wife and four children, Clifford JONES of Jackson, Freed JONES of Crockett County, Mrs. Lavelle CARLSON of Selmer, and Mrs. Lavenia EMISON of Brownsville; two brothers, Clarence JONES of Cairo and Daniel JONES of Fruitvale.

Death... Kay MILLS, young daughter of Mrs. Alice CASEY MILLS passed away Thursday afternoon at her home in Bells. The funeral services were held Friday at Ronk Funeral Home, burial in Bellview Cemetery. She is survived by her mother and her sister, Mollie MILLS.

BELLS ITEMS... Mr. & Mrs. Guy MUSGRAVES were called to Memphis Saturday night by the sudden death of Guy's brother-in-law, Mr. Jesse MORRIS who was killed in an automobile accident. His funeral was held Tuesday at National Funeral Home, burial in Brownsville.

BOY DIES IN RAIN BARREL... Alton Lloyd BURNETT, 6-year-old son of Mr. & Mrs. Virgil BURNETT of near Alamo was drowned accidently at his home Sunday when he fell into a rain barrel full of water. His parents said they had taken the youngster to Sunday School and when they returned home he went out to play in the back yard. They began hunting for the child later and discovered his body in the barrel. Services were held Monday at the Church of Christ in Alamo, burial in Pond Creek Cemetery. He also leaves two sisters, Geraldine BURNETT and Peggy BURNETT; three brothers, Joe Carl BURNETT, Houston BURNETT and Raymond Lee BURNETT of near Alamo.

DEATH... Mrs. Mattie TYREE FIELDER, 90, died last Thursday at her home at Opelousas, Al. She was born and reared near Friendship, daughter of the late Dr. Franklin Decatur TYREE and Mrs. Lucy Alice JONES TYREE. After she married Dr. Will FIELDER of Friendship, they moved to Amarillo, Texas and made their home. Dr. FIELDER died after they had lived there a few years and she moved to Trenton with her two small children. She taught in Trenton and Gibson County schools until she moved to Opelousas to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. W. T. STEWART about thirty years ago and continued to teach in the La. school system until she was 75. She leaves her daughter and a son, Clarence H. FIELDER, executive in the International Shoe Co. of St. Louis; her brother, Dr. Cyrus E. TYREE of near Trenton. The remains were brought to Trenton for funeral and burial.

DEATH... Mass for Jason Frank VARNER, merchant of near Johnson Grove who died at his home Tuesday was said Wednesday at Hohnson Grove Cemetery, burial in the cemetery. He was 76. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lillie VARNER; and a brother, Ned VARNER of Bells, Tenn.

DEATH... John Truxell WERTZ died in Alamo Tuesday of a heart attack. He was 75, a veteran of the Spanish American War. (?)He was born in Pa. and had lived in Jonesboro, Ark. Services will be Friday at Ronk Funeral Home, burial in Alamo Cemetery. He leaves his wife, Mrs. J. T. WERTZ of Alamo; one son, Julian WERTZ of Pittsburg, Pa.; and one sister Mrs. Annie JOHNSTON of Barberton, Ohio.

DEATH... Ray Franklin FREEMAN, son of Mr. & Mrs. James FREEMAN died at his home Tuesday night. He was 3 years of age. Services at the Maury City Baptist Church Wednesday, burial in Old Field Cemetery. He leaves his parents; one brother, Billy Joe FREEMAN; one sister, Charlotte Dianne Freeman.
