Monuments Dedicated - By Ed Baldwin - Correspondent

Since Oct. 29, 1801, Claiborne County has been recognized as a specific geographic and political entity with Tazewell as the county seat. Now a monument stands in front of the court house to recognize those who were instrumental in officially forming the county.

On Friday, Oct. 28, the monument was dedicated. The stone and bronze marker came about as a result of efforts by the Claiborne County Government, the Claiborne County Cemeteries Association (CCCA), and the General Joseph Martin Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).

Joyce Watson, President of the CCCA, told the audience that original documents had been located that verified the information contained on the monument.

Chuck Minton read a history of the formation of the county, including brief comments about each of the first commissioners. County Mayor Joe Tyler Duncan told the audience that "everybody had a cause," including the formation of this county's government.

As the names of each of the original justices (now called commissioners) were read, current commissioners placed a flower in a wreath in front of the monument. The first justices were: Isaac Lane, Joseph Webster, Williamson Trent; James Chisum, Abel Lanham, John Wallen, Matthew Sims; John VanBebber, William Rogers, George Real, Cavender Newport; John Casey, Joseph Nations, and James Renfro.

Later the same day, CCCA and SAR representatives met at the Lanham Cemetery on Freeman Road to honor the grave of Abel Lanham. He was a volunteer in the War for American Independence in addition to being one of the original justices in the county. Chuck Minton, a direct descendent, related some of the history of Lanham.

At both events the Rutledge High School JROTC presented the colors of the United States, Tennessee, and Claiborne County. Eagle Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance.

In addition to honoring our heroic forefathers, the SAR organization sponsors Eagle Scouts and works to foster true patriotism.

More information about the General Joseph Martin Chapter is available at (423) 626-2287. The CCCA works to preserve local cemeteries and identify those interred there.
