CIVIL WAR VETERANS BURIED IN CLAIBORNE COUNTY |
I have been working on
identifying the grave sites of veterans of the Civil War in Union County
for several years now. Some of these veterans were buried in the
surrounding counties. Some were moved by TVA in the 1930's. Quite a few
that were originally buried in Claiborne County were moved to Union
County. A while back I went through Paul Johnson's book on the
cemeteries of Claiborne County and came up with the list below. This
list identifies the page and column number of the veterans grave site. I
am sure that there are many more buried in Claiborne County that had no
identification as to their military service. This is particularly true
with those that served in the Confederate army. I have identified a
number from Claiborne County that were re-buried in Union County. |

Able Lanham was a Revolutionary War Soldier. He served under Capt. Kerkendall, William Grimes, Samuel Williams and Col. John Sevier as well as Gen. Sumpter. He also was a founding father of Claiborne County during 1801. His wife, Jean Kerkendall is buried beside him. They are my great great great great grandparents. A military monument was placed at his place of rest. |
 |
James
Wyreman was a Civil War Soldier. He fought in the battle of Rogersville at Big Creek in Hawkins County. James was a Private and served in Co. E, 2nd Tenn. Inf., and was a resident of Claiborne County TN. He is buried in his family cemetery, located on the shore of Powell river on the farm of Clifford and Hazel Turner. |
 |
It is assumed this Civil War Soldiers name was John because in the past, peoples names were abbreviated on grave markers. He served in Co. E. 6th Tenn. Inf. The name of the cemetery were he is buried is called the Leatherwood Cemetery. It is located at the mouth of Leatherwood Hollow overlooking Norris Lake in Claiborne County. |
 |
William Capps could be John Capps brother. He served in the Civil War with Co. E. 6th Tenn. Inf. He is buried in the Leatherwood Cemetery, located at the mouth of Leatherwood Hollow overlooking Norris Lake in Claiborne County. |
 |
Woodford Cull was a Private during the Civil War. He served with Co. E. 5th Ky. Regt. He is buried in a cemetery located along side Hwy 58, Lee County Virginia. This Cemetery is West of the city of Jonesville. |
