Cemetery Preservation Workshop - April 7, 2017In Bardstown, Kentucky, Presented by Jason Church of the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training of the National Park Service. |
Place a board on both sides of the stone . . .The notch Jason is showing would be used if you were fitting it against the EDGE of the stone, like pulling together a stone that was split vertically. Here it is a horizontal break and the boards are placed flat against the face of the stone.
. . . Use a carpenter's clamp to clamp the boards in place, holding the pieces of the stone in place while the epoxy sets.
Since the clamps will have to be in place for several days, do not use clamps that will rust - the rust will end up staining the stone. But be sure the clamps are strong enough that they will not fail over the time necessary for the epoxy to set.
If epoxy squeezes out of the crack, use a dental tool to remove it . . .You do not want the edge of the crack to be sealed with epoxy.
Use a [mortar compound name] to fill the outer edge of the crack. This will allow water to move up the stone in a more natural way.
mixing the [mortar compound name] . . .
. . . Add water . . .
. . . Mix to proper consistency.
