Marriage Notes for THEO HOFSOMMER and RUTH HUGHES:
Theo was born and raised in Breese, Illlinois. He attended Breese public schools and graduated from Carlyle High
School in 1923. He went to the
University of Illinois, graduating in 1927, then moved to Chicago and received
his law degree at DePaul University. He
was admitted to the Chicago Bar Association in 1933 and was a practicing
attorney in Chicago the rest of his life.
He never forgot his origins in Breese, however, and subscribed to the
Breese Journal and kept in touch with the family all his life. As an attorney he prepared the estates for
many of the family members. He was
baptized with the name Theophil but always used the name Theo as an adult. Some references named him as Theodore but
this was incorrect.
Bea was raised in a large family in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1918 the family lost two daughters to the
flu epidemic, and another son died at school.
After these tragedies, the familiy moved to Oklahoma City for a year,
then settled in Des Moines, Iowa. Bea
went to St. Joseph academy in Des Moines and then to Iowa State University
where she graduated in 1928 in Home Economics.
After graduation she moved to Chicago where she worked at the Harding's
restaurant chain. She started as an
apprentice trainee, worked there 32 years, and ended up as Vice President.
Theo and Bea were members of the 4th Presbyterian Church on the near
north side of Chicago and were very
active in community affairs. Theo was a
deacon of the church for many years, and Bea was President of the Women's Board
of the Presbyterian Home in Evanston.

or perhaps one of her sisters.
It was with Hughes/Hofsommer photos.
