The family name Cosby is of Saxon origin, being derived from .the name given to the village or seat of Robert, of Cossibey, who was the progenitor of numerous lines of Cosbys in England and America. The line of descent follows:

1 Robert of Cossibey.

2 John of Cossibey.

3 Robert Cossibey, of Hermaston, Lincolnshire, England, was living in 1516. He -married Isabel, daughter and -heiress of Ralph Page, Esq., of Great Leake, Nottinghamshire, and his wife Isabel, daughter and heiress of John Blake, of Hermaston. His son and heir.

4 John Cosbie married Mabel, daughter of Argard, of Foscon, Nottinghamshire. They had two sons, namely:

1.  Richard Cosbie, of Grear Leake, whose only daughter, Bridget Cosbie, became the wife of William Towers, Gent., �of Thunnock.
