To visit Thompson Cemetery, take Hwy 82 east from Gainesville, to FM 371. Turn left (north) and continue to Walnut Bend School, where you will turn right and continue north on CR 127 to CR 106. Go east about one-quarter mile. You will see a two-well operation with two large tanks on the right and some 100 feet past this, turn right through the gate which is usually unlocked from 8 - 5. You will see a small lane that heads east (to your left) and then turns back right over a small earthen dam. The cemetery is just beyond this point and visible. The old Thompson home place once stood on the opposite side of the road. This cemetery is located south of the old Coesfield community in the northeast part of Cooke County and is maintained by the greater Thompson family. When surveyed in 1978, the cemetery was described as 'abandoned' but that is no longer the case. Fred Thompson and other family members rescued the cemetery from oblivion. The first known burial was in 1881 but it is believed that William, Jr. and Nancy Thompson are also buried there. They deeded the land in 1874 to their daughter, Nancy Margaret who was married to Stephen Elliott and the recorded deed states that "except for one acre shall be set aside as a family burying ground". Nancy was 80 and William was 79 in 1874 and they do not appear on the 1880 census.
