There are many weathered stones that can no longer be read and it was a difficult place to survey. I used the old survey done in 1980 by Patti Tucker as a guide and have added notes. Some of the unknown graves are people who were moving west, died and were buried here. If descendants know of someone buried in South Dexter, whose name does not appear on this list, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks to those who have added markers for family graves! New pictures were added May 12, 2006.
The cemetery is located on the east side of FM 678 across from the Dexter Community Church.
South Dexter Cemetery, established 1855, predates the incorporation of the town by almost 20 years and is one of Cooke County's oldest graveyards.
My thanks to a lifelong resident, Mr. Jim Bean, Jr. who shared some interesting history about Dexter and the cemetery, which has its own 'Boot Hill' on the north side. Tradition says there are four men buried there head to toe, who were shot and killed by a stranger. This once bustling place with its main street filled with farmers wagons is now a silent ghost town with a few residents. You can stand in the old graveyard and look across the road at the only reminder of old Dexter, the church still in use and standing on the corner.
"Note" During the first survey in 2003 I noticed many old stones that had been tossed across the fence in the tall weeds and brush or perhaps they were there when the cemetery was fenced
I have noticed the same in many old cemeteries...Gene K. Tarvin.

On an early DAR survey
WHITFIELD, Sophronia M. June 1828 - 1901
I have tentatively added her name to this cemetery although there is no record that she is buried here. In 1900 Cooke Census, 'Sophia M.' was living with her widowed son, Thomas C. & two granddaughters at Dexter. She died the following year and it seems most likely she would be buried beside her husband and a married daughter.
