Marriage: {629} 24 May 1931: Married at the home of Charles A. Miller, by the Reverend MB Carmen. Witnesses: Albert E. Marsh and Viola Kingdon. Permission for the bride to marry was signed by her father. (According to Mildred, they delayed marriage until Ted was able to finish paying for the schooling of Neva & her husband - beautician's & barber's school.) Ted was shoe salesman and Mildred was the secretary for the manager of Fuller Brush in Omaha, just before they married. They lived in Norfolk, NE until 1932, then moved to Omaha where Ted was salesman for Buck's Bootery. Lived in Fullerton, NE briefly - then in Columbus, NE where he managed Buck's Bootery Store (1936). This is where they rented a house next door to Fritzhof & Matilda Person. Ted Jr. used to follow Carole's Grandpa Person as he walked down the rows of his wife's garden (pipe in mouth, and hands behind his back). 1937: They headed for CA on a vacation sharing car expenses with Ellen Person, who was going out to help her sister, Alice following birth of Carole. Ted looked around & liked it - got a job at GallenKamps Shoe Store in San Bernardino, CA. They rented a house, later moved to a house on Reese St. 17 March 1941: they opened Millers Shoe Store in Barstow, CA. and started building a house on 1st St. Moved into it on Pearl Harbor Day, 1941. Ted signed up with the Red Cross. Lillian Coffland managed the shoe store, and Mildred helped out. They owned the store until 1947. Ted bought the Melrose Hotel & it was managed by his brother, Bernard Miller. His sister, Neva was also employed there. Ted started his accounting business and got a real estate license. Sold the hotel about 1949. Jan 1949, moved to Fullerton, NE to take over father's business when CA Miller died. (Ted Jr remained in Barstow, living with the Pendletons until he graduated in June.) Ted Sr secured real estate & insurance licenses for Nebr. ~1954: Sold out the NE business and returned to Calif. because of Rick's allergies. Reopened the Barstow accounting office and ran it until retired to Sun City. For several years, Ted commuted twice a week back to Barstow rather than desert his long-time clients. 1963-64: Purchased home at 26242 Ridgemoor Rd, Sun City, CA 92381. 1981: Celebrated 50th Wed. Anniv. with reception at Masonic lodge bldg in Sun City. Lois June Miller Lindholm attended, & all of Mildred's brother & sisters were there. 1985: Ted has been ill off-&-on over the last few months, but has managed to do the income tax papers of several old customers &/or their widows. One account was paid off with a pan of cinnamon rolls! He says he won't be doing them next year - but he's a soft-touch. Husband: Ted was raised by his father & step mother, Lucy Shively Miller, in Fullerton, NE. He spent about a year (1912-3) with his mother, Lillie, & her brother, Sam Evans, in Iowa following his parents separation. Following 2 years of college at the Univ. of Nebraska Lincoln, he went to work as a salesman for Buck's Bootery in Omaha in the building across the street from the one in which Mildred worked as a secretary. Later worked at store in Albion, NE and in Columbus, NE. 1937-41: He managed a Gallenkamps Shoe Store in San Bernardino, CA. 1941: he opened his own store in Barstow, CA, called Miller's Shoe Store. Later bought the Melrose Hotel, which was operated by his brother, Bernard & sister, Neva. During WWII, he was in the Red Cross overseas in Honolulu & Okinawa where he served the prisioners returning from Japan. Following his discharge he sold his shoe store & entered into the tax consultation & accounting business in Barstow. He was an active counsellor in civics, government & community projects for the Boy Scouts. 1947: he bought his first horse & named her Babe, his nick name for his sister Lois June. On Flag day in 1948, following a mistaken diagnosis of constipation & the adminstration of an enema of water & salts, Babe had a foal that he named Flagg. He sold both horses to Wilber Olson when the family moved to Nebraska in 1949, following his father's death. He bought a horse (name unknown) there & was active in the Fullerton horse club. He operated his fathers real estate & insurance business in Fullerton until 1953, when moved back to Barstow, CA & re-opened his tax consulting business. Shared a business office with Wm. Knaggs at 119 1/2 East Main St., Barstow, CA. 1963: moved to Sun City, CA but retained his business in Barstow & commuted to work for about 10 years. During that time he started tax consulting at Sun City & worked in that capacity until forced to retire in 1885 due to bad health. Often served as executor for estates. He became progressivly weaker during the next five years, and was cared for at home by his loving wife.
