George McAdams and Elizabeth Faith

     The culmination of sixty years of wedded life is today being celebrated by Mr. and Mrs. William McAdams, Sr., of 813 Washington avenue, two of the oldest local residents. Mr. and Mrs. McAdams were the recipients of a shower of post cards today; this evening, surrounded by children and relatives, they will greet their friends in their home. A great wedding cake, bearing 60 candles will be cut as the crowning feature of the day.
     The aged couple are in excellent health although Mr. McAdams is totally blind. This morning, they were as happy and excited as children and took great interest in all the hurry and bustle which was evidenced throughout the house. The husband is 86 years old and the wife 83.
     William McAdams of Somerset and Miss Margaret Porter of Green Springs, Pa., were married at the home of the bride on Valentine Day, 1856. Nine years later they removed to Braddock, when this city was a thriving hamlet of five house, all located on what is now Washington avenue. The family homestead was erected at 809 Washington avenue, soon afterward; it is still standing and is one of the oldest houses in Braddock. Mr. McAdams was a carpenter and plied his trade here for many years; he was also a contractor and at times turned his head to building. He was acquainted with all the prominent rivermen of the early days and himself was known all along the Monongahela and Ohio rivers. His stories of river life have been enjoyed by many local residents. Mr. McAdams retired 12 years ago upon the failing of his sight. He is now totally blind. He and his wife are among the charter members of the First Christian Church of Braddock.
     All of their eight children will be guests at the home tonight, with 30 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Only one grandchild will be missing: Harry Grannis of Cheyenne, Wyoming, will not be present.
     The following children will be guests: Mrs. Elizabeth Shutterly, formerly Mrs. David Grannis of Washington avenue; Mrs. William P. Fowler of Lawrenceville, Mrs. Harry Lewis of Knoxville, Miss Blanche at home, Mrs. J. M. O'Donnovan of Summitt Street, William Jr., of Corey avenue, Dorsey of Bell avenue and Mark of Washington avenue. All of the 14 great-grandchildren will attend with the following grandchildren: Mrs. Vivian Dempsey and Raymond Shutterly of Braddock; Charles Grannis of North Braddock, William Grannis of Gary, Ind., Mrs. Margaret Hahn of Homestead; William P. Fowler, Jr., of Lawrenceville; Frank Lewis of South Side, Pittsburgh, Mrs. Mary Williams, Mrs. Margaret Rorich, Miss Jessie Lewis and Miss Ruth Lewis of Knoxville; John, Charles, Margaret, Laurabelle and Lois O'Donovan of Summit street; Lois and Virginia McAdams of Corey avenue, Mark Jr., William III, Elizabeth and Mary McAdams of Washington avenue and the seven children of Dorsey McAdams.
