Curry Family History

According to houseofnames.com The Strathclyde-Briton people of ancient Scotland were the first to use the name Curry.

My research has been focused on my Great Great Grandfather John "Freeman" Curry,  proving who is parents were and documenting his known family.

There is a Joel Curry, which I believe may be John Freeman Curry’s brother listed on the 1840 Edgefield, South Carolina census with another couple living with them, which I believe to be John Freeman and Louisa. In the previous household there is a Lewis Curry, age 50/60 and wife age 50/60 which I believe to be John Freeman and Joel’s father.

On the 1850 Edgefield, SC census Freeman and Louisa have a ten year old child, so they probably married before 1840. This 1850 census list: Freeman Curry, age 33 and Louisa, age 32; six children: William H.H., age 10, Jarry H.(not sure of spelling), age 8, John P., age 6, Winney S., age 4, David, age 2, and Lewis, ten months, all children show to have been born in South Carolina.  Freeman is listed as #2148 with a Value of Real Estate of $3,000, Lewis as # 2142 with Value of Real Estate as $5,000, Joel as #2143 with Value of Real Estate as $15,000 all in Edgefield, SC. Conclusion: Freeman and Louisa possibly lived with Joel until they could get a place of their own.

On the 2nd of June 1860 Garlandville, Newton Co, Mississippi Census, FF Curry, age 43, born in SC living in the household of James Curry age 45. Census list: James Curry (HOH 45 b-SC); (must be John Freeman's brother) FF Curry (43) b-SC; Louisa Curry (41); Children: William (19); James (17); John (16); Susan (14); David Curry (12); Lewis (10); Pearce (8); Virginia (6); Charles (4); Sarah (2) all born in SC . This is probably when they migrated from South Carolina to Mississippi and then later, at least by 1870 to Texas. Joel is still listed in Edgefield, SC with a Value of Real Estate of $25,000 and a Personal Estate of $60,000. Lewis, whom I believe to be the father, is also listed again on the Edgefield SC census with a Value of Real Estate of $5,000 and a Personal Estate of $15,000.

The 1870 Smith County, Texas census list: John Curry, age 25, which would be the son, as Head of the Household, with a Real Estate value of $500 and a Personal Property Value of $170; Louisa, age 48, Pierce, age 16, Virginia, age 13, Charles , age 12, Catherine, age 10, and Lewis age 20, all children show to have been born in South Carolina.
Conclusion: I assume John Freeman Curry died after 1860 and before 1870, (Catherine was born about 1860). The family moved to Smith County, sometime before 1870.

On the June 15th, 1880 Smith County Census, Louisa Curry, age 62, is living with their son-in-law, William York and daughter, Kattie, (Catherine), age 21, and grandchildren Wm. Henry, age 2, and Hattie York, age nine months.
I also found Charles, son of John Freeman and Louisa living with probably Catherine’s in-laws, Henry and Jane York on the 1880 Smith County, Texas census.

Louis (Lewis) Curry married Mary T. Fleming January 6, 1876 in Lindale, Smith County, Texas. She is the daughter of Amos Fleming and Margaret Chambless and was born January 22, 1856 in the Red Springs Community, Lindale, Smith County, Texas. Lewis Curry, age 30 and wife Mary, age 24, are found on the 1880 Smith County, Texas census with two children Henry, age 3, and Maggie, age 1, also living with them is Lewis’ brother, Pierce Curry, age 26.

The 1900 Smith County Census list L. R. Curry, age 50, and Mary, age 55(should be 45), married 24 years, 12 children born to her and 12 living: Maggie, age 22, Earl, age 21, Charley, age19, Arahan, age 16, Fannie, age 10, Katie, age 12, Rosie, age 8, Floyd, age 6, Fred, age 2, and Baby son, age 1, also living with them was William Fleming, age 23, nephew. (Note of Interest: Lewis and Mary apparently lived very close to Robert D. and Sallie Brown, there shows to be only two households between them, one being the home of Joseph Melvin and Sarah Presciah Brown on the 1900 Smith County census. Fannie, their daughter married Ernest, son of Joseph and Presciah Brown Perryman.)

The 1910 Smith County, Texas census, list: Louis Curry, age 60, Mary, age 54, mother of 12 with 8 living. Katy died January 6, 1904, at the age of fourteen, Freeman died November 19, 1905 at the age of seven, Maggie died February 8, 1906, at the age of twenty-seven and Amy died on November 20, 1900 at the age of four (the census was taken June 19th, 1900, so I’m not sure why only eight are listed as living at that time). The children that are still at home and are on this census are: Fannie, age 21, Rosie, age 18, Floyd, age 15, Fred, age 13, and Charlie, age 2, and Maggie’s children, Homer, and Margarette, Stripling age 6 age 4. The 1920 Smith County census list: Lewis, age 71, Mary, age 64, Floyd, age 26, Fred, age 23 and grandchildren Homer Stripling, age 14, and Margarette, age 13.

L. R. Curry died February 4, 1925 at the age of 74 years. He is buried in the Sand Flat Cemetery.

If you know any more information about this Curry family, it would be greatly helpful to me and other researchers. I would certainly appreciate you contacting me.
