Handwritten note on the cover: The names were transferred to this Book from an old and imperfect Register in 1881. As the schoolmaster's handwriting was sometimes hard to decipher, and as human error may occur, please do contact us if there is any question.

Half of the first page is missing from the filmed version. It would have provided dates of entry and dates of birth for the early entries. The last entry is no. 685 Ella DUNN, entered 17 Sept 1906.

Some information on early education from "400 Years of Tremaynes at Heligan" by Ivor J. Herring.

Returns made by Rectors of St. Ewe to the Bishop of Exeter include the following:
1745: Two or three poor women keep schools.
1812: ... a Writing School supported by the Parish.
1821: Our worthy inhabitant Rev. H.H. Tremayne of Helygan pays for upwards of 70 children and there are many schools kept by individuals.

By 1876 Herring notes that the St Ewe Vestry met to nominate a School Board following a government directive as a result of Forster's 1870 Education Act. He also notes that "The Tremayne sponsored school, though now a private house, still stands in the centre of St. Ewe Churchtown opposite the cross-base, creating with the Church, the late Georgian Rectory and The Crown [Inn] the quadrilateral core of the little village."
