Sulpur Bend Cemetery--Fairland, OK

Back to Index

Located Ottawa County, OK
Near the Neosho River

Mary Standridge Jones and many of her descendents lie in Sulphur Bend Cemetery. She must have lived with a wagon's ride from here. The cemetery is from the White Cherokee allotments. Mary Standridge Jones was still alive in 1870, but Indian Territory was not a state and is not in the US census. I think she lived with Delema Jones Herod or Polly White.

Sulphur Bend Cemetery: Located in Sec. 36 Twp. 26 R23. South of Fairland. From Hwy.125, take E 220 east 3.25 miles to cemetery. Sulphur Bend Cemetery, which apparently gets its name from a nearby bend in the Neosho River, was a new cemetery created by the Grand River Dam Authority to relocate a cemetery from Sec. 32, Twp. 26 R 24. Two acres containing the old cemetery were transferred from the Cherokee Nation to the Ottawa County Commissioners by Cemetery Patent 137 dated Aug. 5, 1914. It had been leased from the allotment of Claudy W. Frazier. GRDA bought two acres for the new cemetery from Irvin And Jennie White for $200 by warranty deed dated Sept. 18, 1939. (Book 161, page 656) On March 26, 1984, the County Commission deeded the cemetery to the Sulphur Bend Cemetery Association which had been incorporated by the State of Oklahoma for perpetual care of the cemetery. (Book 431, page 276) The GRDA survey of the old cemetery lists 90 graves of which 20 were unidentified. The graves were relocated to the east side of the new cemetery. The cemetery association has placed concrete blocks in the ground to mark unidentified graves. Some graves, including those of the Wards and Amma Bowen who died in 1876, are not found on the reading of the old cemetery, and the cemetery association has no record of their original location. Taken out of the book, Cemeteries of Southern Ottawa County Oklahoma, Delaware County Cemetery readers.
