CELEBRATING 125 YEARS OF TE PUKE - 2006.

Well Lynne and I have been busy since out last newsletter/meeting.

We applied to the WBOPDC for permission to use the old Te Puke Borough Council Logo for our advertising but this was turned down by Barkes Corner. We may yet try again for this.

We have spent quite a bit of time in the Te Puke archives held at the WBOPDC office especially in the Scrapbooks which were made for the Centennial. Also a visit was made to the Rotorua Public Library to see what they held there. Various visits have been made to the Tauranga Public Library also. Photocopies have been made of relevant information. During Lynne's trawling through the Te Puke Times archives for her column, copies have been made and/or noted for future reference.

Te Puke Rotary Club were approached re being our "cheque book" as we are not a registered society. They were very pleased to help us and all monies received are payed to them and then we apply to them with receipts etc for our spending. This has been a great help and thanks is offered to the club.

We applied to the Western Bay District Council for some money towards research for the book. We were granted $1000 which enabled Lynne to go to Wellington and unearth various documents about Te Puke including the Deeds for the Sale and Purchase of the area of land known as Te Puke. Also lots of other documents relating to the Lady Jocelyn as well as flaxmilling etc.

We have just applied to the Lottery Board Heritage Commission for funding and should hear about this shortly. We were lucky enough to get letters of support from Graeme Weld (Mayor) and Lorna Treloar (Councillor) to go with this application.

We have drawn up a letter to go to the various clubs and organisations in Te Puke (around 80 of these) and applied to the Methodist Church Opportunity Shop for funding for the printing and postage of these. We were granted $100 which is just great as this as postage etc is not covered by either of the above two grants. These letters will be going out shortly.

Suggestions for 125th events that we included on the groups/organisations letter - weddings and fashions through the ages; themed sports days, - cricket, rugby, top schools; settlers picnic or luncheon; themed Christmas parade and Kiwifruit festival; re-enactment of Tauranga to Te Puke journeys; scrapbooks, photographic and family history displays; bus and walking tours of historical houses and sites; Kapa Haka, speech, short story, art and photographic competitions �

PLAQUE - nothing as yet has been done re a memorial plaque so that future generations would know that we had celebrated this in some form. This may be an idea for a club or organisation to run with.
